  • The House of the Seven Gables is a Gothic novel written beginning in mid-1850 by American author Nathaniel Hawthorne and published in April 1851 by Ticknor and Fields of Boston. The novel follows a New England family and their ancestral home. In the book, Hawthorne explores themes of guilt, retribution, and atonement and colors the tale with suggestions of the supernatural and witchcraft. The setting for the book was inspired by a gabled house in Salem belonging to Hawthorne's cousin Susanna Ingersoll and by ancestors of Hawthorne who had played a part in the Salem Witch Trials of 1692. The book was well received upon publication and later had a strong influence on the work of H. P. Lovecraft. The House of the Seven Gables has been adapted several times to film and television.

Grade 9 Up. Hawthorne's tale about the brooding hold of the past over the present is a complex one, twisting and turning its way back through many generations of a venerable New England family, one of whose members was accused of witchcraft in 17th century Salem. More than 200 years later, we meet the family in its decaying, gabled mansion, still haunted by the presence of dead ancestors: Hepzibah, an elderly gentlewoman fallen on had times; her ineffectual brother, Clifford; and young Phoebe, a country maiden who cheerfully takes it upon herself to care for her two doddering relations. There's also Holgrave, a free-spirited daguerreotypist, who makes a surprising transformation into conventional respectability at the story's end. These people seem to be symbols for Hawthorne's theme more than full-bodied characters in their own right. As such, it can only be difficult for today's young adults to identify with them, especially since they are so caught up in a past that is all but unknown to present day sensibilities. Talented Joan Allen, twice nominated for Academy Awards, reads the tale in a clear, luminous voice. Because she has chosen not to do voices, however, it is sometimes difficult to tell which character is speaking. Still, she is more than equal to the task of handling Hawthorne's stately prose in a presentation that will be a good curriculum support for students of Hawthorne or those seeking special insight into this work of fiction.?Carol Katz, Harrison Library, NY

"A large and generous production, pervaded with that vague hum, that indefinable echo, of the whole multitudinous life of man, which is the real sign of a great work of fiction." --Henry James

    A Beautiful Work of Art
    By Elizabeth Hendry
It's very obvious from reading all of these reader reviews that The House of the Seven Gables is not for everyone. But, I urge you to determine if it is for you. If it is, you certainly don't want to miss it. This novel was not written with today's readers in mind. You cannot call it quick-paced, by any stretch of the imagination. The novel is however, a wonderful work of art. Every sentence, every word is carefully crafted, carefully chosen. This novel is meant to be read slowly, to be savored. The novel tells a fairly simple story--the story of the house, and its perhaps doomed family of inhabitants. Many years after a curse by a supposed warlock--there are only 4 members of the doomed family surviving. Is the house haunted? Maybe. Hawthorne is so clever--every time he tells us about a supposed ghost or haunting, he gives us a more "reasonable" explanation. Were they ghosts swirling around the house one evening, or was it just the wind. Is the family doomed? Maybe, but then there is young Pheobe who seems anything but. The House of Seven Gables is far superior to any contemporary gothic you can read. It is novel writing at its best. The characters have depth, the story is engaging, and even, at times, funny. But, you have to be ready for a novel written well over a hundred years ago. If you are, you are in for a treat.

