A Modest Proposal (Illustrated), by Jonathan Swift

A Modest Proposal for Preventing the Children of Poor People From Being a Burthen to Their Parents or Country, and for Making Them Beneficial to the Publick, commonly referred to as A Modest Proposal, is a Juvenalian satirical essay written and published anonymously by Jonathan Swift in 1729. Swift suggests that the impoverished Irish might ease their economic troubles by selling their children as food for rich gentlemen and ladies. This satirical hyperbole mocks heartless attitudes towards the poor, as well as Irish policy in general.

Sharp Political Satire
By Bagels
Short and to the point, this is political satire at its best. While some background of Irish history is helpful, what I most like about Mr. Swift's arguments is that they can apply to any society where the group in power frets over what to do with the poor. I was in the middle of a book on the history of the Civil Rights movement in the American South when I read this, and what struck me was how Swift's satire lined up with the events a continent and centuries away from the original subject.

English Satire at it's Finest
By William Hoffknecht
So I have not bought this copy, but I have a few different copies of A Modest Proposal and it is amazing.
Jonathan Swift is really the father of english satire in literature and, along with Gulliver's Travels, this is his magnum opus.
The basic idea is a proposal for economic reform by the export and eating of babies. Now the idea is rather gruesome, but Swift is not meant to be taken literally. The idea was so show how ridiculous people were being, fighting over religion and economics, by showing an idea that, truly could have worked for the time and place if people were okay with child murder. This is nothing short of one of the most hilarious arguments into the problems with governments and economic reform that was ever written.
I highly recommend this short piece for both humor, literature, and a look into the human social mind.

The Master of Invective
By Martin Asiner
When Jonathan Swift published "A Modest Proposal" in October of 1789, he had determined to alleviate what he saw as the unnecessary plight of the starving poor of Ireland. For centuries the Irish had lived under the often harsh thumb of England which placed very many hardships on them. The English Parliament tended to view the Irish as a conquered people who existed only for the benefit of the mother country. Restrictive financial laws guaranteed that most of the revenue produced in Ireland would find its way into the coffers of the English treasury. Restrictive trade laws ensured that goods manufactured in one part of Ireland could not be transported and sold to another. And most egregious of all was the prevailing tendency of wealthy English landowners to hire landlords to run estates, villages, and apartments of all squalid sorts in Ireland while all the while charging exorbitant rents to those who could ill afford those rents. It is against the totality of what Swift saw as a massive wave of a lack of basic human care and sympathy for the downtrodden Irish that convinced him to write a tract that he hoped would draw attention to the inhuman conditions under which the Irish had to live. To accomplish this goal, Swift chose to write in a style with which he had a long familiarity--a mixing of bitter satire with biting irony. In essence, "A Modest Proposal" is an extended use of this mixture to present what would have otherwise been seen as an appalling use of cannibalism under the guise of a misplaced socially acceptable benevolence.

The structure of the essay is more than slightly reminiscent of the tracts that were then current. Authors of such tracts were fond of critiquing what they saw as the sociological issues of the day. Swift must have seen an opportunity to reveal his proposal to feed the starving masses of Ireland in a forum with which readers could instantly identify. However, where the vast majority of these other pamphlets were utterly serious in tone, Swift chose to mask his thesis using tones which range from stark realism to the outrageously ironic. The irony begins with his narrator, one who is at first portrayed as a man of benevolence, intelligence, and in possession of a strong moral conscience. The narrator commences with a grim description of Ireland's poverty-stricken female beggars who have with them numerous bedraggled ragamuffins. This opening leaves the reader to assume that the narrator's sympathies rest unerringly with these unfortunates. Almost immediately, however, Swift undercuts this incipient benevolence with the suggestion that his sympathy is mixed with other and contrasting emotions. His acknowledgment that these beggar children will eventually turn highwaymen or war with England is the first in a long line of hints, modest or otherwise, that his true purpose is an ill-defined series of pokes and retorts at England and surprisingly enough at Ireland itself. As Swift quickly enough gets to his central thesis that the babies of Ireland are to be fattened and slaughtered as food, the reader begins to wonder what he is supposed to make of Swift's narrator. As the narrator uses the soothing and disarming language of sociological rhetoric to advance his proposal to reduce Ireland's excess population by eating its youngest members, there is the initial tendency for the reader to view the narrator as the villain. However, Swift had far more in mind than merely to ridicule one man. Rather, it was his purpose to use the narrator as a sounding board by which he could assail his true targets: the wealthy of England who profit from the collective misery of Ireland and the Irish themselves who could so willingly even eagerly participate in their own degradation and ruination.

