Terrible. More than editing and proofreading is needed.
By A. Bodmer
This book was written almost 2 years ago and still hasn't been edited to correct numerous mistakes in grammar, spelling, and just plain misunderstandings, such as when the author uses "IAD" instead of "IED".

This book is in the top 2000 paid in the Kindle store right now. People like myself are buying it and giving a new author a shot, only to keep getting pulled out of the flow of the story by frequent errors in the language. Surprisingly, so far, I'm liking it, but I'm not even 30 pages in and the rate of errors is so high I'm struggling to keep re-entering the story every few minutes instead of just quitting and opening one of the several dozen unread books in my kindle library, some of which are by my favorite authors.

I know reading negative reviews can be hard, but please take this and others with a similar message as constructive criticism. It may cost a bit to get a good edit done, but it's worth it to avoid reviews like this going up. Plus, readers will have a much improved experience of your work.

Update: I'm up to page 67 where a character just talked about people approaching the "parameter" of a base. There are numerous errors like this where the problem isn't just some excessive or misplaced commas, or spelling, or grammar, but using the wrong word altogether. I think I'm just about done, and downgrading from * * * to * *.

Update #2: Downgrading from * * to *. Interesting opening but ... beyond the previously mentioned problems, the characterization is awful, and eh just no. Find another book.

Not a bad start but some serious editing needs to be done...
By Amazon Customer
I like the whole superhero genre and this isn't a bad start at superhero worldbuilding. But for gods sake find a proofreader. I ran across far too many glaringly bad grammar mistakes. Whenever I'd run across a particularly bad bit, I'd put a note on the kindle. At the end I had over 50 notes. Hint number one... "with relative ease" not relative easy, that happened a few times. Glass patrician? Man, turn off whatever spell checker you're using, you'd be better off. Also, DC isn't really a state.
Despite the bad grammar, the characters weren't bad, and the story was good enough to make me finish.

Enormous amounts of typos and grammatical errors made reading difficult. Proof reading and editing obviously were not a priority in this effort.

In a letter to be read only after his death, Gerald Rayner discloses to Dan some intimate truths, uninhibited in the knowledge he will never see Dan again. He writes freely of his feelings and attempts to explain them and his strange behaviour by enclosing a story written only for Dan, in which he reveals some deep secrets about himself, and about others. Supersecrets. So secret that they have never before been committed to paper but exist only in the minds of a handful of men, and one woman. Secrets so terrifying that the burden of knowledge is almost unbearable. Gerald takes Dan back in time to the last years of the Cold War, of spies and espionage, life, death and danger, a time before Dan was even born. But the tale moves forward through the years to the tragedy of 9/11, then on to their last and final meeting in April, 2015. Gerald explains gently why he had to end their relationship so abruptly and harshly, and begs forgiveness for a terrible and tragic wrong. And he makes a promise... Dan receives the letter and story in a sealed package two years later, with a covering letter from Gerald's step-daughter which breaks the news of his death. A few days later, Dan receives an email from her with 'the final chapter' of Gerald's story in the form of a diary which she finds on his computer. It would seem Gerald had spent the last two years of his life trying to make amends, but failed to see the terrifying consequences of becoming embroiled in the UK's Secret Intelligence Service, MI6, as it struggles to meet the demands of a changing and uncertain world.

  • Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells of a girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. Its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre.

    Amazon.com Review
"And what is the use of a book," thought Alice, "without pictures or conversations?"

