DR.COSMO.

  • Moby-Dick; or, The Whale (1851) is a novel by Herman Melville considered an outstanding work of Romanticism and the American Renaissance. A sailor called Ishmael narrates the obsessive quest of Ahab, captain of the whaler Pequod, for revenge on Moby Dick, a white whale which on a previous voyage destroyed Ahab's ship and severed his leg at the knee. Although the novel was a commercial failure and out of print at the time of the author's death in 1891, its reputation as a Great American Novel grew during the 20th century. William Faulkner confessed he wished he had written it himself, and D. H. Lawrence called it "one of the strangest and most wonderful books in the world", and "the greatest book of the sea ever written". "Call me Ishmael" is one of world literature's most famous opening sentences. The product of a year and a half of writing, the book is dedicated to Nathaniel Hawthorne, "in token of my admiration for his genius", and draws on Melville's experience at sea, on his reading in whaling literature, and on literary inspirations such as Shakespeare and the Bible. The detailed and realistic descriptions of whale hunting and of extracting whale oil, as well as life aboard ship among a culturally diverse crew, are mixed with exploration of class and social status, good and evil, and the existence of God. In addition to narrative prose, Melville uses styles and literary devices ranging from songs, poetry and catalogs to Shakespearean stage directions, soliloquies and asides.

Grade 5 Up-Opening with the classic line, "Call me Ishmael," the narrator's New England accent adds a touch of authenticity to this sometimes melodramatic presentation. The St. Charles Players do a credible job on the major roles, but some of the group responses, such as "Aye, aye Captain," sound more comic than serious. This adaptation retains a good measure of Melville's dialogue and key passages which afford listeners a vivid connection with the lengthy novel. Background music and appropriate sound effects enhance the telling of the story about Captain Ahab's obsessive pursuit of the malevolent white whale. The cassettes are clearly marked, and running times are noted on each side of the tapes. Announcements at the beginning of each side and a subtle chime signal at the end make it easy to follow the story, but a stereo player must be used to hear some dialogue. The lightweight cardboard package is inadequate for circulation. Done in a radio theatre format, the recording does a nice job of introducing the deeper themes of the book and covering the major events. For school libraries that support an American literature curriculum, this recording offers a different interpretation of an enduring classic.

In a sense, this work is the piece de resistance of the textual revolution in American scholarship of the past generation. The first half is the final MLA "Approved Text" of the classic novel, prepared under the auspices of the Center for Editions of American Authors. The second half consists of an Historical Note detailing background, genetic composition, publication, and ensuing critical reception; a discussion of its textual history; and some relevant marginalia. The work is not only thorough and rigorous, but, considering the scholarly grittiness of the endeavor, surprisingly lucid and graceful in its exposition. Highly recommended for special collections. Considerably abridged from what Needle characterizes as Herman Melville's "enormous . . . long and rambling, even obscure" novel, this reworking, with moody illustrations on nearly every page, won't look out of place on a coffee table but still offers plenty of substance. Needle links passages of the original book, ranging in length from one line to several pages, with extended, ruminative summaries and his own comments, which are distinguished by a lighter typeface. Benson ably captures the tale's gloom and grandeur with a plethora of strong character portraits and other illustrations, mostly rendered in shadowed, atmospheric pen and ink, that burst into full color when the white whale arrives on the scene. Closing with a glossary of nautical terms and a labeled cutaway view of a typical whaling ship, this version will appeal to readers who might be after a richer literary experience than Will Eisner offers in his graphic novel retelling (2001) but are still reluctant to immerse themselves in the pleasures of the full-size leviathan. your understanding might boil down to the quality of the gloss

Unless you are a naval historian or a Melville scholar, you probably won't have a rewarding (or even comprehensible) time with Moby-Dick at this remove unless the edition you're using comes with a good set of footnotes. Here's the skinny on the various editions currently on shelves:

THESE HAVE FOOTNOTES ON THE PAGE ITSELF:

