When Artemio Battaglia joins the Regia Aeronautica to become a fighter pilot at the beginning of World War II, he's inspired by the romanticized patriotism of the Fascists. His idealism is shattered when he witnesses atrocities committed against indigenous populations in North Africa, and the officials he informs do nothing to stop the murderers. Their response is to transfer him to the most dangerous front in the war. A disillusioned Artemio returns to Piacenza to find his city occupied by ruthless German soldiers. He enlists in the war again, this time as a member of the Red Brigades. With a renewed sense of purpose, Artemio repeatedly places himself in peril, sabotaging German supply lines and giving aid to the Allies. But when his comrades capture a downed Italian pilot and schedule a hasty execution, Artemio recoils at the senseless violence. Once again, he is called to act in accordance with his conscience and embarks on a bold plan to set things right.

Review
Based on the actual World War II experience of the author's great uncle, a pilot in the Regia Aeronautica, Heaven Cries conveys the disillusionment, anguish, and indomitable spirit of people betrayed first by their elected leader, then by their ally. It shows with chilling realism how the desire for freedom can become a commitment to overthrow an oppressive regime. Most significantly, it reminds us of the true spring waters of freedom: hope, kindness, courage, and love.  Nicholas Gage, author of Eleni

Heaven Cries, a novel of WWII, takes the reader into an authentic portrayal of aerial warfare in North Africa and guerrilla tactics in Italy. Author Stephan Silva makes the practical and spiritual changes in the life of its protagonist, Artemio Battaglia, believable. A satisfying 5-star read. -- Donald Michael Platt, author of Close to the Sun and the Rocamora Series.

A must read for any history buff! You will find yourself transported to another time and place with the descriptions of weaponry and military tactics. This is not just a story about WWII, though. There is a much deeper purpose to the novel that explores the complexity of human motivation, behavior, beliefs, nature, and above all, hope. The protagonist is an endearing yet flawed character trying to find the things that all of us strive for in life. If you're looking for your next page turner, give Heaven Cries a try.

Italy's War
By Christina Paige
Artemio, an idealistic young man, leaves his village home and becomes a pilot, finding romance along the way with a beautiful, impulsive actress. When Italy becomes involved in World War Two , he dreams of glorious aerial battles against honorable fighter pilots, but ambition and betrayal leave him stranded in the desert, behind enemy lines. What happens next places his very soul in jeopardy. Artemio struggles to redeem himself, becoming a hero in the eyes of countrymen even as he questions the direction his country is taking.

This novel depicts the dilemma the Italian people faced in World War II. Originally, armed forces were fighting for Italy’s colonial expansion in Africa. Their integrity becomes compromised by Mussolini’s alliance with Adolph Hitler and Nazi Germany, with terrible consequences for Italians. Before long, Italy is embroiled in a war on its own soil. Ironically, the alliance with Germany makes Italy a target for the Americans and British bombers, even as German troops murder Italian citizens. Worst of all, political factions arise to fill the void of government collapse. The most brutal are the Communist partisans, who give and receive no quarter in their struggle against the Nazi presence. These irregular forces have an eye on post war Europe and wish Italy to be placed behind the Iron Curtain as a Russian satellite nation.
Based on the actual World War II experience of the author’s Great uncle, a pilot in the Regia Aeronautica, Heaven Cries conveys the disillusionment, anguish, and indomitable spirit of people betrayed first by their elected leader, then by their allies. It shows with chilling realism how the desire for freedom can become a slavish commitment to an oppressive regime. Most significantly, it reminds us of the true spring waters of freedom: hope, kindness, courage, and love.
In the dark light of recent events, this history is particularly relevant. Heaven Cries is not simply a tale of our past: it is very much our present.

