Taylor Rule has everything any woman could want: impeccable, wealthy family, successful career, and one of the nation's most eligible bachelors for her fiancé. But she hates it all. Her family is forcing her to marry a man she doesn't love and threatening her with a loss of inheritance and career otherwise. Nothing she says to her family or fiancé can convince them to yield, so she decides to take action: she marries a man she happens upon at the airport, a man who couldn't be more opposite from her fiancé. Trevor Freeman looks like an unkempt hillbilly. He never made it to high school; he can't even read. But he's much more than he seems . . . so much more gifted and so much more dangerous. Is he the man of her dreams or of her nightmares? Dramatic yet humorous and steeped in the world of the corrupt banking elite, Fed Up follows the couple as their lark turns into something serious.

Fantastic dialogue. Humor. Invention. Market manipulation. Greed. Relationship. Revenge.
By hrslvr
I think this book is absolutely wonderful. This book is dedicated to zerohedge.com and as a huge fan of that website, it made me very excited to read further. I was not disappointed. The facts in this book read like a history novel but we are living the history now. The Fed is printing umpteen billions to pay debt and we learn what that has done and is doing to the economy. Read about greed, corruption, power, market manipulation, etc. but thrown into the mix is the relationship between Trevor and Taylor. These two are polar opposites.

While both are extremely intelligent, Trevor is dyslexic so therefore cannot read and Taylor has a hard time imagining that he has done anything useful with his life let alone invented something. Add to that his hippy-like appearance and we can see Taylor's point. Although we find that he is extremely well-versed and quick witted. I love his humor! He is hiding something from his past so it keeps the reader in suspense as to what that might be.

Taylor is in a crappy relationship and is under pressure from her parents to tie the knot with this man but she is none too thrilled with his extracurricular activities. Trevor turns out to be a valuable weapon for Taylor to bring home! That is one great story too! Taylor, however, does something to Trevor that saddens him deeply so we have a revenge component as well.

I love novels like this that go back and forth from one scene to the next then back again. It leaves me wondering what is going to happen next! Also in there are the horrors of ebola and supplying clean water to poor countries. So, a book chock full of great dialogue, humor, a history of sorts of what is going on in the world today.

Lots of finicial jar-goon, but still a good read.
By Big D
The book has an awful lot of financial jar-goon...I almost put it down several times...giving up on it. But, I kept wading through it. As it turns out many of the financial things they describe in the book...which I thought were fiction turn out to be true. That is one of the scary things in the book.

gritty, pushy, and effortful — but not a total waste of time
By Kae Bender - Editor and Writer
I got Fed Up because it was billed as a comedy romance, and I wanted something light. For better anticipation, I should have looked into it further than the blurb.

Humor is in the mind of the reader, and mine got fed up pretty quickly as the reparte seemed more bitchy comebacks and pottymouth nastiness than ever funny.

Romance takes more than formulaic blocks to the couple uniting to make it seem like the couple might actually want to end up together; the extreme viciousness of some of the choices the woman makes seem more alienating than great sex could compensate, and her character, maternal family, and ex-fiance seem unsympathetically unredeemable.

Lightness generally makes for easy reading. Economic debates in this novel are often more like treatises and diatribes than clever observations, and both the brutal backstory and the third world realities described read more like alternative reporting site coverage of disastrous situations than escapist getaways. And sadly, the fictitious saving technologies seem too ephemerally described to have any suspension-of-disbelief viability.

All that said, the story hangs together in a frustrating logic. While I found the anti-greed treatises, need for police transparency, and third world water and electricity deficiencies worthwhile advocacy points, in the end, none is truly supported by the perhaps-realistic but hauntingly greed-driven conclusion.

I’d call it gritty, pushy, and effortful — but not a total waste of time.

  • The Phantom of the Opera is a novel by French writer Gaston Leroux. It was first published as a serialisation in Le Gaulois from September 23, 1909, to January 8, 1910. It was published in volume form in April 1910 by Pierre Lafitte. The novel is partly inspired by historical events at the Paris Opera during the nineteenth century and an apocryphal tale concerning the use of a former ballet pupil's skeleton in Carl Maria von Weber's 1841 production of Der Freischütz. Nowadays, it is overshadowed by the success of its various stage and film adaptations. The most notable of these are the 1925 film depiction featuring Lon Chaney and Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical.

    The original Phantom
    By Alysson Oliveira
Before the Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical, there was Gaston Leroux's original novel "The Phantom of the Opera". I have never seen the production stage, and I knew only a few things of the story, so when I reached the middle of the narrative I was surprised because it is totally different from what I expected. And it was a great surprise.

