interesting character names
By Artist
I enjoyed the plot to "The Seven Goblets" and I have to say the author (Maria Chatzistogianni) is very imaginative. I particularly enjoyed the very unique names she had for characters. This book is a nice short read which is great for a nice weekend book or read through out the week on your lunch breaks at work. I liked the humor woven into the chapters as well as the dialog between characters. The authors writing was easy to understand and she gave a lot of information in a such a short book. I think this book would be great in audio book form as well as this written form and just as enjoyable for listeners to go on this journey.

THE SEVEN GOBLETS is a quick read though it contains a lot of information within its 189 pages.
Introducing a whole new world of elements and fairytale, when you finish it you have this wide warm smile on your face.
Worth reading but I would have like the story to be longer.

Super book! You will not only find a fun, flirty, and provocative story, but you will also be pleasantly surprised at how comedy the story is. The author Maria Chatzistogianni is a master at using colorful & descriptive dialogue that really brings the imagery of the scenes to life in your imagination. Each and every sentence in this book will definitely make you feel something and relate. It really kept my imagination in high gear the whole time I was reading it. I strongly recommended the book to all!

  • Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells of a girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. Its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre.

    Amazon.com Review
Source of legend and lyric, reference and conjecture, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is for most children pure pleasure in prose. While adults try to decipher Lewis Carroll's putative use of complex mathematical codes in the text, or debate his alleged use of opium, young readers simply dive with Alice through the rabbit hole, pursuing "The dream-child moving through a land / Of wonders wild and new." There they encounter the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts, the Mock Turtle, and the Mad Hatter, among a multitude of other characters--extinct, fantastical, and commonplace creatures. Alice journeys through this Wonderland, trying to fathom the meaning of her strange experiences. But they turn out to be "curiouser and curiouser," seemingly without moral or sense.

For more than 130 years, children have reveled in the delightfully non-moralistic, non-educational virtues of this classic. In fact, at every turn, Alice's new companions scoff at her traditional education. The Mock Turtle, for example, remarks that he took the "regular course" in school: Reeling, Writhing, and branches of Arithmetic-Ambition, Distraction, Uglification, and Derision. Carroll believed John Tenniel's illustrations were as important as his text. Naturally, Carroll's instincts were good; the masterful drawings are inextricably tied to the well-loved story. (All ages) --Emilie Coulter

    From Publishers Weekly
What the publisher calls the "ultimate" edition is in reality simply another look at Carroll's story in a beautifully produced volume--with an unusual twist. Edens has compiled various illustrations to the text that were made between 1865 and 1933. He presents the work of more than 25 artists, including John Tenniel, Arthur Rackham, Peter Newell, Willy Pogany, Gertrude Kay and Margaret Tarrant. But the result is a disjointed book that is disorienting to read. Illustrations by different artists, in color and black-and-white, are juxtaposed more to the text than to each other, and their varying styles create an effect that is more chaotic than instructional. Artistic comparisons would have been facilitated by captioning the illustrations with the date and artist's name, but unfortunately these details are provided only as a listing at the end of the book. To Eden's credit, many of the illustrations have been long out of print and are a joy to behold. The book appears to be more of a commercial exercise than a new look at Alice. All ages.
Copyright 1989 Reed Business Information, Inc.

    From School Library Journal
Grade 4 Up-- Edens has compiled and arranged illustrations from 25 editions of Alice in Wonderland published in the early to mid-1900s. The result is a fascinating look at a variety of illustrative styles. This is far less jarring than one might expect because the original illustrator, John Tenniel, has so strongly influenced his successors that their interpretations are often similar in design. In fact, the fascination in these pictures is the differing details--Alice's dress, her hairstyle, and her expressions tell much about the time period and the artist's viewpoint. Edens has also done a fine job of integrating the pictures with the text. He varies interest by utilizing full-page plates, half plates, vignettes, and even reducing some illustrations to fit the design so the book flows fairly well and these myriad illustrations blend into a whole rather than distract the eye. The reproduction is excellent. A must for collections with historical interest in children's literature and large libraries. --Karen K. Radtke, Milwaukee Public Library

