Another eclectic adventure with Vic Challenger!
By Rae Phillips
This is the fourth book in the series and is an excellent edition to a collection of books that are always fast paced and fun. The book cover perfectly encapsulates the writing style of the author and if you are looking for a read that is a little bit different then this is for you. It is an eclectic mix of characters and situations with an exciting narrative style and is an absolute must for comic books fans.

Each of the books in this series stand alone and can be enjoyed without have read any of the other stories. I love the fact that there is a love story that weaves its way through all of the Vic Challenger series; it is a thread that holds all of the books together and adds depth to Vic’s character. Vic is not just a woman, she was a primeval warrior that is seeking to be reunited with her eternal love and this gives her an almost infallible presence through each book. The author is an accomplished storyteller; Terror Incognito like all the books in the series is written well and has excellent attention to detail and stunning visual descriptions.

Reading through these adventures takes me back to reading Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys as a child; I could not wait to get to the library when I finished each one so that I could take out the next story. I would become totally absorbed in those adventures and it is one of my earliest memories of loving reading and books. Then I read that Nancy Drew was an influence on Jerry Gill’s writing styles and right there is my connection! We all need a bit of escapism and a heroine like Vic Challenger in our lives from time to time!

I would love to see a Vic Challenger Anime series; I think it would be astounding. To try and place this series in a genre is difficult it crosses so many from fantasy, suspense, historical fiction and comic books. One thing is for sure the Vic Challenger collection is 100% originality!

Fantastic series, just keeps getting better
By Kitty Smith
Another fast paced adventure in the Vic series! Vic and Lin Li's adventures are wildly entertaining and there's plenty of surprises along the way. What starts out as a fun, danger-free trip quickly turns into something they never imagined. Vic is a great character, strong and smart and able to take on the world. There's some unexpected drama here that affects the relationship between Vic and Lin Li, adding a bit of suspense to the story.

I really love how the skillful writing makes the story come alive The landscape, the animals and other characters, even the bugs spring to life as you read along. Such a creative story, and it's great how the book is part of a series but perfectly capable of standing on its own. Fantastic series and I hope there are many more books to come!

Fast-paced adventure that must be read
By K. Smith
I just can’t get enough of Jerry Gill’s Vic book series. With Vic: Terror Incognita, I was treated a fourth time to the wild travels of Vic(toria) Custer and Lin Li. With every paragraph, you will wish you lived in the 1920s like they do. But we just have to settle for reading about the exploits of the female answer to Indiana Jones—happily settle.

If you aren’t familiar with the outrageous love story of Vic’s 100,000-year-old former self Nat-ul and cave dweller Nu, you need not worry. Each book in The Incredible Adventures of Vic Challenger is filled with backstory on the two lovers. This fourth installment finds Vic and her longtime friend Lin trekking across the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil. After a deadly fight with a 20-foot, 300 lb. anaconda, they take Instagram-worthy pictures of it before roasting the snake with mushrooms for dinner. Can you say ‘girl power’?

Their friendship is tested as Vic continues to wonder about Stu James--who may be the reincarnation of Nu. But they continue to push forward while more antics ensue. Along with a host of various creatures and characters, we learn about the endurance of these heroines. “Lin and I are adventure writers. We need to do things on our own and a little more dangerous than we would ever suggest for our readers. It keeps them reading. It’s our living.” That’s what these heroines encounter for the art of writing. That’s the thrill that Jerry Gill gives his readers with this latest book.

Unique Characters and Fast Pace!
By James L
Glenn and Macco is a tale of two friends (owner and humanish turtle pet that can fly) lost in space. In this space adventure they meet golems, goblins, and other beings. They are searching for creatures like themselves. Some of the positives of this book is that the characters are interesting and the pace moves quick. However, with the version I read, there are some formatting issues. I tried to expand/shrink the font on my Kindle Cloud Reader, but that didn't seem to help. The story is fun to read, but you have to make sure to gloss over any formatting/spelling issues. I am looking forward to the next installment of Glenn and Macco!