More than a love story, "The Phantom of the Opera" is a gothic tale of obsession --leading to madness. The Paris Opera House and its hidden rooms, and underground are perfect place to develop a horror story. Leroux noticed this potential. His descriptions of the place are creepy and in the end we start wondering if it is not a true story indeed.

Leroux was very smart, writing a novel like he was only reporting something --and not creating a work of fiction. Therefore there are police reports, newspapers' scraps, witness interviews. More than a narrator, the person who is telling the story is only gathering useful information for the reader.

His characters are real human beings --even the `ghost', than throughout the narrative we realize that he is the one with most human characteristics. Sometimes, Christine is a little stereotypical, mostly when she says she wants to be `the mistress of her faith' or something like it. And so is Raoul --but that doesn't diminish the qualities of this engaging novel.

All in all, this is a French classic that I highly recommend --however one must be patient because the narrative is a little confusing and slow sometimes, but never boring.

    No one sees the angel
    By EA Solinas
The mask, the music, the dark mysteries, and the tortured, deformed genius who just wants love. "The Phantom of the Opera" is so well known that its story needs no explanation.

But Gaston Leroux's novel is still a spellbinding experience, full of atmospheric horror, a sense of gothic mystery, and lushly evocative language. But its crown jewel is Erik: a magnificently tortured anti-hero who inspires more horror, pity and sympathy than the rather flat hero and heroine.

The Paris opera house is said to be haunted by a ghost with a "death's head," who demands a small salary and a reserved box. Despite the sightings and fears of ballerinas and stagehands, the new managers are determined to stamp out this ridiculous story -- despite threatening letters and increasing accidents that happen around them.

Meanwhile, budding diva Christine Daae is taking Paris by storm, although nobody quite knows who taught her how to sing. And when her childhood friend Viscount Raoul de Chagny pays her a visit, he hears a passionate exchange between her and a man -- but there's no man there. She credits her new vocal abilities to the Angel of Music, but of course, that self-same Angel is the opera ghost.

As the Phantom becomes even more attached to Christine, Raoul soon finds that the ghost is actually a half-mad, horribly deformed musical genius named Erik -- and that after Christine saw his true face, he made her become engaged to him. The young lovers plan to run away together, but the "Angel of Music" isn't about to allow his beloved Christine to leave him...

Apparently there actually were some odd events -- including rumours of an opera ghost -- happening when Gaston Leroux began writing "The Phantom of the Opera." And it's a credit to his imgination that he was able to spin a some odd facts into a harrowing, heartbreaking love triangle that's based on music, obsession, adoration, and a bit of pity. And, of course, a frighteningly sympathetic "villain."

Admittedly the style is very "penny dreadful": melodramatic and overloaded on prose. But Leroux's talent shines through -- he drapes the book in a haunted atmosphere, full of snowy graveyards, dark opera backstages and underground labyrinths, all with Erik's presence hovering over it. The plot is mostly a slow, satiny procession toward the inevitable blowup, but Leroux does tinge it with scenes of romantic drama, a feeling of dread, one shocking action scene, and even some quirky humour at times.

And Leroux's writing is simply astounding as he describes the corpselike appearance of Erik ("... tore his terrible dead flesh with my nails") and his "death's" head appearance at the party. But he also excels at the more poignant moments -- Erik's final, rambling monologue to Christine after she kisses him is heartbreakingly clumsy and saddening.

Though Christine and Raoul are the hero and heroine of the book, they're actually kind of flat. Erik is the real star -- an arrogant genius who is also pitifully lonely. And insane. Despite his crazed behavior -- which results in at least two deaths -- it's hard not to feel sympathy for someone cursed with such a ghastly appearance, and so starved for human contact that a single kiss changes his life ("... he tried to catch my eye, like a dog sitting by its master").

Despite being a bit overblown in the style of its time, "The Phantom of the Opera" is a triumph of atmosphere, horror, and one of the most memorably sympathetic "villains" that you can find on the shelves. Magnificent.

    An Essential for any Phan...
    By JR Pinto
This is the third translation of Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera that I have purchased, and I don't regret it. Most of us are familiar with the "official" translation - the one that is the tie-in for the musical (and countless other editions). Leonard Wolf gives us a newer and - as he feels - more faithful interpretation of the French text. (Sidenote: In the tie-in translation, the Phantom never refers to himself as the Phantom: only as the Opera Ghost, or O.G. In this version, he is always the more musical Phantom of the Opera.)

If you have not read Phantom yet, you may be a bit distracted by the voluminous footnotes. For the familiar reader however, the footnotes are the main reason to buy this edition. Wolf provides valuable insight into many areas of the text. He points out inconsistencies: Raoul goes from being 21 to 20. He provides commentary on the mythological allusions in the text.