The name of this review is called "Haddocks' Eyes"
    By A Customer
I finally, and seemingly permanently, misplaced the 40 year old copy of 'The Annotated Alice' (which I had pilfered from my mother's bookshelf) for the last time. I can't go more than a month or two without it so I rushed to buy a new copy...just weeks before the more beautifully bound 'Definitive Edition' was published. No matter, now I have two (perhaps even three if the original turns up).
My point is that this book contributed more to my understanding of logic and wordplay than several semesters of college philosophy classes. If you've read this far then I am probably preaching to the choir but 'Alice in Wonderland' can hardly be classified as a childrens' book, dispite Disney's attempts to do so. The concepts Lewis Carroll and Martin Gardner bring to this tale cover such areas as set theory, meta-language, Aristotelian logic, topography, game theory, several pre-Socratic logic paradoxes, and even quantum physics. Yet John Tenniel's original illustrations remain as an welcome tether to the original publication.
Gardner does a wonderful job of bringing all the various aspects of these two stories together as he illuminates layer upon layer of meaning that might not be evident to an American audience or, for that matter, a 21st century one. My favorite gems are the French and German translations of The Jabberwocky.
This book ranks in my top five favorite books of all time.

The Looking Glass Shows Hidden Humor
    By Ian
I always enjoyed the twisted logic and unique sence of humor that I found in Lewis Carroll's Alice tales, the only problem I encountered was that some of the jokes required information that was no longer common knoledge. For example: when Alice continually misquoted the old English nursery rhymes I found myself wondering what the actual versions were, information that every child in Victorian England could have easily told me but that has since been lost to obscurity. After reading through this book I found the answers to all my original questions as well as many that I never considered asking. At first I thought that the commentary would strip the original work of its character and reduce it to a lifeless shadow. I found that the commentary did exactly the opposite, in a surreal way it made the book even more entertaining to read. The incredible detail of the commentary and the wide range of topics covered made the comments themselves seem part of the insane illogic that pervades the realms of wonderland and looking glass house. This does not mean that the coments themselves are insane or illogical, on the contrary they are all intresting and many offer new insights into the books, what makes the commentary so entertaining is how the story of "exactly 7 and one half" Alice is juxtaposed with comments on how the structure of the plot relates to physic and Robert Oppenheimer. Altogether I found the Annotated Alice to be a wonderful read and a gorgeous book which I recomend to anyone who enjoyed the original tales.

    Master of Nonsense
    By Bryan A. Pfleeger
The Annotated Alice provides a treasure chest of information on the two Alice books and on the man, Lewis Carroll who was responsible for their creation.
Martin Gardner provides annotations throughout the texts of both Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There. Gardner's annotations help explain the inside jokes and mathematical and linguistic puzzles that fill the stories.
Reading the Alice books as an adult is quite a different experience than it was as a child. The books' complexity really stands out on a careful reading. In fact, what are generally regarded as children's stories can be amazingly frustrating to read due to the complexity of the language and the almost constant stream of puns that are sometimes lost on modern audiences. One must remember that the stories are told purely for fun. Unlike other Victorian children's literature one gets no morals, plot development, or character development here. Alice is a yound child who stays a young child throughout her adventures. She neither matures or learns anything from her adventures.
This is a very nice volume in its own right. It contains complete authoritative texts of both books and includes the supressed episode "The Wasp in the Wig." The original Tenniel illustrations are crisp and clear. The only difficulty is that the annotations are placed on the same page as the text in a small column that sometimes supplies more information than the text itself. The annotations themselves range from the definitional to the clearly eccentric. One can read all of them or only the ones that he or she is interested in.
On the whole this is an excellent volume well worth the effort to read if one has any interest in the world of nonsense literature.

  • Julius Caesar (Classical Latin: [ˈɡaː.i.ʊs ˈjuː.li.ʊs ˈkae̯.sar]; July 100 BC – 15 March 44 BC was a Roman statesman, general and notable author of Latin prose. He played a critical role in the events that led to the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire. In 60 BC, Caesar, Crassus, and Pompey formed a political alliance that was to dominate Roman politics for several years. Their attempts to amass power through populist tactics were opposed by the conservative ruling class within the Roman Senate, among them Cato the Younger with the frequent support of Cicero. Caesar's victories in the Gallic Wars, completed by 51 BC, extended Rome's territory to the English Channel and the Rhine. Caesar became the first Roman general to cross both when he built a bridge across the Rhine and conducted the first invasion of Britain.

"John Cox's edition of Julius Caesar is very user-friendly--it has copious and concise explanatory notes, generous selections from Shakespeare's sources, and a critical introduction that does a remarkable job of highlighting the main lines of interpreting the play over the centuries." Julius Caesar is a key link between Shakespeare's histories and his tragedies. Unlike the Caesar drawn by Plutarch in a source text, Shakespeare's Caesar is surprisingly modern: vulnerable and imperfect, a powerful man who does not always know himself. The open-ended structure of the play insists that revealing events will continue after the play ends, making the significance of the history we have just witnessed impossible to determine in the play itself. John D. Cox's introduction discusses issues of genre, characterization, and rhetoric, while also providing a detailed history of criticism of the play. Appendices provide excerpts from important related works by Lucretius, Plutarch, and Montaigne. A collaboration between Broadview Press and the Internet Shakespeare Editions project at the University of Victoria, the editions developed for this series have been comprehensively annotated and draw on the authoritative texts newly edited for the ISE. This innovative series allows readers to access extensive and reliable online resources linked to the print edition.

