O Shepherd, Speak! (The Lanny Budd Novels), by Upton Sinclair

As Presidential Agent 103, Lanny Budd witnesses the collapse of the Nazis, the bombing of Hiroshima, and the Nuremberg Trials in this novel in the Pulitzer Prize–winning saga.

As a spy for President Franklin Roosevelt, Lanny Budd was able to infiltrate the inner circle of the Nazi high command and glean essential information on behalf of the Allied cause. Now, as the terrible global conflict approaches its long-awaited conclusion, the newly commissioned Captain Budd of the US Army is on hand to witness the final collapse of the Third Reich in the aftermath of the Battle of the Bulge.

The nuclear destruction of Hiroshima and Nagasaki brings World War II to an end, but not even the death of Franklin Roosevelt can release Lanny from his obligations as Presidential Agent 103. A devastated Europe needs to be rebuilt, and there is a necessary reckoning still to come in the heart of defeated Germany, where the fanatics who murdered countless millions will stand trial for their crimes.

O Shepherd, Speak! is the penultimate volume of Upton Sinclair’s Pulitzer Prize–winning dramatization of twentieth-century world history. An astonishing mix of adventure, romance, and political intrigue, the Lanny Budd Novels are a testament to the breathtaking scope of the author’s vision and his singular talents as a storyteller.

Review
Praise for the Lanny Budd Novels
“These historical novels engulfed me in the thrilling and terrible imperatives of history. . . . Sinclair’s historical acumen and his calculations about powerful institutions—government, press, corporations, oil cartels and lobbyists—remain remarkably shrewd and often prescient.” —The New York Times

“Few works of fiction are more fun to read; fewer still make history half as clear, or as human.” —Time

“When people ask me what has happened in my long lifetime, I do not refer them to the newspaper files and to the authorities, but to [Upton Sinclair’s] novels.” —George Bernard Shaw

“A great and well-balanced design . . . I think it the completest and most faithful portrait of that period that has been done or will likely be done.” —H. G. Wells

About the Author
Upton Sinclair (1878–1968) was a Pulitzer Prize–winning author, activist, and politician whose novel The Jungle (1906) led to the passage of the Federal Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act. Born into an impoverished family in Baltimore, Maryland, Sinclair entered City College of New York five days before his fourteenth birthday. He wrote dime novels and articles for pulp magazines to pay for his tuition, and continued his writing career as a graduate student at Columbia University. To research The Jungle, he spent seven weeks working undercover in Chicago’s meatpacking plants. The book received great critical and commercial success, and Sinclair used the proceeds to start a utopian community in New Jersey. In 1915, he moved to California, where he founded the state’s ACLU chapter and became an influential political figure, running for governor as the Democratic nominee in 1934. Sinclair wrote close to one hundred books during his lifetime, including Oil! (1927), the inspiration for the 2007 movie There Will Be Blood; Boston (1928), a documentary novel revolving around the Sacco and Vanzetti case; The Brass Check, a muckraking exposé of American journalism; and the eleven novels in the Pulitzer Prize–winning Lanny Budd series.

Lanny Budd ends with a thud.
By Arlo
I have greatly enjoyed the series, but this one doesn't live up to the rest. In all previous books the characters have been intelligent and thoughtful about their world and it's events, but now they just forget everything they passed through and blame war on capitalism and overpopulation. Did they think that Hitler, Alexander the Great, and Genghis Khan, were pushed into war by their capitalist masters? Was overpopulation the cause of the American Civil war or Napoleonic conflicts? No, and it lowered my enjoyment to read Sinclair forcing his characters into such propaganda instead of letting the history speak for itself.

The End of World War II and the Capitulation to Stalin
By Johns
This was to be the final book of the World's End series. It wraps things up nicely and sets the stage for the Cold War.

O Shepherd Speak sees President Roosevelt becoming worried by the actions of Joseph Stalin. The book reveals how Allied foreign policy was to avoid offending Stalin. General Patton avoids liberating Czechoslovakia, so as not to offend Stalin, for example. Harry Hopkins remains very optimistic about Stalin and visits him. Later, President Truman meets Stalin at Potsdam, and then disbands the US Army and Air Force. Regardless of any Soviet threat, soldiers wanted to return home, as there might not be enough jobs to go round and those who went home first would get the pick of the jobs.

Lanny Budd enters the Dachau concentration camp and hears some eyewitness accounts of what transpired there. Meanwhile in post-war Berlin American authorities are happy to have ex-Nazis in charge again. In Soviet East Berlin the book reports that any socialist who didn't join the Socialist Unity Party disappeared.

