At over a thousand pages, the weighty tome is a perfect gift for budding amateur sleuths, and it is an ideal companion for a long stay on a desert island (or a leisurely trip through the English countryside). As the reader wades past the tense introductions of A Study in Scarlet and moves towards such classic tales as The Hound of the Baskervilles, "The Adventure of the Speckled Band," and "The Final Problem," she is sure to draw her own conclusions about Holmes's veiled past and his quirky relationship with his "Boswell," Watson. Doyle never revealed much about Holmes's early life, but the joy of reading the complete Holmes is assembling the trivia of each story into something like a portrait of the detective and his creator. By the end of the long journey through London and across Europe (with a long stopover at Reichenbach Falls), one is apt to have found a friend for life. --Patrick O'Kelley

Grade 7 Up-Four short stories of mystery and intrigue by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle are performed radio theater style by the St. Charles Players: "The Adventure of the Speckled Band," "The Adventure of the Dancing Men," "A Scandal in Bohemia," and "The Adventure of the Devil's Foot." The narration is acceptable, although some characters sound flat and their British accent is too obviously forced. However, this detracts little from the overall entertainment value of the stories. The overall aural quality could be improved; a slight hissing can be heard throughout the narration. Though at times Holmes comes across as haughty, listeners become caught up in learning how he ingeniously solves the cases using clues that Watson, the other investigators, and most listeners miss. Fine for individual or group listening, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes could be used for entertainment or for a unit on the mystery genre in English classes. The lack of strong female characters in these stories may warrant including alternate classic mysteries with strong women, such as Simon Brett's Mrs. Pargeter, Agatha Christie's Miss Marple, Heron Carvic's Miss Seeton, or Dorothy Gilman's Mrs. Pollifax. A nice feature of this package is that each short story is completed with one cassette. Unless you have a great demand for classic mysteries, this audiobook is an additional purchase.

Great classic literature. I really enjoy reading Holmes and Watson's adventures, solving the mystery, and putting the puzzles together.

Perfect Kindle mysteries at the perfect price!

This free Kindle download is the prelude to The Return of Sherlock Holmes. Arthur Conan Doyle's timeless tales are perfect for Kindle and, actually, the Kindle's electronic voice does an admirable job of reading them to you!

The only downside to this free Kindle download is that it doesn't have linked Table of Contents. So how do you quickly skip to a chapter later in the book?

Great Britian's Nineteenth Century History

English history is served up along with the amazing mystery stories. I enjoy the pictures of daily life...the maid bringing in lunch to Holmes on a pre-arranged schedule, passing the street vendors and beggars, imagining the opium den frequented by addicts, vivid descriptions of period clothing, transportation and commerce slipped seamlessly into the tales. I read this often to refresh the imagery in my mind.

Emilia is an eight-year-old girl growing up on a remote farm in the Amazon rainforest. With her pale skin, green eyes and curly red hair, she knows that she is different from her brothers and sisters.

Her father calls her Diabinha - little devil.

While hunting in the forest one day, Emilia's father shoots a monkey and gives the baby it was carrying to Emilia as a gift. She names the baby monkey Chips, and he becomes like her own child, clinging to her neck everywhere she goes. At least until one night during a terrible storm, when she is unable to quieten the frightened monkey and her angry father, in a fit of rage, dashes the creature against a wall until it is dead.

Emilia swears revenge upon her father. She follows him everywhere, spying on him as he conducts black magic rituals in the forest by night and destroying the offerings he leaves for the devil. But her defiance earns her only trouble. Her father comes to her room at night. He beats her until he cannot lift his arm anymore. Her mother cannot protect her, and her grandmother, a pagan healer the locals call Bruxa – a witch, tries to cleanse the farm and her father of evil spirits, but her efforts are in vain.

Emilia's father starts disappearing on business more frequently. While he is away on a trip,
Emilia and her brother Lorin steal his journal from a locked chest in his room and start reading it in secret. It appears to detail stories of murders he has committed in service to a local businessman, as well as the tale of how he forced Emilia's mother to marry him else he would kill the man that she really loved.