Hawthorne's Supernatural Thriller, 19th Century Style
    By Jeffrey Leach
Nathaniel Hawthorne is probably one of the most despised figures in the American literary canon, at least in the minds of the millions of school children forced to read "The Scarlet Letter." I will go so far as to admit I never finished that novel. I took one look through the book and laughed at the ridiculous idea of reading such a convoluted looking story. That was at age seventeen. Now, many years later I am able to go back and actually read some of these daunting novels. What is surprising is that they are not daunting at all, just written in an ornate style from a different age. The plots often deal with the same issues and concerns modern people fret about. For those uninterested in relationships and human dramas, there are also great old stories with supernatural elements, which is where this book comes in. This edition of the book includes an introduction by Mary Oliver and several commentaries on the work by Edwin Percy Whipple, Henry T. Tuckerman, F.O. Matthiessen, and Herman Melville. The Melville commentary is actually a letter the author of "Moby Dick" sent to Hawthorne where he concludes with a demand that Hawthorne "walk down one of these mornings and see me." Pretty neat.
In "The House of the Seven Gables," the author tells his reader the story is a romance. What he means by this terminology is not a cheap paperback that involves swooning hearts with Fabio on the cover, but "a legend prolonging itself, from an epoch now gray in the distance, down into our own broad daylight." Hawthorne's specific goal is to show that the bad behavior of one generation devolves on future descendents. He accomplishes this by examining the Pyncheon family, a clan founded on America's shores by the stern Puritan Colonel Pyncheon, who used his considerable influence to inveigle prime real estate from one Matthew Maule in the 17th century. Pyncheon carried out this task by using the Salem witchcraft scare to secure Maule's execution. In his last moments, Maule laid a curse on the good Colonel and all of his descendents, telling him that God would give them blood to drink as a punishment for this evil injustice. Shortly after the Colonel builds his house with seven gables on Maule's property, he dies in a way that makes Maule's curse seem to be a reality. Rather than trace this terrible evil down through the ages in minute detail, Hawthorne only touches on a few important points before beginning his story in the middle of the 19th century.
The Pyncheon family is slowly moldering into extinction when Hawthorne introduces us to poor old Hepzibah Pyncheon. She lives alone in the ancient estate, reduced to near starvation because her brother Clifford is in prison and Jaffrey Pyncheon, a rich judge who lives in his own manor in the country, refuses to offer her assistance. The only way to survive for Hepzibah is to open a penny store in an old part of the decaying house. Just when things reach a nadir, another Pyncheon turns up to save the day. This is Phoebe, a vivacious young lady who lives in the country. This fetching lass is a blessing for Hepzibah; she runs the penny store, helps to lift the gloomy atmosphere in the house, and when Clifford returns from his long imprisonment, Phoebe entertains the doddering man with her multitude of charms. She even strikes up an acquaintance with Holgrave, a young boarder in the house. Things start to look up when yet another tragedy strikes the Pyncheon family, leading to the momentary evacuation of the ancestral estate by Hepzibah and Clifford before Hawthorne settles all accounts in an ending that is both quick and highly implausible.
The reputation this book has with many people is not good. They disparage the lengthy digressions, the massive amount of time Hawthorne takes to explore Hepzibah's dilemma over opening the penny store, the sentences that go on and on without seeming to make any point whatsoever, and the organization of the book as a whole. There is some foundation in these charges. The chapters describing the penny store do seem interminable, especially when viewed in the context of the story as a whole. As for the descriptions of Hepzibah's scowling countenance and Clifford's puny mental state, we get the idea well before Hawthorne quits harping on them. Yes, there are flaws in "The House of the Seven Gables."
However, I personally enjoyed the deeply rich 19th century prose. Hawthorne's command of the English language is impressive and, at times, as precise as a cruise missile. One need only read the chapter about Judge Jaffrey Pyncheon's unfortunate incident in the house to grasp the beauty of this author's style. As for the digressions, if people have a problem with chapters such as "Alice Pyncheon" and the introductory material setting down the history of the doomed family, it is really their loss. It is when Hawthorne writes about supernatural elements that he really managed to grab me. If this counts as a lengthy digression from the story, I will take more, please!
If I had to assign a Hawthorne novel to a group of slack jawed high school students, I would give them this one in place of "The Scarlet Letter." At least with "The House of the Seven Gables," someone might enjoy the eerie curse that united the Maules with the Pyncheons for two centuries. A letter sewn on clothing cannot stack up against ghosts, a disembodied hand, and mysterious deaths. The kids will still grumble, but not as much when they realize there are less "thees" and "thous" tossed around in this novel.

In response to the negative reviews...
    By John Salerno
I must say that the negative reviews that I have read about Nathaniel Hawthorne's The House of the Seven Gables are sorely off the mark. The prevalent sentiments are that the plot is dull (or almost absent), the characters are flat, and the description is overwrought. But you who say this are simply missing the point, as well as taking Hawthorne's work out of context. You have to understand that this novel was written during a very transitional period in literature. Writers had shifted from the Enlightenment to Romanticism (the period in which Hawthorne writes), and as Hawthorne writes his novels, another movement is being made to Realism. Realism is what we are used to in modern fiction. It contains real characters and real events. But Hawthorne had not yet fully employed these new ideas, and he still hung on to the Romantic sentiments. Therefore, he was much more interested in ideas rather than character development (a modern technique). Hawthorne chooses to convey ideas, emotions, morals, etc. rather than fully developed the characters like they would be in a novel today.
As for no plot, you have to keep in mind that Hawthorne still looks to the old tradition (not to mention his guilt of his heritage), so he uses his writing as a way to teach moral lessons, not necessarily to describe a highly detailed story and plot.
Finally, I can't deny that there is plenty of narrative description, but most of it serves a great purpose, and for the parts that you think do not belong, just read and enjoy them for their poetic beauty and technical merit.
Hawthorne is a fantastic writer, but to acknowledge this, the reader must not take his work out of its context.

The Green Odyssey: With linked Table of Contents, by Philip José Farmer

'The Green Odyssey' is an uproarious, hell-bent adventure story, combining fantasy, imagination and science, with a liberal dash of humor. It is in the best tradition of adventure science fiction, a swashbuckling tale of a resourceful spaceman who is, however, uneasily aware that he may have been miscast. Fortunately, he has the assistance of a large, gorgeous, energetic and adoring female who is supremely confident of his ability to handle all comers. With her help, that is. Alan Green was not exactly a hero. In fact he liked peace just as well as the next man. Not that he was really afraid of that crazy, hot-blooded hound-dog Alzo, or even of the hound's gorgeous owner, the Duchess Zuni-who was also hot-blooded (to say nothing of the Duke). After all, these things were understood on this backward, violent planet, and a man could manage, provided he was alert twenty-four hours a day.