My best read for summer 2016
By Amazon Customer
This book had me bonded with the conflicted protagonist, Artemio, from the start. I, as a second generation Greek American, have relatives in Crete who lived and died through the second world war, in which young, valiant men were killed, naturally inspired into guerilla warfare or starved to death in Athens during a period of tremendous upheaval, confrontation, and deprivation. I know this because I have kept close and direct contact with my relatives there over the years.
Many good men falter in these times. “Occurrence, do not be ashamed of your appearance. A man’s true mettle is his ability to rise from the ashes like a phoenix and refashion the rubble of his spirit and body to become an even greater man than he was before.” As far as I am concerned, the Italians were a breed apart, with almost impossible choices during this complex time of nationalism, pride, but also corruption, and a doomed alliance with Germany where the bilious stories of violence of the most horrendous sort, played out under the flag of Nazism and Fascism. The human elements of conscience and redemption burst through in this debut novel, and I found myself literally weeping during certain parts, in which other readers will certainly recognize. This is the kind of writing that kept me reading from one chapter to the next. As a history buff, I found this novel both riveting and educational. The author clearly was well aware of the political, cultural, and specific aircraft and weaponry of the times, which I personally hold interest in.

Thanks, Doctor Silva, for your story, your research and your honesty about the reality of the times. This was an immensely enjoyable read.

Marching Down the Magic Road

In the wake of an apocalyptic alien attack on Quaba, the young prophets of ConFree struggle to rebuild their shattered nation. Charges of desertion and treason are the least of their worries. Delta Research is no more; ConFree now faces an endless war with Dark Haven. An embittered Prophet is alone, assigned to a new regiment, pledged to victory or death against all-powerful enemies. He is soon lost in the titanic struggle.

Ordered home from the battlefield, Prophet is reassigned to Galactic Information. As dark dreams intrude, allied Biogens call for help from ConFree. The threat is universal: a shape-shifter from the edge of the galaxy is poised to destroy mankind. The creature's siren song may result in self-extinction for human civilization unless it is stopped.

Prophet and his comrade Arie respond, but the situation is more complex than imagined. Prophet finds himself blood pledged to the Biogens, in the grip of merciless demons, marching down a magic road, following the footsteps of the Gods with faith and love and courage. Fear no evil, Bees says, for you are already in the land of death – and you are the light in the dark.

After the attach on Quaba, the members of Delta Research have been arrested on charges of desertion and treason.
By Chris Hammond
After the attach on Quaba, the members of Delta Research have been arrested on charges of desertion and treason. As the actions of Delta Research members are reviewed it is determined that after what they accomplished before and during the attack, they were not guilty and slowly the members of Delta Research are released but Delta Research is no more. As the members are scattered to different places, ConFree takes the fight to the Darks.

But worse things may have been found. The Biogens find a creature locked away in a ship, unable to escapte. They ship on a never ending trip heading to deep space. This creature has the capacity to destroy civilizations or help them. During an attach on the ship by Dark forces, they are forced to release the creature to escape, only know they will have to find out what the consequences are from the creatures release.

The Fate of the World Rests on Their Shoulders

The 419th will be tested to their limits with the most important mission of their lives
... the preservation of the human race ... In the future, medical science has perfected the process of rebuilding a mortally-wounded person using organs and limbs created using their own DNA.  The military version of the process results in "reclaimed" personnel that are bigger, faster and stronger than regular, non-reclaimed personnel.

The 419th Combined Assault Unit of the US Marine Corps consists of both regular and reclaimed Marines, male and female. The Unit is commanded by reclaimed Major John Coles and his second-in-command, reclaimed Captain Jeri  Blake.  Captain Samantha "Sam" Carpenter, a regular Marine, is the commander of the 3rd Element of the 117th Armored Calvary Regiment attached to 419th.
In the hopes of removing the human element in battle, a Chinese research team had created a genetically-engineered warrior. However, its savagery and aggressiveness made it impossible to control.  After a disastrous battle, resulting in the loss of nearly 3,000 US Marines and Chinese troops; the UN mandated a ban on genetic bio-weapon research. Jeri's reclamation was a result of that horrific engagement.

The Vietnamese decide to ignore this mandate and recreate the beasts to sell to whoever would pay their price.  The U.S. and China are again tasked with destroying this unspeakable menace to humankind.  So, Jeri must once again face the monsters which all but destroyed her before.  She is forced to face her personal demons of near-paralyzing fear and doubts about her abilities to perform her duties as a Marine Commander.

