Stapledon projects two separate futures for humanity, depending not on the outcome of World War II but on the failure or success of a future "Tibetan Renaissance" to influence the temper and ideology of the militaristic empires that threaten it.

Another Look At The Future Of Humanity
By Dave_42
Prior to this work, one could consider all of Stapledon's prior works to be the same vision of the future. "Darkness and the Light" doesn't fit as easily with his other works, largely because Stapledon's predictions in "Last and First Men" were already far off the mark. However, predictions are not the main purpose of Stapledon's works, and if one sets aside that aspect, this could be viewed as a more detailed look at the First Men. That being said, the decision on whether or not to fit this book in with his previous works is one which is left to the reader, as this book can easily stand on its own as far as its content is concerned. Written in the darkest days of World War II, this book focuses on the concept of the Darkness and the Light, and a decision point in the future of which path the human race will take resulting from a Tibetan Renaissance which will take place. If it is successful, humanity moves towards the Light, but if it fails then humanity heads towards Darkness.

The book is divided into three sections. The first is titled "Crisis" and deals with the history (or future as it actually is) leading up to the Tibetan crossroads. This section covers the rise and fall of several world powers, culminating in one power led by Russia, and the other led by China. Between the two comes the rise of tiny Tibet with its Renaissance and its movement towards the Light, its presence causes a massive impact on both of the large empires which now must deal with this new threat to their corrupt way of life.

Section two is titled "Darkness" and it deals with the future history which occurs if the Tibet Renaissance fails. Stapledon details the creation of a world empire, followed by the total collapse of civilization through its various phases. He continues on to the end of Man which results from the world taking this particular path. This is a bleak future, one without hope and it results in the extinction of man and ultimately the destruction of Earth. This future is much shorter for Man than the future which results from the other path. There is a brief period in which a single world government is created, but it is only able to last a relatively short period before the collapse.

The third and final section is "The Light". In this section Stapledon details the future history if the Tibet Renaissance succeeds. Unlike the "Darkness" future which holds out little positive, the success of the Tibet Renaissance does not result in a future which is completely "Light". The survival of Tibet still leaves the two other empires in place, and there ensues a long struggle before the world unites, and even then there is a period where regional demands force difficult compromises upon the rest of the world. There are additional challenges even when the world appears to unite, as discoveries about the nature of the universe reveal.

There is no section to sum up these two futures; they are merely presented as two paths which humanity might take, and only humanity can decide which one it will take. Taken literally that decision is also a long way in the future, but one can and should think about this work and the period in which it was written. There are clear parallels to the situation faced by Stapledon's England at the time this was written. This aspect of the book is significant, and I think it is often lost on readers today. Even when factoring that aspect in, this book falls short of Stapledon's "Last Men in London" and "Star Maker" which have a similar style of narrative, but it does make the reading of this work more interesting and less like a reworking of the first part of "Last and First Men".

An American soldier of fortune pursues a Japanese war criminal through the streets and alleyways of war-torn Peking in this edge-of-your-seat thrill ride from the author of The Chinese Bandit

Peking, 1948. In the midst of a brutal winter, the Communists tighten their stranglehold on the ancient capital, preparing to strike. Peasants starve, students riot, police crack down, and an entire city shivers on the edge of revolt.

A decade ago, Maj. Jack Burnham was an American civilian living in China when the Japanese invaded. Now, he has returned on a mission to capture a notorious war criminal before Peking falls to the Red Army. Kanamori Shoichi raped, murdered, and pillaged his way through China during World War II—he also broke Burnham’s nose. If caught, Kanamori will be brought before a tribunal and made to pay for his crimes, large and small. But finding one man in a devastated city of millions is no simple task.

Luckily, Burnham has the help of a beautiful Chinese doctor eager to help her people find justice, as well as his own expert knowledge of the language and culture. But when he finally locates Kanamori, the showdown Burnham has sought for so long will be far stranger and more dangerous than he ever imagined.