    An old fashioned swashbuckling adventure
    By Kurt Granzow
This book is just plain fun. There are no deep issues here, other than the love story, just an adventure that sweeps you along for 150 pages. The main character is stranded on a foreign planet with no technology and when a space ship arrives he sees his ticket back to civilization. The story that follows is filled with ships that "sail" on grass instead of water, cannibals, pirates, moving islands, and, of course, a love interest. Put simply, the book is just a lot of fun.
Unfortunately, the book is out-of-print. But if you're willing to find an old copy somewhere, it's worth the hunt.

    A fun sci-fi quest!
    By R. Dunn
Alan Green was stranded on a barbaric, alien planet for two years. After his space vessel malfunctioned he was forced to seek refuge among the natives. He has survived as a slave, had a child, and even wed. But of course he wishes to return home.

Word of spacemen and a ship in a far off land reaches his village. The spacemen are scheduled to be executed and along with it, Green's hopes of getting off the planet will die with them.He realizes his chances to return home lie in liberating these men and escaping on their ship. But first, he must escape from his owners and face leaving his wife and children behind.

He must find passage across a completely flat plain with grass as high as your knees. The plain is as vast as an ocean. The people on this planet traverse the expanse in wheeled ships that have sails like a boat and function in a similar manner.

The plains are filled with animals, barbarians, and floating "islands". The dangers have been fueled by years of superstition and many prove to be quite true.

This was a really good sci fi story. Farmer has a wild imagination and he creates worlds that are dangerous, exotic, and believable. Highly recommended.

For Farmer Fans, A Look At His Beginnings
    By Chris Ward
This was Farmer's first novel. It disappeared for many years, and broke his heart when he was ripped off by his fly-by-night publisher and the manuscript was stolen. It's nice to see it back in print (and it's also available in its entirety on the web)-- it's not his best, but still very entertaining as a rollicking adventure with some fun ideas along the way. Farmer fans will want to read it to see where he began, and new readers will enjoy its simple virtues.

  • Personal Recollections of Joan of Arc, by the Sieur Louis de Conte is an 1896 novel by Mark Twain that recounts the life of Joan of Arc. It is Twain's last completed novel, published when he was 61 years old.The novel is presented as a translation (by "Jean Francois Alden") of memoirs by Louis de Conte, a fictionalized version of Joan of Arc's page, Louis de Contes. The novel is divided into 3 sections according to Joan of Arc's development: a youth in Domrémy, a commander of the army of Charles VII of France, and a defendant at trial in Rouen.Originally, the novel was published as a serialization in Harper's Magazine beginning in April 1895. Twain, aware of his reputation as a comic, asked that each installment appear anonymously so that readers will treat the piece seriously. Regardless, his authorship soon became known, and the book edition published by Harper and Brothers in May 1896 credited Mark Twain.

    From the Back Cover
Twin's serious, impassioned, meticulously researched story about a compelling heroine, the Maid of Orleans. This is Twain's celebration of the ideal woman: gentle, selfless, and pure, but also brave, courageous, and eloquent.

    About the Author
Mark Twain, born Samuel Langhorne Clemens, was an American humorist and writer, who is best known for his enduring novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, which has been called the Great American Novel. Raised in Hannibal, Missouri, Twain held a variety of jobs including typesetter, riverboat pilot, and miner before achieving nationwide attention for his work as a journalist with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County. He earned critical and popular praise for his wit and enjoyed a successful career as a public speaker in addition to his writing. Twain s works were remarkable for his ability to capture colloquial speech, although his adherence to the vernacular of the time has resulted in the suppression of his works by schools in modern times. Twain s birth in 1835 coincided with a visit by Halley s Comet, and Twain predicted, accurately, that he would go out with it as well, dying the day following the comet s return in 1910.

I read Twain's Joan of Arc simply because it was included in a collection with 2 of my perennial favorites: The Prince and the Pauper, and A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. I loved Joan of Arc also. But it is a very different cup of tea.
Nowhere else does Mark Twain rein in his irreverent spirit as in this work! He allows his sense of humor to emerge only in the stories of Joan's peripheral friends and fellow villagers (the Paladin, most notably, and even the narrator in the story of the love poem.) The sense of the author's genuine respect and admiration for his amazing heroine permeates the book.
The story of Joan of Arc, always a moving tale, takes on greater weight when a man like Mark Twain - a worldly, cultured, highly intelligent, and totally irreverent man - not only gives 12 years of grueling research to it, but then produces a book that is so unequivocally respectful and devoted.
Such a picture he draws! THIS is a character to excite anyone's admiration, and to inspire us all to give our best selves. And throughout the tale, while one recognizes that it is indeed a "story", it rings convincingly true. No matter what construction a religious or non-religious reader may put on the happenings of Joan of Arc's story, it is still a story of an enduringly noble character and amazing intellect. A woman who stood - and still stands - above the remainder of her species.
This is an inspiring and uplifting piece of work.