Taking to heart his charming, insatiably curious heroine's words, Lewis Carroll worked many long hours (days, months...) with illustrator Sir John Tenniel to create the most perfect pictures imaginable for what were to become instant classics: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. When thinking about Alice and her dreamy surrealistic adventures down the rabbit hole and behind the looking-glass, who can help picturing the golden-haired girl in her lilac dress and striped stockings, gazing up at the Cheshire Cat or arguing with Tweedledum and Tweedledee? Tenniel's drawings remained black and white for over 40 years until 1911, when eight prints in each book were hand colored. Now, for the first time, every remaining illustration has been colored, making these the first editions to feature all of the original art in full color. Traditionalists need not worry: colorist Diz Wallis colored proofs taken from Tenniel's carefully preserved woodblocks, remaining faithful to his original drawings. The beautiful tones of these new hardcover editions look as natural as can be; they could just as easily be from the 19th century. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

    From Publishers Weekly
wonderland revisited Spanish illustrator Angel Dominguez fills an unabridged edition of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland with 75 watercolors, most of them closely packed with lush oversized flowers, strange creatures and winding vines reminiscent of Art Nouveau-often against bizarrely serene pastoral backgrounds. Exotic birds and animals, such as peacocks and zebras, wander through the picture frame. While the illustrations bring out the text's absurdity, pretty-in-pink Alice provides a counterpoint not of normalcy but of sentimentality.

    From School Library Journal
Grade 4 Up-- Edens has compiled and arranged illustrations from 25 editions of Alice in Wonderland published in the early to mid-1900s. The result is a fascinating look at a variety of illustrative styles. This is far less jarring than one might expect because the original illustrator, John Tenniel, has so strongly influenced his successors that their interpretations are often similar in design. In fact, the fascination in these pictures is the differing details--Alice's dress, her hairstyle, and her expressions tell much about the time period and the artist's viewpoint. Edens has also done a fine job of integrating the pictures with the text. He varies interest by utilizing full-page plates, half plates, vignettes, and even reducing some illustrations to fit the design so the book flows fairly well and these myriad illustrations blend into a whole rather than distract the eye. The reproduction is excellent. A must for collections with historical interest in children's literature and large libraries. --Karen K. Radtke, Milwaukee Public Library

I finally, and seemingly permanently, misplaced the 40 year old copy of 'The Annotated Alice' (which I had pilfered from my mother's bookshelf) for the last time. I can't go more than a month or two without it so I rushed to buy a new copy...just weeks before the more beautifully bound 'Definitive Edition' was published. No matter, now I have two (perhaps even three if the original turns up).
My point is that this book contributed more to my understanding of logic and wordplay than several semesters of college philosophy classes. If you've read this far then I am probably preaching to the choir but 'Alice in Wonderland' can hardly be classified as a childrens' book, dispite Disney's attempts to do so. The concepts Lewis Carroll and Martin Gardner bring to this tale cover such areas as set theory, meta-language, Aristotelian logic, topography, game theory, several pre-Socratic logic paradoxes, and even quantum physics. Yet John Tenniel's original illustrations remain as an welcome tether to the original publication.
Gardner does a wonderful job of bringing all the various aspects of these two stories together as he illuminates layer upon layer of meaning that might not be evident to an American audience or, for that matter, a 21st century one. My favorite gems are the French and German translations of The Jabberwocky.
This book ranks in my top five favorite books of all time.

The Looking Glass Shows Hidden Humor
    By Ian
I always enjoyed the twisted logic and unique sence of humor that I found in Lewis Carroll's Alice tales, the only problem I encountered was that some of the jokes required information that was no longer common knoledge. For example: when Alice continually misquoted the old English nursery rhymes I found myself wondering what the actual versions were, information that every child in Victorian England could have easily told me but that has since been lost to obscurity. After reading through this book I found the answers to all my original questions as well as many that I never considered asking. At first I thought that the commentary would strip the original work of its character and reduce it to a lifeless shadow. I found that the commentary did exactly the opposite, in a surreal way it made the book even more entertaining to read. The incredible detail of the commentary and the wide range of topics covered made the comments themselves seem part of the insane illogic that pervades the realms of wonderland and looking glass house. This does not mean that the coments themselves are insane or illogical, on the contrary they are all intresting and many offer new insights into the books, what makes the commentary so entertaining is how the story of "exactly 7 and one half" Alice is juxtaposed with comments on how the structure of the plot relates to physic and Robert Oppenheimer. Altogether I found the Annotated Alice to be a wonderful read and a gorgeous book which I recomend to anyone who enjoyed the original tales.

