Wagon Train
By lynne
This is a short book about a young man who comes from a violent past and is now drawn to a beautiful preacher's daughter. The characters are well drawn and the action holds your attention. The ending makes me wonder if there might be a sequel in the works. A good book for lovers of Westerns.

"A Well-Written Western That Stands Up to the Genre"
By Teresa
I listened to the Audible audio version of this book.

REDEMPTION was a good solid short western written by Stephen Wilson that I think would stand with any other good western. With this being a short story, it had the feel of a full length novel. All the elements were in place such as the plot, the setting. and the characters; both good and bad. Being an outlaw-ish type, Palmer, the protagonist was a likable character. He had morals when the others didn't, which made for a good contrast.

The western genre is one I like and this one held up. I could feel the trail dust in the air and smell the the gritty leather and horses. That coupled with an experienced narrator made this a welcome listen.

J. SCOTT BENNETT rendered a flawless performance with his vocal skills. His voice lent an old west quality that was absolutely perfect. "Redemption" was a great match of author/reader and I'd like to hear more from both in the future. I'll definitely keep my eye out.

Unnecessary Revisions Weaken a Classic
By R. D. Clark
If you're like me, you read these novels as a youngster in the late 50's or early 60's, and you were drawn in not just by the no-wasted-motion adventure/scifi style for which Ms. Norton became so well loved, but by the glimpses of a not-too-distant future that was clearly based on a somewhat uncertain present. The style is still there in this new edition, but the future, sadly, is gone. For reasons that elude me, the political/cultural milieu of the original near-future has been updated (the Bad Guys are no longer "Reds," they're from a post-USSR-breakup "resurgent Russia"), and the result is not a good fit. The narrative and characterizations still have that squeaky-clean Fifties feel, so the 90's references feel anachronistic. Part of the pleasure of reading classic sf is to enjoy the retro flavor; this attempt to overlay a contemporary veneer simply rings false. What's worse, the paperback edition, which I purchased, bears no indication anywhere that these revisions exist. I discovered them only as I read along and became increasingly disturbed by things that didn't fit. If you want to read a classic, and especially if you want to relive the experience of reading the classic you remember from your youth, do yourself a favor and track down the original text.

Wonderfully fun stuff! [R.I.P. Andre Norton 17 March 2005]
By Steven Eldredge
There is nothing quite like the type of space yarn that the great and greatly prolific Andre Norton wrote in the 1950s and 1960s. Well-crafted, colorful, exciting, with a wonderful sense of strangeness and awe to the settings and descriptions, these books never fail to delight, no matter how many times you read them. Even the elements which tend to date these novels add a sort of nostalgic charm that I find irresistable. Baen Books is to be applauded for its plan to re-publish a lot of her out-of-print novels in these omnibus editions. If you have yet to get into Andre Norton, now is a good time. You are bound to have a fun fun time!

An Entertaining Read
By Zach
"Time Traders" fell under the recommendation list for me as a free Kindle. At first, I wasn't really all that into typical science fiction stories of the 50s, though I do enjoyed some of them. The cover itself wasn't as interesting as the title itself. Admittedly, I am a fan of all things time-travel. So, I put aside a time to read this with no expectations.

This Kindle version actually have two books in one: "The Time Traders" and "Galactic Derelict." The former is the first in the series quite appropriately entitled "The Time Traders" with the latter being the second novel. The first focuses on a confrontation between the US and the "Reds" as well as the mysterious alien race that has used time travel (this novel route back and forth between present day and a trading tribal society in ancient Britain). The main character is Ross Murdock, who always in trouble with the laws, but he was chosen for his physical make-up and quickly recruited into the army of time. Through him, we discover a conflict between the Russians and the Americans in the past and by an accident, an alien race who aren't happy to see one of their own neglected crashed ships on Earth being looted. The second novel directs our attention to a new character, Travis Fox, an American Indian, as he eventually stumbled upon the army of time and became recruited as well. Both Fox and the characters of the previous story taken upon a secret mission to recover a crashed ship in the past and eventually, in an emergency, Fox, Ross, Ashe, with technician Renfry, all taken shelter inside an intact ship and became trapped when the ship takes off on an automatic course. During their journey, they'd experience three worlds, no longer alive with an advanced alien civilization, and work their way back home.