Swift's first target are the landlords "who as they have already devoured most of the Parents, seem to have the best Title to the Children." These landlords are symbolic of their masters, the landed English gentry who act like financial vacuum cleaners, sucking up the wealth of Ireland and placing it in the pockets of gentry. His second target is the entire Irish population whom he pictures as willing collaborators to their own moral and spiritual dissolution. It is by no means easy to distinguish which group holds Swift's greatest contempt. If it is true that the English are the original destroyers of the Irish social fabric, then it is probably equally true that the native Irish do not resist with any force the allure that money holds as the means to fatten the tables of the wealthy. Swift makes it clear that his view of the foibles of human weakness is based solely on the monetary. The interest of the English with reference to Ireland is based entirely on the number of pounds and shillings that can be safely extorted to the coffers in London. The only offer that the English make to the Irish is similarly based on the assumption that the Irish are a race with no sense of integrity or shame and can be manipulated by the Almighty Buck.

Toward the end of the essay, Swift's irony drifts into the truly morbid. His narrator is exasperated by the failure of anyone to come up with an alternative that is less bloody. He groans that he has no desire to entertain "other expedients," all of which are the non-ironic commonsense proposals that if given a chance might actually serve to help the Irish without resort to cannibalism. But of course, these proposals were never given the chance. By the end of the essay, the reader realizes that there was nothing "modest" about either the proposal or the narrator. The narrator's closing claim to impartiality is an ironic afterthought that a claim for benevolence does not equate to its actuality. And this may be Swift's ultimate comment on satire.

Survival of the Fittest: The Lifeboat Augusta Book 5, by Jamie Beckett

The human instinct for survival is strong, especially when the circumstances are dire. When five women and two men return to Earth as part of a disjointed and meager population, with the intent of completing a barely conceivable mission of reestablishing themselves on the surface and repopulating the planet, dire is an understatement. Short on food, tools, medicine, and options the last members of the human race face stiff odds and certain danger. As the last capsule full of humans depart their orbiting lifeboat for a return to earth's surface, nothing is as it should. Safety margins are slim, virtually every aspect of reentry and survival are in question, yet Randy Tagget, Keisha Miller and their five fellow travelers have little choice. It's time to go home and do their best. The question remains however, is their best good enough, or will they go the way of the billions who came before them and lost a celestial roll of the dice? This fifth installment brings about the conclusion of the story where life and death walk hand in hand, and perhaps the worst fate of all is waiting for the inevitable, while recognizing they are powerless to affect the outcome one way or another - or are they?

Best one yet!
By David N.
So the series ends with this great book! Definitely room to find out a bit more should you want to go there Jamie. I wont spoil it, but this was the best of the series. It had some "laugh out loud" moments (the guys will know which bit I mean), and some sad moments which make you realize the luxury we have in this day and age. Great read and it's good to know the human race is in good hands!

Fine Writer of Westerns. Carnigan is a name to remember as well as the writers!
By John
A Western to keep you on the edge waiting for the next boot to drop. This western keeps you engaged wanting you to help solve the problems. In the last week I have read several of Kenworthy's Westerns. They are enjoyable western stories and not a disappointment in the lot. Looking forward to more of his westerns. Carnigan has the makings of a fine western character and glad to see him show up in another of these fine western stories.

