  • Beowulf (/ˈbeɪ.ɵwʊlf/; in Old English [ˈbeːo̯ˌwulf]) is an Old English epic poem consisting of 3182 alliterative lines. It is the oldest surviving long poem in Old English and is commonly cited as one of the most important works of Old English literature. It was written in England some time between the 8th and the early 11th century. The author was an anonymous Anglo-Saxon poet, referred to by scholars as the "Beowulf poet". The poem is set in Scandinavia. Beowulf, a hero of the Geats, comes to the aid of Hrothgar, the king of the Danes, whose mead hall in Heorot has been under attack by a monster known as Grendel. After Beowulf slays him, Grendel's mother attacks the hall and is then also defeated. Victorious, Beowulf goes home to Geatland (Götaland in modern Sweden) and later becomes king of the Geats. After a period of fifty years has passed, Beowulf defeats a dragon, but is fatally wounded in the battle. After his death, his attendants cremate his body and erect a tower on a headland in his memory. The full poem survives in the manuscript known as the Nowell Codex, located in the British Library. It has no title in the original manuscript, but has become known by the name of the story's protagonist. In 1731, the manuscript was badly damaged by a fire that swept through Ashburnham House in London that had a collection of medieval manuscripts assembled by Sir Robert Bruce Cotton

    Amazon.com Review
In Beowulf warriors must back up their mead-hall boasts with instant action, monsters abound, and fights are always to the death. The Anglo-Saxon epic, composed between the 7th and 10th centuries, has long been accorded its place in literature, though its hold on our imagination has been less secure. In the introduction to his translation, Seamus Heaney argues that Beowulf's role as a required text for many English students obscured its mysteries and "mythic potency." Now, thanks to the Irish poet's marvelous recreation (in both senses of the word) under Alfred David's watch, this dark, doom-ridden work gets its day in the sun.

There are endless pleasures in Heaney's analysis, but readers should head straight for the poem and then to the prose. (Some will also take advantage of the dual-language edition and do some linguistic teasing out of their own.) The epic's outlines seem simple, depicting Beowulf's three key battles with the scaliest brutes in all of art: Grendel, Grendel's mother (who's in a suitably monstrous snit after her son's dismemberment and death), and then, 50 years later, a gold-hoarding dragon "threatening the night sky / with streamers of fire." Along the way, however, we are treated to flashes back and forward and to a world view in which a thane's allegiance to his lord and to God is absolute. In the first fight, the man from Geatland must travel to Denmark to take on the "shadow-stalker" terrorizing Heorot Hall. Here Beowulf and company set sail: Men climbed eagerly up the gangplank,
sand churned in the surf, warriors loaded
a cargo of weapons, shining war-gear
in the vessel's hold, then heaved out,
away with a will in their wood-wreathed ship.
Over the waves, with the wind behind her
and foam at her neck, she flew like a bird... After a fearsome night victory over march-haunting and heath-marauding Grendel, our high-born hero is suitably strewn with gold and praise, the queen declaring: "Your sway is wide as the wind's home, / as the sea around cliffs." Few will disagree. And remember, Beowulf has two more trials to undergo.

Heaney claims that when he began his translation it all too often seemed "like trying to bring down a megalith with a toy hammer." The poem's challenges are many: its strong four-stress line, heavy alliteration, and profusion of kennings could have been daunting. (The sea is, among other things, "the whale-road," the sun is "the world's candle," and Beowulf's third opponent is a "vile sky-winger." When it came to over-the-top compound phrases, the temptations must have been endless, but for the most part, Heaney smiles, he "called a sword a sword.") Yet there are few signs of effort in the poet's Englishing. Heaney varies his lines with ease, offering up stirring dialogue, action, and description while not stinting on the epic's mix of fate and fear. After Grendel's misbegotten mother comes to call, the king's evocation of her haunted home may strike dread into the hearts of men and beasts, but it's a gift to the reader: A few miles from here
a frost-stiffened wood waits and keeps watch
above a mere; the overhanging bank
is a maze of tree-roots mirrored in its surface.
At night there, something uncanny happens:
the water burns. And the mere bottom
has never been sounded by the sons of men.
On its bank, the heather-stepper halts:
the hart in flight from pursuing hounds
will turn to face them with firm-set horns
and die in the wood rather than dive
beneath its surface. That is no good place. In Heaney's hands, the poem's apparent archaisms and Anglo-Saxon attitudes--its formality, blood-feuds, and insane courage--turn the art of an ancient island nation into world literature. --Kerry Fried