    * Charles Feidelson, Jr.'s annotated edition. Unquestionably the most all-around useful edition of Moby-Dick ever printed. Generous and highly useful footnotes right on the page, covering lexical, allusional, and cross-referential items. Two disadvantages: you may at times feel put upon by Feidelson's interlarded interpretations, and the thing is totally out of print. Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1964. ISBN: 067260311X

    * The "Norton critical" edition, edited by Parker and Hayford. The edition most widely employed by scholars. Stingier with the footnotes than Feidelson, but still a good second choice. Many useful essays at the end. The layout of the text is a bit hard on the eye, though. Make sure you get the SECOND edition, from 2001. ISBN: 0393972836

    * The "Barnes and Noble Classics" edition. The footnotes for the most part are skimpy and confined to obscure vocabulary, not cultural and literary allusions. ISBN: 1-59308-018-2

THESE HAVE A FOOTNOTES SECTION IN THE BACK OF THE BOOK:

    * The "Oxford World Classics" edition. About 11 pp. at the end. ISBN: 0-19-283385-5

    * The "Modern Library" edition. About 13 pp. at the end. ISBN: 0-679-78327-X

    * The "Penguin Classics" edition. About 15 pp. of notes at the end by Tom Quirk. ISBN: 0-14-24.3724-7 (This is their fancy hardbound version: see next item.)

    * The "Penguin Classics" edition. About 15 pp. of notes at the end by Tom Quirk. ISBN: 0-14-03.9084-7 (This is their paperback edition, which looks totally different but is exactly the same as the previous entry. This claims to be the "definitive text," but any such claim is spurious -- cf. Hayford and Parker [v.s.] for a good discussion of why. Penguin previously came out with an identical-looking but much thicker version annotated by Harold Beaver: the notes for that edition were copious, but on the whole too fanciful and self-indulgent to be of much use.)

    * The "Library of America" edition. (This is the one included in the same volume with "Redburn" and "White Jacket.") About 9 pp. of notes at the end. Unfortunately, they're a bit skimpy. You see, they're of the "go get it yourself" kind. For example, when Melville writes, "send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger," the footnotes -- the incidence of which is not marked in the running text -- merely says "Luke 16:24". In other words, you've got to look it up yourself. So I would characterize the footnotes as sparse and taciturn: they'll clue you in to the source, but as for the exact wording of something and its accumulated historical connotations, you've got to come up with those yourself. ISBN: 0-940450-09-7

    THESE HAVE NO FOOTNOTES WHATSOEVER:

Why do publishers still print editions of Moby Dick without any footnotes or glossary whatsoever? Who can read it? What a waste of paper. I get so irritated! In any event, the following publishers have decided you'd prefer your white whale raw:

    * The "Bantam Classic" edition. ISBN: 0-553-21311-3 Ain't got jack.

    * The "Everyman's Library" edition. ISBN: 0-679-40559-3. Zilch.

    * The "Penguin 150th Anniversary" edition. ISBN: 0-14-20.0008-6 Bupkiss! Handsome, though.

    * The "Arion Press" edition. ISBN: 0-520-04354-5. Also annoyingly oversized.

And that's my bit of altruism for the week.

