New novel of this lesser known Doc Savage clone
By Michael R. Brown
For those not familiar, Jim Anthony was a sort-of Doc Savage clone published by Trojan/Culture publications, a publisher of the "spicy" pulps of sort-of soft porn. Strangely enough, it was owned by the same guy who owned DC Comics. Quite honestly, as a long-time pulp fan, I only learned of Jim Anthony in recent years.

Jim Anthony was 'half-indian, half-irish, and all American'. More emotional then Doc, he was a physical and mental marvel. He had a penthouse in the "Waldorf-Anthony" hotel he owned, had a secret mansion in the Catskills called "The Tepee", another resort in an oasis in the American Southwest called "The Pueblo". He was assisted by a small group of people include Tom Gentry, pilot and right-hand man; Mephito, his shaman grandfather; his butler, and Dolores, the daughter of a US Senator and his fiance.

His stories ran about 24 stories. For the first 10 or so, he was 'super Jim Anthony', where he fought against science-ficional menaces. After that, he was sort of 'de-powered' and lost most of his aides except for Tom. He was turned into more of a hard-boiled detective. He would soon be written by the authors' of Trojan's Dan Turner, Hollywood Detective. At the begining he was written by Victor Rousseau. It's known he wrote the first 3 and prehaps the others before the others took over.

This time out, we have a single novel adventure of Jim Anthony.

The story is set before the published stories, which I don't have a problem with (but more on this below). We have Tom and his butler. His grandfather is mentioned, but does not appear (which I felt he should). But he is not involved with Dolores (tho they run into each other), he is instead involved with a report from a rival newspaper (Anthony also owns a paper).

Here he is dealing with an ancient cult and a coalition of business men. He has to deal with both. We get hints of other previous cases, which is a nice setup. Also comments are made that tie into other characters. Some may get them, some not.

Ok, but some negatives.

While I don't have a problem with this story being set before the published stories (they first appeared in 1940), I did have the problem with it being set in 1931! And hints of him in even earlier adventures into the later 20s. This is a bit much, as it adds more then 10 years of adventures to a character I don't feel would have been too old when his recorded adventures began. I could have believed things going back 5-6 years before the published stuff, but not over 10. And toward the end of the story, its dropped that Anthony was involved in WWI. I am not aware of this being stated in previous stories (tho I've only read the first three), but this would have made him in his 40s by the time of his original published stories, which seems too old. I think this is a mistake to make this claim.

There are some other problems. One was that when the reporter/girlfriend is introduced (Catherine Kilkenny), is that in the narrative, she is referred to as "Kilkenny", and then suddenly this changed to "Cat". I was actually confused and thought this was a new character and had to go back to catch that. Another was reference to 'chain of evidence' with forensic evidence. I don't think forensics was that advanced enough in the 1930s for such things. And, considering the setting at the Penthouse, was disappointed by the absence of his grandfather. If he couldn't be fitted in, atleast a hint as to the reason for his absence (staying at the Teepee for instance) would have been nice.

A further problem was the back cover blur bills this as a story of Anthony being caught between a 'war' between rival ancient cults. Not so. There is only one ancient cult in this story which Anthony is fighting, so this info is off.

Despite these issues, overall a good read. I look forward to more adventures with Jim Anthony.

DOCTOR PANIC
By Doctor Panic
Jim Anthony was a completely new character to me, and going in I had no prior knowledge of him at all. The book moves at a nice pace, and the character who is half Comanche and half Irish shows his own style. I would have like to see a little more brought out with his Indian Heritage maybe, and there were many mentions of rival cults that never really came into play. I found the book entertaining, and look forward to reading more of the character now that I have discovered him.
