Great Sequel Pushes The Aldrinverse Forward
By Karl M.
The story follows Olton Sorrell, a smart, but ostracized teenager rather than Johnny of the first novel. I was worried about this at first, but Olton is quickly likeable. He's honest and has insecurities that make him seem real. He also has worked hard to be his school's valedictorian, yet his school doesn't want him to give a graduation speech. All of this sets up his anger at the world around him-the alien Naga(or Anunnaki) rule and humans have to act as their servants. But the people do this willingly-they believe the Naga deserve to be in control. I felt a lot of these subtleties take the dystopia genre further and help make the book more believable.

Soon Olton learns the truth about the Naga's control and realizes he must go on a quest to prevent them from taking over completely. The book does a great job of intertwining Olton's goal for personal freedom with his goal for freedom of humanity as he begins the journey. And once he sets off, the story moves at a fast pace with constant problems for Olton. As it progresses, he changes a lot as a character, while side characters have some growing arcs too. I thought the primary villain, Sinser Helios, was well-developed and sinister without getting too corny or cliche.

The story was a lot longer than I thought (it has 3 parts), but there is so much going on and so many immersive events that it doesn't feel too long. By the end, the story ends with a nice sense of closure and optimism. There is even a resolution to a minor romantic element that isn't cliche (it's believable).

Overall, I really enjoyed the story and loved the blend of adventure, tension, and analysis (Olton's character does a lot of analytical thinking).

By Cheryl Torricer
Gibson Morales is a talented writer and I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'The Boy Who Wields Thunder' - a story about Olton Sorrell who grew up in a privileged family/environment but was pretty much ostracized by his classmates and seemingly has only one friend. The trials and tribulations he goes through after graduating from school and the choices he makes would be hard on anyone, especially when his 'advisors' contact him so rarely. But Olton shows his strength of character throughout the story, even when he has doubts about himself and/or the mission he was given. I was privileged to read an advance reader copy of this story but look forward to reading more about Olton's adventures to come.

Looking for your next great read?
By Amazon Customer
I haven't enjoyed reading a book this much in a long time. It is thrilling, touching, frightening. It is about trust, love and fear. I wanted to know more about Puspha's life and just keep hearing about her insights and about India. It is a mix of Eat, Pray, Love and Shantaram in one book. I was hooked from the start and stayed that way through to the final word. If you're looking for something to read this summer, I definitely recommend this book :)

Yay Book
By Amazon Customer
I had been really hyped to read this book from the moment I knew that it existed. Once it appeared with me, I realized that I had not read books in a very long time (3 months), and it was often difficult for me to put this down. I have not read Ender’s Game, but friends who read over shoulders say that this book is too much like Ender’s Game to be called original content. However, I disagree, as many of the colliding plots in the story tend to mirror something within the reader and author and build the connection that the author had desired, rather than copy a work of fiction with its lovely copyrights and leave nothing for the reader to grasp other than “Am I reading the same thing twice?”.

In terms of grammar quirks, this book infuriated me on many levels. In a very intense scene, I was very wrapped up in the story line, when, suddenly, out of nowhere;. Yes, a semicolon. It set me off quite a good deal that I started ranting about it right on the spot. The author has informed me that many other errors had been resolved from the version that I had read, but seriously, a semicolon?!?! It completely set off the mood of that entire page. There were other select grammar errors, but none of them set me off as much as that semicolon.

At the memory of that interrupted scene, I recall a particular error with how the author used foreshadowing and imagery. As I read through scenes, things often happen the same way through romance sections. A girl and guy meet up. They say hi. They do the exact same thing. It was okay the first time I read it, but seriously, the same scene just got repeated three times in a row with different characters. I mean, I understand if that was the technique that the author meant to communicate, but in terms of writing style and repetitiveness, this irked me quite a lot. In terms of repeating things.

I feel that this book was supposed to be very science fiction centered, but it ended up being couples romance in the setting of a science fiction novel. I mean, I wouldn’t have it any other way, but the romance often takes away from the more realistic or sciencey side of the novel.

