Blends Romance, Adventure, Drama & International Intrigue Set in Egypt Post Arab Spring.
By Bill Anderson
IN A NUTSHELL
As many, I have become a fan of the series, The Legend of the Winged Scarab. Such a fan that I purchase each book as it gets released. I finished this book today, coincidentally with the departure of my Egypt-born and raised cat, Squeaky. I love this series and am impressed by the author's knowledge of ancient and contemporary Egypt, and with her imagination and skill in crafting a romance that also is an international adventure and intrigue.
With no further ado, in case you're curious as to what I think of this, the fifth book in the Legend of the Winged Scarab.
Length: Print, 275 pages.
Target Audience/Genre: This is an Adventure-Drama, billed as Alternative History.
Q - What was the Amazon Rank on the date this review was published?
A - 484,785.
Q - How was this book obtained?
A - Purchased through Amazon.
Q - Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first?
A – Yes, but it is better appreciated after reading the previous four books in the series.
Q - Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures?
A – No.
Q - Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read?
A – The Nile Conspiracy is a leisure read.
Q - What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made?
A – Plain English. Although there is a modest amount of mature language, there are no f-bombs. I would have no qualms if this series was marketed toward the Young Adult demographic.
Q - My biggest pleasure or disappointment?
A - Despite an ever so slight awkward start, I quickly settled into an excellent yarn that actually does have one wondering if this is really not a prophetic story.
What I most loved was the writer's imagination, combined with a solid grasp of recent political developments that I could swear she lives in Egypt.
I’ve included a small excerpt below, so readers can peruse the style of presentation utilized by the author.
EXCERPT
“Who is it?”
"Khepur, the Wise One. Keeper of knowledge. Keeper of crystals. Perhaps now you can understand why I want this site to remain hidden. Archaeology is a destructive science. We discover, we dig, we exhibit; seldom do we leave things intact.”
On one level, Naunet agreed with him. On another, she was appalled the world should never know about the history of the Khepri. She kept staring up at the two faces: One so young and beautiful, the other so old; watching, guarding.
Naunet recalled the terrifying days she had been held captive on Crete by Edward, forced to translate the two golden slates he and Karakurt Tiryaki had stolen from the lab in Luxor. How elated she had been to read Ramose’s hieratic text, presumably a translation of the squares on the reverse of the tablets. And how frustrated she was about the broken-off corner of the first tablet, cutting short the saying prior to: And now, you know from where we hailed so long ago. ‘No,’ she had cried. ‘I don’t know.’
And here she stood, in front of those who held the answer. She reached up and caressed the floating mask. Then, with great reverence, she traced the outline of the old face peering out from behind Nuri’s gilded hair.
An overwhelming urge to hear their story flowed through her. She laid her hands on the stone slab. Her fingers sank into a layer of pebbles. Instinctively, she picked a handful up and rolled them in her hand. They crumbled with a crackling sound. In her open palm lay the remains of the iridescent wings of beetles. She looked closer at...

The latest in a great Egyptian action/adventure saga
By Joseph the evilcyclist
The Legend of the Winged Scarab continues in book five of the series, The Nile Conspiracy. We see the return of Jonathan, Naunet, and former "pharaoh" of the Cairo Museum Egyptian Jabari El-Masri. Several other previous characters return including a favorite of mine, Vergil, a sly and crafty character, who acts in own self-interest. In the previous books, Borg forms a story surrounding regional political events like the revolution in Egypt that overthrew Mubarak and natural events like the Khamsin and Sirocco. All the natural phenomena used in the stories are real. In a previous book the supervolcano, the Yellowstone Caldera, erupted causing a great disruption in the world order and removing the United States from position power.
In this story, Egypt is still trying to seek stability after the revolution and dealing with a major threat to its existence. Ethiopia is is constructing the Grand Renaissance Dam on the Nile which is a threat to Egypt’s water supply. Ethiopia is the source 85% of the Nile’s water of which Egypt counts on for 80% of its water needs. This provides the catalyst of the story and what draws all the characters together -- from familiar characters to Egypt’s top leadership. There is action and adventure all within the reader’s willing suspension of disbelief, much like a Clive Cussler novel.
The two storylines of protecting Egypt’s water supply and the quest for control of the fifty ancient golden tablets and their meaning also continues. Their location is known but they are simply out of reach. The story also includes some mythology going back to the first book, which took place before the Egyptian civilization. This, although adding a supernatural aspect to the book, creates a stronger tie into the story and the events.
The story is fast moving and the storylines tie in nicely. The writing is clear and pulls heavily from real events. Borg does her research well and takes the current political situation and ties it in with real or possible natural effects. Even though the writing is fiction the reader can pick up real world issues like the effects of Ethiopia building the world’s largest hydroelectric dam on the river that has been a source of life in North East Africa and center of an ancient civilization. I liked this series from the beginning. It’s smart. It makes the reader want to research aspects of the story. It is not your average cookie cutter fiction or action/adventure series; it holds your attention and has you looking into current events and history. It is a series you actually become involved in.

Loved it
By Molly Flanders
What a timely novel. Just this week I read an article in the Economist about the complexity of the sharing of the Nile between Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt. Borg has picked a hot topic for her fifth book in her series. While other authors repeat a formula in each of their books, Borg takes her characters and story to different types of adventures and genres.
This thriller flirts with the term conspiracy but is rooted deeply in reality, making it a bit political and contemporary at the same time.
The plot is intriguing. Archeologists Naunet and Jonathan Wilkins are back in Egypt where the construction of The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam stirs up some controversy, tension and danger.
Underneath the excellent and explosive plot are more profound moral and ethical questions about culture and humanity, making the book rewarding in other ways, too.
Borg's narrative is eloquent, witty and stylish; her characters are memorable and there is a great balance between ironic detachment and powerful dramatic involvement.
Maybe it is the coincidence of having read about the Nile and the Dam twice in one week or maybe it is Borg's talent. I really loved this one.