The book takes the reader inside Los Alamos to witness the atom bomb test. In the acknowledgments, General Leslie A. Groves is credited, "who read and checked the chapter having to do with the New Mexico bomb test."

Evidently by the time he came to write this book, Upton Sinclair no longer had any Communist sympathies. Lanny Budd spends his time trying to convince Roosevelt, and later Truman, that Stalin is motivated by the idea of world conquest.

There's more in the book too, e.g. the reader is taken inside the Battle of the Bulge, plus Herman Goring makes a memorable appearance at the Nuremberg trials, and the spirit of Henri Bergson appears at a seance to relate how "continuous creation of unforeseen novelty" occurs in the universe.

So, another solid entry in the World's End series, but slightly anti-climactic.

Historical Fiction that Sounds More Like History - A Classic
By Bill Anderson
Quick & Dirty Highlights

There is a reason Upton Sinclair won the Pulitzer for his fiction. All too infrequently in these modern times, writers will attempt to weave fact and fiction into a seamless tapestry that educates us while entertaining us.

Length: Print, 548 pages.

Target Audience/Genre: Historical Fiction.

Q - How was this book obtained?
A - Bought on Amazon.

Q - Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first?
A – Yes, but this is the tenth book in an 11-book series. I highly recommend starting with the first book in the series.

Q - Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures?
A – No.

Q - Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read?
A – This and the series are the fine wine of literature. You want to savor these stories.

Q - What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made?
A – Plain English, but a cut above the quality of English used in modern writing. Fortunately, tapping on any words my limited vocabulary can't fathom, I can quickly suss out the meaning and carry on. My point is, I admire authors who can expand my mental dictionary.

Q - What age group is this suitable for?
A - Young Adult and older.

Q - My biggest pleasure or disappointment?
A - I only wish I had started reading Upton years ago. I love the way Upton was able to describe scenes and stitch a story together that, had I not known better, had the authenticity of real life. I mean, it sounds more like history than fiction. Thoroughly plausible.

I’ve included a small excerpt below, so readers can peruse the style of presentation utilized by the author.

EXCERPT

'...Photographs in Heisenberg’s office showed an amiable and not too large person with somewhat unruly hair.

Lanny had captured the Swabian town of Urach, and now he was going to capture the Bavarian town of Urfeld. The syllable “Ur” means aged, having to do with one’s remote ancestors; it is a difference between America and Europe that on the old continent the most delightful summer resorts may have buildings and history going back five or six or more centuries. In many valleys along the northern Alpine slopes are lovely little blue lakes, and Munich is fortunate in having a score of them within easy reach. There couldn’t have been a pleasanter motor trip; only two or three shots were fired at them, and they might have taken great numbers of prisoners if they hadn’t had more important work in hand.

They traveled fast, not stopping for anything. They cut up into the foothills to avoid Munich. They had passed not far from Dachau, but had no way of knowing what had happened or might be happening there. Americans had found it difficult to believe the atrocity stories, but now that they were liberating one after another of these packed concentration camps they were horrified by the conditions they found.

XIV

They raced into the small town of Urfeld, on the Walchensee a lake three or four miles long, at the head of that River Isar which flows through Munich, and down whose clear green waters Lanny had once been floated on a great raft, in company with a score of Nazi Bonzen, a picnic party with baskets of Leberwurst sandwiches and a cask of beer. That had been in the days of “Munich”—in the special sense of the name which history will always remember. Lanny had motored through this pleasureland, enjoying the good life which fate had assigned to him.

Now he and his party came...'

Excerpt 2

[This excerpt demonstrates how Sinclair uses dialogue to convey key points]

' "...the story should be told, and I think when I report to my superiors they will say the same.”

"All right; then I will tell it.”

"It would be my idea that you should accept Göring’s invitation to appear as a witness for him. Tell frankly what you know about his attitude; tell anything in his favor that you wish—it can’t do any harm. Then let the story of Solomon Hellstein be brought out under cross-examination. Its impact will be greatly increased that way, and since you are their witness, Göring’s lawyers will not be permitted to try to impeach your testimony.”

"I would much rather they were permitted, Colonel. The story is true, and I have nothing to fear from cross-examination. How soon would I be called?”

"The prosecution is closing, and Göring will be the first of the defendants to present his case. We should have to fly you...'

Bottom Line:

Comments regarding your opinion of this book or of my review, whether favorable or unfavorable, are always welcome. If you buy the book based on my review and become disappointed, especially, I do want to know that and I want to understand how I can improve as a book reviewer. Just please be polite.