    From Publishers Weekly
When the great monster Grendel comes to Denmark and dashes its warriors' hopes, installing himself in their great hall and eating alive the valiant lords, the hero Beowulf arrives from over the ocean to wrestle the beast. He saves the Danes, who sing of his triumphs, but soon the monster's mother turns up to take him hostage: having killed her, our hero goes home to the land of the Geats, acquires the kingship, and fights to the death an enormous dragon. That's the plot of this narrative poem, composed more than a millennium ago in the Germanic language that gave birth (eventually) to our version of English. Long a thing for professors to gloss, the poem includes battles, aggressive boasts, glorious funerals, frightening creatures and a much-studied alliterative meter; earlier versions in current vernacular have pleased lay readers and helped hard-pressed students. Nobel laureate Heaney has brought forth a finely wrought, controversial (for having won a prize over a children's book) modern English version, one which retains, even recommends, the archaic strengths of its warrior world, where "The Spear-Danes in days gone by/ and the kings who ruled them had courage and greatness." Well-known digressionsAa detailed dirge, the tale-within-a-tale of Hengest, "homesick and helpless" in ancient FrieslandAfind their ways into Heaney's English, which holds to the spirit (not always the letter) of the en face Anglo-Saxon, fusing swift story and seamless description, numinous adjectives and earthy nouns: in one swift scene of difficult swimming, "Shoulder to shoulder, we struggled on/ for five nights, until the long flow/ and pitch of the waves, the perishing cold drove us apart. The deep boiled up/ and its wallowing sent the sea-brutes wild." Heaney's evocative introduction voices his long-felt attraction to the poem's "melancholy fortitude," describing the decades his rendering took and the use he discovered for dialect terms. It extends in dramatic fashion Heaney's long-term archeological delvings, his dig into the origins of his beloved, conflictedAby politics and placeAEnglish language. (Feb.)

    From Library Journal
There are over 20 translations of this Old English epic into modern English, from the prose version of E. Talbot Donaldson to the verse renditions of Burton Raffel and Stanley Greenfield. The appearance of this new translation by Nobel Laureate Heaney, and especially its replacement of the Donaldson Beowulf in the Norton Anthology, instantly elevates it in the canon. Recognizing that ordinary native English dialects still contain much of the vocabulary found in Old English, Heaney tries to evoke the diction and syntax of a living language. He captures the alliterative rhythm without monotony (although he loses some of the subtle shifts of mood, making the world of Beowulf seem more primitive than it was). Heaney is especially good at creating the elegiac tone of the work. In all, this is good poetry, if not always true to the original. This bilingual edition contains a valuable introduction by Heaney and a note on names by Alfred David. For public and academic libraries.

    Audio CD is ABRIDGED
    By Robert L. Stephens
I'm posting this review as a warning to buyers that although Amazon is presently listing the audio CD as UNABRIDGED, it's actually marked "Unabridged Selections" by the publisher in what is obviously an exercise in marketing double talk.

The audio CD version omits many lines and even some sizable chunks of the original work. The only word for that is "Abridged" and the publishers should be ashamed of themselves for calling it anything other than "Abridged".

Amazon should update the listing accordingly. I'm giving the edition a 1 star rating simply to call attention to the deceitful packaging. I have no other complaint aside from that.

    Do Not Buy Kindle Edition
    By FredF
I have the physical book edition of this wonderful work, and wanted to have it also with me on Kindle. However, without any indication at all, the Kindle edition is abridged. It is only the modern English translation and does NOT include the Anglo-Saxon text.

