I had been working on this novel for many months, and as I was preparing to publish it, the horrific events of the ISIS massacre in Paris occurred. Unfortunately, those attacks fit exactly into the story line of my novel, and the event was easily incorporated; in fact, I only modified one sentence to do so. It is disturbing but all too predictable in today's world when terrorism fiction becomes fact.

Col. Thornblom's story is a fictional work that has the unfortunate potential to serve as a useful handbook for community leaders. The story line is triggered by a terrorist attack utilizing "dirty bombs" against several American and other western cities. Thornblom's trigger is credible in that the technology to build such weaponry is not beyond the reach of contemporary terrorism-sponsoring states. The dirty bombs accomplish their objectives, and technology reliant government services including communications are effectively rendered ineffective. The story focuses on a small community in Florida and takes the reader through a dramatic series of events that confront the community's leadership. A few prepared leaders rise to the challenges with a series of practical responses which result in the continued survival and effectiveness of the community. Solutions described in the book provide great instruction for community leadership while contributing to overall riveting entertainment value for the casual reader.

A Community Ranger Handbook

Doug Thornblom's Defending SeaBreezes is a novel which employs a "novel way" to educate a small community in the basics of emergency organization, how to provide fundamentals for all to follow, and how to gain cooperation from neighbors in a time of stress and shared need. Covering details such as community security, sanitation, meeting management and assuming leadership roles are just a few of the details demonstrated in a very readable style which will keep readers wanting to see what comes next. How to provide basic training in the group use of small arms is but one example of topics woven into a fast-moving plot.
Keep this short novel handy in your emergency kit!

Great read...very believable.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Doug did a great job developing the main character and telling the story from his point of view. I've read many series in this genre, but most of them follow some uber-prepper who has spent his life savings on beans and bullets. "Richard" on the other hand, simply had some supplies in the event of a natural disaster. This made sense considering where they lived, and the hurricanes to hit the Gulf Coast area over the past decade or so. The plot was believable, and unfortunately possible. It was a quick read, and difficult to put down. The only critique I have is the other characters weren't as developed as they could have been. We only learned cursory information about the other characters which left them feeling a little flat. Overall though, a fun read, thought provoking, and worth much more than the $0.99 price tag. I can't wait for Doug to put out his next title. I will definitely recommend this to everyone I know.