Paradise Flawed - Written without flaw!
By jeffrey armstrong
In "Paradise Flawed" Daniel Write creates a wonderful world of action, love and a real yearning for more! The main character, Mike, is a realistic look at many business men and women of today. Not taking vacations and constantly looking after the business. I identified with this character immediately.

There is a great amount of suspense in the book and you get so wrapped up you can't put it down, thus the red and blurry eyes at work one day for me after staying up until 4am needing to finish the book. The natural disasters, then being hunted and the description of each event and the toll it took on the players was masterful.

One thing I really liked about the book is that I could share it with anyone. You almost overlook the fact that there are no curse words in the book. Daniel does a great job of keeping the language clean all the while keeping the book interesting. Some big time authors should take a lesson.

I have read over 600 novels, that I know of, I have over 500 hard copy 1st edition/first printing novels in my own personal library, I know a good book when I read one and I put this up there with the Barry Eisler, John Sandford type authors and would rate this better than most James Patterson novels.

Thank you Daniel for a great read!

Battle for survival
By Sheila Deeth
Some families are majorly dysfunctional. Others just don't function right. Mike and Brenda, in Daniel Lance Wright's Paradise Flawed, fall into the latter category, with college daughter Jojo gazing on in dismay. How did Brenda "reel so far out of control" and why does Mike just step back? Mike's friend Ed suggests Mike's working himself into his grave. And so the family head off on vacation--to Paradise Mountain Resort.

The dialog's finely tuned and realistic, though formalities of formatting sometimes let it down. The characters are plausible and well-(sometimes overly-)described. And the scenery's truly delightful. The author creates a beautiful early morning vista, with shooting stars and the wafting scent of coffee. But beauty here's as short-lived as Brenda's loveliness, and sudden terror reigns.

The battle for survival is thrillingly told, survivors rising from one danger to the next, each individual proving invaluable for their skills and knowledge. But there are surprises beyond natural disaster, and a frantic chase through the mountains ensues as mysteries wait for resolution.

Paradise Flawed is a satisfying action adventure with truly enjoyable characters and character flaws. Heroes don't all look like they've stepped out of fashion magazines, and even the overweight can fight and run and save the day. A little unedited in places, a little over-explained in others, this novel remains a thoroughly enjoyable read filled with excitement and surprise.

Disclosure: I was given a free e-copy of this book by the publisher, Dream Books LLC, in exchange for an unbiased review.

Suspense high through the story
By Lindah
Have you ever been involved in a situation and not know why? Our male character is a workaholic who is convinced he needs a vacation by his best friend. He goes to the mountains with his wife and daughter to a small resort. The very first day it is blown up. A new list of characters are introduced that must run for their lives. Someone is trying to kill them and they have no idea why. They become involved in many life threatening situations that they must handle. The suspense is high throughout the book. I would have scored this higher except that in the middle of the e-book I suddenly get 2 pages of code. I don't know what happened on those pages or a number of them afterwards that every sentence was preceded by code. It interrupted the flow of the story and I found I was having to pause to regain the theme. I know this is not the authors fault, but the wrong use of words is poor editing. Waist instead of Waste. This was a good story and Daniel is a story teller par excellent.

  • Little Men, or Life at Plumfield with Jo's Boys, is a novel by American author Louisa May Alcott, first published in 1871. The novel reprises characters from Little Women and is considered by some the second book in an unofficial Little Women trilogy, which is completed with Alcott's 1886 novel Jo's Boys, and How They Turned Out: A Sequel to "Little Men". It tells the story of Jo Bhaer and the children at Plumfield Estate School. It was inspired by the death of Alcott's brother-in-law, which reveals itself in one of the last chapters, when a beloved character from Little Women passes away. It has been adapted to a 1934 film, a 1940 film, a 1998 film, a television series, and a Japanese animated television series.