Amazon nis selling you half a book on Kindle, not the entire book. This is very deceptive and one wonders how many other Kindle books have been butchered by Amazon.

    Beowulf Beware
    By A Customer
I enjoyed listening to the CD audio version more than reading the translation. But BEWARE. The CD is advertised as UNABRIDGED. When you read the cover carefully, it says, UNABRIDGED SELECTIONS. There are passages omitted. That was the major disappointment, and one has to assume a deliberate attempt to mislead on the part of the publisher. Otherwise, why not call it what it is, ABRIDGED?

    NOT VERY GOOD . . .
    By Nina
I usually don't like to write negative reviews because I know how much time and effort authors put into writing thier books, but felt I had to on this one. Where to start . . . the characters are flat and one-dimensional. They're not fleshed out at all and you don't get to know them or even care about them. Sometimes you have to suspend belief when you're reading a story but the things that happen in this book are beyond ridiculous. The writing is amateurish at best. I couldn't even finish the book and stopped reading it part-way through. I'd give this one a pass.

The Apocalypse Chase: Fishing in the world's most dangerous places, by Mr Graham Spence

Chris Stone has one passion in an otherwise staid existence; fishing. Stuck in a soulless job and a failed marriage, he decides to do something truly radical with his arid life: give it all up and put a 'gone fishing' sign on the door. But he wants to fish with a difference. He wants to catch fish that have seldom, if ever, seen humans before. To do so, he has to fish in the most dangerous places in the world. What follows is a roller-coaster adventure, from being hijacked by a murderous gang in South Africa, kidnapped by Marxists in Colombia, escaping Islamic fundamentalists in Chechnya and finally fighting for his life in the far outbacks of Canada. Along the way he unwittingly embarks on a journey of discovery and romance far removed from the concrete confines of his previous life. He meets an array of people; outlaws living on the hard edges of society, revolutionaries who believe it’s more fun to be Che Guevara than Bill Gates, outdoorsmen who live the ‘soul’ of the planet, and beautiful women who, like him, are running from reality. Some are honorable; some despicable. But none are boring. He also catches fish he previously only dreamt of.

    About the Author
Born in Africa, Graham Spence was a journalist for more than 20 years reporting on the turbulent apartheid era. He now lives in Berkshire, England with his wife and two sons and is a full time writer. His previous three non-fiction books, The Elephant Whisperer, Babylon’s Ark and The Last Rhino, written with his brother-in-law Lawrence Anthony, are all best sellers. Lawrence Anthony, who died on 2012, was known as the ‘Indiana Jones of conservation’. Spence has written one other novel, Keepers of the Flame, concerning international terrorism. When not banging out books, Spence is usually seen with a fly-rod in his hand chasing Rainbows over South-East England.

The Apocalypse Chase; Fishing in the worlds most dangerous places.
    By didit
I could not put the book down as I just had to know what was going to happen to Chris. Graham obviously loves fishing and he definitely knows his stuff. I know nothing about it and found it difficult to understand how anyone could put himself through so much in order to catch a few fish. However, Graham, with his very descriptive writing succeeded in educating me about the addiction.

It was a good read and I hope sells lots of copies!

A brilliant story about a guy who just wants to explore the love of his life, which is fishing. Author takes us to unusual countries and we get such a good insight into the challenges and dangers of the countries, whilst he looks for the unexplored fishing spots.

    A terrific fishing tale...
    By BowedBookshelf
So what makes a good fishing tale? Perhaps it is a little like real estate: location, location, location (or, as the Australians like to say, “position, position, position...”) But it is more than that…it is the temperament of the fisherman, the poles, the flies, the weather, the obstacles to success…as well as the size of the catch. There also has to be a little time for contemplation, and ruminations about the state of the world, both personally and globally. All this is here for the taking in this first self-published novel by Graham Spence, co-author of several nonfiction titles about the African bush with the fabled conservationist Lawrence Anthony, who died in 2012.