This book is gonna make it!
    By Adam Roberts
Finishing "Moby Dick" goes up there with my greatest (and few) academic achievements. It was a gruelling read, but---in the end---completely worthwhile.
I've been reading it for 6 months. I started over the summer, during an abroad program in Oxford, and I remember sitting outside reading when one of the professors came over, saw what I was reading, and said: "It's a very strange book, isn't it?"
Looking back, that might be the best way to describe it. The blurb from D.H. Lawrence on the back cover agrees: Moby Dick "commands a stillness in the soul, an awe...[it is] one of the strangest and most wonderful books in the world."
Now there are those who will say that the book's middle is unbearable---with its maddeningly detailed accounts of whaling. Part of me agrees. That was the hardest to get through. But, still, even the most dull subject offers Melville an opportunity to show off his writing chops. He's a fantastic writer---his text most resembles that of Shakespeare.
And, like one Shakespeare's characters, Melville sees all the world as a stage. Consider this beautiful passage from the first chapter:
"Though I cannot tell why it was exactly that those stage managers, the Fates, put me down for this shabby part of a whaling voyage, when others were set down for magnifient parts in high tragedies, and short and easy parts in genteel comedies, and jolly parts in farces--though I cannot tell why this was exactly; yet, now that I recall all the circumstances, I think I can see a little into the springs and motives which being cunningly presented to me under various disguises, induced me to set about performing the part I did, besides cajoling me into the delusion that it was a choice resulting from my own unbiased freewill and discriminating judgment."
The end of "Moby Dick" informs the rest of the book, and in doing so makes rereading it inevitable. It is telling that Moby Dick doesn't appear until page 494. It is telling, because, the majority of the book is spent in anticipation---in fact, the whole book is anticipation. It's not unlike sex, actually---delaying gratification to a point of almost sublime anguish. What comes at the book's end, then, is mental, physical, and spiritual release (as well as fufillment).
The book leaves you with questions both large and small. I was actually most troubled with this question---What happened to Ishmael? No, we learn his fate at the book's end, but where was he throughout it? We all know how it starts---"Call me Ishmael"---and the book's first few chapters show him interacting with Queequeg and an innkeeper. But then we lose him onboard the Pequod---we never see him interact with anyone. No one ever addresses him. He seems to witness extremely private events---conferences in the Captain's quarters, conversations aboard multiple boats, and--what can only be his conjecture--the other characters' internal dialogue. Is he a phantom? What is he that he isn't? Somehow I think this question masks a much larger and more important one.
Try "Moby Dick." Actually, don't try it---read it. Work at it. Like lifting weights a bit heavier than you're used to, "Moby Dick" will strengthen your brain muscle. Don't believe those who hate it, they didn't read it. They didn't work at it. Be like Ishmael, who says: "I try all things; I achieve what I can." Or, more daringly, be like Ahab, whose ambition is his curse, but whose curse propels and writes the book itself.

    Open your mind
    By TJ
Last year I decided to expand my intellectual horizons by reading a series of American literary classics. Moby Dick was the first book on my list. It took me three months to finish this legendary story and, looking back on it now, I must say that it was worth every minute. To others who are considering this effort I say this: buttress your stamina and open your mind. This is not John Grisham or Tom Clancy. You will be reading high literature and you will be required to think. If you do so, Ishmael, Ahab and crew will open a window to some of mankind's most profound questions: Is it better to fight evil or promote virtue? Where is the line between honorable justice and blind vengeance? Do bad things happen because the universe is evil or just indifferent? The true pleasure to be derived from reading this book can be found by closing its pages every so often and reflecting on the questions that it will raise in your mind. A completely different experience than breezing through the latest best-seller, but much more rewarding.
Be aware that Moby Dick is many types of books in one. It is part adventure story, part sermon, part history of whaling, part encyclopedia of whale anatomy, part metaphysical allegory. Expect it to change periodically as you move through it, be receptive to each part, and don't try to compartmentalize it as any one particular type of work.

  • Macbeth (full title The Tragedy of Macbeth) is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare, and is considered one of his darkest and most powerful works. Set in Scotland, the play illustrates the damaging physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power for its own sake. The play is believed to have been written between 1599 and 1606, and is most commonly dated 1606. The earliest account of a performance of what was probably Shakespeare's play is the Summer of 1606, when Simon Forman recorded seeing such a play at the Globe Theatre. It was first published in the Folio of 1623, possibly from a prompt book. It was most likely written during the reign of James I, who had been James VI of Scotland before he succeeded to the English throne in 1603. James was a patron of Shakespeare's acting company, and of all the plays Shakespeare wrote during James's reign, Macbeth most clearly reflects the playwright's relationship with the sovereign.