    A Real Gem
    By A Customer
My twelve year old daughter and I read this book aloud as a supplement to our studies of the Middle Ages. Before we began I thought the 452 pages would be a bit daunting but by the time we finished we wished the book was longer. This was an incredible story told by a wonderful storyteller. The characters became more than just names in a history book. We now have an in-depth understanding of the time period, the politics, and the corruption of the Church. This book by Mark Twain, which took him two years to write and involved twelve years of research, is written in the voice of Joan's page and secretary, the Sieur Louis de Conte. De Conte knew Joan as a child and was the one person who was with her through everything up until the fatal end. The book is divided into three sections. The first section details Joan's life as a village peasant when her Voices came to her directing her to take up her mission to rid France of the English, and crown Charles VII the king. In the second section, Joan's military campaign is described and explored. Militarily speaking, it was a triumph. After all, she was the only person in all of history to hold the supreme command of a nation's armies at the age of seventeen. And she was a girl for goodnes sake! It was unheard of at the time and would still be remarkable today. The third section deals with Joan's trial for witchcraft where her strength of character is especially evident. To the end, she claimed her Voices came from God not from Satan as charged. She was unwavering on this point up until she was burned at the stake. Her trial was a sham designed to further the interests of the infamous French bishop, Pierre Cauchon of Beauvais. She died a martyr's death while her beloved France and her King looked on doing nothing to save her. This book was particularly impacting for my daughter as it dealt with a young girl who was remarkable for her character, her religious devotion and her strength. It was a special experience to share it together as a read aloud and I would recommend it highly to anyone looking to further their understanding of a remarkable young girl who changed the course of history.

A great book about an extraordinary person
    By Robert W Hazlett
A master storyteller tells the tale of one of the most remarkable persons in known history. How a young, illiterate farm girl became commander-in-chief of France's armed forces at the age of 17; leading her army, which had become accustomed to defeat, to victory after victory, putting a reluctant king on his thrown and in the process, for a brief time, becoming the living embodiment of France to its people.
It is a story of Joan's courage, intelligence and most of all her unswerving faith in her destiny and in her God, and how in the last year of her brief life she stood totally alone against her persecutors, whose sole objective was to have her die by fire.
Twain's admiration for her shines through every page, and the more I learn about Joan of Arc, the more I share his admiration.
This is a great book, and a must read for anyone interested in Joan of Arc.

  • The Age of Reason; Being an Investigation of True and Fabulous Theology is an influential work written by English and American political activist Thomas Paine. It follows in the tradition of eighteenth-century British deism, and challenges institutionalized religion and the legitimacy of the Bible (the central Christian text). Originally distributed as unbound pamphlets, it was published in three parts in 1794, 1795, and 1807. It was a best-seller in the United States, where it caused a short-lived deistic revival. British audiences, however, fearing increased political radicalism as a result of the French Revolution, received it with more hostility. The Age of Reason presents common deistic arguments; for example, it highlights what Paine saw as corruption of the Christian Church and criticizes its efforts to acquire political power. Paine advocates reason in the place of revelation, leading him to reject miracles and to view the Bible as "an ordinary piece of literature rather than as a divinely inspired text". It promotes natural religion and argues for the existence of a creator-God. Most of Paine's arguments had long been available to the educated elite, but by presenting them in an engaging and irreverent style, he made deism appealing and accessible to a mass audience. The book was also inexpensive, putting it within the reach of a large number of buyers. Fearing the spread of what they viewed as potentially revolutionary ideas, the British government prosecuted printers and book-sellers who tried to publish and distribute it. Nevertheless, Paine's work inspired and guided many free thinkers.

    From the Author
THOMAS PAINE (1737-1809) was an Anglo-American political theorist and writer born in Norfolk, England. In 1774, Paine emigrated to America, bearing letters of introduction from Benjamin Franklin. Soon thereafter, he became involved in the clashes between England and the American colonies and published the enormously successful pamphlet Common Sense in 1776, which was widely distributed and contributed to the patriot cause throughout the American Revolution.

    About the Author

English-born Thomas Paine left behind hearth and home for adventures on the high seas at nineteen. Upon returning to shore, he became a tax officer, and it was this job that inspired him to write The Case of the Officers of Excise in 1772. Paine then immigrated to Philadelphia, and in 1776 he published Common Sense, a defense of American independence from England. After returning to Europe, Paine wrote his famous Rights of Man as a response to criticism of the French Revolution. He was subsequently labeled as an outlaw, leading him to flee to France where he joined the National Convention. However, in 1793 Paine was imprisoned, and during this time he wrote the first part of The Age of Reason, an anti-church text which would go on to be his most famous work. After his release, Paine returned to America where he passed away in 1809.