Okay
By Brian Wilson
I like the idea behind the book and I think it's interesting the inter species relationship. The author explores a very complicated genre and does a good job with this book. Glenn and Macco's adventures are engaging because they have both a youthful feel as well as a logical side to it. But I have to say that this book is badly written and one would put it away if they have little patience. But it is an okay read overall.

even in a fantastic manner. This book want to read
By Angelina Lisitskaya
Enough interesting book. The theme of post-apocalyptic existence is very popular in recent years, and the author just shows his version of events, even in a fantastic manner. This book want to read, because I want to know: is there a more intelligent life on the planet, what will happen to the main characters in the mysterious east. Overall, I liked the book!

FUN DEBUT NOVEL - HIGH RECOMMEND
By Hellekson & Nailsson
Here's the deal. Amazon has allowed anyone with some free time and a desire to write, a platform to sell their ideas. The quality of these stories vary from outstanding to poor...at about the same ratio as those writers with publishing deals...as a guy who reads a lot, I love the trend...I love reading new material from new writers...enter Joseph Rubas and his (I'm guessing) first work, "The Shapshifter."
It's a quick read that I thoroughly enjoyed. The prose are snappy and clear...the internal dialog of the sheriff was quite funny...good use of tension, almost noir(ish) in tone...and the thrills are darn good for a novice writer(which is why I'm giving it 5 stars)...for me, Joseph does a great job at creating believable characters...look forward to more books.

Great Story But Could Be Better
By Dawnzilla
Harlow, Montana is a sleepy little town where everyone knows everyone else and nothing exciting ever happens. However, one day a woman is attacked in her mobile home, by someone she claims is her dead father. The town becomes fearful as the attacks increase.

The Shapeshifter is a "monster" from Native American folklore that changes form to become what its victims fear most. Some of the people who lived to talk about their attacks described being hunted or stalked by Chucky, Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger.

I absolutely loved this story, but gave it three stars due to formatting issues, numerous typos, and an ending that was a little too rushed for my liking. Sentences like "But I don't there was" and ""Shades drew, the residents of Harlow settled in for a long, uncertain night" completely removed me from the story. With a little editing, this has the potential of being a fantastic tale.

Solid debut
By C. Clark
I thought this was a really fun read - reminiscent of some of the great early X Files episodes, with a bit of a sharper and darker edge to it. Rubas does a great job establishing tension throughout the story and presents a well thought out mystery that offers a few surprises and twists. The main characters in the story had interesting and unique textures to them, and I thought they all lent a solid support system to the narrative. Rubas has a good narrative voice that I found engaging and unique. My main complaint, and the reason why I ultimately gave this three stars instead of four, is that I thought the ending felt a little rushed and I would have liked to have seen maybe a few more chapters. Other than that, great debut from an exciting and fresh author.

I was given a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

About the Author
With a poet’s temperament and gypsy’s feet, I have lived my life with a smile and a song. I have been a cowboy, a carpenter, a cross-country ski bum and a back-roads vagabond. I’ve sipped chilled champagne on sleek jets, downed Rum on the wooden decks of Sailboats, and drank warm beer in ragged jungles. I have slept with angels, danced with devils, broken rules, bones, and the occasional heart. Just finished a one-sitting read of book two, and find myself invested in the outcome! For a three-volume set, this story moves along at a brisk pace, with surprises at every turn, and this second volume seems to increase the pace to the point where I'm begging Mr. Denver Davis to send me an advance copy of the third book so I can have some resolution!! Well Done, and please......MORE TELLER!

Excellent writing for first time published novel
By glensan
Can't wait for volume 3. Excellent writing for first time published novel. The story captures you just a few chapters into the first book, and the chapters are not long, so you can put down the book at anytime to take a break. BUT then it draws you back quickly in anticipation of what happens next. Many interesting characters, and Denver weaves them all together flawlessly. A very realistic plot, and good character development. Highly entertaining.

