Grade 2-4 While this substantially shortened version lacks the rich detail of Washington Irving's tale, it does maintain the combination of humor and eerie atmosphere that characterized the original. Sleepy Hollow was a remote valley filled with strange beliefs and superstitions, a perfect place for an itinerate schoolmaster whose four books include one on dreams and one on witchcraft. When Ichabod Crane fastens his attentions on Katrina Van Tassel, the lovely daughter of a prosperous farmer, he risks the ire of Katrina's other suitor, a young man known for his boisterous sense of humor. A ghostly midnight chase brings the story to its famous double-edged conclusion. The full-color illustrations combine watercolor and lively pen-and-ink drawings. While all of the characters have comic qualities, the hapless Ichabod is pure caricature with huge ears, a beak-like nose, and an emaciated body with knobby joints. The energetic illustrations keep pace with the story to an unusual degree. Bright daylight pastels shift to rich cobalt, emerald green, and blacks for the midnight scenes. The line also becomes increasingly dynamic, ending in a climax of strong diagonals and vivid color. As an introduction to this classic story to readers too young for the Irving original, this edition is superior in both language and illustration to the San Souci version (Doubleday, 1986). A Pleasant Surprise

I grabbed this for the Kindle since it was free, and like the previous reviewer, I only had a vague idea of the story from various cartoon versions.

I was very pleasantly surprised. I've not read anything else by Washington Irving. The story is simple; the prose is easy to read but in spots is downright beautiful. Some of the scenic descriptions border on poetry. Irving writes with a dry sense of humor; and he has faith in the reader's ability to connect the dots, so he doesn't spell everything out.

It's a short read - in print I guess it would be 30 to 40 pages. One GREAT thing about reading it on Kindle is having the dictionary function, as there were a number of archaic terms with which I was not familiar.

I give it 5 stars for the combination of price and quality of writing. If you'd like some good writing, a peek into America (upstate New York) at the end of the 18th century, and a little wit, go ahead and grab it - especially if it's free!

How would you feel if every time you walked outside in the dark, you felt a chill? What if you lived in a town that everyone said was haunted? How would you like it if you were running for your life from a headless horseman? Well that's what the schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane does in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving.

To begin with this book will keep you on the edge better than any other book. When Ichabod is alone in the woods at night and starts hearing noises you have no idea what's going to happen to him. From experience my heart was pumping faster than it ever had before while I was reading a book.

Another good reason to read this book is it will hook you in from the very beginning. It was so good that I was anxious to turn the next page and see what was going to happen. I liked the book so much that I finished the it the same day I started it!

The next reason is it can be scary. When Ichobod is in panic as he rides his horse down the road because he is being chased by the headless horseman you don't know if Ichabod will live or die. Even though it may not be that scary in the beginning it gets a lot scarier later on. Besides the book being scary it is also a love story. Ichabod is deeply in love with the beautiful Miss Katrina Van Tassle but unfortunately so is Brom Bones. He is a rough, bold, and strong man that would do anything to get what he wants. In the book he trashes Ichabod's schoolhouse because he caught him talking to Katrina. That still doesn't stop Ichabod from trying to get the one he believes is his one true love.

Out of all the books that I have ever read The Legend of Sleepy Hollow has hooked me in faster than any other. If you like scary/mystery books this would be the book for you. Although it is a cool book I recommend it to kids 8 years of age and older because of the scary and suspenseful moments the book has in it. So next time you are at the library and want a good book, get The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Then you can get chills in the dark, too!

Enjoyable

This version of Irving's tale is designed for younger children. The illustrations are lovely--not scary at all. I do think, however, that the text is a little long for a 4 year old to sit through, especially since some of the vocabulary and sentence structure is a bit advanced. I'd say this was appropriate for 6 and up.