A defense of deism and a polemic against theism
    By D. Cloyce Smith
Thomas Paine, like others among our nation's founders (Ethan Allen, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Joel Barlow), considered himself a deist, a term that encompasses a wide range of beliefs but is principally based on "religious rationalism": that, initially created by a benevolent God, the universe operates on rational rather than supernatural principles. Paine (and Allen), however, departed from the cautiously nuanced approach to religious issues adopted by his peers and vociferously rejected Judeo-Christian tenets and scriptures. In "The Age of Reason," Paine outlines his objections to theism and his belief in deism, and he dissects the inconsistencies in both the Old and New Testaments.
Paine published the book in two parts: the first he hurriedly finished in January 1794 when he realized he would be arrested during the French Revolution (passages were in fact written from the Luxembourg Palace in Paris, where he was imprisoned). The second part was written the following year, and he responds to the critics of the first part with a no-holds-barred attack on the veracity of the Bible.
Paine presents his basic belief that "it is only in the creation that all our ideas and conceptions of a word of God can unite," and later in the book he says that "the creation is the bible of the deist." To Paine, the Bible is the word of man, not the Word of God, and he confronts many of the literalist beliefs proffered by the clergy and worshippers in his day. Many of his arguments, once shocking and blasphemous, are now taken for granted. For instance, he analyzes internal evidence in the books allegedly written by Moses, Joshua, and Samuel to show that it's impossible for Moses, Joshua, and Samuel to have written them--a view that most Christians and nearly all biblical scholars acknowledge today. In other ways, he is way ahead of his time, pondering the minuteness of our world in the immensity of the universe, speculating that other planets around other stars may well hold other intelligent species, and mocking the resulting conclusion that "the Son of God . . . would have nothing else to do than to travel from world to world, in an endless succession of death."
Paine believes that God made a complex multi-world universe (rather than a single world) so that it would serve as a textbook for humankind: "As therefore the Creator made nothing in vain, so also must it be believed that he organized the structure of the universe in the most advantageous manner for the benefit of man." It is through this "revelation" of nature that believers can know God: "The principles of science lead to this knowledge; for the creator of man is the creator of science, and it is through that medium that man can see God, as it were, face to face."
Even if one disagrees with Paine (and many obviously do),"The Age of Reason" is an essential book both historically and philosophically. It should be read whether you hope to provide support for your own beliefs or to discover what non-Christians thought two centuries ago. It's inevitable that every reader will approach this book with an agenda, but even Christians should wrestle with Paine's arguments--since many of them are still heard today.

Age of Reason is still sparking debate
    By Sara
It is evident to me that the staying power of Paine's Age of Reason is strong-- I need only look through the mixed opinions here at Amazon to see how dramatically it impacts those who read it. For me, it was a great wake-up call. I read Age of Reason at the beginning of this year and didn't know much about what to expect. From the first few pages I knew that I had found a book that reflects how I feel about religion. Paine offers a sensible alternative to atheism and the vast supply of revealed religions that abound in the world. To be logical, Paine points out, you need not give up a belief in a Higher Power. But you also don't have to sell your soul to charlatans and holy books written hundreds of years ago by men, not gods.
The first half of Age of Reason outlines Paine's own beliefs as well as those he rejects. He gives reasons for every point he agrees or disagrees with and it is clear to the reader how Paine feels. Paine wants to spell out what his thoughts are so that he won't be misjudged by his peers. (Jefferson went through a similar ordeal-- because of his connections with France, he was labeled "a French infidel and atheist" neither of which was a true statement. See _The Religious Life of Thomas Jefferson_ for more info.)
In the second half, Paine sets out to show the Biblical discrepancies to those who wanted to prove his ideas false by using the Bible as their "evidence". In a relatively small number of pages, Paine debunks and demystifies (in my opinion) a fair amount of 'Christian' theology and scripture. If one man can do it so well in only a few pages, what does that say for revealed religion? That question is for each of us to answer individually and Age of Reason is required reading for anyone who is serious in doing just that.

The Most Remarkable Book Ever Written
    By Bradley P. Rich
If the title above seems like hyperbole, I am prepared to defend it: Thomas Paine was one of the most important figures of the American revolution, his pamphlet "Common Sense" did more to bring the colonies to revolt than any other document. After the revolution he went to France believing the French revolution to be the next step in the development of the freedom of mankind. While there he was condemned to death by Robespierre and detained pending execution. Believing that his death was imminent, Paine wrote Part One of Age of Reason, which is a compelling critique of the Bible and the faults of Christianity. His analysis is thorough, detailed and compelling, which is particularly impressive since he did it entirely without access to a Bible! This topic will offend many (which explains Paine's current demise from the pantheon of revolutionary heroes) but it should be read both for its analysis of the Bible and for appreciation of one of America's founding fathers.

