Powerful sports sci-fi

THIS IS BRALL is a taut, compelling read. Like the best science-fiction, this novel presents us with a world that twists familiar elements of our own world, in this case our cultural fascination with violence and the commodification of athletes, and asks what price we are willing to pay to entertain (and be entertained). In this near-future world, Lukas Tranic is less than two years away from finishing out a contract in the brutal world of brawl ball (aka brall)--a no-holds barred competition like rugby on steroids. All he has to do is survive--something that becomes increasingly difficult when a new drug changes the landscape of the game. Lukas is a wry, likeable narrator who manages to humanize an otherwise brutal sport. Perez's novel will appeal to fans of sports fiction and science fiction alike, particularly fans of John Scalzi, who like their science fiction whip-smart and grounded in important ethical questions.

It's so refreshing to read a novel that's has a good story and good writing

Very well done! It's so refreshing to read a novel that's has a good story and good writing. I was especially impressed by the unique characters and the intricate challenges they faced in brall. I recently took a torts class where we discussed the legal issues surrounding the NFL concussions, and found a lot of similar ideas at play here. I'd highly recommend this book for a fun, suspenseful read.

"Concussion" in a Dystopian Future

I'm so glad I got to read this book after reading all those studies about concussions in the NFL. This book does such a great job of exploring the burden violent games has on players, and why players still love the game. If you have any interest in football or sci-fi, you should definitely read this book.
