About the Author
J.J. Fitch is a 27-year-old writer and the author of the Kingdoms of Ash series. Born in Kansas, she moved with her family all around the Midwest during her childhood and still calls the middle of the good ol' USA her home.
Her very first literary achievement was a poem published during the third grade. From there, J.J. Fitch decided that her poetry skills had plateaued and she discovered her true love: Fiction. She began work on her debut novels as a student in her MFA in Writing program. Between writing and cooking up new recipes in the kitchen, J.J. Fitch devotes her time to crime shows, traveling, and game nights with friends.
She currently resides in South Dakota with her husband and two dogs.

Gripping, Suspenseful, and Addicting!

This book is a frighteningly accurate picture of where our world is heading. Money is valued over people, woman are less human than men, and things have gotten so bad that families are selling their children just to survive. This is dystopian fiction at it's best, taking the world we live in and turning it into a hyperbole of itself.
In the mist of it all is Lana and Aden, and you experience this world through them and their struggles. It's one conflict after another, building tension, and explosive ending. The author fearlessly subjects her characters to the worst things that could happen to them, but they are strong and soldier through, albeit not unscathed.
I look forward to reading more about this pair and seeing their (hopefully) eventual triumph in a world where the odds are stacked against them.

Looking for your next fantasy series? Look no further...

I was so excited to read this book and I was not let down. The story moves fast right from the beginning and stakes are quickly raised and raised again.
Aden and Lana are perfect opposites, counter-balancing one another both in personality and in the story pacing, chapters alternate between each of their stories. Without spoiling anything I will say that I loved how their magic takes shape. It's cool in style and it works for the story. It incorporates a sort of ever-present danger that Fitch does a great job of entwining into the background feel of most scenes. There is a lot of very real evil and very real danger for them both, but something worse and more powerful is hinted at. I definitely would want out of Ridgeback if I were there.
It reminded a bit of the Eragon series at times, which is a positive, but it didn't have all the excess that wore me out when I was reading those books. As Aden and Lana's characters take shape and I got to know them, I could see how things could go sour for either one. I was clearly on their side, but I was never quite 100% sold on their methods--it kept things interesting. Aden is super type-A and drives the story. She's all action. But I have a feeling Lana will end up being the surprise in the series. I'll also say that Fitch handled the "training" period of Aden really well. I've seen a lot of fantasy characters become near super-heroes seemingly overnight. Even though it's a fast read, that doesn't happen here. This is well-crafted fantasy.
I cannot wait to see what happens next--Mostly to see some more dragon-infused fighting ;)

Sorry author, too much head-hopping for me to keep going.

Oh, man. Where to start?
I loved the blurb. Loved. Loved. Loved! It.
The story fell so far below the blurb’s bar; I feel ripped off.
Now, I don’t normally read the sample, because I have found, one, by the time I go to read the novel, I’ve forgotten that I’ve read the sample. This usually makes me think I’ve read the story before, so I rarely continue past the sample pages before giving up on it. Two, I don’t usually read the sample because I don’t normally buy a book unless I know and trust the author will deliver a pleasant story. Instead, I stick to the free books. That way, I’m not out anything if they’re bad, and if they are good, I can buy the author’s next offering worry free.
Man, I wish I had read the sample.
The story is written in omniscient, shallow, third person PoV. I haven’t liked that style of writing since I left the 80s. Not only is the story 3rd person head-hopping, the sentence structure is clunky!
If that sort of thing doesn’t bother you, then by all means, buy this book and read it. But if the 80s and early 90s style of writing bugs the ever loving sh!t out of you like it does me, then you need to pass on this one.
