From Publishers Weekly
The death of King William II in a hunting accident serves as the convergence point for several satisfying plot lines in Anand's ( To a Native Shore ) fifth historical novel. After William Rufus, eldest of William the Conqueror's three sons, succeeds his father in 1087, royal siblings Henry and Robert (called Curthose) shift through various turbulent alliances as each conspires to wrest the throne for himself. The King ignores entreaties to marry Edith of Scotland and produce a successor; instead, he takes as a lover the skilled Norman rider and huntsman, Ralph des Aix. Although reluctant to enter into the relationship, Ralph nonetheless learns to care deeply for the King while he counts the days until he gains his promised knighthood and manor, and the freedom to establish his own family. When he becomes head of the manor at Chenna's Tun and weds beautiful, rebellious Sybil of Fallowdene, Ralph is drawn to the ancient pagan woodland rites and relishes his role as King of the Wood during Beltane's (May Day) carnal revelries in his woodland--where the fated regicide occurs. Betrayal, violation and eventual acquiescence to circumstance overlap imaginatively in this complex novel in which two kinds of kingship, each shadowed by compelling but proscribed practices, provide an effective dual theme.

From Library Journal
In A.D. 1000 King William Rufus, son of William the Conqueror, was killed during a hunt. Although no one knows who shot the fatal arrow, Anand provides an intriguing story of what might have been. William Rufus faced opposition from his two brothers and numerous lords under his dominion in England and France. He drew the condemnation of Church authorities for his homosexual liaisons. He ignored the grievances of his impoverished subjects, many of whom continued to practice ancient fertility rituals in the hope of improving their economic lot. Anand pulls seemingly unrelated subplots tighter and tighter as the novel progresses, drawing the principal characters together to the fateful day of the king's death. In the process she masterfully re-creates the chaos and passion of a turbulent time.

Review
In the end the memory that will linger is one from England: a capricious, unpopular monarch who went his own way, feeding his appetites rather than the nation's good. Indeed history judges him harshly but William Rufus wasn't the first or the worst, although, in the hands of Valerie Anand, he's definitely one of the most interesting. (The Bookbag)

Fealty vs. Honor in Medieval England!
By Kimberly Gelderman
This is the tale of Ralph de Aix of Normandy and of William Rufus-King of England. Ralph is a huntsman who desires knighthood and eventually lands of his own. He finds he cannot achieve his goal anytime soon in Normandy with his present lord and decides to look elsewhere for advancement. Advancement comes in the shape and guise of William Rufus, son of William the Bastard of Normandy. Ralph really cares about Rufus, on a genuine level of friendship, but is willing to do what it takes to succeed at court. Rufus, not known for normal "appetites" is attracted to Ralph and their strange relationship begins. Ralph endures Rufus in the hope of being granted lands after knighthood.
A run down Chenna's Tun is his "reward" for "services rendered." However, he tries to make a go of it and with current knowledge of the god Herne, becomes involved in the Saxon cult where he becomes a "lord" in his own right. There is much action and mystery involved in his life but not much money. He wants a wife and in time finds one who is, in the beginning, reluctant to leave her childhood home. As time goes on, things do not improve. Weather and health disasters are a never ending concern and many people hunt the "royal deer" in order not to starve. This brings about the most important role Ralph will ever play in his life, starring Rufus and Rufus' younger brother Count Henry, soon to become King Henry I of England.
Medieval life is brought realistically back to life as is a lessor known religious cult. Anand's style of writing keeps the reader emeshed in a life of intrigue, mystery, danger, and scandal, in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries. Many of her novels are out-of-print but are well worth the search! They transport the reader back into time.

Who did kill William Rufus of England?
By Misfit
Ralph de Aix is a younger son who strikes out from Normandy to England with hopes of better advancement in his talents as a huntsman and horseman. Eventually Ralph attracts the attention of William Rufus, King of England, and Ralph is willing to use that attraction to advance his prospects as a courtier. I do give the author credit for tactfully handling Rufus' unusual "activities" in the bedroom, and Ralph's mixed feelings about his relationship with Rufus and his relief when he is freed from it and able to return to more normal relationships with women.

Eventually William gives Ralph some land at Chenna's Tun in the New Forest, and he brings his young bride Sybil to live with him there. Ralph is quickly drawn in to his Saxon tenant's ancient worship in the forest, and William's ambitious younger brother uses his knowledge of Ralph's activities to force him into committing a heinous deed.