SIDEWINDERS, RUSTLERS AND BUSHWACKERS
By Anonymous, Bklyn N.Y.
They stole his horses, wrecked his cabin and helped themselves to his food supplies and whatever else they wanted. Carnigan captures and breaks them for the Army. The ones he had in his coral were ready to transfer to fort. This rustling of his horses leaves almost flat broke..no money is a very bad position; this was his livelihood and he immediately started tracking his herd and their tracks lead him to Sidewinder Flats..love these catchy names...located in the desert, must have a multitude of sidewinder, venous snakes one bite and your gone...Sidewinder Flats is another western desert one main street. It's a stop over for wagon trains
and a place for miners to spend money on food, drink, provisions for mining and women..Carnigan locates his herd and some nefarious doings in this town. As usual town is on pins and needles because of a man name Hoffman, who drugging unsuspecting travelers into thinking they owed him money through phony card games..Another hoax to manipulate poor people..Well Carnigan whose fought in the Great War,lived with Indians and even married a Chief's daughter had a baby boy, he was starting a family; village was raided by scalp hunters(white men)slaughtered the entire village which included his wife and son..sad sad..He tracked them down with the hunting party killed them; returned to the village to help bury the dead afterwards he left and wandered aimlessly. This is true of so many men out west who married Indian women raised families, but then there were those who abused enslaved and were just low down snakes. During his time in Sidewinder Flats he's appointed sheriff..This is a set-up, but Carnigan takes the position to find out whose behind the horse rustling..well I think you'll ENJOY the outcome..Lots of questions that aren't answered, but you still enjoy the happenings....remember shake your boots out..and keep your coffee hot

His descriptions pull you in and make you a part of the journey.
    By Amazon Customer
The reader will find that they have easily uncovered the main plot of the tale by the end of the first chapter, but that isn't what makes this story - and most of Zane Grey's other books - special, it's the trip that you take along the way. His descriptions of whatever clime they are in, of everyday struggles, adventurous travels, internal dialogues, etc.,etc., are what pull you in and make you a part of the journey.
I was a fan of Zane Grey novels as a young girl and have recently been reacquainting myself with them. I am so glad that I did. It's not necessarily deep reading, but books such as this are historically accurate. I researched this one, and the story mentioned a Mexican rebel named Orazco. He raided along the border of Arizona and Texas from 1912 to 1915. This also fits with information about the Yaqui indians and their enslavement, and virtual annihilation, during that same period. That too was part of the story. The 9th Cavalry was also mentioned, and I found that it was posted at Douglas, AZ, to guard the border at that time.
The historical accuracy makes sense considering that Arizona was one of Zane Grey's favorite places to be during this same time period.
I will add one note of caution. If you are offended by referrals to mexicans as "greasers", and referrals to "japs and chinks", then maybe this is not the book for you. But, to be honest, it is an accurate reflection of terms used during that time period.

    Corny but good
    By Arthur Manzella
Action, adventure, romance. Classic hero's journey, estranged form rich powerful father, Ivy league grad. and sportsmen hero seeks independence in remote southwest. Violence and turmoil rule the border as hero and liked minded friends "follow the code and ride for the Brand" as they attempt to bring civilization to their desert oasis. Gold, past and current relationships and quests of discovery inter wind making Desert Gold an easy great summer read. Writing is somewhat dated and racist, but no one describes the desert better than Zane Gray. My personal favorite Z. Gray desert story is Tappan's Burro. If you enjoy reading classic western tales you will not be disappointed by either story. Zane Gray is a master of his craft. A. Mandella

    Excellent scenery, great story
    By Amazon Customer
This was my first Zane Grey novel and really my first Western. I loved it. I used to live in the desert, so the haunting beauty of the desert landscape really spoke to me, but I believe this is an accessible read for anyone. The story was captivating, well written and spoke of an intimacy with the desert and the wild that is hard to capture. Yes, the book was written in an era when race and class were looked upon differently than they are now, but I think the author did a good job of reconciling the truth of humanity with the current views of the time. I enjoyed the portrayal of the rangers - stand up fellows that are hard to come by today.

  • The Sea-Wolf is a 1904 psychological adventure novel by American novelist Jack London. The book's protagonist, Humphrey van Weyden, is a literary critic who is a survivor of an ocean collision and who comes under the dominance of Wolf Larsen, the powerful and amoral sea captain who rescues him. Its first printing of forty thousand copies was immediately sold out before publication on the strength of London's previous The Call of the Wild.[1] Ambrose Bierce wrote, "The great thing—and it is among the greatest of things—is that tremendous creation, Wolf Larsen... the hewing out and setting up of such a figure is enough for a man to do in one lifetime... The love element, with its absurd suppressions, and impossible proprieties, is awful."