Most valuable, he provides artistic commentary on the book. He shows how Phantom fits into Gothic conventions: the damsel-in-distress being menaced by a sexually threatening outsider, only to be rescued by a non-sexual aristocrat. But it is not quite that simple; Wolf shows that there are only two protagonists in the piece: Christine and Erik. He rightly shows Raoul for the foolish little sap that he is. He thinks that Leroux intended it to be that way, and that Christine has a much stronger bond with Erik than she does Raoul.

On the whole, I wish Wolf had written more. How about interpretive essays on the various adaptations, including the Lloyd Weber musical? He does include a lengthy introduction about the novel and Gaston Leroux himself. This volume is a must-have for any Phantom-enthusiast.

Peeping into the soul of a man
    By Buenoslibros.es
Translation by Rex Warner (in Signet Classics)

This one is a very good translation, especially for the modern reader. It conveys the immediacy and vividness of a text written more than 1500 years ago. One feels almost as a voyeur peeping into the private confession of a man to his God. The honesty and unembarrassed disclosure of his sins, and fruitless search for worldly wisdom, is something we can personally identify with, even today. It is amazing how vivid the description of life in late 4th century is in this Confessions. What a wonderful way to approach History, places like Carthage, Rome or Milan, thru the eyes of a skilled and intelligent man who pours his heart on these pages for us to benefit from.

St. Augustine's life, however distant in time, is filled with events, desires, and troubles, as common today as in the year 400. We can identify fully with him, and in his longing and weakness we can see our own soul portrayed. He talks about his childhood, his family, his studies and his lifelong pursuit of wisdom and truth, specially since the age of 19. We get immersed in the daily life of people in the 4th Century under the Roman Empire, their daily worries, their intellectual debates, their religious confrontations. We see the social conditions of all classes of people, from the wealthy and idle to the slaves who fight in the Circus. We see people living, talking, traveling, dreaming, and going about their business as if we were present with them. No wonder this book is an authentic classic, one that I should have read long ago.

There are many reasons to read this book. Those interested in History are certainly going to find plenty of information from eye-witness perspective; those who like to read personal memories and autobiographies won't have it easy to find a better one. For those interested in the history of religion and Catholicism, this is a must, a landmark in Christian literature. Whatever you are looking for, this book is certainly one that will satisfy your intellectual curiosity as well as fill you spiritually.

One thing to bear in mind is that the Confessions are not addressed to us, readers, that is why certain things about the author's behavior seem inexplicable: certain things that would seem to us to merit more explaining, being only mentioned briefly (his behavior toward the woman he had a child with, for example), while other issues are given a lot more space. Of course the Lord knew his heart well, but still, one is intrigued at this man.

    Only an abridgement
    By A Reader
Like the Carolinne White translation of the "Confessions," also carried by Amazon, this paperback does not have the complete original text. Rather, some of the ideas have been selected out by someone and are here rephrased into more contemporary language. That's OK, but anyone buying this book ought to know that this version is an abridgement and not the full text of the "Confessions" that they're buying.