This is top rate, well written historical fiction. The author does take her time in building her characters, and things really didn't start cooking until about page 300 or so as Ralph realizes that Herne, the ancient God of the Wood has chosen the ultimate sacrifice to The King of The Wood. Some readers who need action packed excitement on every page might find some of this book a bit dull, but I loved every minute of it, especially involving "The King of the Wood" in the still mysterious death of William Rufus. Five stars.

Interesting Tale of an Interesting Time
By Miranda Good
This very readable novel offers an inventive answer to the old mystery of Who Killed William II? None of the previous works of historical fiction I have encounted dealt with this particular time in English history, namely the reign of William Rufus, homosexual son of William the Conqueror, who assumed the crown on his father's death. The author has deftly interwoven story lines of numerous persons, fictional and historical, who had motive to do in Rufus. Her solution to this historical whodunit is quite original as well as feasible. Anand's investigation of the ancient pagan rites of Beltane and the "King of the Wood" is fascinating and meshes seamlessly with the factual part of her narrative. Rich in historical and cultural detail, this is a quick read which gets better and better as the tale unfolds. The multitude of personalities in play is initially a bit confusing, but who's who becomes clearer as the story progresses. Well written, original and fast-paced, this is a great choice for lovers of historical fiction.

Excellent satire
By Patricia
This is a tale of an übernerd, a bunch of überbureaucrats, and several überorganizations - government, private, and secret - and the madness of each. When all get into play at the same time it becomes mayhem.
Mike, the brain, is constantly experimenting with time/space connections. That he comes up with a propellant design that could eliminate the need for other fuels (fossil and nuclear alike) is not very important to him but the rest of the world is shaken to its roots. The Agents of Karnage, a terrorist group focused on creating chaos, is commissioned by the forces making billions on oil to get rid of Mike and his discovery. The Sovereign Union of Vagabonds, an anarchy advocate, sets out to protect him, and the National Institute of Science and Technology, a government agency (yes, Science, not Standards) wants to co-opt Mike, voluntarily or against his will - it makes no difference to them - because some of his experiments have temporarily slowed down time.
Shake all that up, or stir it if you prefer, and you have murder, sex, science, and a look at who we all are through an amusement park mirror.

Didn't really flow
By Billingham Matthew
It was ok-ish, but it didn't really come up to proper climax. Rather bitty I felt, and I didn't sympathise with, or get to know any of the characters. Not much depth. Some nice ideas, so a two star rather than one.

No action

I liked the premise of the book - new source of energy, but the book had no action. I felt it was a sci-fi version of Dilbert.

  • Women in Love is a novel by British author D. H. Lawrence published in 1920. It is a sequel to his earlier novel The Rainbow (1915), and follows the continuing loves and lives of the Brangwen sisters, Gudrun and Ursula. Gudrun Brangwen, an artist, pursues a destructive relationship with Gerald Crich, an industrialist. Lawrence contrasts this pair with the love that develops between Ursula and Rupert Birkin, an alienated intellectual who articulates many opinions associated with the author. The emotional relationships thus established are given further depth and tension by an intense psychological and physical attraction between Gerald and Rupert. The novel ranges over the whole of British society before the time of the First World War and eventually ends high up in the snows of the Tyrolean Alps. Ursula's character draws on Lawrence's wife Frieda, and Gudrun on Katherine Mansfield, while Rupert Birkin has elements of Lawrence himself, and Gerald Crich of Mansfield's husband, John Middleton Murry.

    From Library Journal
The published editions of Women in Love , probably Lawrence's greatest novel, have always been remarkably corrupt due to a lengthy, complex process of revision and transcription, a threatened libel suit, and numerous unauthorized bowdlerizations. The editors of this new Cambridge Edition have labored scrupulously to produce an authoritative text. What emerges, if not dramatically different, is fresher and more immediate. The introduction provides a valuable history of the novel's composition, revision, publication, and reception, and though the elaborate textual apparatus is strictly for advanced students of bibliography, the notes are splendid. Lawrence's 1919 Foreword and two early discarded chapters are also included. The recovery of a modern classic. Keith Cushman, Univ. of North Carolina, Greensboro

    Emotionally Intense
    By C. Fletcher
I think Women in Love must be just about the most emotionally intense book I've ever read. D.H. Lawrence conjures his four main characters in what feels like the heat of a closed-room kiln. The writing is beautiful and amazingly perceptive, but is at times stultifyingly over-analytical.
Yet, despite the book's combined length, density and decided lack of plot, Women in Love is surprisingly readable. What makes this book so good is the honesty with which Lawrence imbues his two title characters, Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen, and their two chosen lovers, Birkin and Gerald. It can be frustrating to read page after page of the mental thrashings of an individual mind's search for truth and authenticity in life and in love, but it can also be a kind of revelation.
These characters think differently about the world around them than I do, and we each think differently about the world than you who are reading this do. And yet we are all basically the same on a certain transcendent level. We are all human and we all long for an authentic connection with the world around us. We are different and we are the same. That's why living in this world isn't always easy, and that's why it's always worthwhile. This book beautifully and even entertainingly captures those basic struggles for human connection and if for that reason alone, it's well worth reading. Highly recommended.