    Review
Novel by Jack London, published in 1904. This highly popular novel combines elements of naturalism and romantic adventure. The story concerns Humphrey Van Weyden, a refined castaway who is put to work on the motley schooner Ghost. The ship is run by brutal Wolf Larsen, who, despite his intelligence and strength, is antisocial and self-destructive. Hardened by his arduous experiences at sea, Humphrey develops strength of both body and will, protecting another castaway, Maud Brewster, and facing down the increasingly deranged Larsen. -- The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

    Review

"An extraordinarily useful edition. The supplementary and contextual materials are not only of scholarly significance themselves but also provide invaluable aids for the first-time reader of Jack London's novels."--David Holloway, Portland State University

"A fine, attractive, useful edition."--George F. Day, University of Northern Iowa

"A fine edition. I was especially impressed with the appendices and the notes section. Very helpful."--John Guzlowski, Eastern Illinois University

"Excellent edition--the comments by Sutherland illuminate the philosophical and personal underpinings of a deceptively complex work by a deceptively complex writer. Also the Explanatory Notes are quite good."--Jack Summers, Central Piedmont Community College

    "Thank you."--James R. Hepworth, Lewis-Clark State College

    Entertaining
    By AJ Duckworth
Having a Kindle helps one to discover books which otherwise would certainly have been missed. This is one of them.

It's the tale of a rather bookish "gentleman" who is virtually press-ganged to work on a sailing ship. Through vicious hardship he is faced with the choice of survival (and in the process compromising his morality) or almost certain death. The main villain, if you will, is the Captain of the ship, who's physical strength and presence is overwhelming.

Some of the language is a little archaic, but the Kindle dictionary didn't let me down.

It's well worth the read. Get past the first ten pages, and you may find it hard to put down.

A philosophical discourse wrapped around a sea adventure.
    By Dave Schwinghammer
When I first dipped into THE SEA WOLF, I was struck by its similarity to CAPTAINS COURAGEOUS. Humphrey van Weydon's ferry-steamer, The Martinez, is rammed by another ship in San Francisco Bay in a heavy fog. Van Weydon is rescued by Wolf Larsen, captain of the seal-hunter, The Ghost. Larsen refuses to take Van Weydon ashore, laughing at his offer of money. Once again, I am reminded of another famous book, MOBY DICK, and Larsen is Captain Ahab. Ruthless and single-minded, Larsen decides to make Van Weydon his cabin boy on this four month trip to provide seal pelts for fashionable American women. Van Weydon resists until Larsen catches hold of his arm and squeezes. A man of letters who freely admits never working a day in his life, Van Weydon does everything he's told from that point on, including aiding and abetting the Captain as he mistreats his crew.
Early on we learn some of Larsen's motivation when he and Van Weydon have a literary discussion. We discover that Larsen is a literary bully. He's never spent a day in school, but he reads Shakespeare, Robert Browning and John Milton. London's theme becomes clear and Larsen and van Weydon argue about immortality, van Weydon declaring that man has a soul; Larsen retorting with a Scrooge-like "Bah!" And suddenly we have the first gleanings of an existentialist novel. If there were no God, how should man behave? Larsen, seeing evil everywhere he looks, decides he will do whatever is best for him personally.
The conflict is not precisely good versus evil. Van Weydon is a weakling, a pampered rich man, a coward. There is also much to admire about Wolf Larsen. He outduels seven men during a mutiny. He's constantly reading, constantly trying to understand. When Van Weydon's story arc begins to ascend--he learns seamanship, rebuilds the ship when its masts are destroyed--we can't help but give Larsen a bit of credit. Larsen never took no for an answer, no task was too difficult.
Another interesting element in the book is London's fledgling steps toward women's liberation. Van Weydon falls in love with another castaway, Maud Brewster, and together they overcome storms, isolation on a small seal rookery, and sabotage.
I guess I knew London was a better writer than the man who wrote CALL OF THE WILD (His short story "To Build a Fire" is one of my favorites), but I wasn't expecting a philosophical discourse wrapped around a sea adventure.

Great book! I had never read Jack London before but after visiting his burnt down estate in Northern California I became interested in his writing. This book is excellent, entertaining and fast paced. The kindle edition seems not to be missing any pages. Great Free Download.