    Uplifting
    By Jeffrey Leach
St. Augustine is one of the greatest thinkers the West ever produced. Born in North Africa in the waning years of the Roman Empire, his Confessions detail his ultimate conversion to Nicene Christianity after a ten year journey through the various trendy sects of the 4th century C.E. Augustine was a member of the Manichean heresy, a follower of Astrology, and an all around sinner. He enjoyed the barbaric games of the coliseum, was overly proud of his education and teaching positions, and just couldn't bring himself to give up the ladies. He even had a son, Adeodatus, who was born out of wedlock. In short, Augustine loved the things that most people love, and he loved the same things that we love in our decadent age. This is what makes this book so relevant today; it shows how little the human race has come in 1500 years. Augustine's struggles are our struggles.
Two points of interest are worth mentioning here. The first is Augustine's mother, St. Monica. Throughout the book, Monica is an omnipresent figure in Augustine's life. She is a tireless Christian, and she does many things to try and bring Augustine into the faith. She prays incessantly, has visions and dreams from God that promise Augustine's conversion, and she follows her son everywhere he goes. Augustine gives much praise to his mother, but it's important to remember that he was writing this account after his conversion. At the time, Augustine must have been sick to death of some of her antics. He actually lied to her so he could sneak off to Rome without her, although she was soon on a boat so she could catch up with him. I also felt sorry for his father, Patricius. Dad wasn't really into the Christian thing, so Monica put on the pants in the family. Augustine even says that Monica made God the 'true' father in their house.
A second point of interest is Augustine's actual conversion. He seems to go through two of them in quick succession. The first is an intellectual conversion, as Augustine uses the texts of Neo-Platonic authors to prove to himself the fallacy of the Manichean theology. It seems the Manicheans believed in a Christ figure that was not fully divine, as well as the idea that God was a substance. Augustine shows how substance can be corrupted, making this idea totally incompatible with the idea of a perfect God. After all, if a substance can be corrupted, how can it be perfect? After the intellectual conversion, Augustine still can't totally believe because he can't give up the fleshly sin of lust with women. This second conversion finally comes about in the famous 'pick it up and read' incident in the garden. Augustine, wracked by his sins and on the verge of some type of mental collapse over his anguish, hears a child's voice singing, 'Pick it up and read.' Seeing this as a sign from God, he picks up Paul's Epistles and reads the first thing he sees in the book. He reads a passage about the evils of fleshly vice and his conversion is complete.
After this conversion, the rest of the book veers off on a tangent. Augustine examines the concept of time, in great detail, and writes an incredibly dense exegesis on the first parts of the book of Genesis. This section, with the exception of his discourse on time, isn't nearly as interesting as the account of his life and the fundamental changes he goes through as he tries to find the true way to live life. I do suspect that thousands have converted after reading this book because it speaks to every human on a fundamental level. The above description I've given doesn't even begin to cover the amount of information in this book. The Confessions is both beautiful and thought provoking and I would recommend it to anyone.
I do have a word of warning for those who are considering giving this one a shot. Avoid, like the plague, the John Ryan translation. It is wordy, dense, and not at all clear. Read this Penguin version, written by Mr. Pine-Coffin (great name, huh?). It is a clear and concise translation. It's one thing to struggle with ideas in a book, but why should we have to struggle with the syntax? Go forth and read, young man!

Manhunt Gone Wrong, by K.T. D'Angelo

Their childhood tradition of manhunt had to happen one last time before these twelve friends went their separate ways for college. And that is why this final game had to be monumental- brand new place, same old rules. This was going to be a game to remember.
Actually, let's go back and clarify that a bit. Friends probably isn't the most appropriate term. It's more like a hodgepodge of individuals comprising of some jocks, a few tree-hugging hippies, a couple of academic nerds, and probably one or two drug-induced individuals. Most of their childhood, it seemed inevitable something would go terribly wrong, as personalities continually clashed. Yet everyone always managed to get along, or at least not kill each other, but that's something, right?
Then on the night of August 23, everything changed, because that is the night their historic, final game of manhunt turned real. One friend decided to take matters into their own hands, murdering those that showed any indication they were aware of the person's soiled past. This was their last chance to clear their dirty tracks before everyone split for college.
Through the eyes of Florenza Goldberg, a recent high-school graduate about to embark on her new adventure at Red Valley Community College, it is clear nothing like this has been done before. She was already confused about nearly every aspect of her life, and that was before the game that would transform her future.
With clues placed at every dead body, it is up to Florenza to solve the mystery of this deadly mess. She must overcome her stubborn spirit in order to mend some impaired friendships to save herself and her friends before they don't survive to see college.
    So essentially, everyone is screwed.

Rarely do I find a book that draws me in from the first page but this book was captivating and intrigued me from page one. I couldn't put it down. As the story unfolded there were twists and turns which made me want to jump to the end to find out the truth but I'm glad I didn't because I would have missed so much of the well thought out plot!

The Last Weekend, by Nick Mamatas

Vasilis "Billy" Kostopolos is a Bay Area Rust Belt refugee, failed sci-fi writer, successful barfly and, since the exceptionally American zombie apocalypse, an accomplished "driller" of reanimated corpses. There aren't many sane, well-adjusted human beings left in San Francisco, but facing the end of the world, Billy's found his vocation trepanning the undead, peddling his one and only published short story, and drinking himself to death. Things don't stay static for long. Billy discovers that both his girlfriends turn out to be homicidal revolutionaries. He collides with a gang of Berkeley scientists gone berserker. Finally, the long-awaited "Big One" shakes the foundation of San Francisco to its core, and the crumbled remains of City Hall can no longer hide the awful secret lurking deep in the basement. Can Billy unearth the truth behind America's demise and San Francisco's survival—and will he destroy what little's left of it in the process? Is he legend, the last man, or just another sucker on the vine? Nick Mamatas takes a high-powered drill to the lurching, groaning conventions of zombie dystopias and conspiracy thrillers, sparing no cliché about tortured artists, alcoholic "genius," noir action heroes, survivalist dogma, or starry-eyed California dreaming. Starting in booze-soaked but very clear-eyed cynicism and ending in gloriously uncozy catastrophe, The Last Weekend is merciless, uncomfortably perceptive, and bleakly hilarious.

