Of the six novels, the second in the series, Barchester Towers, is generally the best known, while the last was Trollope's own favourite. better than most Kindle versions
    By Mark Riley
There's no sense in writing a review of Trollope's novels here: you know already if you like him. He's one of my favorites. This review concerns this Kindle version, which is much superior to most Kindle "transcriptions." There are few misprints, very few words run together, and no transposed lines (that I have found so far anyway). The software did a good job and some human must have looked at it to proofread. A good job.

    A small and perfect world
    By avidreader
I once read a critic who said that THE WARDEN is one of the most perfect books ever written, and I agree with him. The whole series is delightful, not the least because you can see Trollope develop as a novelist as his characters become more complex and fully rounded. This series lacks the decadence and political speculation of the Palliser novels and is suffused with the gentle glow of English country life through the middle third of the 19th century.

Trollope was a student of human behavior
    By Stephen Grenier
I'm currently reading the 4th book. The 3rd was not to my liking, but the first and second certainly were. Of the various 19th Century English writers, Trollope has his own distinctive style, although not too dissimilar from the Brontes, Dickens, etc.. His sentence structure usually involves multiple phrases and clauses set apart by commas. That doesn't particularly bother me, but young readers may not like it. I suppose if one likes writing from that era it will seem comfortable and not unusual.

Trollope demonstrates deep understanding of human behavior and the motivations behind it for 19th Century England. That's an important qualifier. He might be hard pressed to understand contemporary attitudes and actions. He ably writes of virtue and vice, be it open or hidden. His writing style involves judgments. You won't like his work if that bothers you. In describing one character in "Barchester Towers" he says, "His motives, like those of most men, were mixed, and though his conduct was generally very different from that which we would wish to praise, it was actuated perhaps as often as that of the majority of the world." And again, "Is it not a pity that people who are bright and clever should so often be exceedingly improper, and that those who are never improper should so often be dull and heavy?"

You also won't like him if the tenets of Christianity bother you. "The highest laws for the governance of a Christian's duty must act from within and not from without;"

Is he guilty of sentimentality and drama? Yes, but not to excess in the eyes of lovers of romantic fiction, such as mine. He often turns a good phrase, such as: "dreading that there might be some slip between the cup of her happiness and the lip of her fruition." "a woman when she storms always makes herself ugly, and usually ridiculous also." "Triumph sat throned upon her brow, and all the joys of dominion hovered about her curls." "He should have been aware that Eleanor had that within her which would surely protect her from such degradation. But he, like so many others, was deficient in confidence in woman."

Near the end of "Barchester Towers" the love between Eleanor and Mr. Arabin blooms in a sweet way, a way that is sure to please you.

Thank you, Amazon, for making this collection available at such a reasonable price.

New novel of this lesser known Doc Savage clone
    By Michael R. Brown
For those not familiar, Jim Anthony was a sort-of Doc Savage clone published by Trojan/Culture publications, a publisher of the "spicy" pulps of sort-of soft porn. Strangely enough, it was owned by the same guy who owned DC Comics. Quite honestly, as a long-time pulp fan, I only learned of Jim Anthony in recent years.

Jim Anthony was 'half-indian, half-irish, and all American'. More emotional then Doc, he was a physical and mental marvel. He had a penthouse in the "Waldorf-Anthony" hotel he owned, had a secret mansion in the Catskills called "The Tepee", another resort in an oasis in the American Southwest called "The Pueblo". He was assisted by a small group of people include Tom Gentry, pilot and right-hand man; Mephito, his shaman grandfather; his butler, and Dolores, the daughter of a US Senator and his fiance.

His stories ran about 24 stories. For the first 10 or so, he was 'super Jim Anthony', where he fought against science-ficional menaces. After that, he was sort of 'de-powered' and lost most of his aides except for Tom. He was turned into more of a hard-boiled detective. He would soon be written by the authors' of Trojan's Dan Turner, Hollywood Detective. At the begining he was written by Victor Rousseau. It's known he wrote the first 3 and prehaps the others before the others took over.