    Master of Nonsense
    By Bryan A. Pfleeger
The Annotated Alice provides a treasure chest of information on the two Alice books and on the man, Lewis Carroll who was responsible for their creation.
Martin Gardner provides annotations throughout the texts of both Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There. Gardner's annotations help explain the inside jokes and mathematical and linguistic puzzles that fill the stories.
Reading the Alice books as an adult is quite a different experience than it was as a child. The books' complexity really stands out on a careful reading. In fact, what are generally regarded as children's stories can be amazingly frustrating to read due to the complexity of the language and the almost constant stream of puns that are sometimes lost on modern audiences. One must remember that the stories are told purely for fun. Unlike other Victorian children's literature one gets no morals, plot development, or character development here. Alice is a yound child who stays a young child throughout her adventures. She neither matures or learns anything from her adventures.
This is a very nice volume in its own right. It contains complete authoritative texts of both books and includes the supressed episode "The Wasp in the Wig." The original Tenniel illustrations are crisp and clear. The only difficulty is that the annotations are placed on the same page as the text in a small column that sometimes supplies more information than the text itself. The annotations themselves range from the definitional to the clearly eccentric. One can read all of them or only the ones that he or she is interested in.
On the whole this is an excellent volume well worth the effort to read if one has any interest in the world of nonsense literature.

  • The Scarlet Letter: A Romance is an 1850 work of fiction in a historical setting, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, and is considered to be his best work. Set in 17th-century Puritan Boston, Massachusetts, during the years 1642 to 1649, it tells the story of Hester Prynne, who conceives a daughter through an affair and struggles to create a new life of repentance and dignity. Throughout the book, Hawthorne explores themes of legalism, sin, and guilt.

    From School Library Journal
Grade 9-Up Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic novel of Puritanism giving rise to twisted gender politics, hypocrisy, and strength of character in the face of public scorn is well realized in this reading by Annie Wauters. She gives individual tone and rhythm to each of the main characters, while keeping the passages of narrative relatively uninflected. While this suits the author's own sometimes dry writing, it means that listeners must get to the second hour before the story truly gets underway. Since this lengthy forepart fits almost entirely onto the first disk, and each chapter is clearly marked as to track number on the packaging, it is possible to simply skip ahead rather than give up what becomes a delightfully lively listening experience once the romance gets going. Because the reading adheres so entirely to the print in spirit as well as in word, this is an excellent choice for students who cannot access print or who would like to accomplish college prep reading while undertaking other activities. Sturdy packaging makes this a shelf ready purchase.

“Anyone interested in how novels refract history will be enriched by the Broadview edition of The Scarlet Letter. The valuable introduction and extensive archival material will give readers a great foundation for using Hawthorne’s historicist methodology as a model for discussing the complexities of history and storytelling not only for Hawthorne but for contemporary readers as well.” ― Lauren Berlant, University of Chicago

“John Stephen Martin’s meticulously prepared edition of The Scarlet Letter offers both students and general readers the most comprehensive introduction to Hawthorne’s life and work currently available in one volume. With its historical contextualization, enormously helpful annotations, and judicious assessment of Hawthorne’s greatest work, it establishes itself as the single best guide to this great American masterpiece.” ― Joel Porte, Cornell University

“This edition is the most effective teaching tool for Hawthorne’s text that I know. Contained within a single volume, students have everything that is necessary for a rich understanding of one of the most important moments in American literary history. Especially donative are the substantial contextualizations provided here―literary, social, and historical―and in turn, these contextualizations ground the principal issues with which Hawthorne’s romance engages. Supplementary to all this is the extensive bibliography, far-ranging and comprehensive. This edition is easily the most comprehensive introduction to the work that is currently available.” ― Ian Bell, Keele University

This is not the book you hated in high school . . .
    By Alesha N. Gates
There are so many things I could say about this book, but should I reach the heights of elegance achieved only by Shakespeare, Hawthorne himself, or Faulkner, I could not overcome the horrible, terrible misconceptions most people have formed after having this beautiful novel foisted upon them in high school. Instead, I'll share a few observations and some tips for reading.