From the Author
This story has been a long time in the making: the path an odd and winding one. But through it all, Leeth, Harmon, and the world they inhabit has stayed remarkably consistent. From the first, pencil-on-paper draft in my (tiny, I'm told) lettering, to typing it up laboriously onto my first Linux PC (in troff/mm), making it to a finalist in the inaugural George Turner Contest way back in 1998, languishing for years as I submitted it to traditional publishers, and hearing not even an acknowledgement of receipt...

It wasn't until after my wife died, and I and a bunch of other people were made redundant from Canon's Australian R&D organization, that I thought maybe now would be the time to see what I could do: after all, when I looked around, it did seem like the whole book publishing ecosystem had changed.

"Why not self-publish it?" I asked myself.

At that stage, I thought it would probably take me a few months to learn what I need to know (hah! try 12 months, and counting!). And I also thought it would only take me a few months to get it ready - hadn't I been polishing and improving it for 20 years, after all?Well, discovering @ThEditors, and having a professional and insightful expert look over it... as one reviewer has said "the difference is amazing".

All this applies to all first three books, all of which are in the pipeline. Stay tuned!

About the Author
L. J. Kendall failed to drown on five separate occasions on Sydney's northern beaches. He worked in the IT R&D field while extremely happily married for 30 years to an adventurous mediaeval scholar 22 years his senior until her death in December, 2014. Leeth's story has been 25 years in the making.

Something new and intriguing!
By BarbarinaS
If you are looking for something new and a little different to read then Wild Thing by Australian author L.J. Kendall might be worth a try. The novel is multi-dimensional with its genres blending elements of urban, paranormal and fantasy and offering some interesting insight into a world where magic and technology rule but at the cost of what matters most in life.

World-building has been very cleverly and imaginatively created. It is well-thought out making it easier to suspend our disbelief. Somehow in this world technology and magic prevail to override ethics and morals or if not override then perhaps shape things to suit selfish beliefs and needs. There is pause to consider that it is what we do that creates the problem and this concept is presented with a fresh and original take in a market place overflowing in dysfunctional societies. It helps when a book is extremely well-written and the use of descriptive language excellent. Images are cold and cruel and even brutal.

Our heroine is a strange mixture of child and chilling adult. It brings to mind an old argument. Genetics battle environment when assumptions are made about Sara and we have to wonder what may have happened if she had been surrounded by different factors, her original environment with a loving family. Instead Sara is raised or rather manipulated into adulthood to suit an arrogant idea of what Alex thinks should be. Is he our hero or our villain? Does he intentionally create a monster? Is she a real monster in every sense of the word if her choices were not quite her own because the right guidance was denied? Who decides what the right guidance is? That is a question that may take many books to find out and though the characters are not particularly likeable they are intriguing. The desire to know more is definitely present and bodes well for future publication.

If I was to make a criticism it would be that I found the book a little too long given that it is a series. There were sections we probably could have done without allowing a stronger and faster connection to the events for the reader. Often the slow and lengthy pace takes away from the effect of the action and the action in this is important. In fact it is critical because the connection to the character is not an easy one to make. I believe it to be a real challenge for the author to do just that but I have a feeling it can be done. In any case it is a hook into the next book.

A series to watch and well worth the effort!

