When Artemio Battaglia joins the Regia Aeronautica to become a fighter pilot at the beginning of World War II, he's inspired by the romanticized patriotism of the Fascists. His idealism is shattered when he witnesses atrocities committed against indigenous populations in North Africa, and the officials he informs do nothing to stop the murderers. Their response is to transfer him to the most dangerous front in the war. A disillusioned Artemio returns to Piacenza to find his city occupied by ruthless German soldiers. He enlists in the war again, this time as a member of the Red Brigades. With a renewed sense of purpose, Artemio repeatedly places himself in peril, sabotaging German supply lines and giving aid to the Allies. But when his comrades capture a downed Italian pilot and schedule a hasty execution, Artemio recoils at the senseless violence. Once again, he is called to act in accordance with his conscience and embarks on a bold plan to set things right.

Review
Based on the actual World War II experience of the author's great uncle, a pilot in the Regia Aeronautica, Heaven Cries conveys the disillusionment, anguish, and indomitable spirit of people betrayed first by their elected leader, then by their ally. It shows with chilling realism how the desire for freedom can become a commitment to overthrow an oppressive regime. Most significantly, it reminds us of the true spring waters of freedom: hope, kindness, courage, and love.  Nicholas Gage, author of Eleni

Heaven Cries, a novel of WWII, takes the reader into an authentic portrayal of aerial warfare in North Africa and guerrilla tactics in Italy. Author Stephan Silva makes the practical and spiritual changes in the life of its protagonist, Artemio Battaglia, believable. A satisfying 5-star read. -- Donald Michael Platt, author of Close to the Sun and the Rocamora Series.

A must read for any history buff! You will find yourself transported to another time and place with the descriptions of weaponry and military tactics. This is not just a story about WWII, though. There is a much deeper purpose to the novel that explores the complexity of human motivation, behavior, beliefs, nature, and above all, hope. The protagonist is an endearing yet flawed character trying to find the things that all of us strive for in life. If you're looking for your next page turner, give Heaven Cries a try.

Italy's War
By Christina Paige
Artemio, an idealistic young man, leaves his village home and becomes a pilot, finding romance along the way with a beautiful, impulsive actress. When Italy becomes involved in World War Two , he dreams of glorious aerial battles against honorable fighter pilots, but ambition and betrayal leave him stranded in the desert, behind enemy lines. What happens next places his very soul in jeopardy. Artemio struggles to redeem himself, becoming a hero in the eyes of countrymen even as he questions the direction his country is taking.

This novel depicts the dilemma the Italian people faced in World War II. Originally, armed forces were fighting for Italy’s colonial expansion in Africa. Their integrity becomes compromised by Mussolini’s alliance with Adolph Hitler and Nazi Germany, with terrible consequences for Italians. Before long, Italy is embroiled in a war on its own soil. Ironically, the alliance with Germany makes Italy a target for the Americans and British bombers, even as German troops murder Italian citizens. Worst of all, political factions arise to fill the void of government collapse. The most brutal are the Communist partisans, who give and receive no quarter in their struggle against the Nazi presence. These irregular forces have an eye on post war Europe and wish Italy to be placed behind the Iron Curtain as a Russian satellite nation.

In the dark light of recent events, this history is particularly relevant. Heaven Cries is not simply a tale of our past: it is very much our present.

My best read for summer 2016
By Amazon Customer
This book had me bonded with the conflicted protagonist, Artemio, from the start. I, as a second generation Greek American, have relatives in Crete who lived and died through the second world war, in which young, valiant men were killed, naturally inspired into guerilla warfare or starved to death in Athens during a period of tremendous upheaval, confrontation, and deprivation. I know this because I have kept close and direct contact with my relatives there over the years.
Many good men falter in these times. “Occurrence, do not be ashamed of your appearance. A man’s true mettle is his ability to rise from the ashes like a phoenix and refashion the rubble of his spirit and body to become an even greater man than he was before.” As far as I am concerned, the Italians were a breed apart, with almost impossible choices during this complex time of nationalism, pride, but also corruption, and a doomed alliance with Germany where the bilious stories of violence of the most horrendous sort, played out under the flag of Nazism and Fascism. The human elements of conscience and redemption burst through in this debut novel, and I found myself literally weeping during certain parts, in which other readers will certainly recognize. This is the kind of writing that kept me reading from one chapter to the next. As a history buff, I found this novel both riveting and educational. The author clearly was well aware of the political, cultural, and specific aircraft and weaponry of the times, which I personally hold interest in.

Thanks, Doctor Silva, for your story, your research and your honesty about the reality of the times. This was an immensely enjoyable read.