The Iliad (Ancient Greek in Classical Attic; sometimes referred to as the Song of Ilion or Song of Ilium) is an ancient Greek epic poem in dactylic hexameter, traditionally attributed to Homer. Set during the Trojan War, the ten-year siege of the city of Troy (Ilium) by a coalition of Greek states, it tells of the battles and events during the weeks of a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles. Although the story covers only a few weeks in the final year of the war, the Iliad mentions or alludes to many of the Greek legends about the siege; the earlier events, such as the gathering of warriors for the siege, the cause of the war, and related concerns tend to appear near the beginning. Then the epic narrative takes up events prophesied for the future, such as Achilles' looming death and the sack of Troy, prefigured and alluded to more and more vividly, so that when it reaches an end, the poem has told a more or less complete tale of the Trojan War.

Why another Iliad? Just as Homer's work existed most fully in its performance, so the Homeric texts call periodically for new translations. With this in mind, Fagles offers a new verse rendering of the Iliad. Translation's the Key

I won't try to give yet another summary of the Iliad's plot nor give my insignificant opinion on the importance of Homer to Western Culture. More important is to discuss this translation and the translation of Homer in general.
When it comes to classic works of poetry in translation, such as those of Homer, Vergil, Dante and others, the translation makes all the difference. The type of translation, whether in rhyming verse, blank verse, prose etc., whether it is a strict line by line or more liberal translation, whether the wording and idioms are old fashioned or modern, can play such a great role that one translation may be completely different than another. This fact is probably often overlooked and attributes to the neglect of these classics, since a bad or difficult translation makes the poem seem tedious or dull.
Since Chapman's first translation of Homer into English in 1611 there have been dozens of others. Chapman's translation remains a classic, though its heavy and elaborate rhyming Elizabethan style and old wording make it quite laborious to read today. The next great translation was that of the renowned Enlightenment poet Alexander Pope; his Iliad was published progressively between 1715 and 1720. Pope's translation is in rhyming verse with his heroic couplet and is eminently poetic. It is considered the greatest translation of Homer into English (Dr. Johnson called it "the noblest version of poetry which the world has ever seen") but it is not as plain and straightforward as Homer apparently is in the original. It is mostly for this reason that Pope's translation has been critized as being more the work of the poet Pope than the poet Homer.
Of the more recent verse translations a few are worth recommendation. The latest translation is usually better than its predecessors, though each one is different. That of Richmond Lattimore takes a strict approach. His verse lines are long and the syntax unfortunately seems somewhat unnatural because he is attempting to imitate the stress patterns and flow of the original Greek hexameter. His translation tries to stay as close to the original Greek as possible and retain the form of epic language. The next translation is the one here, that of Robert Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald's translation is more modern, uses a shorter verse line and a natural English syntax. His translation is much easier to read and still retains the nobility of an epic poem. Finally, there is the translation of Robert Fagles. His translation is in blank verse, modern, rapid, simple and flowing. The noble simplicity of Greek style that the art historian Winkelmann so praised should also be found in a good translation of Homer. Like Fitzgerald, Fagles strives towards this and most approaches the ideal set out by the English poet and scholar Matthew Arnold for a translation of Homer: "Homer is rapid in his movement, Homer is plain in his words and style, Homer is simple in his ideas, Homer is noble in his manner." Fagles also uses the accepted Latin form of most Greek names: rather than "Akhilleus" he uses Achilles, rather than "Kyklops" he uses Cyclops. Lattimore and Fitzgerald sometimes annoyingly use the Greek versions, for no valid reason. They should have followed Arnold's advice on this point, who called such unnatural effect "pedantry" and claimed that the insistance on using the Greek variant for well-known names makes us "rub our eyes and call out 'How exceedingly odd!'." Finally, the narrative prose translations are in my opinion the remotest from epic poetry and should be avoided, especially since there are good verse translations available.