This time out, we have a single novel adventure of Jim Anthony.

The story is set before the published stories, which I don't have a problem with (but more on this below). We have Tom and his butler. His grandfather is mentioned, but does not appear (which I felt he should). But he is not involved with Dolores (tho they run into each other), he is instead involved with a report from a rival newspaper (Anthony also owns a paper).

Here he is dealing with an ancient cult and a coalition of business men. He has to deal with both. We get hints of other previous cases, which is a nice setup. Also comments are made that tie into other characters. Some may get them, some not.

    Ok, but some negatives.

While I don't have a problem with this story being set before the published stories (they first appeared in 1940), I did have the problem with it being set in 1931! And hints of him in even earlier adventures into the later 20s. This is a bit much, as it adds more then 10 years of adventures to a character I don't feel would have been too old when his recorded adventures began. I could have believed things going back 5-6 years before the published stuff, but not over 10. And toward the end of the story, its dropped that Anthony was involved in WWI. I am not aware of this being stated in previous stories (tho I've only read the first three), but this would have made him in his 40s by the time of his original published stories, which seems too old. I think this is a mistake to make this claim.

There are some other problems. One was that when the reporter/girlfriend is introduced (Catherine Kilkenny), is that in the narrative, she is referred to as "Kilkenny", and then suddenly this changed to "Cat". I was actually confused and thought this was a new character and had to go back to catch that. Another was reference to 'chain of evidence' with forensic evidence. I don't think forensics was that advanced enough in the 1930s for such things. And, considering the setting at the Penthouse, was disappointed by the absence of his grandfather. If he couldn't be fitted in, atleast a hint as to the reason for his absence (staying at the Teepee for instance) would have been nice.

A further problem was the back cover blur bills this as a story of Anthony being caught between a 'war' between rival ancient cults. Not so. There is only one ancient cult in this story which Anthony is fighting, so this info is off.

Despite these issues, overall a good read. I look forward to more adventures with Jim Anthony.

    DOCTOR PANIC
    By Doctor Panic
Jim Anthony was a completely new character to me, and going in I had no prior knowledge of him at all. The book moves at a nice pace, and the character who is half Comanche and half Irish shows his own style. I would have like to see a little more brought out with his Indian Heritage maybe, and there were many mentions of rival cults that never really came into play. I found the book entertaining, and look forward to reading more of the character now that I have discovered him.

A lot to like, but not a satisfying novel
    By Aaron C. Brown
I pretty much agree with Richard A. Lawhern, although I liked this book more than he did. There is a lot to like in this book: fun characters, interesting plot, thought-provoking conflicts, interesting technological speculation. This is a delightfully innovative science fiction thriller, far beyond the commonplace space opera or feeble-minded speculation. The author handles complex ideas gracefully, and juxtaposes them in unexpected ways. And the story itself holds interest, it's clever and well-crafted.

Another strength of the book is masterful wordplay. The author delights in mixing obscure English words with colorful words from other languages, expressive slang and made-up future words that are instantly understandable. There is similar, although somewhat less successful, mixing of foods, customs and fashions from different places and eras, with some made up ones as well.

Finally, there are some deep ideas here. They are not fleshed out or resolved, but the book will make you think about science, religion, bureaucracy, corruption, militarism, capitalism, nationalism, racism and other things in interesting ways.

But there are deep defects as well. Pacing is a major problem, the plot bogs down for long discussions, then stuff happens too fast for the reader to keep track, then there's another lull. There are three separate climaxes, one action, one character and one philosophical; they occur too early and too far apart. Instead of building to a climax and then resolving, the story lurches along unevenly and unsatisfyingly.

I think if that one problem were solved, a lot of my other criticisms would fade significantly. In a well-paced action thriller, it's easy to overlook minor inconsistencies or poor exposition. But when the author bores the reader, minor flaws get magnified.