Needless to say, I actually found myself enjoying this series and will attempt to read more by this author. As I was getting into the stories, I can see that they are pure adventure, action-packed, quite suitable for young adult audience. Which, all made me wish that I would read this series when I was a kid - I would really enjoy them, then and now.

  • The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club (also known as The Pickwick Papers) is Charles Dickens's first novel. He was asked to contribute to the project[which?] as an up-and-coming writer following the success of Sketches by Boz, published in 1836 (most of Dickens' novels were issued in shilling instalments before being published as complete volumes). Dickens (still writing under the pseudonym of Boz) increasingly took over the unsuccessful monthly publication[which?] after the original illustrator Robert Seymour had committed suicide. With the introduction of Sam Weller in chapter 10, the book became the first real publishing phenomenon, with bootleg copies, theatrical performances, Sam Weller joke books, and other merchandise. After the publication, the widow of Robert Seymour claimed that the idea for the novel was originally her husband's; however, in his preface to the 1867 edition, Dickens strenuously denied any specific input, writing that "Mr Seymour never originated or suggested an incident, a phrase, or a word, to be found in the book."

    Review
''[A] supreme masterpiece. . . The great example of everything that made Dickens great.'' --G. K. Chesterton

''Charles Dickens . . . began his literary career as a magazine contributor, writing under the pseudonym ''Boz,'' publishing Sketches by Boz in 1836. His comic masterpiece, The Pickwick Papers (serialized in 1836-37), was intended as 20 monthly installments. Because of the popularity of the series, Dickens increased the number to 40, making the book some 750 pages long. Fear not, gentle listener, you will never be bored. The madcap adventures of Samuel Pickwick, wealthy retired businessman with a gigantic brain, and his three young friends, Tupman, Winkle, and Snodgrass, poke fun at the law, religion, debtors prisons, romance, the medical profession, dueling, con men, local elections, the media, a lawsuit for breach of promise, and other difficulties too numerous to mention. Pickwick is accompanied by accompanied by his faithful servant Sam Weller, whose old father keeps marrying widows. And everybody in England seems to be an alcoholic or at least tipsy much of the time. Through it all, Pickwick's virtue and naïvete shine, a beacon to his club members and the many friends he makes along the way. Many anecdotes told by those many friends let Dickens flex his literary muscles. He writes scenes of tender love, death scenes to make you weep, grinding poverty, soul-blighting prisons but balances all with wit and uproarious humor. Dickens' masterwork is narrated by the incomparable Simon Prebble, a British-born performer, veteran of stage and television. He has narrated some three-hundred audiobooks. He gives the novel the full-voiced treatment, with accents and fluttery females given to hysterics. Highly recommended.'' --SoundCommentary.com (starred review)

    From the Inside Flap
Charles Dickens's satirical masterpiece, "The Pickwick Papers, catapulted the young writer into literary fame when it was first serialized in 1836-37. It recounts the rollicking adventures of the members of the Pickwick Club as they travel about England getting into all sorts of mischief. Laugh-out-loud funny and endlessly entertaining, the book also reveals Dickens's burgeoning interest in the parliamentary system, lawyers, the Poor Laws, and the ills of debtors' prisons. As G. K. Chesterton noted, "Before [Dickens] wrote a single real story, he had a kind of vision . . . a map full of fantastic towns, thundering coaches, clamorous market-places, uproarious inns, strange and swaggering figures. That vision was Pickwick."