Many scenes appear to be rushed throughout this book, or unnecessarily dragged out. Especially during the exposition, initiation games could have been elaborated on more than they were. Plot was very rushed by the letters, which were a vital part of Ender’s Game I have heard, but they weren’t needed, and often I as a reader was confused as to where the heck the characters were or who someone was without following up with names quickly enough to move things along at a normal speed. The tempo of the novel is inconsistent with the progressiveness of love scenes as well. I mean, I know when you’re in love, time stops, but the reader can’t be kept on edge for maybe 2 and half pages. The insert story is an exception, as it was genuinely touching to read, but most other love scenes do not evoke the right emotion.

Deaths were very...how to put it. Shallow, at times. [redacted]’s especially. Her death could have been elaborated on more. I feel if Project:Battle were an anime this would have been cleaner, or more fluid.

So as to support the high rating that I gave this book, I will now proceed to mercilessly compliment it for app. 2 paragraphs. The ideas and plot development rose smoothly, it contained a clear exposition and setup of setting with minor flaws. Rising action as detailed through the dual letter format often complemented the storyline in a way that a free flowing story could not have accomplished on its own. The staggering of climaxes was effective in creating the feeling of being engrossed in the novel. Falling action was brief, but well placed and effective in leaving the reader wanting more, but satisfied.

This book evoked many feels. Good feels, and bad feels. But all feels are appreciated. I can empathize with many characters, and in a sense, the author has projected himself into the sentences that weave this novel together. It takes an original turn with stories about the hero Cathan that often the reader can sympathize with. I especially admire how the author brought out the flaws of the main character, rather than making him the perfect savior. Developed characters serve as role models to young people.

This book had a positive impact on me.

Interesting, but falls short of a young adult read
By Elor Tang
First off, I would like to recognize that this book is meant to be young adult fiction, and the main characters in the books are of an indeterminate teens age. There is an abundance of romance in this book, and if you're looking for a classic science fiction which does not deal with emotions as much as the defeat of a dystopian society, this book is not for you. I recommend Ender's Game instead, which inspired this book and an influence which is especially prevalent towards the beginning of the book. The synopsis, which was not posted until after I had read this book, would likely have deterred me from reading it due to the cliche YA-eque feel, but after reading both, I do not feel the synopsis reflects the book.

For a science fiction book, technology does not seem to play as much of a role as the system of Battle School and the Humanity War. The majority of the technology elaborated upon in this book is more or less current, except for the gear of one team which is made of a fictional material. However, this works in this case, as it makes the story with its casual dialogue more realistic, helping to pull the reader into the fight scenes, in which, for the most part, characters are also injured fairly reasonably.

The romance is also well balanced. While in few cases the development of romance seems poorly explained, it is made up for with mostly genuine descriptions of dreams and thoughts. It is possible that the author takes inspiration from his own life. The choice to kill one of the competitors in a love triangle, however, seems poor; leading up to this event, the competitor was in a steady relationship with the girl, who seemed to be happy but later enters a relationship with the other character. The girl had previously rejected the other character's romantic emotions, and if a reason was given for her change of heart, it did not resonate with me as a reader.

One especially interesting feature of this book is the insert stories which contain mini-plots. While I won't give anything away, they take place in a different setting and add a new dimension to the main story. Despite the simple developments which took place, these were probably one of the main highlights of the Project: Battle for me.

Most of the writing is not particularly extraordinary; the book opens with an email exchange between officers at Project: Battle, which feels vaguely copied from Ender's Game. However, it quickly transitions to a descriptive scene between two characters from a third person perspective of Evie. While at first this blatant hinting of a later pairing might seem overused, it ends refreshingly with Cathan's thought, an example of the smooth transitions evident throughout Project: Battle which redeem some of the scenes, especially at the beginning, that seem just a little too familiar. In my personal opinion, the insert stories are better written than most of the other scenes.