I read this story in a day because Spence made this fiction absolutely propulsive. The central character, Chris, sells advertising for a small newspaper in Queens, New York and is bored with his life. He is middle-aged, divorced, and barely speaks to his wife or daughter anymore. After experiencing a “heart incident” in a meeting one day at work, he decides to go ahead and live before he dies. He wants to fish the wild places where fish have never seen a human. This is the tale.

He first chooses South Africa. The narrative shifts between moments of sunny calm with great, satisfying catches and moments of breath-catching, death-defying horror. The absolute best part of this narrative (who really trusts a fisherman/storyteller anyway?) are the details and keen insights that convince us that this is the real thing, the actual location, the true situation. It is fascinating. But Chris doesn’t end there.

The next location is Colombia, South America of all places. Chris thinks that no one in their right mind would go to Colombia with all the FARC activity and kidnappings, so he won't have any competition for fish. He researches locations and decides fishing along the coastline beaches and away from the jungle would probably be safe. His Colombia section just reminds us just what a fisherman (tall tales) Chris really is. But he is so good at storytelling and fishing, we find it hard to put the book down. He survives (!) his travels in Africa and South America and we move on. But I don’t want to give away all his secrets. This is something you need to discover for yourselves. I thought it was a blast.

So I discovered this title when I began researching the authors of THE ELEPHANT WHISPERER, an exceptionally well-written nonfiction about game conservation and elephant killings in Africa. Graham Spence has a low-key website on which he introduces his two self-published fiction titles, including this one.

Do yourself a favor. I can guarantee you will have an unusual (and terrific!) day’s reading ahead with a natural raconteur, especially if you like fly fishing stories.

    Review
Poems Stevenson originally wrote for his children are beautifully illustrated in this appealing volume. --Yellow Brick Road

    From the Inside Flap
First published in 1885, Stevenson's verses so truly reflect the feelings of young children--about being small, the bliss of going up in a swing so high, discovering one's shadow, happiness and sorrow and dreaming--that they have never ceased to be an essential part of a child's library. Robinson's beautiful pictures originally appeared in 1896 in the first illustrated edition.

    From the Back Cover
'The world is so full of a number of things, I'm sure we should all be happy as kings.'This classic collection of poems, beautifully illustrated by Brian Wildsmith, recreates the happy and magical world of childhood.

A classic for any child (or child at heart)
    By Catherine S. Vodrey
This classic edition of Robert Louis Stevenson's "A Child's Garden of Verses" is justly famed because it so beautifully pairs Stevenson's sometimes exuberant, sometimes melancholy poems on childhood with the extraordinary illustrations of Tasha Tudor.
Tudor's delicate watercolors complement Stevenson's work almost to the point that you think the two, living in different centuries, must share some time-travel telepathy with each other. All the classic Stevenson pieces are here: "The Swing," "The Land of Counterpane," the terrific poem about a child's shadow. Tudor depicts only children and animals herein--as it should be--without the presence of shadow of adults anywhere. Both Stevenson and Tudor understand in their bones that no matter what grown-ups may think, children inhabit a world of their own. That world is mostly beautiful, but sometimes fraught with danger or questions. Those hints are present here, but the overwhelming impression any reader will have will be that of beauty--both in words and in pictures.

wonderful poems that will stay with you
    By A. Creech
Like many others, I first read these poems as a very young child. I didn't realise until rereading them just recently how many of them had stayed with me. The poems all deal with sounds, sights and emotions that will be familiar to most young children. And as an adult, the poetry of Robert Louis Stevenson brings back that sense of wonder and amazement that many of us lose as we grow older. One of the poems that I will always remember deals with how difficult it is to go to bed when you are told in the summer when the days are long and the sun is still out. who doesn't remember this?
The illustrations in this particular edition, by Tasha Tudor, capture perfectly the childhood world of the poetry--the imagination in play is wonderfully portrayed. Remember when the space under the table became a cave, or a castle, or a spaceship? These poems and the accompanying illustrations deal with these imaginary adventures that all children share in.
Purchase this book and share it with other adults and with the children in your life. If it stays with you for the rest of your life, then you have gained a treasure.