    Amazon.com Review
A lush, cautionary tale of a life of vileness and deception or a loving portrait of the aesthetic impulse run rampant? Why not both? After Basil Hallward paints a beautiful, young man's portrait, his subject's frivolous wish that the picture change and he remain the same comes true. Dorian Gray's picture grows aged and corrupt while he continues to appear fresh and innocent. After he kills a young woman, "as surely as if I had cut her little throat with a knife," Dorian Gray is surprised to find no difference in his vision or surroundings. "The roses are not less lovely for all that. The birds sing just as happily in my garden."

As Hallward tries to make sense of his creation, his epigram-happy friend Lord Henry Wotton encourages Dorian in his sensual quest with any number of Wildean paradoxes, including the delightful "When we are happy we are always good, but when we are good we are not always happy." But despite its many languorous pleasures, The Picture of Dorian Gray is an imperfect work. Compared to the two (voyeuristic) older men, Dorian is a bore, and his search for ever new sensations far less fun than the novel's drawing-room discussions. Even more oddly, the moral message of the novel contradicts many of Wilde's supposed aims, not least "no artist has ethical sympathies. An ethical sympathy in an artist is an unpardonable mannerism of style." Nonetheless, the glamour boy gets his just deserts. And Wilde, defending Dorian Gray, had it both ways: "All excess, as well as all renunciation, brings its own punishment."

    From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. First published in 1890 in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine and the following year in novel form, The Picture of Dorian Gray categorically changed Victorian Britain and the landscape of literature. An ostentatious, self-confessed aesthete, known for his wit and intellect, Wilde not only had to endure his prose being labeled "poisonous" and "vulgar," but also suffer its use as evidence in the ensuing trial, resulting in his eventual imprisonment for crimes of "gross indecency." Frankel's introduction provides a deft preliminary analysis of the novel itself—exploring etymology and extensive editorial alterations (both accidental and deliberate)—and offers valuable insight into the socio-cultural juxtaposition of aristocratic Victorian society and the London underworld. The original typescript provides the unique opportunity to examine what was considered acceptable in both the US and UK at the time. Intriguing annotations allude to Wilde's influences and enterprising range of reference, incorporating art, poetry, literature, Greek mythology, philosophy, and fashion (certain to inspire further reading; an appendix is provided). Comparisons are drawn between Dorian Gray and Wilde's other literary output, as well as to the work of Walter Pater. Numerous illustrations subtly compliment Frankelÿs inferences. A fine contextualization of a major work of fiction profoundly interpreted, ultimately riveting. (Mar.)

    From School Library Journal
Grade 10 Up-"The Whole Story" format provides illustrations and annotations to the classic text. Ross's lively and sophisticated cartoons add interest, and historical information helps readers place the novel in proper context and gives insight into its characters. The problem with this attractive, glossy layout, however, is that the text and the quotes pulled from it are not always on the same page. Further, some illustrations and notations visually cut into the narrative and may distract readers. For example, a drawing appears on the first page along with the passage, "In the centre of the room, clamped to an upright easel, stood the full-length portrait of a young man of extraordinary personal beauty," but that quote does not appear until the second page of the story. Useful as a supplement to the original novel, but not a replacement for it.

No need to avoid Shakespeare anymore
    By David E. Levine
I consider myself to be a reasonably literate individual but, I have always avoided Shakespeare since I cannot make sense of the text. But now, I have fianally read Macbeth because, with "No Fear Shakespeare," each left hand page is written in the original whereas the right hand page is a plain English translation. So now I know, that when a porter says "it makes him stand to and not stand to," he is not referring about someone standing up on his feet. Instead, it means that alcoholic drinks make a man have an erection but then, lose the erection. How true is that and how cool is it to be able to understand that? Seriously, Macbeth is a great tale of ambition, deception and conscience. Thanks to this innovative book, I was able to read the original, then, after reading each page, I referred to the translation so I could understand. It was fun to read lines in the original, try to work out what I thought it meant and then check whether I was right. I recommend this as a way finally read and appreciate Macbeth.