A readable Iliad in modern idiom

Robert Fagles's translation of Homer's Iliad is spiritually if not literally true to the original. Both versions repeat set speeches and descriptions in precisely the same words, and the translation exhibits a fairly regular rhythmic beat. But Homer's Greek was chanted, and the set passages were like refrains in which listeners could, if they chose, join in as a chorus. In English, the repetitions sometimes become tedious, especially when the same speech is given three times in two pages, as in the relay of Zeus's orders in Book II. Especially noteworthy is Bernard Knox's long and fascinating Introduction, a masterpiece of literary criticism and scholarship which conveys Homer's grim attitude toward war, the interplay of divine and human will, and the ancient concepts of honor, courage, and virility in the face of the stark finality of death. Knox also includes a succinct explanation of the quantitative, rather than accentual, basis of Greek (and Latin) verse. For easy readability, Fagles's translation is without rival. For elegance and poetry, however, I recommend Richmond Lattimore's older but still gripping and fluent translation.

Not the biggest fan of this translation...

Fortunately, Homer is so wonderful that even fairly imaginative renderings of the text, like Fagles', can't obscure his genius.

I guess I have a bit of a problem with Fagles' translation. When I read Homer, I want to read Homer, not Robert Fagles re-writing Homer. This version reminds me of the comment made to Alexander Pope after he published his version of "The Iliad" - "a pretty poem, Mr. Pope, but you must not call it Homer".

This translation is kind of a modern play on the Fitzgerald - something of an "artistic" version rendered into a kind of de rigeur semi-elliptical poetry-speak, relying on a reconfiguration of lines and sentences, replacement of Homer's own phrases, etc. If that's your bag, by all means get this.

But for me, the best translation out there is that which translates Homer as faithfully as possible consistent with comprehensible English. Fagles' cavalier handling of the source text eliminates this as the "best" translation for me.

Both the Loeb and Lattimore versions are very faithful, but I think some readers may find them fairly difficult, and then stop reading the book altogether, which would be a great shame since The Iliad is well worth reading even in the worst translation.

My two cents is that the translation out there which does the best job of combining fidelity to the original with readability is the Jones/Rieu put out by Penguin. It doesn't have the packaging of the Fagles nor the great essay by Bernard Knox in the front, but I think it does the best job at maintaining transparency, really letting Homer shine through. (But if you have the stomach for the Loeb, you could go hardcore and try that, too. But don't try this unless you're familiar with the entire story first...).

Whatever translation you get, I also recommend buying a CliffNotes to get the necessary background information. Another great resource is Malcolm Willcock's commentary, which I used while I was reading this. If you're going to take the time to read a classic, you might as well try to get everything out of it you can.

Gripping!

This is a gripping story, a real page turner. It combines eco-terrorism with natural disaster -- my kind of book. The author did some serious research which supports his writing about earthquakes, fracking and the geysers at Yellowstone, which in effect make up a volcano. This research is cited at the end of the book.

Tacenda focuses on the experimental partnership between human Karris and nestling Arucken, whose two species seem to have a tense past. The duoare part of an experiment by Arucken's people that involves living andworking together aboard a sentient spaceship - and seemingly testing how the two species can work together and communicate; telepathy included.They face some adversity from other characters throughout the book and their blossoming friendship and its trials make for a great and intriguing storyline.

A read that kept me hooked throughout, left me wanting to know more and - a key aim of most authors, I'm sure - made me want to readthe second book to find out more about this world, its fascinating new species and Kerris and Arucken's ongoing experiment.

A compelling story is told in this book with a nice depth adding a realistic feel. It is told from three different points of view; Kerris, Arucken and Lily (an unaffected child of the Kalinaw colony). These characters have very different perspectives giving the reader a full view of the story and become immersed in the world. These characters have been well crafted making them believable and relatable, each having their own strengths and flaws and behaviours. I found the development of the relationship between Kerris and Arucken very interesting as theyhave very different ways of thinking and mainly communicate telepathically. This leads to some differing opinions on subjects I did not expect, which left me thinking, even once I had put the book down which was great.