    About the Author
William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on England’s Avon River. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children—an older daughter Susanna and twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare’s only son, died in childhood. The bulk of Shakespeare’s working life was spent in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He enjoyed success not only as a playwright and poet, but also as an actor and shareholder in an acting company. Although some think that sometime between 1610 and 1613 Shakespeare retired from the theater and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616, others believe that he may have continued to work in London until close to his death.

Barbara A. Mowat is Director of Research emerita at the Folger Shakespeare Library, Consulting Editor of Shakespeare Quarterly, and author of The Dramaturgy of Shakespeare’s Romances and of essays on Shakespeare’s plays and their editing.

Paul Werstine is Professor of English at the Graduate School and at King’s University College at Western University. He is a general editor of the New Variorum Shakespeare and author of Early Modern Playhouse Manuscripts and the Editing of Shakespeare and of many papers and articles on the printing and editing of Shakespeare’s plays.

    No Fear Shakespeare Julius Caesar
    By Milton P. Thornton
As an older adult that is somewhat isolated I started the study of Shakespeare on my own with just a big book that had annotaions that were often more cofusing than enlightening. It was rewarding but it was like plowing through a field full of big rocks. I found reading two or three scenes of an act with No Fear Shakespeare and then reading the corresponding section of Asimov's Guide to Shakespeare great fun. No Fear explains the nuances of language and setting while Asimov gives rich insight to the characters and events that makes it so easy to remember the varied characters and plot twists.

I found this method makes Shakespeare infinitely more easy to not only get through but savor and enjoy. My plan is to get as much of No Fear Shakespeare as I can including all the plays that I have gone through so laboriously in the past and apply the No Fear/Asimov technique. I hope it works as well for you as it did for me.

The classic book report... with a twist.
    By Andy Kelley
We all know the story of Julius Caesar. The tragic event that led to chaos. Though it is a popular television and movie theme, we know it in large part due to Julius Caesar, William Shakespeare's famed play. It includes moving scenes such as Caesar's infamous "Et tu Brute", and Marc Antony's moving "Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears." This book, put together by Folger Shakespeare Library, helps to bring this story to life.

This book, about 239 pages total, features "explanatory notes conveniently placed on pages facing the text of the play." While these notes may not answer every question you might come up with, I believe they are very helpful to the average reader (such as myself). These pages also provide plenty of room for anyone who prefers to annotate, or write down thoughts, in their books.

Also featured on these pages is a scene summary for every scene. The scene summaries really helped me truly understand the Shakespearian language. I am very grateful I ordered this copy of Julius Caesar, since it has the tools necessary for the average reader to fully grasp what is happening. I picked it up right here on Amazon.com.

I can hardly find negative aspects to this edition. The best I can come up with is that the words and phrases noted are not already underlined or marked somehow by the publisher. (I know, not a big deal.) The story is great, a must-read for all history buffs or even the casual reader. All-in-all, if you are looking to read Julius Caesar, or just some Shakespeare to impress your friends or teachers with, check out the Folger Shakespeare Library's edition of Julius Caesar. I highly recommend it.

So, what are you waiting on? Get to it!

    Not what I expected
    By Wendy Williams
This series is great for students. The books are divided into three sections: the first section is a kind of history of Shakespeare and his plays, the second section is the actual play, and the third section is more of the details of the play,i.e. where the story came from, how it is performed, how to directed the play. All in all it was a great for teaching the works of Shakespeare.