A pretty remarkable story and writing!
By Robert Wasilewski
Having been an avid sci-fi and military fiction reader for most of my life (60 now, little time for it these days), it was a GREAT pleasure to read this book. The writing is pretty much flawless, the characters rich and believable, and the plot flows right along with no loose ends or "fluff"(I hate that). The characters are surprisingly real, and so is the plot! I was surprised that I enjoyed the "romantic" elements of the story so much, not my usual cup of tea but very well done part of the writing. I found the story almost a "future history" type, being that the technologies, political and social situations, and story are all too believable and possible in the near future! It was all something that I could see as really happening. That says a lot.
Although I have so little time for fiction reading in my life, I will almost certainly read this again. As well, I sure am looking forward to the next one in this series! And there had better be one!! Shoot, it would make a fantastic movie. Hey Hollywood, take note! Anyway, I highly recommend it.

It's seems like a good story with good bones
By Jackie B
Received a free copy for review. Book definitely needs a lot more editing, lots of spelling mistakes which made it a tough read for me. It's seems like a good story with good bones, but it's a heavy/dark sort of story. Not the type of book I normally pick out to read (I prefer happy/funny romance/paranormal romance). I didn't read very far into the book, it was just to heavy for me. The right reader will appreciate this book, especially if it gets re-edited.

An Entertaining Read for the Younger Crowd
By Retired Techie
Since Amazon.com has emailed me a couple of times to review this book, I figured I better read it. As I did, I found it a very easy read and that it flowed quite well. The more I read it, I felt it had to be aimed at a younger audience and on the book's web site it is listed for: Ages 8 and up. I'd say the 'up' is probably 12 or 13.

As such, I feel it is an entertaining read for those younger readers. The main characters basically go through the portals one by one is a prescribed order, meet the inhabitants there, sometimes after going through some challenging tasks. In the end, they make friends with the people, go back to the portal site and on through the next portal. The seventh and last portal takes them to a wondrous place they do not want to leave.

And they live happily ever after.

A fun read.
By Amazon Customer
Sympathetic main characters. The plot builds well, with some logic/mystery sense. Most ancillary characters are enjoyable, though could have been explored in a bit more depth. A fun read.

Ordered for a Friend
By Paula B.
I actually ordered this book for a friend of mine. Her husband recently passed away and she was going through some of his books that he had and ran across this book. She read the book and said it was great, even though it was missing a page in one of the chapters. She is the librarian in our Christian school and wanted to add this book to the library. She was delighted with the book and plans on trying to replace the page that is missing in her copy by typing the words that are missing and inserting it into her own book that she is keeping for herself, (sentimental value). Based on her reaction, she was very pleased with the purchase, and I was because of the great price and relatively quick time that I received it.

It's full of evil and their folklores have them biting their teeth at night, whilst boarding over their windows and sleeping with crosses lining their walls hoping that morning will come and the dark shadows will once again be banished back to hell by the murderously oppressive sun.

Outside Hell
By Jessica Mitchell
A boy with a past that he doesn't know about, Adolf Hitler being controlled by voices in his head and a bunch of vampires trying to survive.
Dracus is a orphan, since his mother died. He was found by a bunch of hunter who by a stroke of luck made a kill and covered him in its blood, to get him into the walls of the last remaining town of Eldor. But while cleaning he makes big discoveries of himself and that of the last people of Eldor. But what to do? He wants to help but is unsure how to do so, without bringing attention to himself yet.
Then we come into contact with a vampire named Sorchek who is doing evil deeds with Kaine and Regina on his trail to stop him and get revenge for the what he had done to Kaine in the past. But tragedy strikes again close to Kaine's heart and now the search becomes more than revenge. But what Kaine doesn't know, is Regina has a bracelet from Dracus to call him in any time of need. Will she be able to trigger it in time to help them all?
Adolf Hitler is being ordered to do deeds from the voices in his head. During this time he starts the wars and also joins up with other mind controlled leaders. But he also wants to capture, control and dissect Satan's children (vampires). To get his own super soldiers and the key to their immortality. Will he succeed?
There are lots and lots of twists and turns in this book. Besides more than I talked about. But read the other books before reading this one or you will be lost.