The Last Mandarin is the 2nd book in the Far East Trilogy, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

“Stephen Becker said that a writer, or any artist, should want to accomplish four things with his work—educate, impress, edify, and entertain. An artist can make a living, he said, by doing any one of those four well. A good artist does at least two. A master, like Becker himself, does all four, and well.” —Joe Haldeman

About the Author
Stephen Becker (1927–1999) was an American author, translator, and teacher whose published works include eleven novels and the English translations of Elie Wiesel’s The Town Behind the Wall and André Malraux’s The Conquerors. He was born in Mount Vernon, New York, and after serving in World War II, he graduated from Harvard University and studied in Peking and Paris, where he was friends with the novelist Richard Wright and learned French in part by reading detective novels. The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Becker taught at numerous schools throughout the United States, including the University of Iowa, Bennington College, and the University of Central Florida in Orlando. His best-known works include A Covenant with Death (1965), which was adapted into a Warner Brothers film starring Gene Hackman and George Maharis; When the War Is Over (1969), a Civil War novel based on the true story of a teenage Confederate soldier executed more than a month after Lee’s surrender; and the Far East trilogy of literary adventure novels: The Chinese Bandit (1975), The Last Mandarin (1979), and The Blue-Eyed Shan (1982).

The Gifted Writer
By Writetrak
Every so often you come across a really good action/adventure story that jumps out of the gate and races along to the winner's circle. Stephen Becker's THE LAST MANDARIN is one of them. Having read THE CHINESE BANDIT I thought Becker had an interesting style and knowledge of China and the foreigners who stumble upon it. THE CHINESE BANDIT too was a good book but this book, THE LAST MANDARIN, is better. It is the story of an American government agent in search of a notorious Japanese war criminal in China shortly after the end of WW II. Of course, it's more than that with a carefully crafted, stylized, at times brutal storyline that, if you want high adventure and perhaps another educated look at China, will grab and hold your interest. I usually donate books when I'm done with them. This one though is a keeper.

Good Reading
By Anna Priscilla
If you don't have any background of the history of the Japanese invasion of China or the internal conflict between the Nationalists ad the Communists, you are at a disadvantage in reading this fine work. However, the strength of the novel lies within the author's wonderful grasp of Chinese culture and thinking. It's a very poignant, humorous, philosophic display of the culture of the time. Most outstanding for me was how well the author displayed his knowledge of the language and how it eloquently and poetically shows the character of the Chinese people at that time period. I loved it.

This is a book worth reading
    By Richard Stafford
This is one of the very finest of autobiographies. Theodore Roosevelt writes with style and elan. He thinks profoundly, and he presents his own moral views with great vigor. Some of passages reflecting his experiences as a rancher in North Dakota - whose range extended into Montana - would have been exciting to read even if included in collections of the most popular western fiction ever written. Had such authors written them, the adventures he recalls in these passages would have enhanced the reputations of famed writers such as Zane Grey or Bret Harte, Louis L'Amour or even the great modern masters of historical Western lore such as Noel M. Loomis or Larry McMurtry. The days he recalls are those during which the West was as wild as it ever became.
His political experiences especially as a reformer intent on overcoming corruption wherever he found it also are detailed in these pages. They truly are historically important.
His experiences as Police Commissioner are revealing and because of them it is easy to understand why his picture hangs on the wall of the office of Police Commissioner (portrayed by Tom Selleck) in the currently popular TV series BLUE BLOODS.
The Theodore Roosevelt advocacy for women's suffrage and for thoroughly equal rights for women is wonderfully presented in his inclusion of his exchange of letters with a 45 year old woman who had given birth to nine children and reared them all only to find that her conscientious devotion to her family had put her at a disadvantage. It had limited her exposure to many exciting influences and made her believe she had become "boring" to her husband and even her own children. In her letters, perhaps in reaction to the fact that he was nominated for the Medal of Honor for his actions as a warrior who was constantly exposed to enemy fire while leading his Rough Riders (from the front rather than from the rear) in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, she addressed him as Colonel Roosevelt rather than President Roosevelt.
In this fine book, Roosevelt details his political experiences, including his reluctance to become McKinley's vice president. In this way he reveals the clarity with which he perceived how the opponents and rivals he had made as governor of New York were active in forcing the issue.
When McKinley was killed just six months into that four-year term, Roosevelt refused to make wholesale organizational changes , but actually advanced McKinley's policies.
As a naturalist and president he became one of the greatest and most able conservationist who ever lived. He had camped with John Muir and had lived a life compatible with the kind of conservation work that he undertook as president . He created the Forest Service. He allocated vast areas for national parks and set up systems of special protection for other primal locations. He set aside at least five vast wilderness areas as national parks and protected dozen more as wild-life refuges and safe areas. He launched preliminary efforts that later influenced BLM policies that preserved much that the nation and the culture otherwise might have lost.
As everyone knows, under his administration and by virtue of his efforts, the U.S. took over from the French and built the Panama Canal. He negotiated the peace that ended the Japanese-Russian war and for that effort was awarded the Nobel Prize.
There is no question that he is a talented writer and that he lived a life worth recording. Some passages in this fine book may seem too detailed and unnecessarily defensive, but for readers interested in the political history of one of the most generous, tough-minded, culturally useful and beneficial of our presidents it is or contains a moral vein that rivals in purity and worth all the legendary ores of the Comstock Lode. It is well worth the efforts to mine it.