Another aspect that I would like to point out is that while the main characters are not perfect, they don't seem to have many faults and their losses can be blamed more on the power of the winners or the stupidity of others on their team. While this is fine for many other books, the overall glossiness of the characters combined with the very personal romantic conflicts is slightly alienating. The agreement at the end is also slightly too optimistic (spoiler: world peace and a total weapons ban, however impractical, are implemented), though it's not out of place in the book.

Overall, the plot was very interesting and well constructed, but the writing failed to bring out the mood of some scenes that I felt like should have been very dramatic, relying more on the imagination to construct heart-racing or a sense of anxiety. There is much less excitement that I've come to expect from young adult fiction, despite the complex romantic situation. I would recommend Project: Battle more as a middle-grade read, as there is only general depiction of violence and no inappropriate content, just a plot that will keep an avid reader going.

A seminal work of American Literature that still commands deep praise and still elicits controversy, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is essential to the understanding of the American soul. The recent discovery of the first half of Twain's manuscript, long thought lost, made front-page news. And this unprecedented edition, which contains for the first time omitted episodes and other variations present in the first half of the handwritten manuscript, as well as facsimile reproductions of thirty manuscript pages, is indispensable to a full understanding of the novel. The changes, deletions, and additions made in the first half of the manuscript indicate that Mark Twain frequently checked his impulse to write an even darker, more confrontational book than the one he finally published.

From Publishers Weekly
Considered the first great American novel, part of Finn's charm is the wisdom and sobering social criticism deftly lurking amongst the seemingly innocent observations of the uneducated Huck and the even-less-educated escaped slave, Jim. William Dufris's voice, unpretentious and disarming, like the book's main characters, seems the perfect armature on which to hang this literary strategy. Although he does an expert job with the entire cast, Dufris's delivery of Jim's dialogue is his crowning achievement. Out of context, Dufris's Jim might sound mocking and racist, due to his expert delivery of Twain's regional vernacular. Ignorance and intelligence, however, are not mutually exclusive, and taken as a whole, Jim's mind and heart come shining through, allowing the listener to reflect on their own assumptions. Tantor Media includes the entire text as a digital e-book on the final CD, a wise and thoughtful move in a market with swift and changing currents.

Gr 4–8—Tom, Becky, Aunt Polly, and the other residents of St. Petersburg, MO, come to vivid life through Payne's exuberant artwork in this handsome reprint edition of the classic story. Finely detailed pencil drawings, stunning watercolors, and mixed-media compositions depict playful, Norman Rockwell-esque portraits, Americana, and thoughtful visualizations of Twain's iconic scenes. A work of art, this oversize edition is a lovely addition for collectors and libraries with large classics collections.—Kiera Parrott, School Library Journal

Judge this book by it's cover!
By A. Frank
This review applies specifically to the April 2010, Sterling Edition, illustrated by Robert Ingpen:
I'm beginning to feel quite frustrated with the limited publishing information given to books on Amazon. For example, most books where you may click to "look inside" will default to the most common paperback. For books like Tom Sawyer, that is fine if you need the book for high school English class, where any copy cheap enough to write notes in the margins will do. I wanted a copy of Tom Sawyer to keep and love. I saw this publication on Amazon, but it had so little info and the one review given was a single sentence about the general value of Twain's story. The truth is, one doesn't buy this particular printing unless one is already convinced of it's literary excellency! So I am about to do Amazon a huge favor by telling you what it didn't tell me. For about $15, the asking price at the time of this review, you can invest in a real treat for your self or someone you love and wish to inspire.
This printing was meant to mark the one hundredth anniversary of Twain's death (2010). The story is unabridged, provided in full original text. It is positively rich with watercolor illustrations by Robert Ingpen. I just skimmed through the book looking for one that I especially liked, but I couldn't pick just one. In design, they are exactly as I would have dreamed them to be. Barefoot Tom, balancing a piece of straw on his nose, Huck Finn with a dead cat, Tom and puppy in church, Injun Joe- terrifying....each one pulls me in to read the text. The fabulous, wrapping cover art is also printed at the end of the book, so won't be lost if the dust jacket is damaged. The sewn binding is well constructed and the book lays nearly flat when open, so you may enjoy all of the pictures and layout without damaging the book. The inclusion of a pale blue place marking ribbon is a lovely touch. There is a thoughtful biography of Mark Twain proceeding the story. Also, provided are the author's and illustrators notes.
I have a boy, six going on seven. He is a reader and is happy to consume Magic Tree House and Box Car Children books at alarming speed under the covers at night when he is supposed to be asleep. I'll admit I was missing our former habit of reading together. So we read classics aloud together as a family. For less money than a video game this book will provide hours of family entertainment. I hope my son will be inspired to read it again and again. It will have a place in our library and be a reference for years to come. It is heirloom quality. It would make a very special gift to a favorite boy of any age. In fact, I am considering getting another copy for my father, who loves Twain.
Incidentally, not being able to ascertain the quality of this book through the Amazon web site, I went to a little local bookstore where I could put my hands on it first. I ended up buying it there, paying full price- about $5 more than Amazon was asking. They wrapped the book for free in nice heavy paper and since there was no shipping- I think I came out better for it. Before my son had opened this package, he knew it was a book to be awed by. Awesome it is- mostly for Mark Twains' masterful kntting of prose, but also for the cover and publishing.