Amazing story !!!!
By Roostermama
Love love love this book was given to me for an honest review Mr Milo Spires is an artist in his own creativity of writing. This book Outside Hell is stand alone but should read the others first. One hell of a war between the devil. Laouse, Draco Kaine his wife Regina who was shot sent to hell then excapted from him to be recaptured then freed again. Felt so much love and hate for the characters that I actually cried at times and felt myself there and fighting along with them. The twist and turns this book takes keep you interested to the next part even Hitlar didn't have a chance with all the magic flying around. I do hope I peaked your interest without giving away the plots. Do read you won't be sorry Great Job Milo Spires. I do hope their is another book to follow

You have to read this one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
By A Customer
You gotta read this one!!!! It's almost the same thing as the Bucaneers series and they're awesome! Devora doesn't know that Captain Bruce Hawkins is Don Nicklas Valentin, the guy she has to marry. I think that really exciting. I have read most of Linda Chaikin's books and I like her writings the best!!!! Keep it up Linda!!!!!!

Engaging, wonderful, exciting,and romantic
By Jennie
I really enjoyed this book! Linda Chaikin did a fantastic job on writing about pirates, buccaneers, the Spanish Inquisition, life in Spain and conflicts that those people faced back then. The main characters Devora and Bruce were well-developed and realistic. I tried to put myself in Devora's slippers to discover how it felt to have a mother that abandoned me, then all of a sudden show up and turn my life upside-down. I really admire someone like Devora who uses her Christian faith to sustain her during her trials. I would like a husband like Bruce who unlike his father is a gallant, dashing, and somewhat roguish man, with a teasing nature. I wonder how it would feel to be a half-English and half-Spanish especially when the two countries were at odds with one another and to be rejected as a little boy by his ruthless father. I definitely going to read this series more than once!

Colorful and Engaging!
By Judi Meadows
A friend gave me this book and I loved it. I hope one day to write as well as Linda does. Regardless of whether or not she got the crinoline skirt part right for the time setting, this book was very engaging.
Imagine being a young woman in love and being swept away by a mother--who's barely been a part of your life--who takes you to a place that's foreign to you, in order that you can marry a Spanish don to further the family? Well that's exactly what Devora's mother does. Out of the blue, Catherina Radburn shows up in Barbados to take Devora away from her beloved home and uncle, and the man she wants to marry--so that she can marry a man of her families choosing. Someone she's never met! Besides that, Devora wants to work alongside her uncle in Barbados.
Her world is suddenly turned upside down, her faith tested. Will it sustain her--even when she's thrown into a world she knows little about and toward a man she has decided in her heart that she wants nothing to do? Unknowingly, Devora has already met that man, only he's going by a different name and she is unwillingly drawn to him. Will she learn his true identity and will she find the strengh within to follow her heart? You'll have to read the book to find out! And I heartily recommend it!

  • The Idiot (Russian: Идио́т, Idiot) is a novel written by the 19th-century Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky. It was first published serially in The Russian Messenger between 1868 and 1869. The Idiot, alongside some of Dostoyevsky's other works, is often considered one of the most brilliant literary achievements of the "Golden Age" of Russian literature. The 26-year-old Prince Lev Nikolayevich Myshkin returns to Russia after spending several years at a Swiss sanatorium. Scorned by the society of Saint Petersburg for his trusting nature and naiveté, he finds himself at the center of a struggle between a beautiful kept woman and a virtuous and pretty young girl, both of whom win his affection. Unfortunately, Myshkin's very goodness precipitates disaster, leaving the impression that, in a world obsessed with money, power, and sexual conquest, a sanatorium may be the only place for a saint.

    From Publishers Weekly
Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky, justly acclaimed for their translations of such Russian classics as Gogol's Dead Souls and Dostoyevski's The Brothers Karamazov, Crime and Punishment and Notes from Underground, have now undertaken another major Dostoyevski novel, The Idiot. Their trademark style fresh, crisp and faithful to the original (bumps and blemishes included) brings the story of nave, truth-telling Prince Myshkin to new life. As is true of their other translations of Dostoyevski, this will likely be the definitive edition for years to come. Intro. by Pevear.