This book should be required reading for any student of American history. In it we learn how Theodore Roosevelt became one of America's greatest presidents. In his own words we can go back in time and see our country as he saw
It. It was a time in America when great wrongs were righted and great deeds we're done.
I THOROUGHLY loved this book !

    Canmar Passing, by Mark Snowden

From a leading authority on orality Mark Snowden comes CANMAR PASSING – a wild ride to bring hope to a people who have rejected literacy but need to hear and act on the Story that will save them from destruction.

One of Jupiter’s moons has been knocked out of orbit. The destruction reveals humanoids are living under its surface. And they are headed directly toward Earth.

An astronaut team tries to reach them. When they are trapped on Canmar, new Ambassadors, including Derek and Grace Seale, get on Canmar as it passes very near Earth. In fact, it's enough to create Scuff Zones.

In order to be saved, Canmarians must bring personal escape pods we call Thumpers to the surface. They must learn that what once was considered an act of insanity is now where they must travel to jump to safety. The people of Canmar have rejected a literate way of thinking, so the Ambassadors must convey their Message of Hope in story form.

The clock is ticking as United Nations Commandos begin their sinister work.
    Who will make it?

This book includes discussion questions and a epilogue explaining the role of orality, especially in cross-cultural contexts. The book may be used in academic settings. It's not just about good vs. evil, but how communication can hit the target by using oral-preference communication.

Canmar Passing is overtly Christian in nature and carries a missionary-type theme throughout. However, it ultimately relies upon starting a movement that will depend upon the faith of those who can hear and pass along the Story of Hope.

Great Sci-Fi Novel with Christian Undertones
    By Rebecca Wolfe
First off let me start off with a disclaimer that I am a good friend of the author. However, I am usually much more critical of my friends and family, so this is not necessarily a good thing! Canmar Passing is a sci-fi fiction novel with a Christian undertone. I am an avid reader and big fan of doomsday, apocalyptic and dystopian fiction. This is similar in feel to those genres. It is about an planet that is hit by asteroids and is found to have life on it. The people of Earth decide that they must try to save those on that planet. I won't go into any more detail as I don't want to give away any of the storyline. As with most self-published books, it could use some more editing. Also, I didn't feel like I really connected to any of the characters on the level that I like to when reading. Overall, though, it was an interesting read and kept my attention the entire book. It is an excellent first try to fiction writing for my friend, Mark. And I can see him only getting better! He is an expert at orality and he has another great Christian non-fiction book Truth That Sticks: How to Communicate Velcro Truth in a Teflon World (LifeChange) available if you are interested.