A realistic dystopian novel that makes you think
    By Elena E.G.
While lately I've been reading a lot of dystopian fiction, Geoffrey Wakeling's book Cryo is the most realistic and the one I've enjoyed the most. The Earth is dying because of what we did to Her, not because of some far-fetched, scientifically bogus premise. What Wakeling paints is real: if we keep acting the way we do, and treating our planet as if it were an unlimited resource, we are going to be in trouble. Deep trouble.

The solution offered is also realistic: again, Wakeling doesn't go and fetch impossibly built spaceships or space stations whose energy is never clear where is derived from. The only escape in Cryo's world is cryogenic freezing. It's a bet into the unknown, yet when your own world is dying, what other choice do you have?

I really enjoyed this book, from the premise to the world building, which is truly realistic and scary. Winning the lottery propels the protagonist John into fame, turning him into a hero despite himself, and he grows throughout the book. Despite the media being oblivious of what's truly happening on the planet, you can still see the consequences of pollution and a dying Earth through John's (and the surrounding characters') everyday life: fake skies; water tokens (loved this idea, BTW!); smog.

Cryo is one of those reads that stays with you long time, making you think about the consequences of our lifestyle if we don't start acting soon.

What Is a Chance for a New Life worth
    By Bill Matthews
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.

As I began reading i was thinking about news reports I've seen about people winning a lot of money in a lottery and how often it had a negative affect on their lives. In this story John wins a different type of lottery and the author, if the first part of the book, explores how he reacts. John's girl friend and his family are also affected. His girlfriend is happy for the notoriety but his family can only think about themselves. The prize is that some of the 50 winners will be frozen for 50 years and then awaken to a new and wonderful world.

Considering the sad shape that the world is in, with London as a setting - and it is certainly not a London that I would want to visit again - the prospect of a clean world would be hard to resist.

In the second part, the winners go through exhaustive training and it appears the number of candidates may be dwindling.

The final part is when the sleepers awake - and there the story gets interesting ... and I'll say no more other than I'm ready for the second novel.

This is a wonderful book for those who love dystopian fiction.
    By Greg
Imagine a world beset by over-population and climate disaster -- one where humanity has ravaged the planet in the most inhumane of ways. Then imagine having the chance to get out of the disaster and into -- hopefully -- a better world. All you have to do is be chosen to be frozen. And therein lies the premise of the novel. Our protagonist has won the lottery and been chosen as a candidate for cryogenic freezing -- but only if he makes the grade and becomes a selectee. And once chosen, what will become of him and those chosen for survival after they are defrosted in their new surroundings? Can they trust all that they have been assured of, all that they have been promised? That is the question -- one I dare not answer lest I spoil the plot for you.

What do I like best about this novel? I would have to say the fact that it is realistic about how we as a species are most likely to survive -- not because of some dramatic new technology that saves us all, but rather by the survival of a few through use of technologies that are advanced enough to save that handful.

  • Faust is a tragic play in two parts usually known in English as Faust, Part One and Faust, Part Two. Although rarely staged in its entirety, it is the play with the largest audience numbers on German-language stages. Faust is Goethe's magnum opus and considered by many to be one of the greatest works of German literature.

The earliest forms of the work, known as the Urfaust, were developed between 1772 and 1775; however, the details of that development are not entirely clear. Urfaust has twenty-two scenes, one in prose, two largely prose and the remaining 1,441 lines in rhymed verse. The manuscript is lost, but a copy was discovered in 1886.

No page numbers, blank white spine, blurry pixelated cover, terrible text formatting. How could anyone uprate this?
    By Jonah Rusling
Great story but this printed book is terrible. If you want a book with a blank white spine, blurry pixelated cover, and no page numbers of any kind, this is for you. I'm not sure who set the type for this book but it's really disorganized. It's like someone just took a PDF and pasted it into INdesign and sent it off to be printed without looking at the pages. Chapter names appear half way down the page or wherever else they end up, sometimes in bold, sometimes not. Sometimes sentences repeat for no reason on new text lines. There's even a few points when it looks like someone tried to italicize the text using the < i > < /i > html code. Yes this code is printed in the book... WHY?

Also if you want the whole story you'll need parts 1 & 2 but this book only contains part 1...

    How amazing...
    By Steven
That's what you get for a whopping $9! What a great deal, folks; a book that looks like it was sent to a really shady printing shop and was compiled by someone who just ripped off the text from an online e-book.