    Suits our needs
    By A Customer
I won't even attempt to critique Shakespeare's work, as some have done here. I'm not reviewing MacBeth, but this particular version of it. As a homeschooling Mom with three highschool students, the only way we could get through Shakespeare's works is by having a copy of Shakespeare Made Easy on hand. As it is, we completed 5 plays this year - all done orally, with each of us taking several parts. While I think it's important that my kids read Shakespeare in it's original format (and they did), I had the Shakespeare Made Easy translation handy so that I could give simple, concise explanations whenever they just didn't "get it". I recommend these books for that purpose - not for the watered down versions of these classics, but to make them understandable to the average student who might otherwise find Shakespeare's works boring and a waste of time (as many students do).

    Best Yet!

I've been playing this in a regular senior English class. Many of the students are finally understanding the play. The actors in this cd do a wonderful job interpreting their lines. The Scottish accents are well done. Sound effects make it vivid. It's the best production I've found to date.

    Great Follow-Up!
    By J. T. Evans
This second installment of Cord's continuing tales does step more away from the "space western" of the first book and into "space opera," but Cord remains true to himself while fighting ghosts from the past haunting him. Patrick Hester does a great job of weaving a compelling tale. This is wet my appetite for more Cord Cahill stories. I can't wait to see what happens next to our intrepid hero.

The first installment was more like a western
    By Tracy Mcintyre
This installment differed from the first, in that the emphasis was much more on the science fiction/space opera aspects of the series. The first installment was more like a western. I enjoyed the glimpse of the universe's technology and the few tidbits about the history of the Sentinels and more about the Republic. As with the first story, I enjoy Cord's relationship with the AI. Even though the AI is a digital creation, “Mother” has a personality. Cord's banter with “Mother” is both touching and humorous. The action scenes are well written and pulled me on through the story. There was a little less mystery in the story. As with the first, I await the next installment with anticipation.

    Well done but
    By Len
This is a worthy continuation to " The First ". The only reason that I gave it a 3 rating was because of so many typos and spelling errors. The author states in the beginning that he writes with a visual style that when someone with a heavy accent is speaking he writes it how it would sound and not how it would be written. This I actually enjoyed more than I thought I would, but it obviously made editing this book very difficult. Once you can get past that the story is worth the read.

    Again, great story, lousy proofreading.
    By Hyperstrike
As with his first book, Ewers' story telling is clearly evident.

However, as with his first book, the book is SCREAMING for a competent proofreader.

The book's obviously been spellchecked, but correct spelling of a misused term is still jarring.

There's a point in the book where one character is threatening to do something with a "scepter". But the word used was "spectre".

Again, the book is at roughly second-draft quality, and Mr. Ewers needs to get outside help for proofreading.

It's the only thing stopping me from giving him five stars. A small flub here or there wouldn't make me blink. But there's a LOT more than a small flub going on.

    Great story, great characters, but...
    By Kevin E. Oliver
This was a fun sequel to a fun book. The "world" is creative interesting, as are the heroes and villains. You should read this book and its predecessor if you like the super hero genre. I left off a star because both works are in dire need of a professional editor. (Chard is a vegetable, not a description of something that is burned. That appeared several times in both books). That kind of error is found throughout both books and detracts a bit from what is otherwise a very good offering. I will buy the next books from this author and I promise that fifth star if the editing flaws are fixed!

On a hotter and more volatile earth in the twenty-third century, humans like Clare and Jon live in utopia, hunting and gathering in small tribal bands, engaged in daily art and ritual, reunited with old friends like the shaggy mammoth and giant ground sloth. Even better, they still have solar- powered laptops and can communicate with each other around the world. The understanding of physics has also advanced. When scientists first cloned extinct species from the Pleistocene, they discovered that many of them were telepathic—that consciousness travels in waves. For most people, animism has become the preferred religion, a panpsychism compatible with the laws of a fractal holographic universe. As Clare tells one of her students, the return to an older, Paleolithic lifestyle is “one of humanity’s greatest achievements.”