    Doestoevsky's Master Work
    By Sean O'Neill
What could have prompted me to first read "The Idiot" at age 13 on a beach vacation with my family I can not recall. What I do recall, however, is that I was fully engrossed day after day in a world of ideas, people and places far beyond my experience. Having now just "re-read" it 39 years later (following Crime and Punishment and Brothers Karamazov), I know I couldn't possibly have digested all of its ideas at that age: atheism vs. Christianity; nihilism vs. a dying social order; Eros vs. charity; truth vs. artifice; id vs.ego and superego. And yet, I also sense I know what captivated me even then.

The characters in this novel, though usually explained as symbolic of the ideas they represent, are yet the most vividly realized characters I had ever "read" then, and still. The real-time manner in which they are drawn and followed is as if the author simply recorded their actions and conversations as and where they happened. We get to know who these people are, not through narrative description, but, as if by "candid camera", observing what they say, withhold, do, and fail to do. What emerges are fascinating, at times frightening and at times affectionate portraits of real and troubled humans: Lizaveta, the flighty, but loving society mother; General Epanchin, the successful but utterly conventional man of the house; Aglaya, the childish but delightful beauty who resents her sister's and parents' expectation for her; Ganya, who wants money and love, but plays the wounded martyr while more obviously blaming his father for his failures at both; Ivolgin, the pathetic figure of an aging man who aches for dignity and respect but who's former glory is long gone and mostly imagined; and Lebedev, the likeable sycophant and name-dropper.

The more central characters to the events, the murderously passionate Rogozhin, and the self-scorning beauty Nastasya, are more starkly drawn. But even those portraits are created not through direct thought narration or narrative description, but by the author's leading us to read between and behind the lines of their words, conversations with others, and public "displays".

As for the Prince himself, he is often said to symbolize the human side of a Christ-like man. That, of course, is true; but (as can also be seen in Aloysha, the hero of The Brothers Karamazov), he is as much child-like as he is like a Christ. The Prince's honesty, naiveté, trust, and simple affection for those around him, are all qualities that he seems to maintain as a man because he is really only entering the "adult" world of social Petersburg after a long and sheltered upbringing among younger children in Switzerland. When he enters this tangled world of adult competition, insecurity, envy, ambition and intrigue, though much older, he's in the most essential ways still the child that was sent by his benefactor to Switzerland for help with his illness.

One comes away with the strong impression (reinforced by the portrait of Aloysha, hero of Brothers Karamazov) that Dostoevsky saw children as embodying the ideal of spirit that we strive to maintain or regain as adults. The prince's obvious affection for the loyal young boy Kolya and the compassionate young girl Vera, in this book, and similar bonds between his hero Aloysha and the children in Karamozov Brothers, show Dostoevsky's admiration for the child in man.

The Idiot shows what happens when a simple, trusting and exceptionally compassionate child-man enters the more corrupt world of human adulthood without the experience to navigate, or even to perceive, the traps and snares laid by more worldly humans whose innocence has been chipped or stripped bare by ambition, envy, greed, despair or old age.

On another level, The Idiot is an allegory for the Christ story itself- with Prince Myshkin coming from the Swiss sanatorium into the "the world" of Petersburg with a mission to live among, love and save its people. The complications of heart and mind when his human emotions unexpectedly collide with the more selfish and less willing of those around him are at the center of this story of a second coming re-imagined.

One might be left, at the awfully tragic end of this novel, with the idea that Dostoevsky himself was of the same mind as Ippolit, the suicidal atheist, who his hero befriends of compassion. That is, from the disastrous conclusion, one might think that Dostoevsky believes that Holbein's painting (central to the story) of the disfigured and lifeless body of Christ the corpse, shows the impossibility of a divine spirit in (and after) a wretched human existence. Yet, it is with such affection that he describes the many and contradictory (and often delightful) sides of the "ordinary" people in this story, that I felt the opposite: that is, that Dostoevsky recognized not just in the tragically compassionate Prince, and the young Vera and Kolya, but also in the few and fleeting glimpses of love, friendship, compassion and even real dignity of the fallen or struggling others, that there is a redemptive force that underpins the human experience. If there were any doubt of that after reading this novel, it is laid to rest in the Brothers Karamazov, whose likewise tragic denouement yet ends on a note more obviously reflective of Dostoevsky's ultimate optimism.