What's the word I'm looking for?
By Kindle Customer
Intriguing, thought provoking, disturbing, probably those and more. I would say normally this book would have made me stop reading about the time she turned 12-14 based on what the "good" doctor started adjusting. I kept reading hoping that it was not going to be the case, although how it turned out is both worse and better than I expected. I know for a story to be good it must have certain elements. An example, make the reader think, make the reader continue despite how the book is going, make the reader connect with the characters good or bad. This author certainty delivered in that regard. The world is such a dark place right now that I have been working harder than normal looking for happy feel good books, and this definitely not one of those. I still couldn't stop reading it, and I do want to see if "wild thing" actually develops and matures and realizes the things that have been done to her and whether because of those things can she overcome the conditioning she has been subject to, maybe never to be a normal person but a least someone that is not "yep" I want to say, but again I am trying really hard not to give the book away. I also would not want to be in the shoes of those she considers to have wronged her either if the author allows her to find out. This issue is more complex than that as you will find in the book, but as in most things love is just the opposite of hate. I am very confused by the start of the book and the shaman and people that sent a child into the world to become the very thing they feared she would be, although I may have a slight idea of whom everyone was so afraid of from the first part of the book, time will tell. I am being very careful not to be a "spoiler" but give you some idea that the book is different than anything I have read that is isn't a murder mystery, psycho killer/profiler type of book. That is not the case here but some of the same mind bending is part of the book. That is the best way I can describe it. I will say that "wild thing" and this may be the reason, and again time will tell, but she seems to have stopped developing mentally at times and seems very child like based on how the story is going, and that is really disturbing. Again I am hoping in the next book, she starts developing and growing more, otherwise I know I won't be able to continue to read it because that and some of the other things that have occurred really bug me and ick me out. Not a great word but there you go. So to the author the first book was really good, and very few if any errors. Very confusing at times, and I am not sure where you are going in the story at times, but again that is a sign of a very good book.

Creation of a Huntress
By K. Cheung
This book has an intriguing premise. Suppose you take a child and make her an experimental subject, moulding her in a particular direction over years of training. Suppose her teacher has magical abilities (and a moral deficit) that allow him to subtly alter her neurological make-up towards this end. And suppose you do this in the surreal atmosphere of an Institution for paranormal dysfunction. What would this girl become?

Warning – this review may contain spoilers

This semi-dystopian fantasy is set in a future in which society is rebuilding after mage-powered storms and a plague, and in which some choose to alter themselves with animal DNA and mind-altering drugs. The girl Sara knows little of this, having been kept secluded by her adopted ‘Uncle’, Doctor Harmon. Within the Institute’s vast grounds, she grows up a wild thing, a huntress. Here she befriends a cybernetic guard dog and learns to feel the spirits of nature and others less friendly.

It’s not long before the girl is exploring the hidden depths of the Institute, drawn to one particular man, claimed to be an insane mage. Her wilful and resourceful nature find her defying layers of security to defend him. But thanks to Harmon’s meddling, Sara herself has become dangerous, displaying a disturbing and uncontrollable mix of naivety and power.

This is a fascinating story, by turns exciting and disturbing, as the reader follows Sara’s development from wild child to adulthood. If I have a criticism, it is that the plot development was overly long and drawn-out. In particular, I felt too many chapters were spent following Sara around the grounds and on a needlessly large number of attempts to assist the incarcerated mage, which reduced my surprise and excitement at the finale. It’s a shame because in other respects this is a fine first novel.

I’d recommend Luke Kendall as a new author to watch.

''The reason Verne is still read by millions today is simply that he was one of the best storytellers who ever lived.'' --Arthur C. Clarke, author of 2001: A Space Odyssey

''AudioFile Golden Voice Simon Prebble delivers Jules Verne's classic adventure fantasy with masterful precision . . . Prebble's powerful narration captures the excitement of dangerous encounters along the way, such as prehistoric animals, falling rocks, and molten lava. This classic treasure was written 144 years ago. Prebble's perceptive narration brings Verne's work to life. Review
"In 1864 Jules Verne published 'Journey to the Center of the Earth,' the charming narrative of the adventures of a party of three, led by a German professor of mineralogy - the irascible mad-scientist type - who have lowered themselves into an extinct volcanic crater."

    Review
"The professor has a nephew; he's his research partner. They have this theory, he's slightly mad but they must go and find out [if it is true]. Actual classic mythology has said that Mt. Sneffels [a volcano with a glacier covering its summit in western Iceland] is a portal to the center of the earth."