It’s too bad that utopia had to come at such a cost: a genetically engineered super-virus that wiped out most of earth’s human population. Humanity was shaken by that event, and humanity vowed to change. Now, on the 150th anniversary of that catastrophe, a small group of men and women—as well as a smarter-than-average dire wolf and saber-toothed cat—are suddenly faced with decisions in which the stakes are higher than ever before. Will earth repeat the cycle of unbridled hubris? Or is humanity’s destiny even stranger than that?

Skyhorse Publishing, under our Night Shade and Talos imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of titles for readers interested in science fiction (space opera, time travel, hard SF, alien invasion, near-future dystopia), fantasy (grimdark, sword and sorcery, contemporary urban fantasy, steampunk, alternative history), and horror (zombies, vampires, and the occult and supernatural), and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller, a national bestseller, or a Hugo or Nebula award-winner, we are committed to publishing quality books from a diverse group of authors.

    Review
“Is there anything Sharman Apt Russell cannot do on the printed page? A triumph of the imagination; a brilliant and mesmerizing addition to the sci-fi canon." —JJ Amaworo Wilson, author of Damnificados

“This conflicted postapocalyptic tale of sparse but still civilized humans in a world of cloned mammoths and telepathic saber-toothed tigers tries to find the balance between preservation and progress. Clare, a hunter and writing instructor, guides Brad, a lab rat who discovered an important principle of the universe, on a wilderness quest. It leads not to enlightenment but to bigender loner Luke/Lucia and mutated dire wolf Dog. Wishing for fame in a world that frowns on individual aggrandizement, Brad takes peyote, links minds with Dog, and discovers the long-sought secret of how DNA broadcasts consciousness. Aided by Luke/Lucia and Dog, he constructs a device that can resurrect the dead, including Clare’s baby daughter. Russell happily sets up a “Paleoterrific” primitive utopia and then allows the gritty reality of dying young and the discomfort of conforming to social norms in a small community to wear away at an eco-friendly life with nature. Big cats may mentally howl “I love you,” but they still want to eat you.” —Publishers Weekly

“There’s a spin on this story that is unlike the others I have read. I liked it enough that I read it all in one sitting. . . . I essentially inhaled this book. It has a wonderful flow.” –Geeks of Doom

“A dazzling and hallucinatory myth…Beautifully written and vertiginous—Castaneda jacked into the Matrix, Einstein crunching numbers on the walls of Lascaux, a druid with a sickle and a laptop.” —Andrew Todhunter, author of A Meal Observed and Dangerous Games

“Russell’s intelligence and imagination shine.” —Eric C. Otto, author of Green Speculations: Science Fiction and Transformative Environmentalism

"In classic science fiction style, Russell presents a devastated world reformed into a seeming paleolithic paradise… [a] suspenseful and gripping tale” —William Seager, author of Natural Fabrications: Science, Emergence and Consciousness

“Like Ursula K. Le Guin and Kim Stanley Robinson, Sharman Apt Russell tells stories of human reorientation within a radically reanimated world… an urgent story that immerses the reader in the agonizing entanglements and wonders of being.” —Gib Prettyman, Pennsylvania State University, Associate Editor, Resources for American Literary Study

“Sharman Apt Russell’s vibrant new novel will enthrall readers with its vision of a future in which animism, panpsychism and hard science come together to show us how the forces shaping consciousness and the universe are one and the same.” —Imre Szeman, co-author of After Globalization

"An intriguing and compelling tale of humanity struggling to recover its indigenous allegiance to Earth and Earth Law despite the genie of physical science having well and truly escaped from the bottle." —Freya Matthews, author of For Love of Matter: a Contemporary Panpsychism

“A voice keenly in tune with the discourses of science, ecology, rhetoric, and spirituality. . . . Russell’s vision of tomorrow imagines sobering consequences—and pathways to possible solutions—to the crises we face today." —Michael R. Page, author of Frederik Pohl and The Literary Imagination from Erasmus Darwin to H.G. Wells: Science, Evolution, and Ecology