    From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up Louisa May Alcott's charming, although now somewhat dated, companion piece to the perennially popular Little Women highlights the life of the wildest of the March sisters, Jo, now married to her professor, and presiding as the harried but happy mistress over the Plumfield Estate School home to a small group of needy boys, relatives, and sons whose mischievous antics and emotional upheavals provide ample opportunities for Alcott to share her personal philosophy about learning and life. Filled with pathos and humor as well as insights into the mysterious world of childhood, Little Men entertains and educates in equal measure. Justine Eyre's narration slowly lulls listeners back in time to a far gentler and kinder world in which all children are cherished and nurtured to become their very best selves, providing a perfect selection for family listening pleasure. You'll laugh and cry
    By Judy
It is truly a shame that the highest number of stars you can rate a book is five, because I would give this book a million stars if I could. It is truly one of the two best books I have ever read. (The other off course is Little Women).
Little men is a book that can make you both laugh and cry. The morals inside are more useful than any of the ten commandments. Louisa May Alcott has definetly done it again.
Without giving away everything, these are some of the reasons why you will enjoy the book:
    1) You see Jo grow up. She is no longer the wild child who's impetuous and androgynous character often lead her to trouble. She inherits maternal qualities that you never expected Jo to have.
    2) You will get more insight on the professor. Although I truly wanted Teddy and Jo to get together, this book made me think otherwise. Professor Bhaer, with Jo's help, makes a delightful father to the boys. He is the one you will get most of the life morals from.
    3) The boys in Plumfield are definetly the key figures in the book. They create both the mischievious and melancholy stories. As I said, 'you'll laugh and cry'. Reading about these boys will make everyone reflect on their own lives.
    4) Teddy grows up too. If you enjoyed the young scandulous Teddy, you'll enjoy the new one even more. In little men, Teddy (like Jo) has grown into a real mature father.
There are plenty more exciting things in the book. It is truly a classic masterpiece recommended to anyone who needs a lift in their spirit.

    Avoid the IndiePublish Hardback edition
    By Athelas
Please note, this is and has always been, one of my favorite stories. I am not reviewing the story Little Men, but the way it was published by IndiePublish. I would give the story 5 stars, but this presentation only two.

On the bright side, the cloth binding appears very well done and should last quite a while.

Unfortunately, the publisher chose to reformat all the paragraphs in the text so that like this review all margins are left justified and a blank line separates the paragraphs. If it were done well, it might have worked ok, but it was done very clumsily with the completion of a sentence often being separated from the rest of the paragraph. (I have a suspicion that the reformatting of an original text was done by using a Find-Replace function of a word processor and not checked by an editor.) This makes for some awkward readings, and probably not something I would want to put into the hands of a child.

Also the text was not proofed for typos or other simple errors in punctuation, and there are some places where I could not tell what the original sentence was intended to say. Again, I expect that the only proofing done on this version was by a spellchecker and a lot of simple mistakes entered into the publication.

I wish to repeat, that I love this story and have since I was a boy, and would recommend the story to any child, but would not recomment this particular volume.

The wild boys at Plumfield run amok! Jo rejoices!
    By Joanna Daneman
While Little Men is not up to the literary achievement of Little Women, it is a wonderful tale for kids. It is JUST perfect for reading chapter by chapter to kids as part of an evening family night. It is as jolly as a house full of rambunctious boys could be.
Jo Bhaer, nee March, has boys of her own now and boys to spare. She and the Professor take in students based on charity and kindness. Some boys are neglected, some are badly brought up, all need love, laughter and a caring environment. Plumfield is all that and more.
The jolly goings-on make you wish you could have gone to school and lived at Plumfield. The book is prevented from being saccharine by the all-too-familiar themes of neglected kids, growing pains and the sad and much too early death of a favorite character from Little Women.
There is lots of fun, and lots to discuss in this sequel to Alcott's marvelous Little Women. Lest you think boys won't like Alcott, I know more than one man who loves Little Women even as an adult.

Paris Under Siege, by E. E. Hunt

Posing as a wealthy but benevolent Algerian in France, Aboud appears to help poor North Africans in the suburbs of Paris. Penny, a New York reporter, attempts to inform her friend Charles, who experienced great personal loss in New York during 9/11, that Aboud, whom he is doing business with, is in reality an Islamic terrorist. In the Sahara, Charles discovers that Aboud is anything but charitable. When Charles tries to find out what target in Paris Aboud seeks to destroy by rockets or C-4 explosives, he is imprisoned and tortured by Aboud. However, Charles is rescued by Fatima, a Muslim Egyptian flight attendant enslaved by Aboud after a 2001 Islamic riot against women in an Algerian oil town. The two flee by camel across the desert but face dangers at the hands of Aboud's men, and Charles is gravely wounded. When they finally reach Paris and inform Steve Hallcroft at the American embassy of their suspicions, the four-Charles, Fatima, Penny, and Steve-form a team to thwart the destruction of American institutions in Paris.