Crime and Punishment, a psychological crime story, showed Dostoevsky's incredible genius for "writing" the inside of the human mind. Brothers Karamozov was a morality tale that laid out, on a grand scale, yet in great detail, the most essential questions of good and evil, id and ego, life and after-life. For me, The Idiot did what both of these other great novels did, but was the most captivating of the three, because it was so human, intimate and real in its characters' discourse, actions and exposition. It was much less overt than the Brothers Karamazov, and less psychologically analytical than Crime and Punishment. But of the three, the timeless characters of "The Idiot" last most indelibly in the mind.

    sublimely inaccessible
    By Michael Fridman
This is one of the more famous of Dostoyevsky's novels, and quite rightly so as it has his very-unique blend of psychology, philosophy and an unrelenting view of the bleakest recesses of the soul.

I read the novel in the original Russian, so this isn't a review of any particular translation but the work itself.

In brief, the book centres around a Prince who has returned to Russia after being treated for mental illness in Switzerland since his childhood (hence the idiot). He quickly becomes involved within the upper-middle eschellons of St Petersburgian society, as people become fascinated by his direct honesty, simplicity and compassion. He becomes emotionally involved with a Fallen Woman, and this develops into a love triangle with another woman, ultimately ending in --- you guessed it! - tragedy. The Idiot is portrayed as the symbol of a child-like innocence: he genuinely wants everyone to live in harmony and love. However, the falseness, politics and backstabbing of the world of Russian middle-nobility will have none of that.

The plot is quite complicated - but not in terms of twists. The story is quite simple in terms of what happened, however much of it is told inside-out, focusing on the internal world of the characters. So, if you feel like you've missed something - a reason for a character's comment, an event etc, chances are, this will be revealed later on.

Dostoyevsky dwells on the extreme minute aspects of the emotional lives of his charactes. This is the richest aspect of the novel - and these emotions possess all the contradiction and chaos that real people have. There are no total heroes in the book - but I found a part of myself identifying with the Prince, as the grown child who just doesn't want to accept the "adult" behaviour of interpersonal relationships. I think it's expected in reading the book that some characters will be loathed, some found amusing and admired, some arousing interest - but not loved. This is because the world portrayed within the book is very inaccessible. It's hard to identify with anyone in terms of more than the generality of emotion - not just because the setting is remote, but because the characters experience thoughts and ideas that are so different to what most people would. I think this inaccessability was deliberate - as we feel not-quite-at-home in the world of the book, so it highlights how the Prince is not quite at home there - and that's where the sublime feeling is derived from.

On a side note, be prepared for the difficulty of keeping track of names, as people are called by their surnames on certain occasions and the rest is first name and father's name. With heaps of characters and many Russian names, it all becomes a mess. But with some concentration (perhaps making a cast of characters?) that can be overcome and a great read will be had.

A great book that will interact with your emotional world - if you don't mind heavy reading.

    Innocence Lost?
    By Nathan Knapp_Voronwë
Having previously read my first Dostoevsky (Crime and Punishment) I was literally chomping at the bit to start reading something else of his. I am not altogether sure as to why I found The Idiot to be the most appealing, it probably wasn't the synopsis, because I, in my ignorance, thought I was buying "The Possessed". I realized this as I pulled away from the book store, but didn't worry about it. Dostoevsky is Dostoevsky, right? Well, sort of. I was shocked when I did not find the anti-hero I expected, but Prince Lev Nikolaevich Myshkin, a pure and beautiful soul who I loved from the start. It was hard not to cheer for him throughout the course of the novel, and to feel his pain at the corrupt and confusing society that surrounded him. He is torn apart by his first love for the intriguing Nastasya Filippovna, and then later Aglaia Ivanovna, equally intriguing.

I'll be the first to admit that though I loved this book I struggled through certain portions of it, namely nearly every scene Lebedev is involved in, and Ippolit's letter. The book has a very 'meandering' quality to it, and you get the feeling at times that Dostoevsky didn't have the slightest clue how he would finish it, and so stalled for time in certain areas. This didn't really diminish the book's quality, it simply made it harder to follow. Also, towards the end it seems as if Dostoevsky finally knows, and he finally hurries off.