In all seriousness, please choose another publisher to order from. The physical book itself is nothing how it looks online. I was so excited to get this book, but when I opened the package I was very disappointed. The cover is extremely pixellated/blurry, as if someone just took a picture off the internet and slapped it on. The paper is low-quality, and the text is formatted really strangely, like if you just typed it up on a word doc.

Amazon, this is the first time you have failed me. :( But yeah, don't order this specific product.

    By Bluebird
Beware of CreateSpace books if you care at all about how your books look and feel. These are cheap reproductions of books that are available now on the Internet. The cover art isn't even in focus on this one. Unfortunately Amazon not only doesn't make this clear at the top of the page (you have to look at the publisher info to find it), but it also places this book at the top of the list when you search for Faust. This is the second time this has happened to me with Amazon. The good thing is that they credited my account immediately when I complained, and I was able to find a much better version of the book with a bit of careful searching. If I didn't care about the aesthetic experience of reading I'd have gone all-digital by now.

  • Madame Bovary (1856) is the French writer Gustave Flaubert's debut novel. The story focuses on a doctor's wife, Emma Bovary, who has adulterous affairs and lives beyond her means in order to escape the banalities and emptiness of provincial life. Though the basic plot is rather simple, even archetypal, the novel's true art lies in its details and hidden patterns. Flaubert was a notorious perfectionist and claimed always to be searching for le mot juste ("the precise word"). When the novel was first serialized in La Revue de Paris between 1 October 1856 and 15 December 1856, public prosecutors attacked the novel for obscenity. The resulting trial in January 1857 made the story notorious. After Flaubert's acquittal on 7 February 1857, Madame Bovary became a bestseller in April 1857 when it was published as a single volume. The novel is now considered Flaubert's masterpiece, as well as a seminal work of literary realism and one of the most influential novels. British critic James Wood writes in How Fiction Works: "Flaubert established for good or ill, what most readers think of as modern realist narration and his influence is almost too familiar to be visible".

    From the Publisher
This exquisite novel tells the story of one of the most compelling heroines in modern literature--Emma Bovary. Unhappily married to a devoted, clumsy provincial doctor, Emma revolts against the ordinariness of her life by pursuing voluptuous dreams of ecstasy and love. But her sensuous and sentimental desires lead her only to suffering corruption and downfall. A brilliant psychological portrait, Madame Bovary searingly depicts the human mind in search of transcendence. Who is Madame Bovary? Flaubert's answer to this question was superb: "Madame Bovary, c'est moi." Acclaimed as a masterpiece upon its publication in 1857, the work catapulted Flaubert to the ranks of the world's greatest novelists. This volume, with its fine translation by Lowell Bair, a perceptive introduction by Leo Bersani, and a complete supplement of essays and critical comments, is the indispensable Madame Bovary.

For my money, the preferred translation of Flaubert's novel
    By Lawrance Bernabo
When I was teaching World Literature we began class each year reading Gustave Flaubert's "Madame Bovary." Unfortunately, this is the one novel that most needs to be read in its original language since Flaubert constructed each sentence of his book with the precision of a poet. As an example of the inherent problems of translation I would prepare a handout with four different versions of the opening paragraphs of "Madame Bovary." Each year my students would come to the same conclusion that I had already reached in selecting which version of the book they were to read: Lowell Bair's translation is the best of the lot. It is eminently readable, flowing much better than most of its competitors. Consequently, if you are reading "Madame Bovary" for pleasure or class, this is the translation you want to track down.
Flaubert's controversial novel is the first of the great "fallen women" novels that were written during the Realism period ("Anna Karenina" and "The Awakening" being two other classic examples). It is hard to appreciate that this was one of the first novels to offer an unadorned, unromantic portrayal of everyday life and people. For some people it is difficult to enjoy a novel in which they find the "heroine" to be such an unsympathetic figure; certainly the events in Emma Bovary's life have been done to death in soap operas. Still, along with Scarlett O'Hara, you have to consider Emma Bovary one of the archetypal female characters created in the last 200 years of literature. "Madame Bovary" is one of the greatest and most important novels, right up there with "Don Quixote" and "Ulysses." I just wish I was able to read in it French.