First, this is a complicated story. It's not about evil Puritans and hero Hester, although you will read this point of view in the cheat note summaries on the internet. It's not about feminism, really, nor is it about religion in any technical sense. The only comparison that really fits is that of love story, or love triangle, or maybe love square. (I told you it is complicated.) In all of literature, there are very few writers who have penned characters so incredibly real and well-rounded. When you finish the novel, you KNOW these people. Certainly there is some minor societal commentary, but the real story here is about these people.

Now, I'm assuming that many people looking at this page have been told they must read this book for high school English. As a former teacher of said subject, I have some pointers.

    (1) Make sure you read the book for yourself. Chances are (in our current educational system) your teacher is going to have a flat interpretation of this book, likely gleaned from some ready-made teaching packet. (If you have another kind of teacher, consider yourself lucky.) You can have some very interesting class discussions if you actually read the material and challenge some of the majority opinions about the novel. Be a rebel. Have some fun in English.

    (2) Read *The Custom House* introduction, but wait until after you've finished the book. It's only good in that it explains Hawthorne's view of his own book (difficult and painful) and reveals his struggle to write it. The writing style, however, is decidedly un-Hawthorne and more difficult to read than the rest of the book. If you read it first, you will be unfairly biased against the novel.

(3)Read it SLOWLY, if at all possible. The storyline is complex and should be read with care. I would also recommend underlining and taking notes, if your copy of the book allows it. You will develop a truly deep appreciation of the work.

    (4) Finally, avoid the Demi Moore 1995 adaptation AT ALL COSTS. Words cannot describe how awful it is. And if your hope is to find something to help you on the test, the only real similarities are the character's names and the red patch on Hester's dress. If you must see a film version, find the PBS miniseries with John Heard and Meg Foster (made in the 1970s). It does the best job that a film possibly could with this material.

Good read, but hard to navigate ebook
    By Srinivas Chetty
I have long wanted to read this book by Nathaniel Hawthorne. It was one of the first books I downloaded when I got my kindle 2. The character portrayals are superb. It analyses the thoughts, motivations, strengths and weaknesses of the four major characters in the story - Hester Prynn, the vengeful doctor, the hapless minister and Hester's vivacious and elf-like daughter Pearl. The description of the little girl and how she copes with being ostracized with her mother by a rigid puritanical society, is especially moving. While there are some descriptions of nature that are quite vivid, most of the text goes into developing these four characters and is a fascinating psychological study, though at times it's little slow.

Overall, a well-crafted story and a good read.

The book though is hard to navigate on the kindle because it has no active table of contents. I therefore would not purchase this version at regular price. Luckily, it's free!