The King is Dead, Long Live the King!, by KARL L. BARNETT

The date is January 08, 2035 and it has only been five years since two Swedish scientists discovered a vaccine to stop and reverse aging!
A young man, obviously twenty-ish in appearance, Larry King, sits directly across the desk from his guest on the Larry King Live show at the CNN world news headquarters in New York.
Looking bright eyed and full of youth, Larry stares directly into the lens of camera one and says.
"Today is January the eighth, two thousand thirty five and had he lived, the King of rock and roll would be one hundred years old today! And here with us tonight to share a few of his memories of the King, is the legendary man himself, the actor, director, producer and quite possibly the next President of these United States! Mister Chuck."
Suddenly Larry is abruptly cut off in mid speech by his guest, who states.
"Larry before you go any further, Id like to tell you a story that your viewers, might
find to be even more interesting, than just a few memories of the King!"
Larry looks puzzled, at what he has just heard. Smiling, once again he looks straight into the camera lens. A smirk appears upon his face as he asks.
"What could be a more interesting story, on the one hundredth birthday of the iconic legend, Elvis Aron Presley?"
The guest smiles, a big toothy smile as he stares straight into the lens of camera 3. In a slow southern drawl, with that all so familiar voice pattern, he says.
"I-I-I was born, January the eighth, nineteen thirty five in Tupelo, Mississippi!"
He pauses for a few seconds, as one of those unique moments of life bursts forth into existence. The entire studio is a deathly quiet. I mean the type of quiet, so calm, so still, that you can actually hear your own heart beat. The guest asks.
"What"s wrong Larry? Cat got your tongue."
For the first time in his live, Larry is speechless. His mouth hangs wide open, in a state of total surprise.Regaining his composure, Larry asks,
" Are you trying to sit here and tell the world, that you are actually Elvis Aron Presley?"
Once again the studio goes quiet, so quiet that you could hear a pin drop from a mile away!
Every camera is trained very tightly upon the guest, zoomed in even close enough to reveal what appears to either be a bead of sweat or a tear drop at the right tear duct.
    The guest responds.
"Well let me begin by saying, that I have a recent DNA report here within this folder!"
The guest waves a bright yellow envelope in front of himself.
"This DNA report should put to rest any question concerning my statement."
He lays the envelope down on his lap, then says,
"Before I hand it over, there's one question i'd like for you to answer!"
The guest stares deeply into Larry's eyes then asks.
"Do you want to hear my story? Well do you, Larry?"

    ELVIS LIVES!
    By Amazon Customer
What an amazing story! Reminds me of the many twists and turns in the Forest Gump saga. There is plenty of adventure, comedy, and at certain points some down right deadly serious action! It delves deeply into the urban myth surrounding the possibility that Elvis still lives. This book will change your perspective on the life and times of the king, Elvis Aaron Presley! This story is a MUST READ!

    An awesome book
    By Amazon Customer
I whole heartedly agree with the first comment, this story takes a look at the possibilities of an alternate history- in that we really don't know if Elvis is dead!
I understand what the author is saying,if Elvis is alive, he is highly intelligent, and the cream always rises to the top! Meaning if he is alive, he is not pumping gas at a service station! He's hiding in plain sight!

  • The story begins with the unnamed narrator arriving at the house of his friend, Roderick Usher, having received a letter from him in a distant part of the country complaining of an illness and asking for his help. As he arrives, the narrator notes a thin crack extending from the roof, down the front of the building and into the lake. Although Poe wrote this short story before the invention of modern psychological science, Roderick's condition can be described according to its terminology. It includes a form of sensory overload known as hyperesthesia (hypersensitivity to textures, light, sounds, smells and tastes), hypochondria (an excessive preoccupation or worry about having a serious illness) and acute anxiety. It is revealed that Roderick's twin sister, Madeline, is also ill and falls into cataleptic, deathlike trances. The narrator is impressed with Roderick's paintings, and attempts to cheer him by reading with him and listening to his improvised musical compositions on the guitar. Roderick sings "The Haunted Palace", then tells the narrator that he believes the house he lives in to be alive, and that this sentience arises from the arrangement of the masonry and vegetation surrounding it.

    Review
"Poe's work as a whole is a series of haunting improvisations on themes from the macabre that are hard to categorise, dazzlingly original and posthumously influential on an extraordinary range of writers from Baudelaire and RL Stevenson to Yeats, Wilde and Borges."
    — Observer

"His work continues to enthral. His greatest tales (The Fall of the House of Usher, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Pit and the Pendulum) radiate a dark humour and mockery that strike an oddly modern note."
    — Sunday Times

"His reputation as a master of the grotesque and macabre has veiled the real cause of his fame: an astonishing mastery of language and literary technique which made Arthur Ransome, himself no mean story technician and a considerable literary critic, liken his stories to rare coloured goblets or fantastic metalwork."
    — Independent

    About the Author
American short story writer, poet and critic, Poe's life is as well-known as his stories. With a short military career and a post as sub-editor, he wrote in different genres of literature. Famous the world over, his produced pieces are eloquent of his genius.