“Russell has a knack for fast-paced action and poetic turns of phrase, and readers will turn the pages quickly so they can follow along with the adventures of Brad, Clare, Dog, and Luke as they journey through this new world. Fans of post-apocalyptic science fiction will find this a wild and enjoyable ride.” —Stephanie Vie, author of (E)-Dentity

“What a great read! Bringing back the animals—and reminding us of animal powers and minds—is an important message for the here and now. An engaging—and thoughtfully-informed—post-apocalyptic novel that stays with you for weeks afterward. Sharman Russell has a clever and also provocative imagination that leads the reader into deep reflection on who we are and who we might become.” —Margaret Conkey, co-author of Ancient Goddesses: the Myths and Evidence and co-editor of Engendering Archaeology: Women and Prehistory

“With compelling characters, a driving rhythm, and a rich plot, the novel smoothly navigates between the principles of biology and physics, the mystique of animism, the politics of posthumanism, and the tropes of science fiction.” —Keren Omry, American Studies, University of Haifa, Science Fiction Research Association, Vice President

“She's earned a spot next to Margaret Atwood and Daniel Quinn for sparking readers to reflect on the tensions between the natural environment and our ever-evolving technology.” —Sean Murray, author of Composition Incorporated: Turbo Capitalism, Higher Education, and the Teaching of Writing

“Russell’s implementation of panpsychist theory brings this book to life as one of the most extraordinary sci-fis of our time . . ." —Jack Symes, author of "In Defense of Strong Emergentist Panpsychism"

“A syncretic approach where hard science and the hard problem of consciousness merge into a welcome addition to the science fiction canon. What’s more, this is a piece of storytelling at its best!” —John M. Gist, co-author of Angst and Evolution: The Struggle for Human Potential, author of Lizard Dreaming of Birds

“A gripping read—I couldn’t put it down, but I didn’t want it to end! Sharman Russell knows how to pay tribute to the great traditions of science fiction storytelling—and how to make them new for the twenty-first century.” —Lisa Yaszek, author of Galactic Suburbia and past president of the Science Fiction Research Association

“Russell’s novel remains steadfastly optimistic. A refreshing alternative to near-future dystopias, she offers a glimpse of a ‘future primitive’ in which people live more sustainably and equitably, sustained by a sense of wonder when nature turns out to have been panpsychic all along.” —Melody Jue, author of “Vampire Squid Media”

    Knocking on Heaven’s Door Review

Knocking on Heaven’s Door, a novel by Sharman Russell
Yucca Publishing, an imprint of Skyhorse Publishing 2016
    266 pages

Sharman Russell does not back down from the fundamental human questions of our common origins and shared future in her dystopian sci-fi novel Knocking on Heaven’s Door. She confronts the impulses and instincts entwined in our DNA that no amount of reasoning and spiritual practice could deny. The human quest to dominate, to take charge of our world, rather than surrender to the truth of our interconnected existence is our undoing.

Set in twenty-third century New Mexico in the wake of an era known as the Return where a super-virus crippled the human population on earth, Russell depicts a “Paleoterrific” society living in the midst of ruin. The protagonist, Clare, is an online writing teacher who connects with students from the three remaining human civilizations in Russia, Costa Rica, and the American Southwest. She is also a guide for Brad, an employee of the lab responsible for DNA experiments that tend to be questionable in this fragile new world. He is on a requisite quest that he has delayed for quite some time. He and Clare strike up an unexpected relationship that leads them both to question everything they have known.

Russell is a true lover of knowledge whose affinity for anthropology, history, physics, biology, anatomy and physiology, genetics, geology, botany, basket weaving and so much more come together in this book. One of the most mesmerizing scenes is the death of Dog, a cloned extinct species from the Pleistocene era who has gained consciousness via telepathy. As he lays dying in Chapter 11, the omniscient narrator leaves no detail behind:
In those last moments, his body was deliriously busy, bladder emptying, heart pumping, right and left atria filling with blood, priming the ventricles, ventricles contracting, propelling blood to the lungs, aortic and pulmonary valves opening atria—then not filling. Where was the blood? The heart waited to contract (111).