    Different Versions?
    By Susie Day
Yes there are different versions, The best one is the original in French. There are more than one translations into english, one with the Main character's name as Harry, the other as Axel.

I read the 'Harry' version first, but only partway through as it was terrible! I thought Verne was a bad writter or something. But, when I was older, I found another copy (Puffin Classics btw), and I thought I'd give it another go. That was one of the best books I had ever read, it funny and imaginative. The characters even had character!

Well, I looked into it, and compared my new version with the first book I had read and both of them with the original. Mine was pretty close. The names were kept the same, most of the sentences were similar in structure (so that someone like me who can't read french could tell that they were the same book).

The 'Harry version' however, invented entire chapters out of thin air, discarded others and changed significant plot points. I hope this helps some of you decide which one to get, and that there is more than one translation.

    If the book starts with:

"ON 24 May 1863, a Sunday, my uncle, Professor Lidenbrock, came rushing back towards his little house at No.19 Konigstrasse, one of the oldest streets..."

You know you have the good version.

Otherwise, I love this book and would recomend it to anyone, whether a science fiction fan or not.

PENGUIN/PUFFIN EDITION: A particularly good, modern translation
    By Librarian
[NOTE: Although written for the Penguin/Puffin edition, this review may be attached to other editions as well. If so, much of its information is still pertinent.]

This Penguin/Puffin Classics translation (by Robert Baldick) of Verne's wonderful book is absolutely terrific. It is accurate and fun to read. (Sample it to see for yourself.) Of course, readers must make allowances for the book's old-fashioned content and style, and inevitably some (unable to do so) may feel it is too descriptive or that the plot advances too slowly. Hopefully others will find it quaint but exciting, its fabulous descriptions to be marveled at as they vicariously travel with the main characters on a once-in-a-lifetime journey deep inside the earth. Fanciful? Yes. Fun? Definitely. Memorable? Forever.

Any true translation (such as in this Puffin Classic) rightly identifies the professor as "Lidenbrock" or "Liedenbrock" NOT as "Hardwigg," and his young partner as "Axel" NOT "Harry." (That is how you can easily distinguish the real vs. a false, anonymous translation that, sadly, is still being sold as if it were the real thing; it isn't even a translation but an adaptation, a total rewrite with different names of characters and numerous plot alterations.) The extent of the problem and confusion becomes obvious when one reads the many reviews associated with this and other editions of this title; notice how many refer to Hardwigg and Harry. Sadly, these people, praising the bogus version as if it were Verne's, have not read the real thing. Don't YOU be fooled.

This very sound Baldick translation comes as close (in English) to what Verne actually wrote (in French) to tell his story. The old F.A. Malleson translation also gets it right, but in modern times two translations particularly stand out: this one one by Robert Baldick and one by William Butcher. They are both good, the difference mainly being a matter of style. Some prefer Butcher; I happen to prefer Baldick.

Don't let the fact that Baldick's translation here appears in a children's imprint deter you from considering it; this is not a simplified "kiddy" version. It appeared first in 1965 as an adult Penguin book, and twenty years later (unchanged) as a Puffin book, and now as an ebook. Butcher's is more recent and, as he is a noted Verne scholar, his credentials certainly carry weight. But that doesn't necessarily make him a better wordsmith. We read Verne primarily for fun and for the thrill of adventure. Baldick's translation enables us to do just that.

I highly recommend Baldick's translation in this Puffin edition to anyone, child or adult, especially since its relatively low price is remarkably enticing for a copyrighted, modern translaton rather than an old, public domain one. But whichever edition of this wonderful novel you may be considering for purchase, and no matter who translates it, give it the Lidenbrock & Axel (READ it) vs. Hardwigg & Harry (AVOID it) test to be certain you are reading the actual story Verne intended.