A Nice Introduction to Robert Louis Stevenson
    By Ms. N
This is a nice, extra-sturdy book for toddlers. It includes these eight complete poems: The Land of Counterpane, The Lamplighter, Happy Thought, Foreign Lands, The Cow, My Shadow, The Swing, My Bed is a Boat. Most toddlers won't sit still for the complete poems, but you can just read the first few lines until they grow into them, and they'll have fun looking at the pictures. There are various vintage illustrations in full color by different artists including one of a boy in a tree by Jessie Willcox Smith (Foreign Lands), a charming colored drawing of a Mom showing a bird to her four little ones (Happy Thought), a simple but cute picture of a little girl watching a cow (The Cow) and a picture by one of my favorite Child's Garden of Verses illustrators, Eulalie (My Bed is a Boat). Yet, the cutest picture is the one on the cover by Jessie Willcox Smith. It begs one to wonder why they didn't use her pictures for all the poems. This book is a nice size, bigger than most board books, but still small enough to be handled easily by even very young children.

    Fast-Paced Short Story
    By Amazon Customer
"Rise of a Queen: Shades of War, Shadows of the Past" is the first installment of an expected series of short stories by Jeremy Wiedmaier. It follows the character of Princess/Queen Anastasia as her world drastically changes before her and she is thrown into a position she may or may not be fully prepared for. I'm not going to go too much into the plot for this review, as this is a *short* story.

The story is a fast-pace adventure that doesn't dwell on things like details, exposition, or otherwise staying in one place for too long *usually*. This is one of it's greatest strengths but also one of it's worst weaknesses. I say that because there were many times I wanted to know more about these people and their relationships. While the story might not waste time with the life story of the antagonist Dagon, it doesn't really do much to make me care about him, either. To me, that's my biggest gripe. You don't really ever seem to care about the characters.

However, don't let that scare you away. The action is enjoyable, and the pacing is just right for someone wanting to experience a lot of things going on but in a short time. The price is fair enough, given the level of content, and I have no gripes there.

Overall, I look forward to seeing Mr. Wiedmaier grow as an author, as well as seeing where he takes the Queen in future installments. It is my sincere hope that we get to know more about the characters and the setting, because stories are much more enjoyable when we get emotionally involved. Go ahead and pick this one up if you're looking for a quick read.

Dale struggles with convoluted timelines, cats named Wozzy intent on human destruction, and life gets scarier than when you realize you're out of wine and the stores are shut.

Amanda fights a losing battle with reality as she finds herself trapped in The Ward, unsure whether she is genuinely insane or memory fragments of time travel are truly to blame for her confusion.

Only one thing stops her losing her mind completely: half-memories of a past where life was normal and time travel was just one of those things you laughed about.

    Now it's not so funny.

    Still funny at three
    By Charles A. Ray
Hexad: The Ward by Al K. Line is book three in the wacky time travel adventure of Dale and Amanda that began when Dale woke up after a night of over-imbibing that involved a convoluted and only half-remembered conversation about the possibility of time travel. After two books that chronicled journeys back and forth to the future, the past, with brief, but confusing stops in the present, told primarily (though, not entirely) from Dale’s confused point of view, book three is mainly (though again, not entirely) from Amanda’s point of view, as she (and the reader) discover a disturbing secret that reveals the central role she plays in this convoluted romp that turns science and reality on their pointed ears. Added to the mix is the critical and surprising role played by their ‘friend’, Peter, who turns out to be something else entirely.
It helps if the reader is a bit looped while trying to make sense of the many tangled plot threads as the author whipsaws back and forth, answering one perplexing question, only to raise two or three more even more tangled paradoxes that spin your brain like an out-of-control top.
If you like your time-travel stories to be scientifically plausible, this probably is not a book you’ll enjoy. On the other hand, if you enjoy the kind improbable probabilities found in books like Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, you will thoroughly enjoy this book as well. This is a book that will cause the parts of your brain that control laughter to fire on overdrive, and the ending will leave you gasping in wonderment—and wondering what Dale and Amanda will get up to next.
I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for my review.