    From AudioFile
This production of Poe's Fall of the House of Usher is nothing less than spectacular. The cover gives a long list of credits which is evidence of the many unique facets of the production. Brad Hill has composed an original score which evokes Poe's wonderful, moody prose. Battista has just the right voice and inflection to create the atmosphere of escalating terror. Wonderful sound effects (galloping horses, creaking doors, etc.) reflect brilliant editing. A warning on the cover states that the tape may test the limits of the ordinary sound system. While a Sony Walkmanª gave no problems, a more sophisticated system made the story even better. S.B.M. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

    Indispensible edition!! A fine collection.
    By AU Student
I've found this particular edition of Poe's (albiet incomplete) collected works to be the best and most accurate blend possible of his short fiction, poetry, and most important prose. The annotations and background information are also extremely helpful unlike some works that do not translate the Latin, for example. MOST IMPORTANTLY I've found this work to contain the most perfect editions of his poetry, as opposed to other collected works I've owned that have unusual deviances, such as "monody compels" (this ed.) vs "melody compels" of another edition. This has indeed become a faithful companion and my particular copy has become well-worn! I would suggest obtaining as a supplement a seperate edition of Poe's complete short stories and possibly also an edition of his collected prose, although this volume contains his perhaps most important work "The American Drama" anyway. Cheers, hope this helps!

Creepy fictional masterpieces of horror, poems and selected essays by the original Baltimore Raven superstar Edgar Allan Poe
    By C. M Mills
Long before Alfred Hitchcock, Bram Stoker or Arthur Conan Doyle there was Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849). Born to a Boston actress; married to 13 year old Virginia Clemm and tormented by the demons of the soul this American original is the most popular worldwide American author.
In this excellent Penguin collection the editors have collected his best short stories, poems and essays in a valuable volume.
    Among the masterpieces are:
The Murders in the Rue Morgue and The Purloined Letter featuring the pre-Sherlock Holmes detective skills of Auguste Dupin.
The Fall of the House of Usher in which a gothic mansion mirrors the madness, incest and horror within the soul of its demented owner.
The Pit and the Pendulum an unforgettable tale of the Spanish Inquisition where the suspense is almost tactile in its intensity.
The Masque of the Red Death in which Death is the unexpected visitor at a masqued ball.
The Gold Bug shows Poe's mathematical mind at work as a buried treasure is discovered.
In addition to other tales we find here such great poems as "The Raven"; "The Bells" and "Ligea".
A sample of Poe's literary essays are included. One essays deals with his review of the American theatre; another reviews Hawthorne's "Twice-Told Tales" and the best of the lot details the creative process the poet used to create his 108 line masterpiece "The Raven."
This is a fine edition which could be used in the classroom or for pleasure reading. Enjoy the outre world and lush writing of Edgar Allan Poe!

    NOTES

I was, at first, shocked that "The Conqueror Worm" was absent from the poetry, but then I remembered that the poem is contained within the text of "Ligeia." At 488 pages, this is an ample edition of Poe's Works. The excellent Introduction is 39 pages long, and it concentrates on Poe's life and reputation rather than on discussing the tales and poetry. This volume is a fine introduction to Poe, for those who are approaching his writing for the first time.

The Specialists (The Classic Crime Library Book 5), by Lawrence Block

“The colonel was right. You had to draw a line through mankind, a wavy line but a line, and on one side you had Good and on the other side you had Evil. There was good and bad in everyone, sure, and every shitheel was some mother’s son, and it was all well and good to know this, but when push came to shove, it was just words; there was Good and Evil with no shades of gray and Judgment Day came seven time a week.”

Meet the Specialists, five good men, Manso and Murdock and Simmons and Giordano and Dehn. They scattered when they took off their green berets and returned to civilian life, but now and then their colonel picks up the phone and gets in touch—and they get together to do as they did in Vietnam.

Colonel Roger Elliott Cross left a leg in Vietnam. His men came home physically intact, but each bears scars nonetheless. But when they come together, teamed up to right wrongs, they are a powerful force for good.

And,by doing good, they also manage to do well. Because when five specialists take on a Mafia-owned bank, why shouldn’t they turn profit on the deal?

If you saw The A-Team on television, this may seem familiar to you. When Lawrence Block saw the A-Team, it seems uncannily familiar to him, and he had the feeling the show’s producers had read his 1968 novel. But he decided, wisely or not, that life is too short for litigation. Now, years later, the TV show has vanished and the book lives on. Isn’t that as it should be?

This Classic Crime Library ebook of The Specialists includes as a bonus the first chapter of the next book in the series, The Triumph of Evil.