Exciting sci-fi read that captures the imagination

This is an enjoyable and interesting story with very likeable characters. Kerris and Arucken are an experimental human and nestling messenger team that find themselves stranded on a new colony where someone, or something, is steeling the minds of children. The pair must discover who is threatening the colonists lives, save the children and return safely to their semi-salient ship. The world the author creates captures your imagination and the unique relationship that Kerris and Arucken have leaves you wanting to know more. Their relationship is complex, they are a couple but not intimate. Whether it's even possible for their two species to have a sexual relationship remains to be seen, but the potential for one seems to hover at the edges of their growing relationship. The inter-species racism in the book can be viewed as a reflection of the prejudices that exists in today's multicultural societies and the derision Kerris and Arucken face is similar to that faced by many cross cultural couples. Even though these reflections are present, they do not monopolize the story line, but instead add a subtle depth to this easy to read story. The book does leave some ends untied at the finish, which leads me to suspect there will be a second novel. I enjoyed this book and will look forward to reading more about this inventive world in the future. I received this ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

In this sci-fi novel, Kerris and Arucken travel through the universe delivering messages and plant life for colonists to start life on various planets. Their first stop in this series brings with it more than they bargained for. Creatures from the sea have been abducting the colonists' children. When the children are returned, they can no longer properly communicate with the adults. The colonists ask the messengers to help, and what they discover is not what anyone expected. Not only that, but Kerris is hell-bent on finding those responsible for the death of her twin sister.

The world the author has created is well-developed with its planets, politics, and peoples--essential elements for sci-fi. Kerris and Arucken are different species, one human and one nestling. Their partnership is an experiment, but one that seems to work.

I enjoyed this well-told story. You'll fall in love with Lily, the little orphan girl who lives among the colonists.

What a weird and wonderful world has Christine created in Tacenda. Colourful and alien but still a world full of characters we can relate to. To use the old cliché men are from mars and woman from Venus; I think this is illustrated here in the relationship between Kerris a human female and Arucken a nestling male. The two have been paired by the Nestling race and work as messengers, delivering goods and information intergalactic. The pairing is viewed sceptically and at times hostilely by both races. For Kerris and Arucken the bond works and the two are very closely connected telepathically. I found their relationship beautiful and it relates closely to the old cliché; you can love and trust someone completely, without fully knowing or understanding them. The story line will appeal to readers of most genres; there is enough intrigue and intergalactic politics to keep you hooked. Kerris is an interesting strong female character. She has gone her own way; committing her life to an alien race and exploring space. She struggles with the loss of her sister; murdered by space pirates, while hiding all of it from her parents. When the pair gets stranded with a group of colonists under attack, she shows she is an excellent diplomat with a lot of courage and tact. I do hope to read more of Kerris and Arucken and the ending of the book was left temptingly open. There is also a lot of humour to lighten the tone; some of it provided by Octavia the space ship, which has a mind of its own. I liked the comment about them getting Octavia to a refuelling station as running out of fuel was not only embarrassing but could lead to a fine. Why did we never see the Star ship Enterprise pull up to a petrol pump? I like a science fiction writer that keeps the tone realistic while creating a completely alien world; it helps the reader connect to the characters and in Tacenda Christine has succeeded admirably.

Another Look At The Future Of Humanity

Prior to this work, one could consider all of Stapledon's prior works to be the same vision of the future. "Darkness and the Light" doesn't fit as easily with his other works, largely because Stapledon's predictions in "Last and First Men" were already far off the mark. However, predictions are not the main purpose of Stapledon's works, and if one sets aside that aspect, this could be viewed as a more detailed look at the First Men. That being said, the decision on whether or not to fit this book in with his previous works is one which is left to the reader, as this book can easily stand on its own as far as its content is concerned. Written in the darkest days of World War II, this book focuses on the concept of the Darkness and the Light, and a decision point in the future of which path the human race will take resulting from a Tibetan Renaissance which will take place. If it is successful, humanity moves towards the Light, but if it fails then humanity heads towards Darkness.