In Love With Love and Doomed From the Start
    By A Customer
In this masterpiece of French literature, Gustave Flaubert tells the tale of Emma Bovary, née Roualt, an incurably romantic woman who finds herself trapped in an unsatisfactory marriage in a prosaic bourgeois French village, Yonville-l'Abbaye.
Her attempts to escape the tedium of her life through a series of adulterous affairs are thwarted by the reality that the men she chooses to love are shallow and self-centered and thus are unable to love anyone but themselves.
In love with a love that can never be and dreadfully overstretched financially, Emma finds herself caught in a downward spiral that can only end in tragedy.
Part of the difficulty, and the pleasure, of reading Madame Bovary comes from the fact the Flaubert refuses to embed his narrative with a moral matrix; he refuses, at least explicitly, to tell the reader, what, if any, moral lesson he should draw from the text.
It is this lack of moral viewpoint that made Madame Bovary shocking to Flaubert's contemporaries, so much so that Flaubert found himself taken to court for the novel's offenses to public and religious decency. Although today's readers will find no such apparent scandals in the book, they will still be challenged to make sense of both Emma and her story.
It is quite common to see Emma Bovary as silly, extravagant and much too romantically inclined. An avid consumer of romantic literature (a habit into which the heroine was indoctrinated in her convent school upbringing), Emma has made the morbid mistake of buying into the notion of romantic love in its fullest sense, and the mortal mistake of believing she can reach its fulfillment in her own life.
As such, Emma Bovary becomes a tragic figure of almost mythic proportion. Far from being foolish and self-indulgent, Emma is the victim of her own fecund imagination. A lesser woman would have been satisfied in the constrained world Emma inhabits, a world of sewing and teas and parties. But Emma is possessed of both splendid passions and tremendous energy; an artist and a rebel in her challenge to the priorities and ideals of her age.
Madame Bovary is an unusual novel in the sense that it has given its name to its own psychological condition: bovarysme, the condition in which we delude ourselves as to who and what we really are and as to life's potential to fulfill.
In this sense, Madame Bovary becomes the story of one woman's faulty perception of reality. In an early version of the novel, Flaubert included a scene at the ball at La Vaubyessard in which Emma is seen looking out at the landscape surrounding the house through colored panes of glass, a scene clearly meant as a representation of Emma's projection onto the world of an illusory and faulty model of reality.
Emma cannot, or will not, see the world as it is, since she is constantly imposing onto it, and herself, the criteria of romantic literature. Flaubert has thus written a supremely romantic novel about the dangers of reading supremely romantic novels!
Romantics, Flaubert seems to be saying, have no reasonable hope of ever seeing their fondest dreams come to fruition.
This is, indeed, a recurrent pattern in the novel: Emma dreams of one thing but gets something else entirely. Marriage, motherhood, and ultimately, adultery, all fall short of Emma's expectations and she appears to be a woman doomed to one disappointment after another.
Although Emma believes her marriage will fulfill her romantic expectations, Charles certainly fails to live up to Emma's hopes, and even Rodolphe, with his expensive riding boots, gloves and substantial income is eventually considered coarse and vulgar by Emma. Léon, the very essence of the young, romantic artist, leaves Emma when he is made premier clerc, and Emma finds she much come to the realization that even adultery contains "toutes les platitudes du mariage."
The foregoing certainly begs the question: are Emma's expectations too high or is life fundamentally deficient?
The society portrayed in Madame Bovary is one stratified in terms of class, and this is a book about the bourgeoisie, a portrait of class in the process of finding and defining itself and its role in society.
The novel is filled with scenes of buying and selling and even personal relationships fall under the sway of financial considerations.
What is particularly notable about Emma is her extravagance: she spares no thought for expense and consumes far beyond her means. Rejecting good economic management, thrift and hard work, Emma dedicates herself to style extraordinaire and lavishes expensive presents on her "man of the moment."
The world described in Madame Bovary is an extremely enclosed and restricted one and images of entrapment are abundant throughout the book. Emma's first marital home is described as "trop étroite;" her marriage to Charles is likened to "l'ardillon pointu de cette courroie complexe qui la bouclait de tous les côtes."
These restrictive images clearly demonstrate how confining Emma finds her world. Trapped in the dusty and damp home with its "éternel jardin," the highly imaginative Emma sees no escape.
It is interesting to note that when Emma does attempt to escape the confines of femininity, society and marriage through adultery, many of the scenes take place al fresco. (The first act of adultery with Rodolphe takes place in a forest and her later relationship with Léon contains a scene on a river.)
Later scenes, however, reveal the degradation inherent in Emma's acts and she finds herself confined to bedrooms that are sorely reminiscent of the restrictions of her married life. The fiacre ride with Léon in Rouen, in particular, is anticipatory of entrapment. For Emma, adultery eventually becomes as much of a prison as is marriage and family life.
Another recurrent image is that of the window. This can be interpreted as Emma's desire for escape or as a reaffirmation of her entrapment and powerlessness. The window opens onto a space of which poor Emma can only sit and dream; it serves as a frame for both her dissatisfaction and her fantasies.
In order to enjoy Madame Bovary to the fullest extent, it must be read in the original French. This is an absolute for Flaubert was an author who made full use of the potential offered by his native tongue. Although many translations are superb, nothing can match the original French in its poetic prose and lush descriptions.
Many interpretations of this wonderful and timeless novel are possible and all, no doubt, hold some validity. Therein lies the book's genius. Of one thing, though, we have no doubt: luscious Emma Bovary was, indeed, a victim. Whether of herself or of a repressive society matters little.

