Peking, 1948. In the midst of a brutal winter, the Communists tighten their stranglehold on the ancient capital, preparing to strike. Peasants starve, students riot, police crack down, and an entire city shivers on the edge of revolt.
A decade ago, Maj. Jack Burnham was an American civilian living in China when the Japanese invaded. Now, he has returned on a mission to capture a notorious war criminal before Peking falls to the Red Army. Kanamori Shoichi raped, murdered, and pillaged his way through China during World War II—he also broke Burnham’s nose. If caught, Kanamori will be brought before a tribunal and made to pay for his crimes, large and small. But finding one man in a devastated city of millions is no simple task.
Luckily, Burnham has the help of a beautiful Chinese doctor eager to help her people find justice, as well as his own expert knowledge of the language and culture. But when he finally locates Kanamori, the showdown Burnham has sought for so long will be far stranger and more dangerous than he ever imagined.

“A Chinese banquet of a book . . . of sumptuous feasts and incredible poverty, of exquisite brothels and mindless savagery . . . so rich and allusive the senses are almost overpowered.” —Los Angeles Times
“Fascinating . . . Erotic . . . Exciting.” —The Philadelphia Inquirer
“Becker is a strong writer with a special feel for the Orient at its darkest and dirtiest. . . . Vivid.” —Kirkus Reviews
Praise for Stephen Becker
“Becker changes the way you look at the world.” —Pat Conroy
“Stephen Becker said that a writer, or any artist, should want to accomplish four things with his work—educate, impress, edify, and entertain. An artist can make a living, he said, by doing any one of those four well. A good artist does at least two. A master, like Becker himself, does all four, and well.” —Joe Haldeman

The Gifted Writer
By Writetrak
Every so often you come across a really good action/adventure story that jumps out of the gate and races along to the winner's circle. Stephen Becker's THE LAST MANDARIN is one of them. Having read THE CHINESE BANDIT I thought Becker had an interesting style and knowledge of China and the foreigners who stumble upon it. THE CHINESE BANDIT too was a good book but this book, THE LAST MANDARIN, is better. It is the story of an American government agent in search of a notorious Japanese war criminal in China shortly after the end of WW II. Of course, it's more than that with a carefully crafted, stylized, at times brutal storyline that, if you want high adventure and perhaps another educated look at China, will grab and hold your interest. I usually donate books when I'm done with them. This one though is a keeper.

Good Reading
By Anna Priscilla
If you don't have any background of the history of the Japanese invasion of China or the internal conflict between the Nationalists ad the Communists, you are at a disadvantage in reading this fine work. However, the strength of the novel lies within the author's wonderful grasp of Chinese culture and thinking. It's a very poignant, humorous, philosophic display of the culture of the time. Most outstanding for me was how well the author displayed his knowledge of the language and how it eloquently and poetically shows the character of the Chinese people at that time period. I loved it.