The book is divided into three sections. The first is titled "Crisis" and deals with the history (or future as it actually is) leading up to the Tibetan crossroads. This section covers the rise and fall of several world powers, culminating in one power led by Russia, and the other led by China. Between the two comes the rise of tiny Tibet with its Renaissance and its movement towards the Light, its presence causes a massive impact on both of the large empires which now must deal with this new threat to their corrupt way of life.

Section two is titled "Darkness" and it deals with the future history which occurs if the Tibet Renaissance fails. Stapledon details the creation of a world empire, followed by the total collapse of civilization through its various phases. He continues on to the end of Man which results from the world taking this particular path. This is a bleak future, one without hope and it results in the extinction of man and ultimately the destruction of Earth. This future is much shorter for Man than the future which results from the other path. There is a brief period in which a single world government is created, but it is only able to last a relatively short period before the collapse.

The third and final section is "The Light". In this section Stapledon details the future history if the Tibet Renaissance succeeds. Unlike the "Darkness" future which holds out little positive, the success of the Tibet Renaissance does not result in a future which is completely "Light". The survival of Tibet still leaves the two other empires in place, and there ensues a long struggle before the world unites, and even then there is a period where regional demands force difficult compromises upon the rest of the world. There are additional challenges even when the world appears to unite, as discoveries about the nature of the universe reveal.

There is no section to sum up these two futures; they are merely presented as two paths which humanity might take, and only humanity can decide which one it will take. Taken literally that decision is also a long way in the future, but one can and should think about this work and the period in which it was written. There are clear parallels to the situation faced by Stapledon's England at the time this was written. This aspect of the book is significant, and I think it is often lost on readers today. Even when factoring that aspect in, this book falls short of Stapledon's "Last Men in London" and "Star Maker" which have a similar style of narrative, but it does make the reading of this work more interesting and less like a reworking of the first part of "Last and First Men".

About the Author
Stephen Becker (1927–1999) was an American author, translator, and teacher whose published works include eleven novels and the English translations of Elie Wiesel’s The Town Behind the Wall and André Malraux’s The Conquerors. He was born in Mount Vernon, New York, and after serving in World War II, he graduated from Harvard University and studied in Peking and Paris, where he was friends with the novelist Richard Wright and learned French in part by reading detective novels. The recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, Becker taught at numerous schools throughout the United States, including the University of Iowa, Bennington College, and the University of Central Florida in Orlando. His best-known works include A Covenant with Death (1965), which was adapted into a Warner Brothers film starring Gene Hackman and George Maharis; When the War Is Over (1969), a Civil War novel based on the true story of a teenage Confederate soldier executed more than a month after Lee’s surrender; and the Far East trilogy of literary adventure novels: The Chinese Bandit (1975), The Last Mandarin (1979), and The Blue-Eyed Shan (1982).

The Gifted Writer

Every so often you come across a really good action/adventure story that jumps out of the gate and races along to the winner's circle. Stephen Becker's THE LAST MANDARIN is one of them. Having read THE CHINESE BANDIT I thought Becker had an interesting style and knowledge of China and the foreigners who stumble upon it. THE CHINESE BANDIT too was a good book but this book, THE LAST MANDARIN, is better. It is the story of an American government agent in search of a notorious Japanese war criminal in China shortly after the end of WW II. Of course, it's more than that with a carefully crafted, stylized, at times brutal storyline that, if you want high adventure and perhaps another educated look at China, will grab and hold your interest. I usually donate books when I'm done with them. This one though is a keeper.

Good Reading

If you don't have any background of the history of the Japanese invasion of China or the internal conflict between the Nationalists ad the Communists, you are at a disadvantage in reading this fine work. However, the strength of the novel lies within the author's wonderful grasp of Chinese culture and thinking. It's a very poignant, humorous, philosophic display of the culture of the time. Most outstanding for me was how well the author displayed his knowledge of the language and how it eloquently and poetically shows the character of the Chinese people at that time period. I loved it.