This edition is not abridged!
By Diana
I just want to point out that this hardcover Everyman's Library edition is not abridged. Most of the reviews posted here apply to the Signet mass market edition, which apparently is abridged. The Everyman's edition contains both novels in full.

Incomplete: Missing Passages
By Amazon Customer
This edition is missing some passages from the original works. For example, there are about three pages missing (as measured from a paperback copy) from Chapter 21 of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.

Blends Romance, Adventure, Drama & International Intrigue Set in Egypt Post Arab Spring.
By Bill Anderson
IN A NUTSHELL

As many, I have become a fan of the series, The Legend of the Winged Scarab. Such a fan that I purchase each book as it gets released. I finished this book today, coincidentally with the departure of my Egypt-born and raised cat, Squeaky. I love this series and am impressed by the author's knowledge of ancient and contemporary Egypt, and with her imagination and skill in crafting a romance that also is an international adventure and intrigue.

With no further ado, in case you're curious as to what I think of this, the fifth book in the Legend of the Winged Scarab.

Length: Print, 275 pages.

Target Audience/Genre: This is an Adventure-Drama, billed as Alternative History.

Q - What was the Amazon Rank on the date this review was published?
A - 484,785.

Q - How was this book obtained?
A - Purchased through Amazon.

Q - Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first?
A – Yes, but it is better appreciated after reading the previous four books in the series.

Q - Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures?
A – No.

Q - Is this a fast, easy read or is it more of a leisure read?
A – The Nile Conspiracy is a leisure read.

Q - What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made?
A – Plain English. Although there is a modest amount of mature language, there are no f-bombs. I would have no qualms if this series was marketed toward the Young Adult demographic.

Q - My biggest pleasure or disappointment?
A - Despite an ever so slight awkward start, I quickly settled into an excellent yarn that actually does have one wondering if this is really not a prophetic story.

What I most loved was the writer's imagination, combined with a solid grasp of recent political developments that I could swear she lives in Egypt.

I’ve included a small excerpt below, so readers can peruse the style of presentation utilized by the author.

EXCERPT

“Who is it?”

"Khepur, the Wise One. Keeper of knowledge. Keeper of crystals. Perhaps now you can understand why I want this site to remain hidden. Archaeology is a destructive science. We discover, we dig, we exhibit; seldom do we leave things intact.”

On one level, Naunet agreed with him. On another, she was appalled the world should never know about the history of the Khepri. She kept staring up at the two faces: One so young and beautiful, the other so old; watching, guarding.