    Terrorist in Paris
    By Florida Reader
When I looked up E.E. Hunt after reading Paris Under Siege I found this statement on his web site."My intention in writing both "Paris Under Siege "is to help people understand more about the issue of human slavery, particularly in regard to the way some Muslim women are treated as well as those who are kidnapped through the terrible scourge of human trafficking "His book definitely brought to light this topic in an interesting and entertaining manner.
This book leads us along with Penny, a reporter and her friend Charles as they track Aboud, a terrorist, who posed as a wealthy, but benevolent Algerian in France who pretended to help poor Africans in the Paris suburbs. Charles discovers that this man is, in fact, an Islamic terrorist hiding munitions in the Sahara desert, with the target being Paris, the chase begins. Paris comes alive in this book as we see through the eyes of Mr. Hunts who lived and worked in France. This is a book for the times in which we are now living; it enables us to see the many faces of the terrorists walking among us.
Enjoy this book, it will lead you on quite an adventure!!

A definite `can't put it down until the end' read!
    By Prolific book reader
This is a must-read that is so relative to today's world climate. A great story about a wealthy Algerian living in France who gives the appearance of helping poor North Africans living there, but it takes a New York reporter to discover this man is really a terrorist who is hell bent on destroying major landmarks in Paris. The reporter, together with an embassy officer and a female Muslim flight attendant, all go through hell trying to stop him - and they take the reader on a suspense-filled, cat and mouse chase across a desert and later on an unforgettable roller-coaster ride through the streets of Paris. I feel as though I've visited the City of Lights myself now, having seen it through the vivid descriptions of the author who obviously lived there. Make sure you have a lot of time to read when you start this book as I guarantee you won't be able to put it down until it's finished!

After an epidemic spreads through the country, Brooklyn Harper’s high school years come to an abrupt end… Implanted in a rural camp, Brooklyn and her friends are cut off from their families and the outside world. Each day is filled with combat training to assure their safety against the crazed, belligerent, and deadly— those infected with a mysterious virus. As if the world couldn’t get any crazier, a letter ups the insanity… After being assured day after day that the world outside their little camp had been compromised, Brooklyn’s cabin-mate, Dawson Winters, finds a letter that turns everything they’d known upside down. There is a world outside the trees that surround their camp, and the virus they'd all come to fear seems non-existent. Determined to see it herself, Brooklyn plots with others to attempt an escape… On the outside, Brooklyn finds the world is as normal as ever. But when they are attacked in the city, they dispose of their attackers far more efficiently than any normal human. Is there more to Brooklyn and her friends than just being highly trained? Betrayal, love, death, and a powerful sense of camaraderie lead Brooklyn and her friends to fight for their life, their freedom, and most of all, each other.

    Very Entertaining
    By Mikky
    My Rating: ✮✮✮½

This book was very entertaining! I have a long history of enjoying human experiments gone wrong in novels and this one was no exception.

Brooklyn was an awesome heroine, who was not afraid to kick butt and tell it to you straight. She didn't beat around the bush when it came to stressful situations and she really shined in combat/battle. I really took a liking to her and after that ending I want to know what happens next.

Porter was a very cute and witty love interest. I liked him off the bat, but then he confessed and that felt like a nice bucket of cold water on my head (which made me think twice about him as a whole). As the book progressed he won me and everyone else in the book over to his side again.

There were two things that bothered me in this book though. The first was Brooklyn's BFFs name: Gabriel. I have no problem with the name per se when you're talking about a guy. It took me almost the full first chapter to realize that Gabriel was a girl. The second thing that bothered me was how ECHO would find everyone in the span of seconds. I understand they're all powerful and rich, but let's be realistic, no one can send out troops and have them get there THAT fast.

The ending was both very sad and surprising. For a moment, I actually thought 'OMG they are going to make it and be free' and then everything just hit the metaphorical fan. Those last three chapters were so action packed that I didn't even remember anything else existed other than me finishing this book.

    Favorite Quotes:

"You're a lion among wolves, Brooklyn. It's not that we're alike at all - it's that you're more deadly."

"Trust me - I know you don't [need saving], but I'm gonna be here in case you change your mind."

"Control was all she had left, and she was losing it."

    Fantastic
    By Krista
I was excited to be an advance reader for Taylor Brooke's first novel, Omen Operation. The premise was fascinating and I couldn't wait to read it. Genetic experiments, government subterfuge, fight or flight, from start to finish I was hooked.

The story was easy to read, caught my interest quickly, and kept me drawn in as I became invested in the characters and their story. Brooklyn is an intriguing character; her life has already been irrevocably changed, and following her journey as everything she has known is challenged will keep you on her toes. Her bond with Gabriel was one of the best things about the story. They complemented each other well; where Brooklyn can be more hesitant and thoughtful, Gabriel is brash and forward. Gabriel is fierce and makes no bones about it, she is protective and will do whatever she has to.