    From Publishers Weekly
Mamatas's wisecracking philosophical undead opus vivisects genre stereotypes and moral preconceptions with viciousness and style. Failed writer Vasilis, a driller for the infected city of San Francisco, battles a cultural and literal wasteland of reanimated dead folks and "social isolates, the outsiders the third-shifters" in a literary slap to the American Dream. Encountering mentally ill zombies, grieving clients, and renegade scientists, Vasilis struggles to retain his life and sanity as he becomes involved with sex-craving Yvette and revolutionary hothead Alexa. The living soon prove far more dangerous than the dead, and hearts rot as easily as reanimated flesh as he investigates the secret political mechanisms of his city. This cocktail of cynicism, sex, and sadism reinforces splatter theatrics with glimpses into human cruelty, ignorance, and general pathos. The "us against them" and "us against us" motifs are familiar, but the focused intimacy and sustainable dark humor will delight both zombie fans and readers looking for some moral questioning and emotional substance. Agent: Alec Shane, Writers House. (Jan.)

    Review
"If you're looking for something that's different from your everyday zombie gorefest, if you want a zombie novel with actual brains, and a mouth that cannot be silenced, try The Last Weekend. It's killer."
    —Strange Horizons

“In The Last Weekend, it is the shades of Charles Bukowski, Henry Miller, John Fante and other hard-drinking scribblers who haunt the pages. ... Mamatas finds new life in the old apocalyptic cliches, and even this late in the zombie craze, he manages to deliver a highly caustic and entertaining end-of-the-world satire.”
    —San Francisco Chronicle

“Nick Mamatas crafts a clever blend of multiple genres that is equal parts heartfelt, fearful, and funny. The Last Weekend is a headshot to a tiresome trope. I loved it!”
—Brian Keene, author of The Rising and The Last Zombie

“Mamatas's wisecracking philosophical undead opus vivisects genre stereotypes and moral preconceptions with viciousness and style . . . focused intimacy and sustainable dark humor will delight both zombie fans and readers looking for some moral questioning and emotional substance.”
    —Publishers Weekly

“Mamatas is adept at creating menacing scenarios that induce cognitive dissonance, i.e., “Do I laugh here, cringe, or both?” An unusual effect; one I admire.”

Not the zombie novel you think it is...
    By marcfitch
This book does not fit neatly into any genre category even though, technically, it is a zombie novel. This reads more like; what if all the rejected and dejected of the world were left fend for themselves in a United States that has collapsed? The characters are exactly that, the rejects of the world, the ones who were not popular or fully integrated into society. They survived precisely because of that fact but now, left roaming the city of San Francisco with no government and everything a shell of its former self, their competing psychoses work to either make things a little better or a little worse. It is is hard to define this novel, mostly because of Mamatas' tongue-in-cheek, self-referential, satire throughout the book. It is almost half literary work, half genre work, except that I'm pretty sure that the "literary" part is a bit of textual game with the reader, one in which the main character mocks his own memories while laying them out on paper. New, different, unique, and weird. There may be too many zombie novels out there but some of them still have something to say.

Is this the right zombie novel for you?
    By Amazon Customer
Probably. If you're looking for a flesh filled gorefest you might want to look else where. There's some of that sure, but that's not what the book is all about. There's a literary element at play that transcends the genre, a zombie story that's not really about zombies at all. There's a certain lucid-daydream quality that added depth for me as a reader. The intrepid Billy Kostopolos felt real to me. I liked him and didn't like him, but I believed him. When I was a kid I used to think of the "literature" crammed down my throat at school, you know, the "Separate Peace's" and what not, as bad genre writing, because it just wasn't interesting, and that's the thing about Nick Mamatas as a writer, he writes genre that reads as interesting "literature" to me. If they taught something like The Last Weekend, Under My Roof or Move Under Ground at school when I was young I'd have better reading habits today, I know it. If someone were to say "Pitch me The Last Weekend, right now, Go!" I'd say, "Easton Ellis meets Romero without the cocaine." or maybe, "Jarmuschian, but better". Regardless, if you're still reading this noise you should be buying the book already, its good. Real good.

Filled with interesting characters, even incidental characters, like a typewriter salesman, are fully fleshed out
    By Frank Errington
Despite having the word "Zombies" in the title this novel is far from your typical zombie fare. If you're looking for a brain munching gore-fest, you may want to look elsewhere.

On the other hand, if you're familiar with the Billy Wilder directed film-noir, The Lost Weekend, based o n Charles R. Jackson's 1944 novel of the same name about an alcoholic writer, then you're in for a real treat.