The Apogee of the French Novel . . . At Least Until Proust
    By A Customer
Let's begin with Nabokov's "Lectures on Literature," where he introduces "Madame Bovary" as follows: "The book is concerned with adultery and contains situations and allusions that shocked the prudish philistine government of Napoleon III. Indeed, the novel was actually tried in a court of justice for obscenity. Just imagine that. As if the work of an artist could ever be obscene." Written over a five-year period, "Madame Bovary" was published serially in a magazine in 1856 where, despite editorial attempts to purge it of offensive material, it was cited for "offenses against morality and religion." Fortunately, Flaubert won his case and "Madame Bovary" remains to this day one of the masterpieces of French and world literature. Indeed, in Nabokov's view, the novel's influence is notable: "Without Flaubert, there would have been no Marcel Proust in France, no James Joyce in Ireland. Chekhov in Russia would not have been quite Chekhov."
The story of Emma Bovary is well known and uncomplicated. Set in the provincial towns of Tostes and Yonville (it is subtitled "Patterns of Provincial Life"), with adulterous interludes in Rouen, "Madame Bovary" narrates the life of Charles Bovary and Emma Rouault. Charles, an "officier de sante"--a licensed medical practitioner without a medical degree--meets Emma while tending to her injured father. Charles is married at that time to the first Madame Bovary, also called Madame Dubuc, a widow and thin, ugly woman who dominates the mild-mannered Charles from the very beginning. "It was his wife [Madame Dubuc] who ruled: in front of company he had to say certain things and not others, he had to eat fish on Friday, dress the way she wanted, obey her when she ordered him to dun nonpaying patients. She opened his mail, watched his every move, and listened through the thinness of the wall when there were women in his office."
When Madame Dubuc dies a few short years after their marriage, it appears that Charles is fortunate, for he is not only freed from the shrewish oppression of his wife, but enabled to court and marry the beautiful Emma. It is the eight-year marriage of Charles and Emma that embodies the tale of "Madame Bovary," a tale marked by Emma's ennui, her dissatisfaction with the unsatisfied yearnings of bourgeois marriage in a small provincial town, her steadily growing sensual insatiability, her adulteries with a series of men. It is this marriage, too, that gives us one of literature's great cuckolds, Charles Bovary.
"Madame Bovary" has often been described as a realistic novel and, insofar as it tells a seemingly ordinary tale of sensual longing and adultery while, at the same, time depicting characters and sensibilities typical of bourgeois, philistine rural France during the reign of Louis Phillipe, it is grimly realistic. It is also, however, a deeply psychological novel, one in which Flaubert brilliantly probes the feelings, the sensations, the romantic longings and dreamscapes of Emma Bovary. Above all, "Madame Bovary" is the apogee of the French novel prior to Proust's Parnassian achievement, a novel whose poetic language and artistic rendering transcend mere narrative and elevate Flaubert's work to that of high literary art, a novel for the ages. Read it in the original French if you can; if not, then read it in Frances Steegmuller's outstanding English translation.