    Hilarious, delightful
    By Ritesh Laud
Charles Dickens wrote The Pickwick Papers in his early 20s, but the writing is first rate and as witty as any seasoned author could have done in his place! Like many of Dickens's works, Pickwick was published in monthly installments, or "numbers" as they were called then. Although Dickens originally intended to end the story at the twentieth number, the popularity of the series (and the resultant income) convinced Dickens to double the length to forty numbers. The end result is a large offering that'll take you a while to get through (~750 pages in the excellent Penguin edition, which I read).
Despite its length, Pickwick never tries your patience. It's delightfully humorous from beginning to end. Samuel Pickwick is the bumbling, middle-aged, wealthy namesake of this novel. He's the leader of a small group of single men that gets into all sorts of mischief, both physical and social. Booze is rampant. Apparently liquor back then was much more a part of daily life than today; everywhere these guys go they party and get drunk. They get into trouble with the law, women, unsavory characters, and more.
Characterization is superb. This is one of the few novels I've read for which I can actually say that I got to know the characters. In most books I've read, the characters remain two-dimensional and the plot is what carries the story. In Pickwick, the *characters* are the essence of the story and the novel wouldn't be memorable at all if a lesser author were attempting to breathe life into these people.
The Penguin edition includes a decent collection of endnotes to help explain unfamiliar portions of the text. Nevertheless, there were still quite a few words and concepts peculiar to early 19th century England that I didn't grasp. This edition also has maps of southern England and a key to the specific locations that the Pickwickians visit. In addition, two appendices reprint some of the announcements and prefaces that Dickens wrote in relation to the work.
Highly recommended, particularly if you enjoy classic literature! Dickens's later works overshadow this gem due to their maturity, but Pickwick beats them all in enthusiasm, humor, and wit.

    Pure and shining brilliance
    By Jeffrey Leach
I have absolutely no doubts whatsoever that Charles Dickens, if he lived today, would still classify as an author's author. He's a master of all the things that make for great writing and storytelling. Dickens has an ear for dialogue most authors would kill their own mothers to possess. He also is a master of creating vivid scenery, another sign of excellence essential to great writing and one which many authors lack. Finally, but not least in importance, Dickens knows character development. He REALLY knows how to develop intriguing characters, to the point where many of his books spawned figures that have become literary archetypes. Not bad for a guy who grew up in extremely adverse circumstances. He even spent some time in a factory sticking labels on bottles after his father's imprisonment for debt. Most people wouldn't recover from such poverty, but Dickens did. He went on to a successful career in journalism before settling down as an author of serial novels. This format, which allowed Dickens to write and release his stories piecemeal, made him a great success with the public. The anticipation for the latest chapter or two of his stories often led to near riots. Not many writers can duplicate this feat today.

"The Pickwick Papers" is one of Dickens's earliest works, written when the author was a mere twenty-four years old. You wouldn't know his age by reading the story, though. "Pickwick" is a work that delivers healthy doses of sophisticated humor, keen observations on pressing social issues, romance, and a mature knowledge of human behavior. It's of course fiction, although Dickens presents the story as a true series of events documented by the "Pickwick Club," a social organization founded by retired businessman and all around merry fellow Samuel Pickwick. In the 1820s, Pickwick and several friends embark on a series of journeys through Southern England, a journey that lasts for roughly two years. Ostensibly, the businessman and his fellows take the trips to learn more about their country. Instead, their travels turn into a series of often hilarious events mixed with a few serious scrapes. Pickwick must constantly save individuals from the machinations of one Alfred Jingle, an itinerant scalawag with a penchant for wooing women for their money. In between these adventures, our hero must contend with a lawsuit filed by a former female employee who thought he wanted to marry her, save his friends from numerous imbroglios involving members of the opposite sex, survive a stay in a debtor's prison, and live through a couple hundred other adventures both major and minor.

If I had to list one overarching theme I enjoyed most about "The Pickwick Papers," it's got to be the humor. This book is one of the funniest things I've read in ages. We're talking laugh out loud and laughing later when remembering scenes from the book funny. Much of the humor centers on Pickwick's manservant Sam Weller, a guy prone to uttering some of the most hilarious sayings you'll likely see in any book. Weller's father is even more amusing, and when father and son sit down to write a letter to a lovely young woman who's caught Sam's eye, well, prepare to hold your sides. Also worth a belly laugh or two is the chapter where Pickwick and his friends visit the town of Eatanswill in time to witness the results of a contentious local election. Dickens's observations about party politics and media manipulation are not only highly amusing, but also relevant to our own age. And who can forget the courtroom scenes where the lawyer makes Pickwick, this kindly old gentleman who wouldn't hurt a fly, look like an absolute monster? I could go on and on. If you read this book without cracking up, check your pulse because you're probably dead.