    I enjoyed this story line
    By Connie
I enjoyed this story line! It has strong missiological overtones and incorporates orality, religious, end of the world, and sci-fi elements as well. I think there's probably a somewhat narrow audience for this sort of book, but I fit into it! There were many formatting errors in the Kindle version that required some careful reading to understand and I found one plot mistake (probably caused by editing), and a couple other typos, but maybe future versions can address these. Still, I really enjoyed the book and read it in less than 48 hours because it captured me!

    LOVED this story!
    By Linda Bemis
Great creativity, remarkable story that should be shared with generations to come! May we all value the heart of this story, a priority of truth being told and the value being a responsible library of the stories of truth, well shared in a reproducible way.

    Enter David Innes
    By Vilbs
Having already created two highly memorable science fiction heroes in Tarzan and John Carter, Edgar Rice Burroughs begins his third major series with David Innes. With friend Abner Perry, they dive their "mole", or burroughing machine, straight through the earth's surface where they discover the savage land of Pellucidar. Here, where dinosaurs still exist and mankind is enslaved by the reptilian Mahars, David and his friend are forced to face unknown perils and survive in a hostile environment (and of course, win the beautiful lady).
"At the Earth's Core" is another highly entertaining science fiction novel from ERB. Even though his format is formulaic, you're always assured of fast paced adventure in his novels. Not as groundbreaking as Tarzan or as strong as John Carter, The Pellucidar series is still a worthy addition to Burroughs body of work, and it gets an extra star for the nostalgia of being a personal childhood favorite.

Tarzan joins Jason Gridley in a rescue mission to Pellucidar
    By Lawrance Bernabo
"Tarzan at the Earth's Core" is unique in the Edgar Rice Burroughs ouvre because it is a crossover novel. This was the 13th Tarzan novel and the 4th Pellucidar story and not surprisingly ends up being one of the better offerings in both series. Originally published as a seven-part serial in "The Blue Book Magazine" in 1929-30. The story fits better into the Pellucidar series, where it works mainly as a sequel to "Tanar of Pellucidar," and it is Tarzan fans who would be more lost in this one than readers of the Pellucidar books. The plot is standard fare for a ERB novel, involving a rescue mission, with the key difference between not so much Tarzan's involvement as the idea that the person who needs to be rescued is not a damsel in distress but David Innes, first Emperor of Pellucidar.
Innes is being held in the dungeons of the Korsars, and Jason Gridley (inventor of the Gridley wave that allowed ERB to "receive" the Martian stories from John Carter, which accounts for the other major ERB series) persuades Tarzan to come along fr the fun. Gridley builds a zeppelin and uses it to descend into the land of Pellucidar (do not get me started on the physics involved in a lighter than air ship descending to the Earth's core. Once in Pellucidar Tarzan and Gridley have their separate adventures, and ERB seems to go out of his way to come up with new races of people (e.g., the Horibs) and prehistoric type creatures to beleaguer both of the book's heroes. The romance, of course, happens with Gridley, who meets Jana, the Red Flower of Zoram. Even everybody gets back together and they remember why they came to Pellucidar in the first place.
"Tarzan at the Earth's Core" is a solid ERB pulp fiction yarn all things considered. What makes it work is that Tarzan has some competition for the role of hero in the story. He is more of a major supporting character than the lead, because Gridley is the leader of the expedition and even disadvantaged in the jungles of Pellucidar, where Tarzan finds himself quite at home, even with that weird burning sun in the sky that never sets, manages to hold his own for the most part. Burroughs also includes the set up for the next Pellucidar novel, when Lieutenant Wilhelm Von Horst, the mate of the zeppelin, vanishes. Unfortunately he would have to wait until 1935 to be rescued in "Back to the Stone Age." Meanwhile, Tarzan would go back to his usual run of episodes back in Africa.