One annoyance is the book spends a lot of time on detailed descriptions, but the language is not precise enough for the reader to understand exactly what's going on. There are a lot of spinning platforms and adaptations to variable gravity, but without a diagram or clear writing, all the technical details are just window-dressing.

That's at best. In other cases the details are just wrong. For one random example, "Within its first full second of acceleration, the cathedral had left 11073 Galapagos a hundred kilometers behind." That means the maximum acceleration must have been at least 200,000 meters per second per second, or over 20,000 g. But later we learn, "Those initial seconds of thrust had temporarily put the cathedral under 0.6 gees. Given that 29,000 people had been floating, unsecured, in the hab module at the time, it was amazing (a miracle, the Galapajin said) that only eleven had died." Of course, it's not "gees" that are going to kill all 29,000 people. They are floating, they will not be accelerated by the drive. What will happen to them is the walls of the cathedral will slam into them at high speed. They will all die, not because they are subjected to the 20,000 g of the cathedral, but because they are accelerated to the velocity of the cathedral in a very short period of time. You can write a good science fiction book without knowing any physics, but if you put in a lot of physics, it should be right.

In other cases it's not wrong as much as silly. There's a lot of talk about different kinds of spaceship propulsion, tokamak, fusion, explosive pulse, magnetic containment and new drive. But all the talk is meaningless, because the author just made up the names. Some of them suggest technologies, but the discussion in the book does not match the normal assumptions someone would make about the technologies. You can put magic drives in your book as long as you are consistent about their properties, but if you spend time debating alternative magic drives, you should explain what they are.

Characters are delightfully quirky, but with the exception of the protagonist and maybe her boss, they're all quirk and no core. That's okay for certain kinds of comic novels, but you need some predictable ordinariness from some characters to build a coherent thriller.

Overall, I think a lot of people will enjoy this book, and remember parts of it long after more conventional thrillers have faded. But those same people will be dissatisfied with its flaws. A good editor would help, or perhaps a co-author who had more respect for story-telling.

This book surprised me a lot (not an easy thing to do)
    By Iwona Merklejn
This book surprised me a lot (not an easy thing to do), and I am curious what will happen in the next part. It is a fast-paced space thriller with a lot of dark humor in it, touching on some basic existential issues in a way which doesn't offer easy answers, but makes one think twice about his/her own. Sophisticated, engaging and entertaining. The world of the novel is plausible because Savage extrapolates several contemporary trends ad absurdum, but in spite of all the black humor, it is not cynical or devoid of hope. I also love creative word usage and careful attention to detail which adds to the extremely rich tapestry of this story.

    Excellent first installment!
    By bruno
The Galapagos Incident is the first installment of an extraordinary look into our interplanetary future. I did what no-one should do: I read the second book first. While I consider the sequel a tremendous stand-alone book, I was still curious enough about the first to request The Galapagos Incident. Here are a few of my opinions:

    - The presence of small errors is more perceptible than in its sequel. I counted sixteen of them and informed the author. I doubt very much that they’ll be there much longer as a result. I don’t punish Indie-published books due to these small flaws; I‘m aware of the costs associated with copyediting and, besides, it’s the story that really matters;

    - Now the setting: awesome! This is a richly imagined solar system that links up well with my notions of what is technologically achievable in the future. The universe encompasses economy, society, religion and, most importantly to me, it brilliantly portrays the devastating social changes that technology and Man’s expansionism may have on us;

    - The story: With such a setting it becomes possible to write many stories, and the one chosen is an action-packed introduction to a unique group of characters. I know many of them from the sequel; it was a lot of fun to get to know Elfrida Goto at an earlier phase. I never detail plots, but I can say it didn’t fall into any patterns of predictability (an excellent point in the book’s favor);

    - Dialogue and narrative style were enormously satisfying. There was a natural humor in both these arenas, allowing me to engage emotionally with the characters. This turns an otherwise good read into a great one and is the sign of a talented author.