  • Emily Elizabeth Dickinson (December 10, 1830 – May 15, 1886) was an American poet. Dickinson was born in Amherst, Massachusetts. Although part of a prominent family with strong ties to its community, Dickinson lived much of her life highly introverted. After studying at the Amherst Academy for seven years in her youth, she briefly attended the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary before returning to her family's house in Amherst. Considered an eccentric by locals, she developed a noted penchant for white clothing and became known for her reluctance to greet guests or, later in life, to even leave her bedroom. Dickinson never married, and most friendships between her and others depended entirely upon correspondence.

    For All Poetry Fans.
    By Sci Fi Fan
This is volume one of the Poems of Emily Dickinson, in a Kindle format. Yes, this is in the public domain (read:free). This is an amazingly good transition - there are no typos and\or misplaced symbols. As far as I can tell, this single volume contains all of Ms. Dickinson's poetry that I was aware of, prior to buying. There was some stuff I'd never heard of before too so, this is a really nice little collection. I'm not sure how much more anyone would need. One poem in particular, made me just about cry. It reminded me of the most beautiful woman I know.

Dislike the editorial changes in punctuation and capitalization
    By Susan
I don't like the way the editor has altered Dickinson's original punctuation and capitalization. I would like to see a complete collection such as the Thomas Johnson edition that arranges the poems by the year or approximate year of composition and also tries to honor Dickinson's original punctuation and capitalization.

    Rather difficult famous poems
    By Israel Drazin
This free kindle book is the first in a series of three books containing the poems of the famed poet Emily Dickenson (1830-1886). Since Dickenson is so famous and mentioned quite often, it is arguably a good idea to become familiar with her poetry. Dickenson wrote them with no intension of publishing them, and they were published by her friends. Although she wrote many poems, she only published three or four of her poems during her lifetime. Dickenson was a recluse and left her house infrequently. She also did not like to talk to people or reveal what was on her mind. Her poems do not follow the usual rules of writing poetry. The editor of these selections states her poems suggest the poetry of William Blake and contain profound insights into nature and life. The titles of the poems were given by the editor not by Dickenson.
This volume contains comments by the editor telling us that Dickenson’s handwriting was so bad that it was difficult to tell when she wanted a dash, a comma, or a period and when initial letters should be capitalized.
Readers may find many of her poems difficult to understand. For example:
    Soul, wilt thou toss again?
    By just such a hazard
    Hundreds have lost, indeed,
But tens have won an all.
    Angels’ breathless ballot
    Lingers to record thee;
    Imps in eager caucus
    Raffle my soul.

Unique and poignant qualites make this one stand out
    By Heather Tiemens
Throughout the course of his extremely successful career, Horatio Alger rarely deviated from his traditional framework for his stories - until this one. Adrift In New York tells the story of a girl, struggling against the offer of a bigamous marriage and subsequently cast out by her guardian, and a boy, who discovers for the first time in his life that there is more to life than stealing and dishonesty. It is a wonderfully moral, yet at the same time superbly entertaining story, and one worth paying any amount to read.

"... an emotionally powerful debut ..." ~ Publishers Weekly

Kieran Roark awakens in a wheelchair, unable to remember anything. As part of a classified experiment, he will have one year to learn his identity and recover his memory, or he will be euthanized by the state.

Scientist Berkeley Bennett has one mission: manipulate Kieran’s emotions in an attempt to bring back his memory. But when she falls in love with him, she is forced to make a harrowing decision that may cost Kieran his life.

What Kieran knows could save Earth from a coming war. Whether he believes the future is worth saving is another matter. Racing across an unfamiliar world in a body he does not recall, Kieran needs to discover who he was and, more importantly, who he is.

    From Publishers Weekly
Ikenberry's amnesiac protagonist's struggle to discover his identity in a world several centuries ahead of his 21st-century experience is an emotionally powerful debut, despite the author's simplistic understanding of romance and politics. On a dystopian Earth, the protagonist awakes—without his memories—under medical supervision. He's sent on a walkabout through Australia, and eventually a degraded United States, to organically integrate his mind to the present by sparking memories of his past. A female guide protocol A.I. inside his head becomes fiercely protective of him, and a scientist named Berkeley Bennett comes to him in an attempt to enhance recall with emotion. Meanwhile, competing factions watch him as an experiment to determine whether clones of soldiers from a time when humans knew how to fight could become an effective, expendable army to engage an alien threat. Though Ikenberry's storytelling is ungraceful in places, his insight into the human side of the military mind has strong appeal. (Jan.)