    "The Scarlet Letter"
    By D. Bass
Like many reviewers here, I was "forced" to read this book for my English Composition class. However, unlike many reviewers here, I have a much different view of the story. As some people have said before, Hawthorne's book takes a good deal of concentration, effort, and strength to understand. Not only to understand, but to finish. The story can drag sometimes, it is true, and Hawthorne's style of writing occasionally leaves something to be desired (I don't think I've ever seen that many commas, 15 letter words, or page long paragraphs before), but we simply must look past these minor issues. Overall, the plot is highly creative and intense, despite the writing.\
Ok, ok, I agree that the first chapter, "The Custom-House", was pretty bad. In fact, it was so bad and boring that I drifted off to sleep several times while reading it! The first chapter has little relevancy with the story, so, unless you have to, I would suggest skipping that part of the text. The rest is exceptionally good, and the quality of the plot cannot be overlooked. My advice is to just lay off the first chapter; that way you'll be able to enjoy the rest of the book without difficulty.
The story itself deals with sin and adultery, a subject that isn't very popular right now. Hawthorne does an excellent job of telling us about this, but he leaves the reader with many questions floating around in his mind at the conclusion. At the end of the story you're not 100% sure if Hawthorne was condemning the Puritan society, or if he was commending it. He leaves that for the reader to figure out, which is a thing authors seldom do. That's a major reason I believe this work is so unique and timeless.
The story involves a women named Hester Prynne, living in the New World in the late 17th century. She has committed adultery with someone unknown, and, since the Puritan society considered the Bible to be their ultimate source of law, the punishment was quite severe for such an act. Hester is forced to wear a scarlet "A" (for adultery) on her attire at all times, as a sign to everyone that she has sinned deeply. And so she must carry out the rest of her life this way. That's the major gist of the plot, although there's much more. I won't give it anyway, though, you'll have to read the book to find out.
Let's face it: at some time or another we all are going to probably have to read this book, voluntarily or involuntarily. Shouldn't we try to make the best of it? Read it for its enjoyment, anything else would be missing the point.

For three years, Tassin has tried to find a way to travel to the stars to free Sabre. Her hunt for the Core sword proves futile until she discovers where Sabre hid it. She persuades the malevolent weapon to take her to him, and arrives on the planet Ferrinon Four. Lost in a modern city, she goes to a private detective who, since she has no money, advises her to try a young hacker. Kole agrees to help her look for a cyber she only knows is somewhere on the planet. Without Sabre’s serial number, she must go in search of him. If she does locate him, however, she cannot buy him and cybers cannot be stolen. Even Kole, an expert hacker, says it is impossible to hack a control unit. Tassin’s only source of potential wealth is the sword, an oddity for which a rich mogul might pay handsomely, although the idea of buying Sabre is abhorrent to her. Then, she has to find a way to free him from cyber control, since Manutim would have taken him to Myon Two for repairs. There is a chance she may never be able to free him again, but at least she can ensure he no longer suffers. What kind of torture has Cybercorp subjected Sabre to, and will he still be the man she loves?

    so, so
    By M. Teresa Chamorro
I have really enjoyed all of TC Southwells books until I got to this series, the Cyber Chronicles. The first three books of this series were a short, easy, fun to read but by the time I finished Cyborg,IV I was really kind of bored and tired of Tassin and Sabre. Their characters haven't evolved or grown very much since the first book.
I think it would have been more interesting perhaps if the books in this series had been combined. In this case, i'm sorry to say "more is not neccessarily better," especially since the price of each book has gotten slightly higher.
I do want to say that I have read all of TC Southwell's other series' and really enjoyed them!

    An addictive series, book 4
    By Never without a book
I find the Cyber Chronicles to be an addictive series. The characters are likeable, even the bad guys, and the premise is well thought out. I do stumble at times with the spelling of some of the words, but that's not a big issue.

Watching the complexity of Saber and Tassin is interesting and I will admit that I am amazed that there are 9 books. I do think that the author could collapse this series down by combining the books; meaning books one and two should be one book, etc.

I am enjoying the introduction of the new characters who work in the cyber lab. It is also good to learn that Saber really is special because of the way he was constructed. I eagerly look forward to the next book in the series.

Original and great series. I don't usu read fantasy type but this series is so good that no matter the genre you get sucked in. Writing style better than most with the occasional odd tense or participle. I would guess English is not original USA variety. So technically she could be correct while sounding off ... Example: he swimmed across the river and leant into the wind (shorter paraphrase) I would write as he swam across the river and leaned into the wind. For some reason that kept bugging me. Fabulous characters that grow and change, surprises everywhere, great fun. Be aware they start free and cost more at the end. Which is fair and smart.