Naunet recalled the terrifying days she had been held captive on Crete by Edward, forced to translate the two golden slates he and Karakurt Tiryaki had stolen from the lab in Luxor. How elated she had been to read Ramose’s hieratic text, presumably a translation of the squares on the reverse of the tablets. And how frustrated she was about the broken-off corner of the first tablet, cutting short the saying prior to: And now, you know from where we hailed so long ago. ‘No,’ she had cried. ‘I don’t know.’

And here she stood, in front of those who held the answer. She reached up and caressed the floating mask. Then, with great reverence, she traced the outline of the old face peering out from behind Nuri’s gilded hair.

An overwhelming urge to hear their story flowed through her. She laid her hands on the stone slab. Her fingers sank into a layer of pebbles. Instinctively, she picked a handful up and rolled them in her hand. They crumbled with a crackling sound. In her open palm lay the remains of the iridescent wings of beetles. She looked closer at...

Bottom Line:

If you enjoy adventurous tales set in exotic locales, with a touch of romance and intrigue, you're in for a treat. I'm rating The Nike Conspiracy five stars out of five. This is the best of the five books in the series.

Comments regarding your opinion of this book or of my review, whether favorable or unfavorable, are always welcome. If you buy the book based on my review and become disappointed, especially, I do want to know that and I want to understand how I can improve as a book reviewer. Just please be polite.

Thank you.

The latest in a great Egyptian action/adventure saga
By Joseph the evilcyclist
The Legend of the Winged Scarab continues in book five of the series, The Nile Conspiracy. We see the return of Jonathan, Naunet, and former "pharaoh" of the Cairo Museum Egyptian Jabari El-Masri. Several other previous characters return including a favorite of mine, Vergil, a sly and crafty character, who acts in own self-interest. In the previous books, Borg forms a story surrounding regional political events like the revolution in Egypt that overthrew Mubarak and natural events like the Khamsin and Sirocco. All the natural phenomena used in the stories are real. In a previous book the supervolcano, the Yellowstone Caldera, erupted causing a great disruption in the world order and removing the United States from position power.

In this story, Egypt is still trying to seek stability after the revolution and dealing with a major threat to its existence. Ethiopia is is constructing the Grand Renaissance Dam on the Nile which is a threat to Egypt’s water supply. Ethiopia is the source 85% of the Nile’s water of which Egypt counts on for 80% of its water needs. This provides the catalyst of the story and what draws all the characters together -- from familiar characters to Egypt’s top leadership. There is action and adventure all within the reader’s willing suspension of disbelief, much like a Clive Cussler novel.

The two storylines of protecting Egypt’s water supply and the quest for control of the fifty ancient golden tablets and their meaning also continues. Their location is known but they are simply out of reach. The story also includes some mythology going back to the first book, which took place before the Egyptian civilization. This, although adding a supernatural aspect to the book, creates a stronger tie into the story and the events.

The story is fast moving and the storylines tie in nicely. The writing is clear and pulls heavily from real events. Borg does her research well and takes the current political situation and ties it in with real or possible natural effects. Even though the writing is fiction the reader can pick up real world issues like the effects of Ethiopia building the world’s largest hydroelectric dam on the river that has been a source of life in North East Africa and center of an ancient civilization. I liked this series from the beginning. It’s smart. It makes the reader want to research aspects of the story. It is not your average cookie cutter fiction or action/adventure series; it holds your attention and has you looking into current events and history. It is a series you actually become involved in.

Loved it
By Molly Flanders
What a timely novel. Just this week I read an article in the Economist about the complexity of the sharing of the Nile between Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt. Borg has picked a hot topic for her fifth book in her series. While other authors repeat a formula in each of their books, Borg takes her characters and story to different types of adventures and genres.
This thriller flirts with the term conspiracy but is rooted deeply in reality, making it a bit political and contemporary at the same time.
The plot is intriguing. Archeologists Naunet and Jonathan Wilkins are back in Egypt where the construction of The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam stirs up some controversy, tension and danger.
Underneath the excellent and explosive plot are more profound moral and ethical questions about culture and humanity, making the book rewarding in other ways, too.
Borg's narrative is eloquent, witty and stylish; her characters are memorable and there is a great balance between ironic detachment and powerful dramatic involvement.
Maybe it is the coincidence of having read about the Nile and the Dam twice in one week or maybe it is Borg's talent. I really loved this one.