I love fun reads. I score reviews much the same way as amazon recommends it, and since my sense of humor enjoys a good workout I guess it was inevitable that I’d give it five stars. If you’re anything like me you’ll enjoy it too.

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book for a fair and honest review.

    A rollicking ride!
    By Fredster
This is the second of, let's hope, a series of humorous books about the adventures of a young British diplomat, Robert Milligan, in 1860s Japan. The first book had our reluctant young hero battling samurai (as well as devious Frenchmen) involved in a rebellion against the Shogunate; this one has him by the side of the most powerful man in Japan as the Shogunate begins to enter its deaththroes. As he stumbles, often drunkenly, from one mishap to the next, the loveable Milly somehow manages to survive encounters with everyone from paid assassins and murderous bands of samurai to irate noblewomen who don't appreciate their windows being used as urinals. It's a fun and rollicking ride throughout, peppered with jaunty dialogue and excellent jokes. And by the end of it, you've somehow absorbed a whole lot of Japanese history you should have learned about years ago. Looking forward to the next episode!

I was a big fan of the first book, and was so glad to see a second. Hoping for a third!

Love the historical and cultural details, and how the author weaves Milligan's adventurous tale with so much humor. I have to say the cover art is what first caught my eye. I sure hope this series gets the recognition it deserves.

More fun from the world of the Shogun and the hapless diplomat Milligan. Collier's adventures are fast-paced and a lot of fun to read, as well as filling you in on historical aspects. An easy read and a lot of fun.

  • Winesburg, Ohio (full title: Winesburg, Ohio: A Group of Tales of Ohio Small-Town Life) is a 1919 short story cycle by the American author Sherwood Anderson. The work is structured around the life of protagonist George Willard, from the time he was a child to his growing independence and ultimate abandonment of Winesburg as a young man. It is set in the fictional town of Winesburg, Ohio (not to be confused with the actual Winesburg), which is based loosely on the author's childhood memories of Clyde, Ohio. Mostly written from late 1915 to early 1916, with a few stories completed closer to publication, they were "...conceived as complementary parts of a whole, centered in the background of a single community." The book consists of twenty-two stories, with the first story, "The Book of the Grotesque", serving as an introduction. Each of the stories shares a specific character's past and present struggle to overcome the loneliness and isolation that seems to permeate the town. Stylistically, because of its emphasis on the psychological insights of characters over plot, and plain-spoken prose, Winesburg, Ohio is known as one of the earliest works of Modernist literature.

Unhappy people trapped in sad webs of their own making
    By Linda Linguvic
Sherwood Anderson published this collection of short stories in 1919 all set in fictional town of Winesburg, Ohio. Even though it's written in the third person, it's told through the narrative voice of George Willard, the town reporter, who shows up in most of the stories, sometimes taking an active role and at other times just telling a story.
It is obvious that the writer loves these people, and is frustrated at the isolation and unhappiness of their lives, even though he makes it clear that they hold within themselves everything needed to make them happy. The character in the first story is a dying old writer who is attempting to write about all the people he has known as a "book of grotesques". What follows is the collection of stories, which each character fulfilling that expectation.
There are the young lovers who don't quite connect; there is a old man so obsessed with religious fervor that he attempts to sacrifice his grandson; there is a married man who regrets it all and tries to warn a younger man of future unhappiness; there's a doctor and a sick woman who try to connect. The book is full of people who toil all their lives and never achieve happiness. As I made my way through the book I kept hoping that even one of the characters would rise above the morass. It didn't happen.
The writer has a wonderful sense of place and the town of Winesburg in the early part of the 20th Century is very real. These people were not poor or disadvantaged in the usual sense of the word; they didn't suffer fire, floods or famine. Instead, they trapped themselves in their own psychological webs that made it impossible for them to lead anything but sad unfulfilled lives. This is a fine book and stands alone as a clear voice of its time.