"I think I am in love with the void."
    By Mary Whipple
Written in 1920 and often regarded as D. H. Lawrence's greatest novel, Women in Love is the complex story of two women and two men who scrutinize their lives and personal needs in an effort to discover something that makes the future worth living. The personal and social traumas of post-World War I, combined with the rise of industry and urbanization, have affected all four main characters, often at cross purposes as they explore love and its role in their lives. Intensely introspective and self-conscious, each character shares his/her thoughts with the reader, allowing the reader to participate in the inner conflicts and crises that each faces.

Ursula Brangwen, a teacher in a mining town in the Midlands, is attracted to Rupert Birkin, a school supervisor; her sister Gudrun, an artist whose sculptures have drawn some attention in London, is drawn to Gerald Crich, whose father is a mine owner. As the two women earn their living and consider the issue of marriage, which they regard as an impediment to their independence, the men deal with issues of sexuality and power, and whether the love of a woman is enough. Both men have homosexual urges which compete with their feelings for women.

Gerald is the most conflicted of the four. Taking over the mines upon the death of his father, he is fiercely committed to making them successful, even if that means hardening his heart toward his workers. He feels no sense of responsibility toward them, dedicating his efforts toward success and power, an attitude he conveys also toward Gudrun, who finds him self-centered but physically attractive. Rupert Birkin, who is eventually drawn to Ursula, is often thought to have been modeled on Lawrence himself, and his sensitivity, self-analysis, and feeling that love is not enough--that one must progress beyond love to another plane--display the kind of agonized soul searching done by many other young men of his age following the horrors of the world war.

Extremely complex in its exploration of the period's social and philosophical influences on the characters (who are archetypes of society), the novel is also full of symbolism, with many parallels drawn between love and death, which the characters sometimes prefer to life. As the love affairs of these four characters play out, filled with complications, disagreements about the meaning of love, questions about love's relation to power and dominance, and the role of sexuality, Lawrence projects the tumult of post-war England as the values of the past yield to newer, more personal goals. n Mary Whipple

Intensely emotional but not for everybody
    By John Martin
Scottish novelist Catherine Carswell stated that Women In Love is, "easy to read, but hard to understand." Certainly it is difficult to understand Lawrence, but the Amazon review by Robert Moore of another of his books (The Rainbow) does a good job of describing the essence of Lawrence's literary style. Moore states that there are four ways in which The Rainbow and Women in Love, which is really a sequel, are something new in literature. The first is the general absence of plot. In Lawrence people meet and interact but there is not much action or story development. Secondly, Lawrence instead focuses on character development and on a collection of characters rather than a single one. Thirdly, the characters are psychologically complex, illogical and filled with contrary emotions. Finally, Lawrence's novels are sensual, not just as some have concluded sexually erotic. Moore likes this style and gives the book 5 stars. Another reviewer, Glen Engel-Cox says something similar only with a negative attitude: "I simply could not put up with the seemingly endless vacillations of the characters, the souped-up descriptions of all that they thought, and the plodding story line." Engel-Cox gave it only 1 star. Thus in reading Lawrence one should be aware that one is not getting a great story, but insights into the complexities of human emotions.

It is also difficult to understand Lawrence without knowing something about his life and the times he lived in. He lived and wrote at the time of the First World War when Europe, after a period of optimism, scientific development and relative peace was plunged into a war made all the more horrible by the very technology that had fostered progress. Lawrence was greatly affected by this transformation. While many novels have an autobiographical aspect, this seems to be especially true of Lawrence. Sons and Lovers, for example, closely parallels his early life.

Women in Love centers around four characters, Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen who teach in a primary school, Rupert Birkin, a schools inspector and Gerald Crich, scion of a mine owner. The couples pair off, Ursula and Rupert and Gudrun and Gerald and the novel largely deals with their troubled relationships. The characters outlook on life is decidedly negative. Rupert, for example, muses that the world would be a better place if there were no human beings to spoil it. The climax of the book, while dramatic, reinforces this extreme negativity. Granted Lawrence was deeply affected by WWI and the end of the book includes a quote from Kaiser Wilhelm regretting the war. But the American Civil War was also a bloody, terrible event and there is no tomorrow-is-another-day-Scarlett O'Hara finish to Women in Love. Quite the contrary.