A fitting end to an excellent time travel adveture
    By JennlyT
Full disclosure, I was provided a copy of this book by the author in exchange for an honest review.

“Hexad: The Ward” is the third book in the Hexad series by Al. K. Line. The series follows Amanda and Dale on a time travel adventure through alternate universes, getting timelines and each other mixed up and uncovering the secret to the tiny time travel device known as a Hexad (which I imagine would look very similar to a sonic screwdriver). With the direction of a mysterious character known as “The Caretaker”, a neighbor named Peter and their cat Wozzy, Amanda and Dale find themselves Whooooshing through time once again in an effort to stop mass production of Hexads at the expense of countless parallel universe Amandas.

    Confused?

This is definitely a series that you cannot start in the middle and expect to pick up, but this is a fitting conclusion the prior novels (Hexad: The Factory and Hexad: The Chamber). Having become fully ensconced in the story from about the third chapter of the first book, I eagerly delved into this installment and was not disappointed. The story starts fast and continues time hopping along as Dale attempts to rescue Amanda from where she is being held in a sinister ward full of doppelgangers 70+ years in the future. Along the way questions are answered, more are raised and the conclusion will leave you thinking weeks after you finish reading.

I highly recommend the Hexad series for anyone who like Sci Fi – Fantasy and is not afraid to get a little sideways in their story lines.

    Love it!!!
    By JillsTempted
This was a great addition and ending to the trilogy! I fell in love with Dale and Amanda in book 1 and couldn't wait to see what they would get up to in the 3rd installment. I was not disappointed as the story took off immediately into the dizzying world of time jumping and bad guys and the love story of Dale and Amanda. I loved the addition of Wozzy the cat and how he and "friend" Peter added their messiness to the mayhem of Dale and Amandas journey back and forth in time trying to fix what they had started in book 1! I'm so sad to have finished these books but am so satisfied and thrilled with the journey!! Thanks Al!!

  • The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is a collection of twelve short stories by Arthur Conan Doyle, featuring his fictional detective Sherlock Holmes. It was first published on 14 October 1892, though the individual stories had been serialised in The Strand Magazine between June 1891 and July 1892. The stories are not in chronological order, and the only characters common to all twelve are Holmes and Dr. Watson. As with all but four of the Sherlock Holmes stories, those contained within The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes are told by a first-person narrative from the point of view of Dr. Watson. In general the stories in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes identify, and try to correct, social injustices. Holmes is portrayed as offering a new, fairer sense of justice. The stories were well received, and boosted the subscriptions figures of The Strand Magazine, prompting Doyle to be able to demand more money for his next set of stories. The first story, "A Scandal in Bohemia", includes the character of Irene Adler, who, despite being featured only within this one story by Doyle, is a prominent character in modern Sherlock Holmes adaptations, generally as a love interest for Holmes. Doyle included four of the twelve stories from this collection in his twelve favourite Sherlock Holmes stories, picking "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" as his overall favourite.

The Forgotten Planet, by Murray Leinster

Beneath dense gray clouds through which no sun shone lay a forgotten planet. It was a nightmare world of grotesque and terrifying animal-plant life. Gigantic beetles, spiders, bugs and ants filled the putrid, musty earth—ready to kill and devour anything in sight.
There were men amidst this horror—men who cringed and ran from the ravening monsters and huddled in the mushroom forests at night.
Burl was one of these creatures. But one day inspiration hit Burl. He would find a weapon—he would fight back.
And with this idea the first step was taken in man’s most desperate flight for freedom in this most horrible of all worlds. But it was only a first step.

    Classic Early SF
    By From the Oregon Country
I read Forgotten Planet many, many years ago when I was in Jr. High. The story was so great, I still remember the main parts of the plot. It concerns the descendents of colonists on a planet that had undergone partial terraformation. Political trouble in the wider society leaves the original settlers stranded, and their progeny have to deal with a world gone mad, with insects grown to giant size. (An impossibility, hence the four stars.)