    Review
(in full The Innocents Abroad; or, The New Pilgrims' Progress) A humorous travel narrative by Mark Twain, published in 1869 and based on Twain's letters to newspapers about his 1867 steamship voyage to Europe, Egypt, and the Holy Land. The Innocents Abroad sharply satirized tourists who learn what they should see and feel by reading guidebooks. Assuming the role of a keen-eyed, shrewd Westerner, Twain was refreshingly honest and vivid in describing foreign scenes and his reactions to them. He alternated serious passages--history, statistics, description, explanation, argumentation--with risible ones. The humor itself was varied, sometimes in the vein of the Southwestern yarn spinners, sometimes in that of contemporaneous humorists such as Artemus Ward and Josh Billings, who chiefly used burlesque and parody and other verbal devices. --The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

The Innocents Abroad is one of the most prominent and influential travel books ever written about Europe and the Holy Land. In it, the collision of the American ?New Barbarians? and the European ?Old World? provides much comic fodder for Mark Twain?and a remarkably perceptive lens on the human condition. Gleefully skewering the ethos of American tourism in Europe, Twain?s lively satire ultimately reveals just what it is that defines cultural identity. As Twain himself points out, ?Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one?s lifetime.? And Jane Jacobs observes in her Introduction, ?If the reader is American, he may also find himself on a tour of his own psyche.?

Take a Tour of Europe and the Holy Land with Mark Twain the inimitable Missouri traveler
    By C. M Mills
Mark Twain is the Lincoln of our literature. Sam Clemens (1835-1910) wrote Huckleberry Finn in 1885 which has been acclaimed as our greatest American novel. Lesser known are his wonderful travelogues: "Roughing It' "Following the Equator"; "Life on the Mississippi and "The Innocents Abroad" published in 1869. This book is worth reading even 140 years after its publication. Twain style is a joy to read for he was a born storyteller and communicates his thoughts well on the page.
Twain was a reporter who joined the six month expedition to Europe and the Middle East on board the steamer "Quaker City." The pleasure tour had
been organized by the famous pastor Henry Ward Beecher (sibling of Harriet Ward Beecher) and Civil War General William Tecumseh Sherman. Neither of these notable made the trip citing other obligations.
Twain roomed with a young man from Elmira New York. He would later visit Elmira and meet his friend's sister Olivia. She would become his wife and the mother of the couple's three daughters.
The Innocents Abroad is a long book of 400,000 words covering over 500 densely written pages. Twain takes a sardonic, humorous view of European art as he guides us through the Louvre, Florence Italy and Rome. We visit London, Paris and meet with Czar Alexander II in the Crimea. Twain had a keen reporter's eye and a humorist's ability to paint word pictures of his fellow passengers, tour guides and natives of the fascinating cities and countries he visited on a busy itinerary.
As a Presbyterian pastor I found the most interesting part of the book dealt with Twain's tour of Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Greece and Israel. He was upset by the filth, disease and cruelty he saw in the land of Moses and Jesus Christ. Despite all his asides and digressions the observant reader can gain a good picture of what these places were like in 1869. Twain was an agnostic but knew his Bible.
Mark Twain was our greatest author. In this fine book you will get to know this fascinating man better as he shares his globe trotting journey with his readers.