Having read Sons and Lovers and now Women in Love I will not read The Rainbow or other works by Lawrence. I tend to agree with Mr. Engel-Cox in liking an interesting story rather than character study and/or psychological musings. I also think the human condition is not as bad as Lawrence presents it. For that reason I am giving this book a 3 star rating, meaning that it may be very interesting for some people, but others will not like it.

I loved this book! I am an animal lover, and as an adult, looking at the cover of the book, I assumed it was mostly for children. Big surprise, I couldn't put it down! I had to keep following the adventures of the characters and turned every page anxiously to read what happens next. If you love dogs, no matter what your age, you will love this book!

    NOT the full, original book

The Kindle Ebook isn't actually the original printing of Augusta J. Evans' Civil War novel -- large sections originally published in the Southern version of the text have been cut out. A warning to potential students or scholars interested in Evans' work.

Not as good as the first book, but still worth all 5 stars
    By Sean C. Duggan
It's not as good as the first book in my opinion. It does different things and does them well, but it just didn't have the same draw for me. Gary, aka Merciless, starts where he did at the end of the first story, discovering that the teleportation somehow took a month and zombies have overrun Falconcrest City. Since Falconcrest is his city, not to mention that he keeps all of his things there, this simply cannot stand.

Things I liked about the book included Gary's tendency to succeed on a combination of audacity, refusal to follow the rules that everyone else does, and the support of his friends and family. Less satisfying is the way that the conflict is almost entirely resolved before the book ends and the sudden wrench in Gary's marriage at the end just did not do it for me. Also, I felt like his successes were less due to cleverness and more due to dumb luck and random power-ups.

That said, I liked the book and I've hoping that the third book comes out soon.

On a side note, the most egregious editing issues in the book had already been resolved when I downloaded the book a day or so ago, and the author says that the other errors I sent him have also been fixed and the text resubmitted.

    Hilarious
    By David Harriss
Merciless is back, and just as funny (if not more so).

    So, why not five stars?
Proofreading. Too many typos, wrong words, and missing words. It is legible, but you notice the flaws and they detract. Worse, the flaws are more frequent and egregious at the end.

Story wise, I have an issues with Gary's marriage. I like seeing a healthy, established, and stable romantic relationship in fiction - they're rarer than unicorns (literally). The first volume had that. This volume trashes that. A poor choice that infuriates me, and cheapens the book.
Eventual recovery is possible, but it was bolder to flaunt the cliche of troubled romance than any possible restoration could be. A story choice that weakens the emotional impact of the series, and was wholly unnecessary.

    Merciless is back!!!!
    By Natalie @ BookLoversLife
Merciless is back!!! Having returned from the Supervillian Prison on the moon only to discover that his city is overrun by Zombies, Gary knows that he is the only one who can save the world, well with the help from his friends but you know, it's mostly him!! Oh and his wife has been kidnapped (well kind of) by a devastatingly handsome Greek god. What is a supervillian to do??

While a little more serious than the first, this is still thoroughly enjoyable. Poor Gary, he so wants to be a supervillian but things aren't going his way and he is forced (snigger) to do the right thing. Now he has to save his city from the undead and try to hide the fact that the Greek God is extremely handsome (You need to read it to understand ;))

Once again, the author has given us some truly funny quips between Gary and his cloak and made me laugh out loud multiple times, yet he also managed to squeeze a lot of different emotions from me in this book. Gary gets to meet someone and it pulled at my heartstrings, but the biggest gut wrench was what happened to his wife! I have to say though that I loved the twist the author did at the end!! I can't say much else because I'll spoil it, so I'll just say, go read it NOW!!!!

Again, the amount of different characters were extremely well written and developed. Usually in books with so many characters I find some of them are just back ground noise, not so here. The author really gives each character time to grow! I loved the Greek God!!

The plot is also well written and thought out. We kind of have a bit of everything. "This time with zombies, zombified heroes and villains, cults, magic, superscience, a dragon, a Greek demigod, and so much more!" We also have a load of awesome pop culture reference that made me giddy :)

In all, a really excellent second book. This has a bit of everything and I can't recommend it enough. I love the world and characters this author has created and look forward to the third!!

Once again, Jeffrey Kafer nails it. He is Gary!!! I don't know what else to say about his narration that I haven't said before. He always does an amazing job with the performance and I never find any faults.

*I received a copy of this for review. This in no way affected my thoughts.*