But, there is, perhaps, some of the greatest writing ever put on paper within these pages. Scenes such as Prince Myshkin's oratory on capital punishment, the party at Nastasya Fillippovna's, Prince Myshkin in the house of Rogozhin, and the most chilling scene in Rogozhin's bedroom. The beauty, terror, and despair in these scenes are so genuine that it's impossible not to be swept into Dostoevsky's world. So, would I recommend it? Of course, but not to someone unaquainted with Dostoevsky. Crime and Punishment is a much better place to start. But once you're acquainted with Dostoevsky's writings dive into this book, and you'll find yourself longing to help the poor Prince Myshkin, the idiot.

I'm about halfway through this book, and I have to say I was hooked from the beginning. I'm really interested in the characters so far, and I also really like the time and place it's set in. The cover art is beautiful, and I can't wait to see what happens next!

    Just a fun story!
    By Drew Schmidt
I'll be honest, this won't win any awards or be on the NY Times bestsellers list but it is just a good book. I started reading it and sailed right through it without stopping. There seemed to be no slow spots in it. There is a lot of action, humor, some gore, and a bit of naughtiness, all the elements of a great story for me. Read it, don't take it too seriously, and take away a little bit and apply it to your life. You'll be a better person for it.

    Fun Journey
    By Ariel
I totally enjoyed this book. The set ups and character interactions felt like I was walking through a narrative heavy video game. I liked how determined Kade was and the little friends he picked up along the way. He had a good attitude and never gave me anxiety. It feels like it could be a great kids book. I would have LOVED this book if I had a chance to read it when I was 9 or 10 years old. It's one I know I would read over and over again. I probably won't share with my nieces because of the sexual encounters, though. I really like a little spice in my books, but the sex in this book felt random and unnecessary. I didn't feel it added much to the story and I think could have been explained in a different way. But, like I said,I really enjoyed his book and would definitely read another!

  • A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court is an 1889 novel by American humorist and writer Mark Twain. The book was originally titled A Yankee in King Arthur's Court. Some early editions are titled A Yankee at the Court of King Arthur. In the book, a Yankee engineer from Connecticut is accidentally transported back in time to the court of King Arthur, where he fools the inhabitants of that time into thinking he is a magician—and soon uses his knowledge of modern technology to become a "magician" in earnest, stunning the English of the Early Middle Ages with such feats as demolitions, fireworks and the shoring up of a holy well. He attempts to modernize the past, but in the end he is unable to prevent the death of Arthur and an interdict against him by the Catholic Church of the time, which grows fearful of his power. Twain wrote the book as a burlesque of Romantic notions of chivalry after being inspired by a dream in which he was a knight himself, and severely inconvenienced by the weight and cumbersome nature of his armor.

    From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-While Mark Twain is most often identified with his childhood home on the Mississippi, he wrote many of his enduring classics during the years he lived in Hartford, Connecticut. He had come a long way from Hannibal when he focused his irreverent humor on medieval tales, and wrote A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. The hit on the head that sent protagonist Hank Morgan back through 13 centuries did not affect his natural resourcefulness. Using his knowledge of an upcoming eclipse, Hank escapes a death sentence, and secures an important position at court. Gradually, he introduces 19th century technology so the clever Morgan soon has an easy life. That does not stop him from making disparaging, tongue-in-cheek remarks about the inequalities and imperfections of life in Camelot. Twain weaves many of the well-known Arthurian characters into his story, and he includes a pitched battle between Morgan's men and the nobility. Kenneth Jay's narration is a mix of good-natured bonhomie for Hank and more formal diction for the arcane Olde English speakers. Appropriate music is used throughout to indicate story breaks and add authenticity to scenes. This good quality recording is enhanced by useful liner notes and an attractive case. Younger listeners may need explanations of less familiar words, and some knowledge of the Knights of the Round Table will be helpful. Libraries completing an audiobook collection of Twain titles will enjoy this nice, but not necessary, abridgement.