    A daughter's gift...
    By John P. Jones III
... Isn't one of the ultimate benchmarks of successful parenting when your child selects a book from her bookshelf, and says: "Here Dad, you may enjoy this"? Of course I had to overcome that instinctive shudder when I recognized the not very "zippy" title as belong to one of those "school assignment" books I had so successfully dodged. Yet considering it is far past the time to reconsider that initial aversion, and that the only teacher I have to please is myself; and then there is the matter of the pedigree of the recommender... so why not?

I did not get past the introduction before I uncovered a recommendation that reinforced the others. Sherwood Anderson was a mentor to both Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner, no small matter in itself. The not very fictional town of Winesburg, Ohio is based on the very real town of Clyde, Ohio, wherever that is. It proves to be located not that far off the shores of Lake Erie, between Cleveland and Toledo. Clyde still has only around 6,000 people, and their website promotes the virtues of small town living. But where is their most famous writer? You have to "drill down" two levels in their website, to find a brief, two sentence mention of the writer who literally "put them on the map." They'd rather talk about their Civil War General, James McPherson, or the Whirlpool plant. So, perhaps the ultimate endorsement: he had told too much about them, a realistic assessment of the town that jars with the "pro-business" image the website promotes, and thus numerous folks today are still not fond of him.

The book itself is composed of 24 short stories; many of them could be "stand alone" in their excellence. In some cases the character appears only in that story, such as The Reverend Curtis Hartman in "The Strength of God," or Enoch Robinson in "Loneliness." There are other characters, such as Helen White, and George Willard, who is a reporter for the local newspaper at 18, and is a thinly disguised Sherwood Anderson, who appear in multiple stories. Anderson's introductory story, entitled "The Book of the Grotesques" about a writer who: "All of the men and women the writer had ever known had become grotesques," which may be a bit harsh, but clearly this book is peopled with life's outliers, and many "lives of quiet desperation." Issues that haunt the papers today were covered by Anderson then, such as the male teacher who may have placed his hands on the boys once too often, and was run out of town, and the female teacher who had "a thing" for a lad 12 years her junior. There is also the voyeuristic preacher, and the farmer who is an instrument of "God's will." All not your normal Chamber of Commerce fare.

Anderson's prose is lean; his characters are drawn tightly and swiftly, and he seems to have a knack for the specific detail that says so much more about the person. There is also much normalcy in the book; much concerns the longing of the human heart, the figurative and literal groping with the opposite sex that is part of the coming of age process, and beyond. As in real life, the relationships can become complex and ambivalent, and Anderson even speculates on the nature of the solace his fictional mother may have been obtaining from the local doctor. Some reviewers were concerned that everything didn't tie together in the end - but I figure that is the essence of real life. In the conclusion, George Willard, just like the real life Sherwood Anderson, boards the train, and leaves town, seeking his place in the wider world. The irony is that the material for his finest writing was obtained during his first 18 years, in Clyde.

Much belated apologies, certainly for myself, as well as those 1-star reviewers, to the English teachers who tried in their Sisyphean task. Mea culpa. And thanks to my daughter for this solid 5-star read.

    Surprisingly Modern
    By SeaShell
I'm ashamed to say that I avoided this book for decades - decades! - based soley on a cover. My mother had the book on her bookshelves, an older edition with a painting of a turn of the century couple courting on the front. It looked vaguely impressionist, and left me to conclude that the stories inside would probably be a bunch of sentimentalist claptrap. How wrong I was!

The book inside is more akin to a Hopper painting than a Degas. Anderson manages an amazing level of character development within the short stories. The stories themselves work independently, but also work together to tell the story of an American Midwestern town. And the feeling one is left with is that everything you have read is essentially and authentically American.

To comment on the Kindle version specifically, it seems well formatted to this reader. I've noticed a typo here and there, but nothing glaring, and nothing that distracts from the experience of reading the book.