    Review
"Kevin Ikenberry has achieved a rare feat; a military SF novel that although set in a fascinating future has almost nothing to with the technology or the alien enemy and almost everything to do with the what makes a soldier worthy of that name, their humanity.  I love when an author puts their heart and soul into a book." - Eytan Kollin, Co-Author of The Unincorporated series--"Sleeper Protocol evokes the best of military science fiction. A wonderfully intriguing premise, heart-pounding action, and plot twists that keep you guessing. Highly recommended". - D.L. Young. author of Soledad
--"A fascinating and provocative exploration of how the forces of memory and love can shape one's identity and potentially alter the course of the whole world. Sleeper Protocol is an equally entertaining and engaging story that will keep you thinking long after you've finished the last page." - Josh Vogt, author of The Cleaners series
--"Sleeper Protocol is a gripping adventure that pits the best and worst of humanity against the best and worst of technology in a bleak future-Earth that's all-too-plausible. The taut pacing and deft storytelling make this a real page-turner, while the multi-layered characters and emotional resonance of the journey make it a story you want to read again and again. Technologically thrilling and heart-wrenchingly human, Sleeper Protocol is a first-rate addition to the genre." - Chris Mandeville, bestselling author of Seeds: a post-apocalyptic adventure

    Enthralling
    By A Voracious Reader
*Book source ~ A review copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.

Waking in a wheelchair in Australia he has no idea who he is, what’s going on or even what year it is. He’s told he’s part of an experiment; he needs to remember who he is and he now has 323 days to do that or the government will euthanize him. Everyone in this time has a neural interface, but to the people around him he will be a null, a sleeper. Even though he also has an interface, his is different. No one will be able to tell who he is. The clock is ticking. Unknown to him, there are people working behind the scenes, some to help and some to hinder. In which camp is scientist Berkeley Bennett who shows up out of nowhere and takes an interest in him? With help from his protocol he named Mally, Sleepy sets out to find himself.

This is a different and unique look at the future, alien contact, medical science and political maneuvering. I have to say, the United States in this tale sure is bleak. Yikes! And politicians are just as bad then as now. Kieran Roark, AKA Sleepy, is an excellent character. I love how he works through everything and follows his gut. His protocol, that he named Mally, is weird and ambiguous as to which side it’s (she’s) on. She’s essentially a program, but starts to develop a personality. Hence the weird factor. I didn’t fully understand the concept of the sleepers. Seemed like a ton of money and resources for such a long shot, but maybe that was the point. The future generations are pretty pathetic and I sure hope this story isn’t prophetic or we are totally screwed.

I did not like Bennett, not even a little bit. And I totally did not buy their insta-love. It felt shoe-horned in for added drama and made me cranky. Maybe if they’d actually spent more time talking and building a foundation for their relationship instead of humping every chance they got I might have believed it more. Probably not. It’s hard to believe anything about Bennett when she’s a lying manipulative skank. Frankly, I was hoping she’d die and Kieran could find a woman worthy of him. I liked the General though. I hope he can keep up the work he’s doing. That end bit with Mally gave me the heebie jeebies. Wtf?

While Kieran’s story has a resolution, I’m left with the feeling there may be more coming in this futuristic world. Other sleepers, Mally, and the Grays gunning for Earth…yep. I’d say those storylines should be seeing the light of day.

A New Twist on Dorothy and Oz!
    By Amazon Customer
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I enjoyed "Sleeper Protocol" by Kevin Ikenberry. It was a well-written, well-planned, and highly researched novel.

Ikenberry’s worldbuilding was phenomenal. I definitely knew the story was set in the future. At times the technological references were a little heavy-handed, but I expected this from a male author. It’s something I’ve noticed in reading books by men. If there’s technology or science involved, descriptions tend to be more involved. But it’s not a distraction, just a different way of writing. In "Sleeper Protocol", it’s welcomed. It was a style which kept me grounded in the story.

The main character’s interaction with an artificial intelligence reminded me of the movie “I, Robot”. Mally, the AI, lived beyond her boundaries. She knew what she was, but she wanted more. At one point in the story, the characters commented that AI did not do well with emotions. Perhaps this is a warning.

I loved the references and forecasting done by Ikenberry–California’s coast was destroyed by earthquakes, the devastating Californian drought, water wars between states, recycling, the various wars fought by this country’s military, ethanol development. All proof of the tons of research Ikenberry did to create this post-apocalyptic tale.

Ikenberry sprinkled futuristic warnings throughout the novel starting with the misuse of AI. The best one involved humanity’s overindulgence in technological entertainment–the Cubers. Another one is mankind’s pursuit of wanting more without having to really work for it.

The character of Kieran had to be my favorite. His connecting with his emotions surprised me. Kieran started the story as a blank slate. As he progressed, he became such a likable person. I celebrated his discoveries (the good ones) and felt his pain when situations overwhelmed him.