The Best of the Pellucidar Stories
    By George R Dekle
Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote a number of series. Some series consisted of as few as two or three novellas. The Tarzan series stretched to 24 volumes. Almost all of the series were interrelated in some way or another. Clark A. Brady maps out the complex interrelationships in Appendix C to his "Burroughs Cyclopaedia" (available from Amazon.com). "Tarzan at the Earth's Core" makes the clearest connection between two Burroughs series. It is the 13th Tarzan novel and the 4th Pellucidar novel.
The Tarzan stories represent some of Burroughs' best work. The Pellucidar stories do not. Burroughs stretches credulity in all his stories, but he takes it to the limit in the Pellucidar stories. In the Pellucidar seriest Burroughs employs a preposterous concept (a hollow Earth with an inner world where time stands still) and adds insult to injury with highly improbable plot twists. This makes the quality of "Tarzan at the Earth's Core" all the more surprising. It stands as the absolute best Pellucidar story and one of the best Tarzan stories. Ironically it stands near the middle of both series.
David Innes, the hero of the Pellucidar stories, is in trouble. Jason Gridley, inventor of the Gridley Wave, hears the radio distress signal from the center of the Earth, and organizes a rescue party. Many stalwart adventurers, including Tarzan of the Apes, enlist in the expedition. Where Innes got to the Earth's core in a mechanical mole, Gridley's party travels there in an airship. Read the book to find out how they fly an airship to the center of the Earth and confront the many perils of the savage world they find.

  • Edgar Allan Poe (/poÊŠ/; born Edgar Poe; January 19, 1809 – October 7, 1849) was an American writer, editor, and literary critic. Poe is best known for his poetry and short stories, particularly his tales of mystery and the macabre. Widely regarded as a central figure of Romanticism in the United States and American literature as a whole, he was one of the country's earliest practitioners of the short story. Poe is generally considered the inventor of the detective fiction genre and is further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. He was the first well-known American writer to try to earn a living through writing alone, resulting in a financially difficult life and career. Born in Boston, Poe was the second child of two actors. His father abandoned the family in 1810, and his mother died the following year. Thus orphaned, the child was taken in by John and Frances Allan, of Richmond, Virginia. Although they never formally adopted him, Poe was with them well into young adulthood. Tension developed later as John Allan and Edgar repeatedly clashed over debts, including those incurred by gambling, and the cost of secondary education for the young man. Poe attended the University of Virginia for one semester but left due to lack of money. Poe quarreled with Allan over the funds for his education and enlisted in the Army in 1827 under an assumed name. It was at this time his publishing career began, albeit humbly, with an anonymous collection of poems, Tamerlane and Other Poems (1827), credited only to "a Bostonian". With the death of Frances Allan in 1829, Poe and Allan reached a temporary rapprochement. Later failing as an officer's cadet at West Point and declaring a firm wish to be a poet and writer, Poe parted ways with John Allan.

All of Poe, and I love it
    By A. Sweeney
All of Edgar Allan Poe's works collected into one hardcover volume. This book has a lot of stuff in it, and I still haven't quite finished it.

I guess what sets this book apart from all the other collections of Poe, is the book itself. It's not annotated, but I couldn't find any collections of Poe that were; however, it does come with a great introduction. And after that, pure Poe. The book is very sturdy, and considering it's price, a great bargain. I personally can't stand the see-saw cut pages that a lot collections like this get, but this book lacks those, and that makes me happy. I also won't waste your time trying to convince how great Poe was, since the fact that you're browsing here means you already know, or at least have a clue.

While any collected Poe book would probably suit you just fine, since there is very little to distinguish them from each other, I would recommend this one, simply because when I was browsing through the various collections, this one appeared to be the best bang for my buck.

Everything You Ever Wanted to Know and a Bit More
    By Marc Ruby™
This edition of Poe's literary output is the latest incarnation of the original 'Complete Tales & Poems' which came out in 1938 issued by Vintage Press. It has served several generations of students and Poe lovers. Needless to say, it's longevity is proof of basic quality and integrity. For the record, it also includes Poe's two essays, 'The Poetic Principal' and 'The Rationale of Verse.' If you want a 'complete in one volume' approach. This is it.

Truth be told, there are a few technical drawbacks to this edition. The first is size. A thousand pages is a lot to deal with. I always feel clumsy reading it. The other big drawback is print size. I am well into the time of life when tiny print is getting difficult to read. Nor do I like narrow margins.