“Block is one of the best!” —The Washington Post

    About the Author
Lawrence Block has been writing award-winning mystery and suspense fiction for half a century. His newest book, pitched by his Hollywood agent as “James M. Cain on Viagra,” is The Girl with the Deep Blue Eyes. His other recent novels include The Burglar Who Counted The Spoons, featuring Bernie Rhodenbarr; Hit Me, featuring philatelist and assassin Keller; and A Drop Of The Hard Stuff, featuring Matthew Scudder, brilliantly embodied by Liam Neeson in the new film, A Walk Among The Tombstones. Several of his other books have also been filmed, although not terribly well. He's well known for his books for writers, including the classic Telling Lies For Fun & Profit and Write For Your Life, and has recently published a collection of his writings about the mystery genre and its practitioners, The Crime Of Our Lives. In addition to prose works, he has written episodic television (Tilt!) and the Wong Kar-wai film, My Blueberry Nights. He is a modest and humble fellow, although you would never guess as much from this biographical note.

    A guilty pleasure
    By Craig
It's not Eight Million Ways to Die or even Girl with the Long Green Heart, but I couldn't help liking this book. It's fast-paced, with wildly implausible action scenes and tongue-in-cheek humor. (I particularly liked the part where one of the commandos would tape a knife to his leg and then sneak up behind someone, remove the knife quiety, and kill him. Really? How does the intended victim not hear you ripping duct tape off your leg?)

I realize this book is deeply silly on many levels. But it's like watching a James Bond movie from the 70's: Yes, the plot barely makes sense. And yes, the characters are little more than cardboard cutouts. But you still can't turn away because it's so much fun seeing what comes next.

One interesting twist in this story was that the "good guys" were arguably morally worse than the bad guys. In fact, throughout the book, the menacing gangsters never actually killed anyone. Oh, they threatened and they beat a few people up, but nothing like the "good guy" commandos who basically ran around killing gangsters, gangster wives, and hapless security guards almost at random.

But hey, who doesn't like a good shoot-em-up every once in a while?

This forgotten gem is the reason I love eBooks. A long-fan of Block (and of pulp fiction from days past), It's so nice to discover books I've never heard of. Definitely worth a few hours of your time. I finished this book instantly wishing there was another I could start.

    Excellent Lawrence Block title
    By LA
Ah, what might have been. This novel reads like it's part of a series, but, alas, Lawrence Block only wrote about these guys in one book. Too bad because this is LB at his best. The characters are strong, the plot is fun, and it's dark, dark, dark. It won't take you long to read it, so go ahead and find this one. One of my favorites.

Aston West is back in TM Hunter's latest book ALL GOOD THINGS.
    By Cali H.
Unfortunately, so are the Cassus twins and they are out for the kind of twisted revenge, power, and profit one can only find in the 'verse of Aston West. Just when it looks like things are finally starting to go Aston's way with a new ship, a solid romantic relationship and business partnership with longtime love Rione Sc'lari, the evil Elijah Cassus strongarms his way into Aston's life, complete with his resurrected brother Lars (who still hasn't forgiven Aston for killing him.) They make Aston an offer he can't refuse, a way to absolve himself of the death of Leah Jordan, but first they have a little job for him.

Under the watchful eye of his faithful shipboard computer Jeanie, who now has a holographic form thanks to the new ship, Aston navigates the treacherous waters of balancing relationships and fending off old enemies with hidden agendas. With twists and turns as only TM Hunter can devise, Aston's adventures take him everywhere but where he wants to go, garnering new enemies and (most probably) new arrest warrants along the way. Against the backdrop of explosions and mayhem, my favorite anti-hero wrestles with impossible choices, torn between self-preservation and staying true to what few scruples he has left.

ALL GOOD THINGS is a page turner that kept me up well into the night and a must for any Aston West fan!

    Storylines Coming Together
    By Lyn Perry
In All Good Things, author T.M. Hunter brings the storyline from his novel, The Cure and the characters and adventures from his first three Aston West novels together with smooth and seamless plotting. It's a great development for avid fans of the series (as I am), but if this is your first foray into Hunter's classic style space opera universe, you won't be lost or left out of the know. The author's storytelling in this latest book gets you right into the action and fills in the backstory as needed (no info dump here) while maintaining a sold and purposeful pace from start to finish. The double crossing and surprising revelations keep you hooked and the soul-searching inner turmoil that besets Aston lends credibility to an admittedly wild premise (which is spoiler material, so I won't mention it here).

If you're into space pirate action, twists and turns and plenty of tension, seeing the bad guys get their comeuppance, and cheering for the underdog, then any Aston West novel will suffice, especially this latest novel where all the threads seem to come together quite nicely. 4 1/2 stars from me and recommended for sci-fi and space opera fans of all ages. (Disclaimer: I'm one of the author's beta readers and meet with him regularly for coffee and conversation about writing, the business of writing, and life in general.)