Berkeley became a likable character. Her interactions with Kieran made her more human. Before she met him, her persona was rather clinical. She was cold and didn’t seem to care for anything other than her work.

I loved the plot of "Sleeper Protocol". It was imaginative and intriguing. I certainly hope there’s a follow up. I need to know if Mally gets to live out her dream. Of course, I have to find out if the Greys really return.

    Highly enjoyable
    By Steve R
Sleeper Protocol was an engrossing read, something like 'Neuromancer' meets 'Old Man's War.'

A man--the sleeper--wakes in Sydney in the 24th century with no idea who he is. He must figure it out quickly before those who do know prevent him from ever finding out.

The story takes place entirely on Earth, far from a galactic battle that humanity will soon have to face. Some on Earth want to proactively prepare for it, while others would prefer to ignore it outright. The sleeper alone could be the key to a successful outcome. Throw a rogue AI into the mix and you have a peek into a much larger world that hopefully the author will flesh out in later books.

This is not a book of non-stop action, but what action there is is fast paced and well written. It certainly qualifies as Military Science Fiction, but don't expect a major set-piece battles. (Hopefully all that will come in subsequent books!) That said, there are some poignant moments, especially near the end, that I imagine will be very moving to American military veterans.

Finally, Sleeper Protocol is also full of prescient reminders about the importance of fighting for that which we believe in, lest we lose it all. (As the sleeper mused "... I'm part of a culture of wanting more and doing less. Sleepers are supposed to fight for people who forgot how to fight for themselves.")

All in all, a thrilling and thoughtful read.

A view from the other side
    By CT
Sometime in the future, the Sex Gates appear out of nowhere. Don falls through it accidentally, and comes out the other side as Donna. He (er, she) and his friends, and the world, try to come to terms with the repercussions of the sex gates.
A book about gender swapping. Nothing new in science fiction, but this one is done rather well. The biggest surprise for me was how the future was handled. Much science fiction (especially media based sf) has only a handful of advancements. In this near future world everything is advanced. Internet and TV have combined, people carry personal computers (some of which can be implanted), medicine and minor surgery can be accomplished at home with special kits...there's even beard cloths. Wipe face with it and your beard is gone (God, I wish I had one of those). It's nice to see a future world thought out to such detail, instead of just having faster cars.
They managed to cover a lot in terms of switching genders. After Don falls through the gate, they are back at their home drinking. Don almost drops the bottle of booze because it got heavier. Everything seems bigger when he holds them in his hand. He has trouble walking because his hips are so different (he feels like their unhinged). And he is upset because he needs to go to the bathroom but he doesn't know how.
As the title suggests, there is a LOT of sex in this book, almost to the point of being gratuitous. Given the nature of the book, though, it's understandable.
My only real complaint is that the writing is not very crisp. It's slow and plodding in places. It's obvious that this was the authors' first attempt at writing. Once you get past that, though, it turns into a pretty good study on how society might react to being able to switch genders (can only do it once though...well, for the most part anyway). It ends with a lot of questions unanswered, many of which are supposed to be covered by the other books in the series. IMHO, this is worth checking out.

    An inventive tale
    By Margaret Marr
If you could go through a gate to cure a sickness or to restore your youth, would you? What if, along with the remedy, you came out the other end as the opposite sex?
"The Sex Gates" follow the life of four college students who learn to cope with the changes after one of their own, Don, innocently walks through one of the first gates that appeared on earth. He came out the other side as Donna. They strive to understand the gates while making political statements about religion and politics among themselves and having sex orgies on a regular basis. It seems the gates opened up even more of a fascination with sex and what it would be like to have sex as the opposite sex.
People all over the planet started going through the gates, hoping for a better life on the other end. The gates brought protests and religious opposition, chaos and war.
The story takes place in the future, but humanity is ever the same. Whenever something life-changing happens, there are those who oppose it, those who embrace it, those who take advantage of the chaos, and those who stand on the sidelines and watch.
A stirring read that makes you think long after you've read the last page.

    Good Idea, Awful Writing
    By Solace Winter
I have read many e-books lately, or at least e-books printed into actual books. Loose ID has been one of my favorite publishers, and so I'm sorry I strayed and read this story. The thing about most e-books is that they are written in the plainest language with a lot of sexual interaction that could not be passed off in regular books, at least not before this, it is becoming more and more likely now. What made other e-books worthy of 4 stars and this one only worthy of 1 is plain and simple... the writing was awful. Written in the same verse as, say, a child's story, it does not excel in anything further than the adult themes. I don't mind the sudden 'dumbing down' of books, but I resent that they feel that we can not hope for something a little more intellectual in our science fiction, erotic or not. These authors had a great idea, it was just too bad that writing it was done overnight as quickly as possible (or so it seems).

Oh, and the amount of errors are redundant and trippable, hard to get into a story where you are wondering where the spell checker was.