But really, I don't think one can argue about the sheer quantity of good literature for a reasonable price. It can be read, marked up, dragged around and have coffee spilled on it without ever making its owner feel the least bit guilty. Most of the Poe readers of the world will just love this book. Me, I'm a bit wierd. I would rather have a nice leather bound set of the complete works, rather than just the fiction and poetry, a bit slimmer to hand and easier to read. Considering that that would cost over 20 times the price of this paperback I intend to remain satisfied with this even if it kills me.

very lovely. pages smell of vanilla and wood.
    By sharla
I asked for this as a valentines gift, he pre-ordered it. the book protector case itself is pretty nice and sturdy, the book has hard covers, they are lined in a silk like lining, very nice. the detail work makes it look expensive and showy, I like to set it out on my bedroom dresser. the pages smelt like vanilla wood to me, I love to open it and smell that lovely book smell. the first few pages tell edgar's history which was nice. the stories are what you expect from poe.

Return of the Dwarf Lords (Legends of the Nameless Dwarf Book 4), by D.P. Prior

The Nameless Dwarf: the name that is not a name, but is far better than the one he left behind. Freed from the curse that turned him into the butcher of his own kind, he once crossed half a world to protect those who had survived.

Having worked out his penance and resettled his people in Arnoch, the ancient citadel of the Dwarf Lords, Nameless sets up home in the town of Brink.

Now, with everything a dwarf could possibly wish for–a gym, a beer hall, and a bawdy house across the road–his new life is a welcome break from a decade of adventure.

Then a blood-stained dwarf staggers into town with a message of doom: Arnoch has sunk beneath the waves, its last defense against the attack of a five-headed dragon.

The one slender hope remaining to the dwarves lies in their distant past: the Dwarf Lords, who had been created for perils such as this. But for centuries, they have been in exile on Thanatos, a death-world likely to change even the greatest of heroes.

With time running out for Arnoch, Nameless must find the Dwarf Lords and persuade them to come home.

But before that, he first has to survive them.

    Review
"I am leaning towards this being my favorite book in the series." -- Frederick H.

"As usual with this author his characterisation is excellent and he can really bring a landscape to life." -- PhotonQyv

What reviewers are saying about book 3: Revenge of the Lich

"I've called the Shader series the best indie fantasy series that I personally have ever read, and while I really adore the hero of the series, Deacon Shader, Nameless (as his friends call him) is the best sword and sorcery companion that I've run into lately." -- Bookwraiths Reviews

"One thing that impressed me right from the beginning were the fight scenes. Nameless is implacable, but not invulnerable, and the scenes give a good sense of how tough and strong he is, while never descending into cartoonish invincibility. The fights are well-written, clear and concise without skimping on detail or ending anticlimactically." -- Black Gate Magazine

"This book whisked me away at the start, and pulled me back in again and again. Prior's focus on rich characters and progressive plot kept me enticed. Healthy amounts of humor. Plenty of spells. And loads of arse kicking! I recommend The Nameless Dwarf to any fan of fantasy, particularly to those that can't get enough of dwarves." -- Travis Shore

"The Nameless stories grabbed me from the first page and pulled me along relentlessly. You won't want to put this down once you start. Fully-realised worlds? I found Prior's world of Aethir to have been meticulously crafted - this is an author who has done his homework before developing his plot." -- Laurence Scotford

"The plot itself is really quite masterful and aside from the questing/looking for something aspect of the fantasy this story felt fresh!" -- Momma Says Read

"This book is a shogging good time!!! The characters really come alive." -- Doug Ward

What reviewers are saying about book 2: Geas of the Black Axe

"This second book in the Legends of the Nameless Dwarf was a book I found hard to put down... there were many great moments in this novel that I can reflect upon." -- Ray Nicholson (Amazon Top 1000 reviewer)

"D.P. Prior continues to exceed my expectations." -- Frederick H.