    Revolution by The Boss
    By Stephen A. Haines
You might wonder what prompted Mark Twain to sidle from "straight" fiction into the realm of outright fantasy. Twain transports a Connecticut shop foreman twelve centuries into the past [and 5 000 kilometres!] to Camelot and Arthur's court. Initially confused and dismayed, Hank Morgan's Yankee practicality is quickly aroused and he becomes a major figure among the panopolied knights. With the title of The Boss, his rank equals The King or The Pope with its uniqueness. His elevation doesn't distract him from a more profound impulse, however. Hank's Yankee roots and wide experience evoke an ambition - nothing less than revolution. He wants to sweep away the monarchy and aristocracy and establish an American-style republic in Arthurian Britain.
Mark Twain's scathing criticism of the sham of hereditary monarchy bolstered by an Established Church makes this among his choicest writings. He resents the condition of a Church which "turned a nation of men into a nation of worms." A fervent believer in individual freedom, Twain uses Hank to voice his disdain of Britain's royalty. It's no more than might be expected of a man who boasted of but one ancestor - who sat on the jury that executed Charles I. Hank knows revolutions never succeed when implemented from above. Revolution be achieved only when the individual's attitude changes from meek acceptance to
self assertion. Hank's method reaches people through clandestine schools and factories, publication of a newspaper and establishment of a telephone system. These new forms of manufacture and communication become the foundation by which Hank expects to abolish the ancient, mis-named, chivalric tradition. Does he change the course of history?
Twain relocates the roots of American democracy from the heart of the frontier yeoman farmer to the brain of the urban industrial worker. Here the man of wide, practical experience shows how to survive compared to those with a formal education. Hank has a simple ambition - establishment of a republic - but utilizes a broad spectrum of ideas to bring it about. He would gladly replace the Established Church of Rome with his own Presbyterian ideals, but is aware that it would be swapping one evil for another. "Each man should select his own religion, or make one" he contends. Yet, finally, it is this dread force that impairs his desire for change. The final sequence stands as a peer to the biblical Armageddon, Twain wallowing in a frightful bloodletting unseen in any of his other works.
Mark Twain contrasts the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution with the centuries of slavery, serfdom, and poverty that killed countless more people than that spasm of excising of aristocracy. What else spurred him to write of human rights with such passion? He had written of slavery before, but this book is especially wrathful in describing the "peculiar institution" eliminated in his homeland but a generation before. He forces the king to experience the slave's condition, a form of degradation he would have all aristocrats endure. Every feature of the human condition is examined in this timeless treasure. He challenges you to follow his gaze, considering whether today's societies, monarchical or not, will endure the scrutiny.

    Works on every level
    By BigT
As with all of Mark Twain's work this book works on two very different levels. The first of course is a simple adventure story the second is a bitingly satiric work that unmasks many of the hypocracies of "conventional wisdom".

I have to believe that most of his readers of his time (and ours) did not understand his underlying messages regarding society and its institutions. For me, it was hard to miss the way he unmasked the church, the state and society as a whole. I had to laugh out loud at some of the ways he managed to expose the absurdities of government and religion.

This book is a quick read and is immensely satisfying if the reader takes the time to follow Twain's logic to its natural conclusions.

Killer classic...Serious Message with Big, Big Humor!
    By Fitzgerald Fan
What a great novel! Twain is wonderfully funny, yet his scathing social commentary concerning his own times are as serious as a heart attack.

When a Connecticut Yankee gets sent back in time to King Arthur's Court, he decides his superior knowledge should be used to educate such an "ignorant race." Of course, we all know that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and if I didn't know better, I would say that the person who coined the phrase did so after finishing this novel. The story's main character, Hank Morgan, is a likeable, if not laughable character, yet as most of us already know: absolute power corrupts absolutely. Once technology gets on a roll, the beast of civilization takes off running and Morgan cannot pull in the reigns. Total disaster ensues (incase you had not already guessed).

This was a fun read and a look at a problem that is still very much alive today. Too much civilization can be like a disease, especially when those who are working to spread it find that they are doing it for reasons other than altruism.

Also, do you remember the scene in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" when Indiana Jones whips out his gun to shoot the sword-wielding Sultan? That scene was surely lifted from this very book!

Trust me, this is a novel for thought, but one that will not bore you. Twain was a master and this is perhaps my favorite of his novels. Very highly recommended.