It is within this context that The Last Weekend: A Novel of Zombies, Booze, and Power Tools is a great success.

In post apocalyptic San Francisco, Vasilis “Billy” Kostopolos, failed writer and accomplished barfly, finds work as a "driller" for the city. It's his job to respond to calls to find the newly dead and destroy the brain before they can reanimate. There's a great line in his interview for the job where one of the interviewers asks his current occupation. When Billy responds with writer, the second interviewer tells the first to put down "unemployed."

Mamatas fills this story with interesting characters, top to bottom, even incidental characters, like a typewriter salesman, are fully fleshed out.

The Last Weekend: A Novel of Zombies, Booze, and Power Tools is a solid literary work on the life a "writer" after the onset of the zombie apocalypse.

First published in March of 2014 by PS Publishing, The Last Weekend: A Novel of Zombies, Booze, and Power Tools is now available in Hardback, Paperback, and e-book formats from Night Shade Books.

The Fall brought mankind to its knees. After the world war, anarchy reigned across what was once the United States of America. For nine years William has lived a quiet life in the West. Lamar Valley in Yellowstone is wild and beautiful, home to wolves, bison, and bears. In a log cabin on the shore of the Lamar River, William has raised his children.

When Tarantula spreads farther north, the tenuous peace between territories is threatened. Gideon, a man who believes himself to be a prophet of God, triggers a war. William is propelled into battle again, fighting for his own life and the lives of those he loves the most. As events spiral out of control, Gideon's madness threatens to consume the world. From frozen mountain passes to the high desert, William will battle his own demons and an insidious evil he cannot understand. How can light defeat darkness when the darkness comes from within?

Children of Wrath is a tale of faith, loss, hope, and war in a smashed America.

the author portrays the struggle of good against evil in a time after World War III ...

    TWO THUMBS UP!

Sean T. Smith's CHILDREN OF WRATH is a significant novel for our time. With intelligence and sensitivity, the author portrays the struggle of good against evil in a time after World War III in a place that was America. There are surprises! I kept turning the pages.

The main character, William Fox, exudes strength and compassion; he is a leader of men, the protector of family, a pursuer of God and Truth. Somewhat, he reminds me of Wm. Paul Young's character Mack in THE SHACK as both characters struggle with the blood and anguish of evil that assaults their own families.

Smith has created a complex antagonist, Gideon, who uses his charisma and cleverness to deceive many and destroy much. Gideon has no more good in him that Shakespeare's Iago. Yet, hope is never eradicated.

" ... a vivid portrait of a shattered American west"
    By Jamie Mason
I had occasion to review OBJECTS OF WRATH, the first volume of Sean T. Smith's WRATH trilogy, at some length on my blog last year. To say I loved the novel would be an understatement. So when Sean offered me a review copy of the sequel, I jumped at the chance to continue the adventure.

The world of the WRATH novels is not your typical, one-dimensional post-apocalyptic landscape. Even in the first volume, we glimpsed how complex and nuanced the world after the Fall could become. CHILDREN OF WRATH ups the ante by drawing a vivid portrait of a shattered American west. William Fox, the protagonist of OBJECTS OF WRATH, has settled with his family in the hinterlands of Wyoming. But trouble is brewing. As if escaped tigers prowling the American winter aren't bad enough, tremors of war reach William and his family as a provisional government in Jackson Hole faces a crisis. Impelled by the sense of duty instilled in him by the Colonel (William's grandfather, whose title he has inherited), Fox is drawn into a terrible and complex struggle for dominance between the regional authority and a rising force of apocalyptic zealots led by a brilliant and psychopathic leader named Gideon.

It was such a pleasure to return to the WRATH universe. We see some old friends including Hawk the chopper pilot (my personal favorite) who has since risen to become head of the armed forces in the new government. When peace talks go awry between Gideon and the leadership in Wyoming, the zealots exact a price in blood from William's own family -- a terrible and moving loss that impacts the reader like a kick in the face. William's family is shattered forever. But wrath breeds wrath. “Gideon says he knew Jesus,” William rages, choking on hatred and bile. “But even God can't save him from me.”

Interwoven into this -- as in many of Sean's novels -- are both allusions and direct references to Christian scripture. Even non-Christians like myself appreciate the depth this provides to what would otherwise by a first-class military adventure novel. But Sean doesn't just write characters -- he writes fully-fleshed, striving, suffering, angry, joyous people for whom the reader cannot feel anything but deep compassion. A military strike on Gideon's compound (the Mormon Tabernacle, no less), complete with helicopter gunships and fighter jets roaring overhead is awesome enough. But when characters in such circumstances also grapple with questions of self-doubt, family, faith and future -- and must overcome the terrible losses exacted by an unforgiving land -- the result is a stunning, deeply moving adventure.

