About the Author
Michael Thomas first dreamed of becoming a space traveler-or at least a science fiction writer-after seeing the 1956 film Forbidden Planet. He held on to that dream all the way up to the writing of Pax Romana: The Rise of Seren.
Michael currently teaches Spanish and great texts at Baylor University.

In setting out to pen his first novel, let it not be said that Michael Thomas was faint of heart. In “Pax Romana: The Rise of Seren,” Thomas bravely set off to drape a translucent, futuristic techno-tale over a substrate of biblical end-times prophesy. Even taken separately, speculative fiction and eschatological conjecture present a host of potential pitfalls that Thomas managed largely to avoid.
Pax Romana is set in a dystopian Europe where energy domes insulate inhabitants of the prosperous Italian and French capitals from both human rabble and pollution so dense it is referred to simply as the “Haze.” The lead character, Captain Mark Knutson, is an Oklahoma-born fighter pilot for EuroSecure, the European Federation security force based in Rome. He flies against the Federation’s chief antagonists, who are mainly wide-ranging pirates and anarchistic groups from outside the “bubble,” bent on disrupting the lives of envied dome-dwellers. EuroSecure generally has the advantage in technology, though its enemies are not without some technical sophistication.
Thomas’s Knutson is a mildly macho but not uncultured airman predisposed to near-obsession with classical music, holographical virtual warfare and gorgeous women (of which there are two). For this reviewer, identification with the first and last objects of obsession was no stretch. But not being a gamer in the least, the frequent scenes set in fantastical combat were something I personally had to slog through. It’s a reviewer’s shortcoming, though, as I’d expect most readers of this genre to find these scenes among the more entertaining. That said, I did latch onto key biblical symbolism woven into at least one such scene late in the book. I took it to be a foreshadowing of events to be played out in the sequel, which Thomas plainly announces.
As with any work of science/technical fiction, the reader must decide early-on to accept the author’s vision of the future—with all its technological speculations—if any connection with the story’s plot and characters is to be made. Thomas’s vision of an ante-apocalyptic Europe serves well for this tale of the nascent rise of the biblical antichrist foretold in Revelation. For me, placing the prophesy’s culmination in a technically advanced age is preferable to previous attempts to do so in a contemporary setting, as in the seemingly endless Left Behind series of a couple of decades past.
At 240 pages, Pax Romana begs little imposition on one’s busy schedule. Its short, topical chapters are well adapted to the snatch-a-moment-here-and-there reading habits many of us are compelled to practice. As stated earlier, the book was intended as the first of at least a two-part series, and it ends with a crescendo that provides an enticing overture to the second installment (well underway, I understand).
Readers wanting only to breeze through an entertaining story before tackling more voluminous works will find reward here. Those wanting a more complete telling of the tale might do well to wait for the sequel and read the two together.

The glory of New Rome threatened by a mysterious entity

Michael Thomas presents a compelling view of a dystopian world that has seen Rome return to its former glory. Citizens of Romes' domelike Bolla enjoy the luxury of modern technology, while those outside suffer the effects of a ruined environment. Mark Knutson is a EuroSecure pilot and Praetorian Guard soldier charged with enforcing the fragile peace of the region, while terrorists and cults work to undermine the Pax Romana. Mark's former lover, Angela, has become enthralled with Seren, a charismatic figure who has gained many followers by performing miracles. Mark finds himself in the midst of great intrigue as events unfold.
The book's unique narrative progresses in the present tense, giving the story a sense of immediacy. Its scholarly bent incorporates references to classical literature and music with allusions to Biblical prophecy, and invites the reader to interpret the story on a deeper level. A second reading will reveal details that I missed the first time. A great read! I'm looking forward to the next installment.