Follow Burl as he becomes the leader of the small tribe of humans, and leads them to their own promised land. As corny as it sounds, the reunion between man and dog is rather touching. And, without giving anything away, I will say that their isolation does not last forever.

All in all, an excellent example of mid-twentieth century science-fiction.

A metaphor for humanity's rise from savagery!
    By Paul Weiss
Earth was now a crowded planet and science had advanced to the point where terraforming remote barren planets for the future expansion of humanity was a possibility. "The seed ship Orana landed on this planet - which still had no name. It carefully infected it. It circled endlessly above the clouds, dribbling out a fine dust - the spores of every conceivable micro-organism which could break down rock to powder and turn that dust to soil. It was also a seeding of moulds and fungi and lichens and everything which could turn powdery primitive soil into stuff on which higher forms of life could grow. The Orana polluted the seas with plankton. Then it, too, went away." Leinster's skill as a writer combined with his background as a scientist - an entomologist to be precise - makes for a powerful prologue that will enthrall any lover of classic science fiction.

Subsequent passes in the millennia long terraforming process brought fish, plant life and insects to this rapidly evolving but still primitive nameless planet. But, at that point, computers being what computers are and galactic government administration, like every government before it always having been prone to error, the data on this planet was lost and no further seeding trips were completed - no birds, no mammals, no reptiles and certainly no humans. The insects, the plants and the fish were left to evolve in splendid isolation until, centuries later, a lost and crippled space-liner crashes and maroons a group of humans on the planet which is now as foreign to our human experience as one could possibly imagine - a cloud covered humid swampy environment with predatory spiders and dragonflies that had grown to enormous proportions!

Over the course of many, many generations, the humanity that emerged from a wrecked spaceship slowly devolves to a primitive savagery that must have resembled the earliest stages of human development - no art, no music, no religion, no superstition, no culture, no leisure, nothing but fear and the most basic instincts for eating, reproducing and surviving. It is up to Burl, the metaphorical innovator who stumbles onto the concepts of leadership, hunting, planning, weaponry and teamwork to begin the process of resurrecting his tribe from the depths of savagery to something resembling a modern civilization.

The science is superb (we can overlook the melodrama of the impossibly over-sized insects as being appropriate to the fiction of the day!). The writing is magnificent and the descriptive passages are compelling, mesmerizing, mellifluous and ... well, utterly descriptive ... you'll have no trouble picturing what Leinster is talking about, to be sure! But, frankly, as short as it is, "The Forgotten Planet" suffers from being over-long. A fix-up from three short stories, "The Forgotten Planet" would be better presented as a novella at half its actual length. The central development phase of the novel lapses into needless repetition and bogs down into something that many readers will be tempted to set aside.

Persevere! The novel is only 200 pages long and will pass quickly enough! There's lots of meat for discussion and food for thought in an ending that, in my opinion, was worth the struggle through the slower middle sections. For some readers, the deus ex machina flavour of the ending will strike a raw nerve and irritate. For this reader, I felt it was the only ending possible. (At this point, I tread the very fine line of not wanting to put any spoilers into the review) For me the value of the ending was in realizing what Leinster was portraying as 1950s civilization and how utterly at odds the ecological sensibilities of that day were with today's feelings. Frankly, I was absolutely horrified by the ending ... not in terms of its literary values but in terms of the social values that Leinster was conveying in the writing!

Does that sound cryptic? Good! Then I haven't given anything away. Read it for yourself and you be the judge. You won't be sorry.

    Recommended.

    This Rocked
    By Andrew Spears
Forgotten Planet was the first Murray Leinster book I ever read. I got the book in fifth grade and still have a copy twelve years later that I enjoy reading. The author was a master story teller who could wrap the reader up in worlds of incredible fiction and fantasy. Not only do I highly recommend this book, but I recommend any other books by him as well.