NOTE: If price is an issue, you may wish to consider the aforementoned, sound, older translation by Malleson; it can be obtained as a public domain freebie in the Kindle store by searching under: "free books verne voyage au centre de la terre. English." (The OTHER public domain freebie version is under "free books verne journey to the center of the earth" and is the FALSE one. If you wish, download both freebies and compare; the differences are obvious.)

    Verne's most thrilling novel
    By Daniel Jolley
This book proves Verne's greatness as a writer of fiction. The science in this science fiction flies largely in the face of modern science, yet the read is no less gripping today than it was in its infancy. The story is pretty simple. Professor Lidenbrock, a neurotically impatient scientist, discovers a cryptic manuscript written by a long-dead explorer; with the help of his nephew, he decodes the cryptogram to read an account of a journey to the center of the earth begun beneath a dormant volcano in Iceland. The nephew, Axel, a talented geologist and mineralogist himself, refuses to believe that the core of the earth is not exceedingly hot; additionally, he cares more about Grauben, the eccentric professor's ward, than risking his life on a scientific adventure. He proves unable to dissuade his uncle and thus joins with him on a journey to Iceland. There, they hire a stoic Icelander to lead them down into the earth. Most of the action takes place underground, with the adventurers suffering several trials, daring risks, and finally discovering a whole new world hidden miles below the earth's crust. The ultimate trial and danger they face consists of returning to the surface.
Axel narrates the story, and the strength of the novel lies in his character. The professor and the Icelandic guide are unusual personalities, but Axel is very real and easy to relate to. He really does not want to go in the first place, and he is most liable to greet dangers and risks by bemoaning his fate and declaring his party done for in their foolish efforts. It is he who suffers the most privation when the men's water runs out, and it is he who finds himself lost in the utter blackness of the caverns for three days. When things are going well, though, Axel becomes wildly excited about the mission and temporarily forgets about his fears. This all goes to make him a very sympathetic character. Without him, the story would be a rather dispassionate account of an impossible journey by bland, unbelievable characters. You do have to shift your mind into low gear a few times when the characters begin speaking about the different types of minerals and rocks they are encountering, but overall the plot is rather thrilling, and you cannot help but begin early on trying to ascertain a way in which the intrepid explorers can return to share their discoveries with a skeptical scientific community. Verne knows how to tell a story, and you don't have to know a single thing about science to enjoy this novel immensely.

  • The Panhandle was a lonely purple range land, unfenced and wind swept. Bill Smith, cattleman, threw up a cabin and looked at the future with hopeful eyes. One day while plowing almost out of sight of his little home - which that morning he had left apprehensively owing to an impending event - he espied his wife Margaret coming along the edge of the plowed field. She had brought his lunch this day, despite his order to the contrary. Bill dropped the loop of his driving reins over the plow handle and strode toward her. Presently she halted wearily and sat down where the dark rich overturned earth met the line of bleached grass. Bill meant to scold Margaret for bringing his lunch, but it developed she had brought him something more. A son!

    By Captain Monroe
I have always been a fan of Zane Grey, his writing style that is amazing. The descriptions he uses makes you feel like you are actually there. If you are looking for good westerns combined with romance, his books are the way to go! I have never read one of his books that I didn't like.

    A great western read
    By Del W. Gardner
This was an excellent cowboy book! I purchased it for my Kindle and enjoyed it from start to finish. Being a book published many years ago, I was happy with the way they put curse words as ____________. Fill in the blank, which I didn't have to do..... just knew an expletive could be used. If they'd only do that now-a-days, but perhaps then books might be more ____________ than real words. I highly recommend this book. Thank you.

    Valley of Wild Horses
    By John W
Written in the style of yester-year, but exciting and interesting. If you enjoy the old west, the feeling of exploring new territory, people's, and horses, you'll love this book. The writer has a good knowledge of horses, people, history, and the advance of people across the old west.

A fine book made availible on Kindle free books.
