The loss of a "nuclear" bomb off Puerto Rico during WWII brings strange consequences in this overwrought exploration of a stressed community in Washington State decades later. Twenty-six-year-old Maria de la Via, visiting her Aunt JoAnne, quickly discovers that neighbor Molly McCain is a whole lot worse than unpleasant. A long-standing spat over property rights threatens to escalate into a fight involving all of Concrete, Wash., as animal deaths and the dumping of toxic materials raise suspicions about long-buried secrets. This timely theme is hampered by wooden dialogue and minimal character development: Molly is presented as evil incarnate, and Maria's search for answers predictably finds a parallel in a developing romance. Rolnick's overriding message is that acquiescing to evil and bullying immerses individuals and community in a circle of lies; her heavy-handed, frequently bombastic dialogue reduces most of her characters to uninteresting stick fixtures. A less rigid delineation of good and evil might have given more focus to this examination of a community struggling to throw off its passivity in the face of an emergency.

.In Color of Lies Abbe Rolnick creates an antagonist so despicable and repellent that interest in any redemptive qualities keep the reader intrigued and involved in the novel all the way from beginning to end. Molly McCain is a villain as mean and venal as Hannibal Lecter but nowhere near as attractive or lovable as Anthony Hopkins. Power is something that Molly McCain craves and she will destroy anything standing in her way to get it: her family, her neighbors, and the environment. With great skill Rolnick deftly moves back and forth through multiple points of view. An enjoyable read, a good mystery, a great message and lesson to be learned. Color of Lies is a story of aviation, history, and the interconnectedness of people. It's also an effective environmental "why do it" in contrast to the usual mystery "who dunnit." Rolnick succeeds in pulling all these themes together with a tight plot that keeps the action moving forward to the ultimate denouement. Author Q&A How do you create a character so the reader connects? I watch people around me and keep small habits in my head. I notice when someone walks into my restaurant how their feet hit the floor, if they have an easy smile, or if their hands shake. Since I work with the public and have a family, I see with my heart. I believe that each person is complex, and I want my characters to reflect that complexity. Often I combine traits of individuals from my varied past. Having lived in different cultures, I have felt like the odd one out. My perspective changes as I become the foreigner, the person who can't communicate. I wanted to be an actress as a child. Now I become the characters. What inspired you to tell this story? How much is based on research versus experience? Color of Lies started on my first date with my present husband. One of our discussions was about trust and lies. I heard myself say that there are many colors of lies, and of course I wrote those words down knowing that a story would come. Two years later I glimpsed a woman in a wheelchair, on the tarmac of the Concrete Airport. She sat so elegantly, and I wondered why she was wheelchair-bound. She became my first character and the Concrete Airport became my setting. Adding these elements to my theme of lies, I could begin developing a story. I write what I know and that can be experiences, places, or memories, but to make a story authentic I research specifics. In the case of Color of Lies, I passed three consecutive years at the annual Concrete Fly-In, observing the pilots, the planes, and those that participated. I interviewed pilots in the Civil Air Patrol and researched Women pilots in World War II. Living in Skagit Valley allowed me to hike Sauk Mountain and visit local vineyards and the old Northern State Hospital. If I am successful, the reader learns without learning, feels what I feel, and the setting and characters seem real. What secret can you reveal to the audience that is in your head about the characters, the force behind the creation that isn't stated in the book? To come up with a character like Molly McCain, you really have to twist yourself into something negative. These were my hardest chapters, and I purposely kept them short. I drew on all the people I knew with negative characteristics and tried to think and act like they would. I actually researched the psychology of a bully. If you go through the book you will see that Molly's chapters are few and far between. Her ugliness can wear you down. I would have to run for an hour or work in the garden to bring myself back to center. What are you working on now? I have another novel just beginning to take shape. I have the theme, one that actually overwhelms me causing my knees to shake: What defines us? I know the story will take place in SkagitValley, and that one or two characters from my previous books, River of Angels and Color of Lies, will reappear. My research is more with rocks and stones, using the parallel idea of what defines the earth. I just got back from an across country trek, looking at the geology of the Great Plains. While I'm developing a story with full characters, I'd like to publish a collection of my short stories.

Engaging story

This story was very engaging and I could not put it down until I finished it. I enjoyed all of the characters (good and evil) and especially enjoyed the scenic references as I am a PNW resident. This author is really on her way with her second book and I am looking forward to reading her next one. Congratulations.