... to be a beta reader for this book and enjoyed it as much as I did the other books ...
    By Joyce Scarbrough
I was lucky enough to be a beta reader for this book and enjoyed it as much as I did the other books in the series. Aston West is a reluctant hero whose self-deprecating attitude and humor won me over in Heroes Die Young. I love being able to count on seeing familiar characters return and also to expect new characters--good and bad--to enter the story and amp up the action. As a lifelong Star Trek fan, I love how these books remind me of the original series. Can't wait see what happens to Aston in the next book!

Wide Is the Gate (The Lanny Budd Novels), by Upton Sinclair

Upton Sinclair’s Pulitzer Prize–winning saga continues as Lanny Budd faces the horrors of Nazi Germany and steps into the fire of the Spanish Civil War

Lanny Budd’s dedication to social justice and political action has placed a serious strain on his marriage to his heiress wife, Irma, but as he moves through the 1930s, the international art dealer is unable to turn a blind eye to what is happening in Europe. As the Nazi Party solidifies its power in Germany, Lanny recognizes a golden opportunity to make a difference when his arms dealer father strikes a business agreement with Hermann Göring, Adolf Hitler’s second-in-command.

Robbie Budd’s alliance with the Luftwaffe commander and Lanny’s art world reputation enable the younger Budd to move easily among the Nazi high command and gather valuable information he can transmit back to those who are dedicated to the destruction of Nazism and Fascism. It is a dangerous—albeit necessary—game that Lanny is playing, and it will carry him from Germany to Spain on a life-and-death mission on the eve of the Spanish Civil War.

The fourth installment of an eleven-book series, Wide Is the Gate continues Upton Sinclair’s literary journey through the tumult of the twentieth century. An astonishing mix of history, adventure, and romance, the Lanny Budd Novels are a testament to the breathtaking scope of the author’s vision and his singular talents as a storyteller.

    Review
Praise for the Lanny Budd Novels
“These historical novels engulfed me in the thrilling and terrible imperatives of history. . . . Sinclair’s historical acumen and his calculations about powerful institutions—government, press, corporations, oil cartels and lobbyists—remain remarkably shrewd and often prescient.” —The New York Times

“Few works of fiction are more fun to read; fewer still make history half as clear, or as human.” —Time

“When people ask me what has happened in my long lifetime, I do not refer them to the newspaper files and to the authorities, but to [Upton Sinclair’s] novels.” —George Bernard Shaw

“A great and well-balanced design . . . I think it the completest and most faithful portrait of that period that has been done or will likely be done.” —H. G. Wells

    About the Author
Upton Sinclair (1878–1968) was a Pulitzer Prize–winning author, activist, and politician whose novel The Jungle (1906) led to the passage of the Federal Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act. Born into an impoverished family in Baltimore, Maryland, Sinclair entered City College of New York five days before his fourteenth birthday. He wrote dime novels and articles for pulp magazines to pay for his tuition, and continued his writing career as a graduate student at Columbia University. To research The Jungle, he spent seven weeks working undercover in Chicago’s meatpacking plants. The book received great critical and commercial success, and Sinclair used the proceeds to start a utopian community in New Jersey. In 1915, he moved to California, where he founded the state’s ACLU chapter and became an influential political figure, running for governor as the Democratic nominee in 1934. Sinclair wrote close to one hundred books during his lifetime, including Oil! (1927), the inspiration for the 2007 movie There Will Be Blood; Boston (1928), a documentary novel revolving around the Sacco and Vanzetti case; The Brass Check, a muckraking exposé of American journalism; and the eleven novels in the Pulitzer Prize–winning Lanny Budd series.

... series when I was in high school and was glad to see it reappear as an e-book
    By Charles Kovacs
I first read the Lanny Budd series when I was in high school and was glad to see it reappear as an e-book. The series as a whole is a good look at the history of Europe from 1914 to 1950, but strictly from a Socialist point of view. Upton Sinclair was an American Socialist all his life and a of the 1930's should not be confused with Senator Sanders. Thus, Sinclair was a believer of conspiracy theories revolving around "Big Business," the evil of capitalism in general, etc. Typically of his ilk and time, he is at best an apologist for the Soviet Union - not a single mention of the Gulag, the famine in the Ukraine, the reign of terror in the 1930's. There is occasional mild criticism but on the, his attitude matches the general Socialist policy of "no enemies to the Left."
Notwithstanding the above, these volumes are still a pleasant read, as the author has a literate style, as well as a detailed (if biased) knowledge of history, as well as of music and painting. Wide is the Gate is probably among the weaker volumes of this series; it is slow, and there is too much agit-prop with regards to the Civil War. As in the other volumes, Sinclair's limited knowledge of military, naval and economic matters remains to the fore, there are spelling errors. In my opinion, these books are over priced, but perhaps Amazon has positioned them for the nostalgia market