Another element of the book I enjoyed concerns Dickens's ability to write scenes that simply overflow with the joy of living. A lengthy chapter describing Pickwick's stay with some country friends over Christmas serves as an excellent example. The sheer bliss of this part of the book is infectious, as Dickens makes us marvel at the simple delight of spending a few days in the company of good friends, good food, and good entertainment. On the other hand, the author isn't above indulging in an activity he's become famous for, namely showing the reader the depths of human suffering. There is far less misery in "The Pickwick Papers" than there is in "Oliver Twist," to cite one example, but it's still here. The debtor's prison in which Pickwick stays for a time provides the author with a perfect forum for attacking England's tradition of imprisoning those unfortunate souls who cannot pay their creditors. I marvel at how Dickens can balance these two extremes in the space of a single novel. In this way, "The Pickwick Papers" manages to encompass life in both its good and bad aspects.

I read the Penguin Classics edition of "The Pickwick Papers," and I'm glad I did. The supplementary material is copious and helpful more often than not. I didn't care much for the introduction from Robert L. Patten, however, which I thought tried to read too much into the story. I did appreciate the footnotes that help explain the English geography, slang, and popular culture references found throughout the story. Further material provides information on the three illustrators who worked on the story, biographical details of Dickens's life, and even maps tracing Pickwick's myriad travels through the English countryside. Reading "The Pickwick Papers" makes me realize that I've neglected this author's works for far too long. I can't praise this book enough; it's that entertaining and that good. Give it a go as soon as possible!

...reading delight. Whenever I get depressed or feel like I can't start another book, I re-read some passages of this book written by Charles Dickens. It is one of the best books written in English. Intentionally syrupy and over-sweet, Dickens writes so perfectly as to make the reader wonder how anyone could ever write so gorgeously. If you pass this one up, you're cheating yourself. I couldn't put the book down. It's a rare and special novel that keeps me in bed over the weekend reading from dawn to sleep.

    Bad Analysis, by Colin Knight

In London, a delusional racist aristocrat, invisible, privileged, and well-protected by his station, ruthlessly coordinates a diabolical attack, a slaughter disguised as a domestic terror assault. Deep in the core of MI5, a traitor, misuses, redirects and controls official resources. Manipulating a group of cowards, rapists, murderers, and virulent racists culled from the ranks of the English Defense League, the aristocrat and the traitor aim to throw England into a state of xenophobic frenzy. Only two men stand a chance of stopping their fanatical plot. One is a victim of state-sponsored madness twice over, a humble Egyptian cab driver who brought his family to England in search of a better life. Aalim is meant to be a scapegoat for the actions of his captors, a “rag-head” who can be made to take the blame for their actions lest his innocent wife and son, taken hostage, suffer a terrible fate. The other, Wilson, is a crotchety intelligence analyst. An iconoclastic workaholic, rapidly losing patience with his superiors’ political gamesmanship, Wilson relies on his own brand of intelligence analysis when one of the plotters makes the attack personal and when one of his closest friends at MI5 pays the ultimate price for discovering too much. Can Aalim’s faith and humanity overcome his fear of the monsters keeping his family captive? And can Wilson overcome the Bad Analysis that infests a system that, from the very beginning, was set against him?

    About the Author
Colin Knight was born in Manchester, England to working class parents – his father painted houses and drove delivery trucks; his mother worked in a retirement home. He and his four siblings shared a small three-bedroom house on an unremarkable city owned housing estate ten miles from the city centre. From seven to sixteen years old, he held newspaper and milk delivery jobs, which he did, before school. Educated to state standards, at an experimental public high-school for boys, Colin graduated at sixteen with minimum credentials. At eighteen, he joined an American international company as a general office helper. By twenty-three Colin had developed an aptitude for product management and marketing. His career with the American company provided work assignments in Italy and Switzerland, as well as travel to many European countries. In 1987, Colin immigrated to Canada to work for a distributor of the American company. In 1991, he took a chance and quit work to attend university. By 1997, Colin had obtained a BA Honors Degree in Political Science, and a MA Degree in International Relations. In 1999, after a brief return to the private sector, Colin joined the Canadian Federal Government. During his fifteen-year government career, Colin worked for the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Canadian International Development Agency, the Public Safety Department, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, and most recently, he was a Senior Policy Analyst in the Federal Privy Council Office. Government work and assignments took Colin to Europe, Asia, Latin America and the US. Colin retired from the government in 2014 to focus on family, writing and life. Colin lives in Ottawa, Canada with his wife and their three children. In between housework, groceries, shuttling children and general family support, Colin is working on his next novel. Squash, soccer, learning to play the guitar, and quality beer relieve stress and writers block.