Porter also kept me interested. His involvement with the whole scheme, going much deeper than just being in the camps with the others, was really a nice touch. I felt as betrayed as the others to find out his role and just how deep his connection to everything was, but he managed to redeem himself. I saw others feeling that Brooklyn forgave him too easily, but I respectfully disagree. They are in an intense situation where their very lives are threatened every step of the way. Brooklyn doesn't have the luxury of staying angry at him and playing hard to get, making him earn her forgiveness. The fact that he left with them and gave up his own safety to not only remain with them, but become one of them, shows his true intention. I found myself pulling for them and hoping they would continue to grow in their relationship with each other.

The ending was action packed and will have you on the edge of your seat. And what a cliffhanger! I can't wait for the next part of the series to find out what happens next. A solid 4.5 stars, stellar rookie effort from a talented writer. Taylor Brooke is definitely one to look out for in the future.

Good start to a new series
    By Carrie G.
After what was thought to be a virus outbreak around the world Brooklyn Harper finds herself in a rural camp with others her age cut off from their friends and family. Those at the camp are going through combat training to be able to fight against the crazed infected with the virus.

When one of Brooklyn's camp mates finds out that the world outside their camp is not what they thought and the virus seems non-existent they decide to attempt an escape. Finding the world seeming absolutely normal in the city they don't know what to think until they are attacked yet again and discover a plot against them sending the group on the run for their lives.

Omen Operation is the first book in the Isolation series by Taylor Brooke. A pretty fast paced adventure it drops a reader right into the action and took a couple of chapters for me to figure out what was happening but when I did I really became engaged in the story.

After a few chapters of this read I really started getting to know the characters a bit better and began to understand the situation they were in I couldn't help but root them on. Without saying too much this has a bit of a different twist on a zombie-ish story and the plot actually became quite intriguing.

Although there was plenty of action to this and a good explanation of the situation this does feel like the first book in a series and leaves the reader wanting more at the end, the story had so much more that could be told and done. After this first book though I'd definitely be interested in seeing what happens on the adventure from here.

Overall, a good start to a new series, fast paced and full of action.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Wonderful read! First of all you get three books for the price of one, so if you read as much as me that's awesome. The characters are captivating, the story is unique and gives a great new spin on Gargoyles. In a time where vampires and werewolves have ruled the paranormal/fantasy market it's great to read something fresh. Rach Elle keeps you guessing and you never know what where the story may take you. P.S Ladies, there are some really sexy gargoyles!

  • Twelve Years a Slave (1853) is a memoir and slave narrative by American Solomon Northup as told to and edited by David Wilson. Northup, a black man who was born free in New York state, details his being tricked to go to Washington, D.C., where he was kidnapped and sold into slavery in the Deep South. After having been kept in bondage for 12 years in Louisiana by various masters, Northup was able to write to friends and family in New York, who in turn secured his release with the aid of the state. Northup's account provides extensive details on the slave markets in Washington, D.C. and New Orleans, and describes at length cotton and sugar cultivation and slave treatment on major plantations in Louisiana. The work was published eight years before the Civil War by Derby & Miller of Auburn, New York, soon after Harriet Beecher Stowe's best-selling novel about slavery, Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852), to which it lent factual support. Northup's book, dedicated to Stowe, sold 30,000 copies, making it a bestseller in its own right.

"A moving, vital testament." - --Saturday Review

    From the Back Cover
This story of the abduction of a free Negro adult from the North and his enslavement in the South--provides a sensational element which cannot be matched in any of the dozens of narratives written by former slaves. 'Think of it: For thirty years a man, wit all man's hopes, fears and aspirations--with a wife and children to call him by the endearing names of husband and father--with a home, humble it may be, but still a home...then for twelve years a thing, a chattel personal, classed with mules and horses....Oh! it is horrible. It chills the blood to think that such are.'

    About the Author
Solomon Northup (1808 - c. 1864-1875) was an African American carpenter who was born free in Minerva, Essex County, New York, but was bound into slavery later in life for a period of 12 years. He regained his freedom in January of 1853.

The Truth Shall Set You Free of Lies
    By MaryAnn
Growing up in the North,I had always found it hard to imagine that slavery not only existed in this country, but flourished.Through the years,I have read many an autobiography or history book concerning slavery and thought I knew it all. And yet I was blind.
Until I read Solomon Northrup's "12 Years a Slave." Where has this book been? It is a masterpiece of history,of one man,one free man's life. A true picture of 'The Old South'.
Mr. Northrup was a free black man with a beautiful wife and two daughters living in Saratoga,NY. He was lured from his home by slave traders who specialized in the awful practice of kidnapping free black citizens and selling them into slavery. Torn from his home and family,Mr.Northrup endured the worst that can happen to a human being, and still live.
And yet,he remained fair and honest, never stooping to the level some of his white masters did.
I am not going to rewrite the book in this review because I recommend reading it for yourself. Slavery was and is a vile institution.
Solomon Northrup is my new inspiration.
This book will shock you. But you will be the better for having read it.
    My highest of fives.