The Rise of Fascism and the Death of Spain: Europe, mid 1930s
    By Johns
Book 4 of the World's End series and this covers the spread of Fascism to Spain. The Fascist international policy is stated to be: Fool those who are foolable, buy those who are buyable, kill the rest. The German war machine is seen to be increasing its manufacture of arms, with increasing debts. One character sees that this can only result in one end: the slaughter of the workers. In France, a lawyer called Pierre Laval is seen as a rising star and Nazi Germany is seen as a potential ally of "Marianne" to defeat Bolshevism. In the USA, the general idea of free spending, promoted by Roosevelt, was coming to be accepted and prosperity was reviving. The conquest of Ethiopia by Italy is covered. In Germany a new character enters the series: Rudolf Hess.

So, in 1934, the people of Spain didn't know what was about to hit them. Manuel Azaña was in charge. The population was unhappy that the country had stayed still for two years with the result that the Anti-Marxist coalition carried the elections. Refugees were already fleeing Spain, with "peasants being ground under the heel of the army and church forces". The book details how Spanish landowners fled to France to discuss how to work with Mussolini to destroy socialism in Spain. It also reveals how Britain didn't want any left-wing government in Spain, for fear that profits from British investments in iron ore, copper and mercury mines there would be reduced. The Spanish Catholic Church meanwhile "kept the masses blindfolded and under the chains of superstition".

The book documents the pivotal events that led to the outbreak of war in Spain in 1936 and the role of Juan March, a tobacco king, in funding and making Francisco Franco the military leader. It's like being in the heart of the war in Spain as the book progresses. Franco's forces are soundly beaten, but then Mussolini intervenes, with 18 bombers flown to Spanish Morocco, and Hitler intervenes, with planes of the German Condor Legion flown to General Mola in the north of Spain. Spain was left isolated, unable to defend itself, as the French government refused to intervene because war would weaken its social reform program, and Britain and France refused to sell arms to Spain to defend itself against Italian and German aggression. "The ruling classes of Europe had picked Franco as their man, and they meant to put him in." In the USA the Hearst newspapers were against the elected Spanish government and claimed that nuns were being soaked in oil and burned there by its "Red" government. Under pressure from Catholic vested interests, the Roosevelt administration also refused to sell arms to Spain to defend itself against the Fascist forces.

With ongoing help from Germany and Italy, the book reveals how Spanish democracy was bombed out of existence and of how Franco engaged in mass slaughter of civilians. The book explores the Catholic justification for killing in that it was considered not a serious matter for if they were good Catholics those slaughtered went to "an abode of bliss", but if they were bad Catholics, "then to kill them was the noblest of actions, because every day they lived they would be undermining and destroying the faith of other souls, whereas whey they were dead and sent to hell they could no longer do any harm." Franco is portrayed as someone who "killed to restore Holy Mother Church to her power in Spain, so that everybody might be compelled to come back into her bosom and the teaching of atheist doctrines might cease for ever." But the secular arm of the army had to do the killing as "Holy Mother Church never killed anybody". The book reveals how Franco employed Moors to slaughter Spanish civilians and have their way with Spanish women as they chose. In due course, Mussolini's Italian blackshirts flooded into Spain. Spain was to revert to a medieval state, with the priests and landlords firmly in control.

    IDEOLOGY IS NEVER THE SOLUTION
    By Tionesta
As I am throughout all those years on my third re-read of the Lanny Budd series (thanks to KINDLE), I am finding how much I've changed. This time I did not like "WIDE IS THE GATE" that much. Especially Lanny's sojourn to Spain and his fascination with the "pink/red" color of his pre-WW2 politics. There, Mr Sinclair's prose is often slow and construed; the ideology is naïve. Calling Hitler a "Bohemian," either because of his nationality or his life-style, is erroneous. Moreover, with a 20/20 hindsight, looking for answers in Socialism and Communism is as faulty as seeking enlightenment in Fascism. Watching documentaries about Adolf, and I have seen many of them, convinced me Adolf was a certified nut in a serious need of L/T institutional treatment or, even better, lobotomy. Hitler was as bad Messiah as was Stalin. I never could understand why these two perfidious bastards were not on it (WW2) together instead of each other's throats. They were so much alike. Nevertheless, thank God for that. And The Godfather was right: "They shoulda stopped Hitler at Munich, they should never let him get away with that, they were just asking for big trouble when they let him get away with that... If the Families had been running the State Department there would never have been World War II."