The funniest book ever written-in the history of time!
    By A Customer
Ok, maybe that is a minor overstatement, but this is one hilarous book, to be read by people who have travelled, who plan to travel, and generally, people who want to laugh. A lot.
The book is also surprising for its timeless points about the journeying of certain upper white, middle class people going on a grand tour of Europe. I frequently had to remind myself that it was written in 1869 because his observations and the behavior of his shipmates is so close to the way people I studied abroad with acted-only a few years ago.
Twain also puts those "cosmopolitan" people who claim to have traveled, but don't know anything about any place they have been but and just like to lord it over everyone else that they have "travelled" and you have not.
Reading this book is like listening to a very wise, old man tell you about his adventures. Its not like a book, more like one long conversation. Twain takes nothing seriously-not himself, his fellow travelers or the places they visit. The words are another adventure-sometimes, you know he is setting you up for something, other times he is serious for a while, then you end up in the middle of a joke.
I know this is against the rules, but the other posters who don't like this book-don't be so serious and p.c. all the time. Twain is making humorous observations, at a time when a different standard was acceptable. Not to mention, he does manage to get a few zingers in there about what people are willing to accept and what they do not.
You will laugh yourself silly and want to book a trip-not to Europe, just to anywhere, after reading this book.

    Twain, the Terrible Tourist
    By Stephen A. Haines
Cliches aside, retrieving the outlook of mid-19th Century isn't easy. Having successfully concluded the upheaval of the War Between the States, the people of the USA, while bruised, felt confident. Their sense of righteousness was enhanced - they'd quelled a rebellion and freed slaves. Some took that attitude to other lands. The 1867 SS Quaker City excursion to Europe and the "Holy Land" was but one of those forays. It was special in that it carried one of the more discerning observers the United States had produced - Sam Clemens of Hannibal, Missouri and points West. He was to post letters to the San Francisco newspaper "Daily Alta California" describing the journey. The trip and the account opened Clemens' eyes and those of his readers over numerous legends.

In Clemens' baggage was a strong religious sense imparted by his mother, Jane. This cargo was balanced by Twain's more worldly experience on the Mississippi and his life in the mining communities in the West. When he crossed the gangplank to board the steamer, his gaze was sceptical and his pen ascerbic. His portrayal of the Quaker City's passengers began as they traversed the Atlantic, but it is his depiction of "foreigners" in their homelands that both shocks and enlightens. Starting with the Azores stopover, Clemens' observations of the islands are a tribute to their charms. Of the people, however, he has little positive to impart. They are dirty, noisy, conniving and devious. In general, they're "not American".

The use of the "innocents" is exemplified by Twain's description of contact with the Europeans. Educated in the minimal language training of the day, the travellers struggled to impart their wishes in French shops and restaurants. Twain seems to lay responsibility for this on the French "failure to understand their own language", but his description of the exchanges makes it clear where the problem lay. There was another side to this coin, however. Europeans were caught up in their own affairs. The United States was a remote and unknown element to them - "they'd had a war with somebody recently". Twain notes his shipmates were even then tinged with the arrogance that would fully blossom later. Respect for "tradition" had a variety of expressions in the "Quaker City" passengers. Twain depicts them all with delightful detachment.

As the ship made landfall in Mediterranean ports, Clemens and his comrades visit the "standard" tourist haunts. Paris is a must, Genoa is a treat, Rome is a maze of cathedrals and art galleries. Quickly disenchanted with "guides" he renames them all "Ferguson" and rebukes them at every opportunity. Michaelangelo seems so pervasive in Rome that the Pilgrims ask if Greek or Egyptian artefacts are his work - to the consternation of the "Ferguson" of the day. Twain's flexibility and ability to adapt to events leads some of the "innocents" to take the train from Rome to Naples - a city under quarantine. While the "Quaker City" lies still in the harbour, Twain and his companions tour the city and visit Vesuvius. A similar ploy works in Greece.

It is in the "Holy Land" that Clemens' descriptive powers and distrust of "authorities" flowers most brilliantly. Like many of his fellow passengers, he's been subjected to many tales from "Scripture" and a spate of earlier travel writers in Palestine. Unable to criticise the Bible outright, he lets the words speak for themselves, allowing logic and common sense to question dogma. The effusive travel writers, who had insisted Palestine was a "paradise" are brought out in contrast with Twain's observations of the barren desolation that was the Levant. He is scathing in his criticism of people who fabricate conditions there in order to sell their books. His veracity, of course, nearly had the opposite effect. "The Innocents Abroad" manuscript was originally rejected by Twain's publisher.