Extraordinary book, but there are better versions on Kindle
    By J. Johnston
As slave stories go, this one is, in my view, without peer. Northup's s captivating tale -- which has gained attention because of the movie that shares the book's title -- is told in exacting detail with an easy prose. He sets the stage masterfully, describing people and places before proceeding into the narrative. Unlike works of fiction, this book is so compelling because, by all accounts, it is true. There is no polemical axe to grind, as with Uncle Tom (a novel at one point wryly referenced by Northup). Here you see both the brutality of slavery and the moments of kindness by slaves and even some slave owners. Solomon tells the story with clarity and intelligence.

The free versions on other sites I found were pretty poorly formatted, so spending a dollar for a polished version on Amazon is worthwhile, but this one is not the best of them. Granted, the book is formatted adequately, and any typographical errors in this version seem to be simple reproductions of the original.

However, the supporting material is a letdown. I read the version that includes the introduction by novelist Dolen Perkins-Valdez. That introduction is borderline insulting, as it makes only a weak attempt to separate accounts with fictional elements like Roots from an authentic account like this one. Worse still, Perkins-Valdez can't resist indulging in repeatedly referencing her own recently released slave novel, even going so far as to quote herself. There are almost no historical elements to this version beyond the main book -- no mention of Northup after the book, no mention of he writer who helped him pen the book, nothing. There is more information on the writer of the introduction than there is the author. One other oddity worth mentioning: the original book's preface -- the one done by the man who helped Northup write the book -- has been curiously excised from this version too. That makes this version something less than complete.

For those looking for a better version, you might consider Twelve Years a Slave - Enhanced Edition by Dr. Sue Eakin Based on a Lifetime Project. New Info, Images, Maps, which contains a robust amount of supporting material and, better still, is right now the same cost as this version.

Awesome indeed, Please Read This Book!
    By A Customer
I read this entire book in one day. I could not put it down. I came across it while trying to learn more about my town. I was in awe after realizing that all this occured some 15 miles from where I now live. I believe this book would make an excellent movie. The way this free black man was taken and sold into salvery is so sad and if I had not been looking into old new paper articles around the area I would have not believed this story. SO many people want to forget about the history of black people but they shouldn't. I don't think anyone can walk away after reading this book and not feel some sort of compassion for the all the souls lost to slavery.

Awakening Spark (The Dwuman Chronicles Book 1)

Once, in ages past, Atlantis existed as a beacon of peace and prosperity between all races - humans and orcs, dwarves and elves, Fae and shape-shifters...even those of mixed origins, such as those who are half-dwarves and half-human - Dwumans. However, forces of Darkness rose up and shattered it, and only the chosen heroes of Light were able to seal the Darkness away before it wiped out the entire planet. One would think that such stories would be important, even in this Digital Age of Techno-Magic, right?

Not to Aiko, a young dwuman woman attending college at the University of Kentucky. Too much of her focus is on kendo practice, streaming favorite shows and surviving her classes in order to pay attention to anything more than the latest news alert on her smartphone and her Tumbler feed on her laptop. And yet, when the forces of Darkness begins to stir again, it is up to this unlikely heroine in order to help stop its spread once again. (Wait, didn't she watch a series based on this premise somewhere...?)

Here lies Book 1 of the Dwuman Chronicles, an action adventure series set in a universe where magical forces and mystical creatures are just part of living on Planet Earth. Here in the modern era, a new team of heroes are called upon to aid in an ancient fight between Light and Darkness, and save Earth from potential destruction. After all, they got important things that they can't let the Darkness take away from them, such as family, freedom, and a "Netflix and wine" session for that Hot New Series.

Three billion miles from home, Commander Xianx Paul helms an antiquated space station orbiting Tangent, a lonely planet at the edge of the solar system. Tangent is a fabled El Dorado, its wealth taking the form of artifacts left behind by its long-lost civilization—powerful relics that have attracted some of the system’s most dangerous criminals.

Understaffed and underequipped, Paul’s crew struggles to maintain order with nothing but the distant threat of military retaliation to back them up. But when an admiral arrives from Central Command intent on advancing her own career, she dismisses Paul’s warnings, accuses him of inaction, and wages a reckless war against a savage gang of smugglers.