At one point during the conflict called Grace's War that opens Part Two of the novel, we find this extraordinary passage: "Perhaps my faith in God was restored because of Crystal, finding love and acceptance in another broken person, and therefore being able to receive and accept God's love. There was a kind of synergy then that led to healing. Even so, I would wake up screaming in the middle of the night, haunted and hunted by the past. Images seared into my brain, things I wished I could forget, would rise unbidden and angry. And that was during the good years, the season of harvest and gentle sunshine sprinkled with laughing children."

The quality of the prose speaks for itself. CHILDREN OF WRATH is a skilfully-wrought, thought-provoking and stirring adventure that will make your pulse pound and your heart race. William's journey in faith restores a faith of our own: in good story-telling. Buy this book, and anything else by Sean you can lay your hands on. He is a great writer - a true American original, and a man I personally consider the Louis L'Amour of post-apocalyptic fiction.

fantastic book and I can’t wait for the next one
    By The Bookie Monster
I think we all shudder a little bit at the constant parade of sequels, prequels, and reboots that have taken over Hollywood in recent years. For me, I think it’s because these endeavors often feel like tired regurgitations of the original or sloppy love letters to what made the genre good in the first place. When done right, however, when those tropes are subverted or so perfectly reinvented, it feels like you’re discovering a long lost third act to a story you thought you’d finished. In its own way, Children of Wrath provides the next chapter to a series that reinvigorated the post-World War 3 fiction genre for me.

The story picks up a little while after the events of the first book with William Fox living the quite life of a family man in Utah. Naturally, such quiet does not last and William finds himself pitted against a religious zealot bent on revenge for a perceived slight against him. Tension soon explodes as William is reluctantly thrust back into an effort to prevent further destruction in an already broken world.
I made no secret about how much I liked Objects of Wrath when I reviewed it for The Bookie Monster, and I’m happy to say that this book is just as pleasurable as the first. It’s another dose of nostalgia for the grand set piece Post-A action fiction of yesteryear, but skillfully updated for the modern reader.

As is typical for Permuted Press, the editing is good and like the first book, the writing is great. Action sequences are both grand and tense at the same time and Smith mixes large battles with small unit firefights as well. The verbiage never grows repetitive or cliche and the action is hardly the only thing going for this book. The moments of quiet where William reflects on topics as diverse as nature, family, religion, and evil are skillfully managed with only one or two times where these musings felt less than natural. For such large, all-encompassing topics though, Smith almost completely avoids the artificial arguments often used to drive a point home. His construction of dialogue continues to be good, and his knowledge and use of information about military equipment (often an important component of this genre) has grown since the first book. The only thing that some reader might notice is that this story is more about William with less focus on some of the secondary characters than the first book. This is not an issue or handled poorly, just a change.

My complaints are few. One thing that I enjoyed about the first book was how there was a good sense of what was going on around the US. That is slightly less so in this book, though with good reason – with the breakdown of mass communication, I suppose that would have to be expected. All the same I would have enjoyed a little more about what was going on in the rest of the country and world. Some might find the religious aspects of the book a little imposing, but as someone who is not particularly religious they did not bother me personally. To his credit, Smith uses them more to define William than engulf him. He is clearly a product of his upbringing, but he is not defined by it.

In the end, it’s a fantastic book and I can’t wait for the next one.

I don't normally like fantasy. At all
    By TheBookPrincess
I don't normally like fantasy. At all. But I was pleasantly surprised to find this book changed my opinion on the matter. Filled with strong, vibrant characters, as well as mythology and an intense aura of mystery, The Druid's Spear is a fast-paced adventure that will leave you wanting more once you reach the end. And thank goodness this is book one, because there is more ahead for Ken and Rin, I can feel it:)

    An engrossing read
    By Sarah Knudtson
An ancient evil has awakened from deep in the ocean. And it is coming for him.

Freshly bereaved Kenzo never asked for all this. He just wanted to live his life as a normal human businessman. Then, as he is mourning the loss of his only family, he is brutally attacked by a strange and terrifying creature. Its preternatural power nearly sends him to his own grave, but he escapes half alive to be rescued by a group of cave-dwelling strangers. They take him to their cavern home and their leader, the Elder, who tells Ken that he is not who he thought he was.

A mysterious talisman of unknown power. A dragon man. A treacherous spy. A stubborn, beautiful warrior woman who talks to animals and kicks Ken's butt on a daily basis. All these burst into Ken's life as up in the sky, the planets align to form the apocalyptic Druid's Spear.