"Again Prior brings his characters to life, and gives the reader a full pallet of deep, epic fantasy to savor." -- @DahgMahn

What reviewers are saying about book 1: Carnifex

"Gritty, tense, and brutally tragic. High quality storytelling with great characters and a relentless plot." -- Mitchell Hogan, author of A Crucible of Souls and Aurealis Award winner.

"...by the end I did care about those people--all of them, including Carnifex, were flawed but fundamentally decent people. But I had read The Nameless Dwarf, and I knew what was coming, and how it all ends. That knowledge made the book both hard to continue reading and hard to put down." -- Black Gate Magazine

"A Fantasy Adventure of remarkable scope, populated by many memorable characters. Maybe D. P. Prior's finest work to date." -- Ray Nicholson (Amazon Top 1000 reviewer)

"Whenever I have high praise for a book, I usually like to find at least one aspect of the writing to challenge, but this one's got me stumped. I guess I could complain that it ended all too soon, but then there are three other volumes to enjoy..." -- Laurence Scotford

"It's not often I'm left speechless but this was one of those times. WOW!!" -- Ebookwyrm

"5 Stars is easily earned here and I'm sure it will not be long before we see this, the most unique of dwarves on the big screen! This year is indeed the year of the dwarf!!" -- Scott Morrison

This book is an amazing adventure!
    By Jared
I just finished Return of the Dwarf Lords. As it's all still fresh in my mind I'm left with heaps of questions, as well as great excitement for what bwill come. This book is fantastic! We are once again given an adventure that brings Nameless and Shadrak together. As well as showing a much deeper character arc for Shadrak than we've been given in the past. But for the returning characters, one being a particular surprise for those familiar with the entire universe Prior has created, there are also many new characters. Some I absolutely loved, and some I found myself liking less as the story went on. Aside from characters I wish we had been given more information about the conflict on Thanatos as it seems quite fascinating. I can only hope those characters, and that place will be visited again in the future. As a whole this is an amazing and engaging read. There are many emotional moments, as well as great action and excitement. Nameless may well be at his very best in this adventure, and the conclusion is beyond satisfying. Prior was truly soaring high. I highly recommend reading this entire series!

    You got me again
    By Frederick
D.P. continues to develop his writings of Legends of the Nameless Dwarf by exquisite descriptions whether it be battle scenes or interactions between characters. I love how his story has enveloped other worlds from previous writings blending them all into a journey of discovery. The ending to this chapter of Nameless' life lets you know that the journey still has a way to go. The humor continues in his writings as well and brings a chuckle while reading. I am leaning towards this being my favorite book in the series or at least in the top four written so far. Think it's time to toast D.P. with an Ironbelly's for another job well done.

    Great ideas, not great writing
    By Kindle Customer
Six 18 year olds from six families in one small town share the share the same birthday. The secret of their conception, background and history are slowly revealed (and only partially in this book). Chased by strange enemies, the six go through a series of wild adventures.

I enjoyed reading this book at times but then would be yanked out of the story by poor writing.
    I enjoyed:
    1. Discovering information about the background of the six.
    2. The action and fight descriptions.
    3. The ideas for strange and new places and things

    I disliked:
    1. The immaturity of the six. They often acted like 14-year-olds instead of 18.
    2. We only get to know one character well. The others have little information about them and are stereotypes (the strong one, the smart one, etc.).
    3. The emotions/decisions of the six are unrealistic: goofing around in deadly situations; a character decides not take 3 seconds to try to kill an enemy because he doesn't know if he has time but proceeds to take about a minute to rescue a friend from the same enemy; a lack of an all-consuming drive to know their past by at least one of them, etc.
    4. The relationship between events are not always explained. For example: a guy fires an arrow at a van and the van overturns. We don't know why: did it puncture a tire; or did it have an explosive head or what? No idea.

IMO the ideas in this book were not fleshed out. 3 stars.

Not quite what I expected, not much in favor of Zombies but I suppose it was a reasonably good story. I just wish the authors and/or proofers/editors would learn the forms of lay laid etc and when to use them (sorry a pet peeve of mine).