Knight's newest work, Bad Analysis, provides an inside look at the machinations of the bureaucracy as institutions established to protect and serve display the most pungent characteristics of modern bureaucracies, empire building and cronyism, while contending with an imminent threat. Set with an international plot, the would be hero struggles to piece together events from across an ocean orchestrated by a villian that will make you grind your teeth with distaste. Fast paced and action filled...make it a movie now!

Craig Wilson is an analyst with Canada's Integrated Terrorism Center
Morris Marshall is the head of the English Defense League, a radical right wing racist organization.
Anthony Mitton-Wells is a highly respected, wealthy, fanatical, domestic terrorist.

My impressions: terrifying, possible, fanatics, high placed domestic terrorist, despicable thugs.

It took a while for me to get into this plot, but then I was engrossed to the end. I even stayed up past midnight to finish it. Racist hatred is the central theme and manipulation of the losers at the bottom of the economy is the means of implementing a major act of violence to rid England of all immigrants, especially Muslims.
Of course, it takes a sick minded but intelligent, wealthy, high placed person or small group of people to put an outrageous plan like this in action, so we have the upper and lower classes uniting in an evil plot.

Craig Wilson is the experienced and respected analyst who has a bureaucrat for a boss instead of a professional who has advanced through the organization gaining a background in what Craig is most proficient at.
The guts of the story lays out Craig's fears of terrorist slipping through their nets due to bad analysis of available information or management's inept, micromanagement of his conclusions. Craig's fears soon prove to be real and he has to put his career on the line to force people above him to listen before thousands of victims are injured or killed.

The plot is well thought out and maintains intensity from start to finish.

The flaws are that internal thoughts need to be in italics, and there are occasional common editing errors. If those issues don't turn you off the story gets a 5 star rating based on the strong intense plot. If perfect editing is a must for you, knock the rating down a bit.

    Smart Guys Rule
    By Zippergirl
"Evil prevails when good men fail to act."

Bad analysis--woe to the innocents. Craig Wilson knows any number of things can contribute to a successful terrorist attack: weak intelligence, misaligned resources, personality conflicts, even a misspelled name, but his greatest fear is bad analysis. As a senior analyst on an international risk assessment team he takes a low tech approach when correlating incoming data; a white board and magic markers. Scorn he can handle, as long as he gets it right.

Money and new members are suddenly pouring into the English Defense League, an anti-Muslim protest movement supported by both soccer hooligans and blue bloods. When MI5 fails to issue an alert, red flags start Wilson's calculating mind racing. Under direct orders to end his investigation, he knows the clock is ticking, and it's up to him to neutralize the threat of thousands of deaths and casualties.

Intelligent, without being overtly intellectual, Bad Analysis deconstructs xenophobia. And it's a damn fine conspiracy thriller, to boot.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

    BOOK REVIEW.....
The story was intriguing. I really liked the ending twist. Didn't see it coming at all. It posed and interesting question. If you could have someone you loved back from the dead by means of artificial life would you take it?

AUDIO REVIEW......Mr Lingane is both the author and narrator for the story. He does a fairly good job of narrating his story and bring life to it. The only thing negative about it I found was that he read it way to fast. He needs to slow it down some. Especially during action scenes. He was a little hard to follow at times. But over all it was good

"A Strangely Cool and Unique Short Story"
    By Teresa
NT-5: A SHORT STORY was pretty interesting. I like this style of audiobook with some sound effects. The story was very creative as well. I thought it was pretty neat and especially knowing Mark Lingane did the whole thing himself. He's the author and narrator. I'd be interested in hearing more. This was pretty action-packed for being only 39 minutes long.

MARK LINGANE as the narrator was pretty good. He has a good vocal range and I liked his fast-pace. Along with Sergeant Delaney, he also did a good female character. For me it was easier to keep up with the story at the pace it was due to the style.