But there are more eyes on Tangent than anyone realizes. As other forces rush in to take advantage of the turmoil, Paul and his crew are trapped in a desperate, three-way battle for their very lives.

A crumbling space station, ragtag heroes, and alien artefacts
    By J. Sasse
Tired of Firefly reruns and looking for a new science fiction series to follow? Tangent has exactly what you're looking for - a ragtag bunch of misfit not quite heroes living and working in a crumbling long past obsolete space station on the edge of the universe. What they are missing in tech and backup, they make up for with moxy and creativity. They are led by Commander Xianx Paul, an almost forgotten hero of the last war. Tangent is not the easiest posting. By law noone is allowed on the planet. In reality several million people live amongst the ruins of a long absent civilization. Smuggling scavenged tech is how the people of Tangent survive, and Paul is used to being pragmatic rather than following the letter of the law, particularly since the smugglers have more firepower.

When a Vice Admiral arrives from Central Command to take over the station, it's only a matter of time before her hard enforcement of the rules brings trouble. Something big has been found on Tangent and more than one party is interested in getting their hands on the item.

One character neglected in the description plays what I feel is the most important role. Tanyat "Red" is the government's political liaison. She is clever, a talented pilot, quick on the draw, and not afraid of her own sexuality. Without her, the rest of the crew would be up the proverbial creek without a paddle. In this, what is clearly the first of a series of books, her character has a more central role than Paul.

This is a stand-alone novel, but Tangent is clearly the first in a series. I look forward to see what Brett James has up his sleeve for the next installment.

Great new read for fans of Firefly!
    By Tom Shutt
A misfit crew of outcasts and exiles manning an aging space station isn't an unheard-of core premise in science fiction, so I was interested to see how Tangent would be different from all the other sci-fi books out there. Beyond that general outline, though, the story shines through with its strong characters, consistent pacing, and plenty of humor mixed in with the action.

Basically, a far-flung orbital outpost above the planet of Tangent is falling into disrepair, and its crew knows that their positions here are basically dead-ends in their careers. Good boys and girls don't get sent to Tangent. Here, they are destined to watch over petty criminals smuggling almost worthless goods between the planet's surface and buyers in the outer rim. Everything changes, though, when a high-ranking military officer arrives to take command of the station, turning the crew's routine on its head and causing questions to be raised about why, exactly, a gorgeous vice admiral is being brought out to oversee a frontier outpost long since written off as worthless.

If you've seen the TV series 'Firefly' or its spiritual predecessor, 'Farscape', a lot of the characters will feel familiar to you. A bumbling, but fair and well-meaning captain; a seductress who also knows her way around a weapon; a lighthearted pilot who's way too qualified for his posting, and so on. But the story doesn't rest on the laurels of these tropes; instead, the author brings all the characters together in commiseration or conflict over their new situation, forcing the crew of the Tangent station to prove themselves in unlikely ways for some, and in disturbing ways for others.

There are hints at larger worldbuilding hiding throughout the story, and the beginning and end of the book definitely point toward a larger arc that isn't visible within the pages of Tangent. Brett James doesn't leave you dangling on a cliffhanger, but it's also clear that there are much bigger things in store for the series, and the ideas presented in Tangent just make me excited to see what's yet to come.

If you appreciate motley crews, smarmy smugglers, and shadowy government figures, all orbiting a planet supposedly covered in technologically advanced artifacts from a civilization long gone, then Tangent is worth sinking an afternoon or weekend into reading.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

A Cold War in a solar system far, far away
    By Utenzi
I received a free copy of this novel in an exquisite paperback edition from the author for the purposes of a review.

I loved this book. Tangent is a short novel that introduces the reader to a new SF series by Brett James that is inspired by a film, Cold War, that James made 20 years. I've never seen the film but it's certainly started something special here. By the end of the novel I was so interested in the characters that I gnashed my teeth in frustration that I'd have to wait for the next installment.

While it's tempting to label this as Space Opera due to the typical SF backdrop of spaceships and fallen civilizations, it's really more a cold war style book with action and intrigue that just happens to occur at the outskirts of a distant solar system. I suspect future installments will explore the political ramifications of the action that occurs in Tangent as well as develop the very interesting backstory of the lead character, Xianx Paul, a heroic survivor of an earlier war who's been sent to the remote posting of Tangent to keep him away from an Admiral's daughter.

It's really quite remarkable how many interesting story elements James juggles in this short book. The remnants of an ancient civilization, presumably created by the ancestors of the characters in the book, hints of aliens, intrigue betwixt government, the military and the intelligence service and of course a crew of very interesting individuals. It's going to be a lot of fun.