I further enjoyed Russell’s depiction of Clare, a strong female character who has misgivings about her pregnancy because of how she might be received by her tribe given that the father is not one of them. Via Clare’s experience, Russell confronts issues regarding family structure that manifest in our current patriarchy and into the future.

This interesting and well written novel proved to be a challenging read for me. As a fan of documentary, realism, romance, and young adult fiction, the combination of trying to understand the nature of the post super-virus world and the vocabulary associated with it made for a slow read. In the first half of the novel, I felt uncertain of the setting and I found myself re-reading a number of passages to nail down the basics.
Once that unsettling feeling passed, I was able to grasp Russell’s vision of a future that is daunting on the one hand, but essentially optimistic. Human beings gain the capacity to communicate with plants and animals and ultimately construct a reality with the benefits of being able to a hear one another.
Knocking on Heaven’s Door is not for the faint of heart. Be ready for a wildly unexpected look at the twenty-third century and all that it takes to thrive in this new world.

    A quest at many levels.
    By Sonnie
I have to admit, I had to start this story twice before it captured me. In the first couple of chapters, I couldn’t connect to the juxtapositions of modern laptops and the worldwide web to the hunter-gatherers of The Return to Paleolithic animals that could communicate with humans non-verbally. By the fifth chapter, though, the pieces were starting to fit into the puzzle through the consciousness of Dog.

The story line follows the lives and actions of several characters. It takes place a couple of hundred years after a catastrophic event that wiped out most of the humans on the planet, leaving only a small number of people to recreate lifestyles, rules and technology. Clare lives as humans did before technology, cities and global civilization, valuing the abundance and community of her hunter-gatherer tribe. Brad is a “lab rat,” working and living in the remaining center of technology, responsible for maintaining the world-wide web. Clare serves as Brad’s guide on his required “quest” into the wilds to test his survival skills. There’s Luke, an old guy who’s been living wild for a long time, though he started in the lab himself years ago; there’s a connection between Luke and Brad to be explored. And then, there’s Dog. Dog is a direwolf, one of the Paleolithic-era creatures recreated from genetic materials before the great catastrophe; these creatures, unlike most humans, survived the decimation of the human population. Dog is an absorber of scientific information and is fascinated, even obsessed with DNA. He leads Brad and Luke down the path to new, untried territory that taps into consciousness and the collective unconscious.

Sharman has tapped quantum science, Einstein, Marcus Aurelius and the Stoics, the ancient Greeks, the pre-history and culture of ancient peoples, and modern nanotechnology; she has channeled all of that, confusing as it sounds, into a coherent story that challenges our beliefs about what is possible. All set in the thirsty, fire-scorched, magnificent Southwest. She asks the unholy question: should we do what we can do without considering ‘why’ and 'whether'? Through the characters’ actions, she explores the pursuit of a scientific experiment when we haven’t considered the consequences. Her quest comes together in the end in recognition of our immutable humanity and the interconnected-ness of all life.

The keys to enjoying this story are to suspend belief from page one, and read patiently until the juxtapositions begin to resolve into a single focus. The quest Sharman takes us on is worth that time and attention.

    Brilliant!

Is there anything Sharman Apt Russell cannot do on the printed page? Knocking on Heaven’s Door is a lyrical, superbly written tale set in the future. In the midst of the great ruin of Earth, brought about by ecological catastrophe and a supervirus, the remnants of humanity wander in their ravaged Eden. Communing with nature, taking only what they need, the heroes do everything that humans have always done: fall in love, fight, procreate, and try to survive. Apt Russell’s is a singular vision that includes a host of stunning ideas – a gender-hopping bush-dweller, telepathic animals, and ways of revivifying the dead. Knocking on Heaven’s Door is a triumph of the imagination, a brilliant and mesmerizing addition to the sci-fi canon.

    About the Author
