About the Author
E.C. Jarvis is a British author working mainly in speculative and fantasy fiction genres. For the last thirteen years, Jarvis has been working her way through the ranks of the accountancy profession in various industries. During ten of those years she has also been writing."It was always a hobby. I'd knock a poem out every now and then, or enter something into a short story competition, with very little success, but that never stopped me. There has always been an underlying need to write. It comes and goes with varying intensity, but it's always there, like an itch that needs to be scratched."Her first success at publishing was a poem in a collection titled Fear Itself published by Forward Poetry in 2012. Following a three year hiatus where she "couldn't even bring myself to write a shopping list", 2015 saw a turnaround that has seen her complete four full novels, gain a publishing contract, win a number of online writing competitions and is on track to complete her first series. She lives in Hampshire, England with her husband and daughter and cat.

Fast action and intelligent writing!

I love it!

This debut novel of E.C. Jarvis is an impressive work of steampunk romance that sends you off on an adventure with a flying start. It has lots of action and intrigue to offer with every chapter and so the book never felt like it dragged on at any point. In fact it's incredibly eventful and it could fit under many categories other than steampunk romance. It has elements of action, mystery, humor, horror, erotica and fantasy. It might sound like too many ingredients but it's all very well blended into one consistently awesome story. It also has elements of strong gruesome violence which frankly at some points in the book was quite scary once I realized *spoiler alert* how much the main character had changed and what they had become capable of *spoiler alert*. But then again, it's refreshing to see that the author is keeping it real rather than sugar-coating it. This is no fairy tale. By no means is this book all about fast action though, it has plenty interesting characters, plot twists and layers that'll keep your mind just as busy with your own theories of what might happen next as the story unfolds, as your heart beats with the action. Unfortunately I can't write about it here as I would risk spoiling way too much. I highly recommend this book, and if you like it as much as I you'll surely be in for another treat as the second and third book arrives!

Highly Recommended!

The Machine was a great and entertaining read. I wouldn't normally read a book of this genre, however, the cover art drew me in and after reading the synopsis, I couldn't not read it. E.C.Jarvis has a knack for capturing the reader's attention and maintaining it throughout the novel. Her descriptions were concise, helping to build the setting yet allow the reader to use their imagination without over doing it. She did a wonderful job with character development and how each event shaped the characters throughout the novel. I particularly love Cid's character and his relationship with the cat, Imago. Their relationship provides the comic relief in the story and it is enjoyable to read. The author's dialogue really blew me away; it felt incredibly natural, and not once did I feel confused as to which character was speaking within any given moment throughout the novel. Her use of vocabulary was great, and seemed to fit perfectly for this style of genre. I would've loved for the final battle scene to have been extended a little more than it was, but it was still satisfying. I highly recommend this book and cannot wait until the second book of this trilogy to be released. You will not be disappointed.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: THE MACHINE BY EMMA JARVIS
When pen meets paper, Miss Jarvis knows how to spin a tale. The Machine
presents us with a narrative of our heroine, Larissa Markus, a shop keeper
assistant and her curious cat, Imago, as they are whisked into a perilous adventure
met by clandestine plots and unforeseen passions. In doing so, our heroine,
Larissa must learn to survive a legacy which she holds in her possession, an
heirloom given to her by her mother. Even deeper, something greater in herself
holds yet another mystery. What connection is made by this artifact she holds dear
and the very Machine devised by a brilliant professor and richest man int the city?
Ripe with an almost classic Indiana Jones flare into this surreal world in an
industrial city centered around a place called the "Hub", Miss Jarvis challenges our
since of adventure. In this fast paced story, the author tests our attention to
fundamental aspects of building characters while clearly connecting them in a
succinct plot line. In doing so, she has set an attainable tempo that will keep the
reader bated and yearning for more!