Will Ken accept his identity and his destiny? Will he be able to awaken his power and defeat the ancient enemy out for his blood? Or will the Druid's Spear spell the end for him and his newfound companions, and bring disaster upon the world?

As a big anime fan, I really enjoyed this book. I love the mythology and stories about the personified planets. The characters are likable and interesting, and there's a nice twist. Looking forward to reading the sequel!

A Promising Start to a Series
    By Jeffery A. Davis
The story riveted me to my screen. I was sucked in, shocked, surprised and then taken to weeping.

Then I finished the prologue and began chapter one.

Honestly, the author is an amazing storyteller. I love Japanese culture and it shined throughout this book. The personification of the planets was an intriguing idea and I must admit that I found humor in Pluto's resentment for being downgraded. All of the characters were well-developed and I truly cared what happened to them in the end. The story ended on a cliffhanger.

The few cons that I have to mention. While the glossary of Japanese terms in the back was useful, it might have been more appropriate to mention it in the beginning of the book. I had to guess at some of the meanings of the words and didn't realize that there was a dictionary until I'd finished. That's more of a personal note. On another note, there were some typos. Most of them could be overlooked. But some of them did distract from the story. One more read-through by a third party would probably have caught them.

All-in-all, a good beginning to a series that I will follow closely.

I was given a copy of this book for an honest review.

A collective longing for the good old days makes up a significant part of mainstream ...
    By Justin Bauer
This is a collection of loosely connected fragments set to a sci-fi backdrop where the Internet is gone without explanation, and the book explores a series of events under the influence of the commodity’s sudden absence. Without the pacifying stream of information characters are subjected to chaotic conditions and society is compromised through violence. The opportunity for social criticism is abundant, and while the collection plays with different genres it is satire that stands out to me with the most clarity. The notion of a social problem as a result of Internet addiction is a motif that the narrator wants to expose. Nichols brings us characters who specialize, “in enabling each other’s deficiencies” (121), and those deficiencies are often expressed through the exposure of our addictive tendencies, and the anxiety of distance. It is the shock of sudden change that results in the chaos of impulsive reaction.
One condition of modernity is nostalgia. A collective longing for the good old days makes up a significant part of mainstream thought. Everyone my age wants to relive the 90s for the rest of their lives. Yet the idea that, “America would be ready to actually live in that nostalgia” (28-29) is met with the social chaos of sudden change.
Our character focus shifts between chapters, so the cast is grown quickly. What makes the stories special are the moments where we return to earlier characters, and delve further into the complexities of this small world. It is this novel-like quality that lends itself to a proper rising action and resolution through the scope of loosely connected short stories. Between the satire and haunting resolutions we’re faced with social critique and the consequences of familial bonds. It is the expression of character and conclusion that reveals the great takeaway that’s built upon the foundation of the earlier chapters. While the emotional payoff is delivered with the conclusion I don’t intend to take anything away from the earlier chapters. We are offered cause and effect, action and then tragedy. Nichols delivers the complication of our human condition upon removing that, which has, “separated us from people,” (295).

If you get sucked in enough to listen to the various musical references ...
    By Michael H
No Net is the ultimate culmination of what happens when everything you know changes or disappears. The extreme fight or flight responses from the characters rival those of drug addicts going through withdrawal needing to ease their desperate cravings. It's a new take on a modern problem as society becomes less social, and shows the dark truth of the world when people are forced to look at their surroundings instead of a screen on some device.

Overall this book is very well written with incredible descriptions. If you get sucked in enough to listen to the various musical references you will have a lovely soundtrack for the end of the modern world. This is a very fun read filled with dark humor and a great example how addictions and withdrawals can bring about the worst that human nature has to offer.

Good exploration of an interesting premise
    By Jacob Stanley
I enjoyed this book, which is sort of a sci-fi black comedy. Imagine a future where people are even more dependent on the Internet than they are now. Then take the Internet away, and watch everything dissolve into chaos. That's the premise here.

The tone is mostly satirical, but at times it becomes deadly serious, moving, and even disturbing. There's lots of action and lots of violence, and everything is extremely over-the-top. The chaos can be so unrelenting at times that it is almost overwhelming, but the humor keeps you turning pages.

Nichols uses a surrealistic and absurdist tone to dissect some serious real-world questions about human nature, and emotional addiction. Are we too dependent on technology? Have we forgotten what it means to just be regular human beings and interact face to face? These are interesting questions, and the book explores them in an effective and entertaining way. But it's much more than that, and eventually the story becomes a real roller-coaster ride through all sorts of interesting emotional terrain.

Highly recommended to sci-fi fans who enjoy satire and like thought-provoking what-if scenarios.