Sam Clemens' reputation was "made" with this book. It touched on many aspects of how people in the United States viewed themselves and the world. The subtle, but incisive, comments on tradition and legend were seeds finding fertile ground in a dynamic nation setting the practical foremost. "Innocents" was a challenge to dogmas and a paean to the sense of "realism" that permeated the post-Civil War era. The "Romantic" Era, still evident in mid-19th Century in the earlier accounts of Palestine, would be whisked aside. "Innocents" would be instrumental in that sweeping it away. A cool premise
    By Jesse
A close-knit group of gifted telepaths escape from a corrupt organization that wants to exploit their abilities for profit. When an enemy from their past seeks their help, their safety is jeopardized. All cool stuff. Gifted good-guys outnumbered and overwhelmed by the big bad universe. Superpowers and space travel. A warrior-heroine who can melt minds looking out for her boyfriend. Sign me up.

The story deals with some mature subjects (torture/sex/rape/enslavement), but other than profanity, it does so in an almost PG fashion, never going into too explicit detail until the end, so I was surprised to discover the book’s description states it’s not intended for readers under eighteen. I felt like Hide Us was gearing itself toward young adults by painting what could have been R-rated details in broad strokes. There’s even a goofy scene where Chad talks about needing to ask his parents for condoms that I would have sworn was intended to impart the notion of safe sex to a younger reader.

The book’s underlying theme resonated with me. I enjoyed exploring how moments outside our control shape us into the people we become. Meaning that in an alternate universe, someone’s good nature might not have been able to outlast a bad nurture.

    A couple criticisms:

Occasionally the more explicit moments feel too vague for their own good. At one point Yumi experiences the horrific memories of another character, enough to shift her perception of said character, yet the specifics of what occurred in this character’s past aren’t revealed beyond hazy details.

The novella could be much leaner and more conflict-driven. I appreciate the coziness and humorous exchanges between characters during the mellower parts, but these scenes slow the story. Expository dialogue sometimes relays information we already know. When separate narrators describe the same situation, not enough new information is revealed to warrant retelling the plot point from a different perspective. It feels like such a formulaic criticism to levy against a book—wishing the writing had been “tighter”—but there it is.

Realistic characters and superb world building.
    By Emma Jaye
Firstly, I can't believe this excellently written, intriguing series doesn't have more reviews. I've read Protect Us, and this is an engaging look into the lives of Yumi, Chad, Shiv and Grace. Four young adults, with incredible mental abilities who are hiding out in snowy future America from those wishing to control them. Between the four of them, they possess abilities ranging from strong telepathic sending and receiving, empathy, teleportation and manifestation of objects..
For those concerned about this being a 'Christmas' story, that plot point isn't a central feature although the cold weather is. The pacing in this short story is superb, with an action packed start, and although the first person, alternate perspective is unusual, the author really makes it work, as well as including telepathic communication and normal speech. Every main character has their own baggage, and the way they care for each other, and work though their issues was fascinating.

    Hide Us
    By R3
This is a YA sci-fi romance about Yumi and Chad, although the romance element at times appears to be more prevalent. It starts off exciting, with Yumi almost drowning, but she's saved by Chad, who we discover is her husband from hand-fasting. They are "hiding" from The Academy for whom they once worked. Then along comes Merryweather, apparent villain, to disrupt their peaceful existence.

The characters are well-developed, with all their flaws. I enjoyed learning about their various talents--speaking with their minds, transporting objects, creating objects from the elements, etc.

The author states that this book is the in-between story of two other novels, and it feels that way, as if it's filling in information readers should know. Not having read the others, I found this one dragged out a bit as a stand-alone novella. Told from two first-person viewpoints, it at times was confusing whether it was Chad or Yumi speaking. And as each of them examined scenes from their own viewpoint, information tended to be repeated.

I think for those following the series, these issues will not pose any problems. If you start with the first novel, events of which were frequently mentioned often in this story, you will thoroughly enjoy this winter adventure.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