Emilia and Lorin realise that unless they do something, their father will kill one or perhaps both of them. To try and defend themselves, they convince their grandmother to teach them a black magic spell involving a voodoo doll. In preparation, Emilia sets about stealing her father's hair and clothes in order to make one.

What they discover in the diary however scares the hell out of them, and little Emilia realizes she doesn't actually know her father at all, and that her life really is in mortal danger...

I recently downloaded the kindle app and I was amazed at how many independent authors were on there.

I browsed the usual authors that I read, but then decided to type in a few random searches to see what came up.

There were a few that caught my eye but the one that stood out for me was this book, it has a good cover which is important when trying to stand out from the crowd.

I read through the description and liked what I read, so paid my £1.99 ( a bargain).

By chapter 2, I was hooked, in this chapter I wanted to reach into my tablet and strangle the father what an emotional chapter that is, ( I am not going to talk about specific points as I don't want to spoil the book for other readers).

As I read further into the book I thought about what the little girl had to endure growing up in such a harsh environment, wondering whether I would have had the strength of character that she shows in the book.

The more I read the more I wanted to finish the book, as the revelations unravelled it amazed me how some people get away with things for so long, especially as this happened not that long ago.

Chapter 24 horrific, cruel, sadistic sent shivers down me.

I finished this book over 2 days a record for me reading, I was gripped by the emotion shown, the violence and the determination of a strong girl.

Would I recommend this book ?

Yes without doubt a great read, but being a true story it also gives it a further hit.

Credit the author for moving on with her life, I also had a look at her painting website which is linked at the end of the book, it looks like she is a very talented woman, who has found solace in painting!

I am so glad I did

I was intrigued by description of this book and by the image on the front cover, so I took a chance and bought it. I am so glad I did.

As I read deeper into the story, I felt transported to another world or another time, so different was it to my everyday experience. One cannot help but empathize with plucky little Emelia as the story unfolds and she struggles under her tyrannical father's yoke, yearning to be free to develop her own path. There are moments of joy and darker periods of great sadness. Ultimately though it is a story of hope. Thoroughly recommended.

Great read and shocking revelations!

A very heartwarming story about a girl who grew up suffering abuses, heartbreaking account of a survivor who didn't give up. This book is easy to read , and easy to understand and follow the story, it will make you cry as the author speaks to your heart .
You must ead it !

Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871) is a novel by Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), the sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865). It is based on his meeting with another Alice, Alice Raikes. Set some six months later than the earlier book, Alice again enters a fantastical world, this time by climbing through a mirror into the world that she can see beyond it. Though not quite as popular as Wonderland, Through the Looking-Glass includes such celebrated verses as "Jabberwocky" and "The Walrus and the Carpenter", and the episode involving Tweedledum and Tweedledee.

The name of this review is called "Haddocks' Eyes"

I finally, and seemingly permanently, misplaced the 40 year old copy of 'The Annotated Alice' (which I had pilfered from my mother's bookshelf) for the last time. I can't go more than a month or two without it so I rushed to buy a new copy...just weeks before the more beautifully bound 'Definitive Edition' was published. No matter, now I have two (perhaps even three if the original turns up).
My point is that this book contributed more to my understanding of logic and wordplay than several semesters of college philosophy classes. If you've read this far then I am probably preaching to the choir but 'Alice in Wonderland' can hardly be classified as a childrens' book, dispite Disney's attempts to do so. The concepts Lewis Carroll and Martin Gardner bring to this tale cover such areas as set theory, meta-language, Aristotelian logic, topography, game theory, several pre-Socratic logic paradoxes, and even quantum physics. Yet John Tenniel's original illustrations remain as an welcome tether to the original publication.
Gardner does a wonderful job of bringing all the various aspects of these two stories together as he illuminates layer upon layer of meaning that might not be evident to an American audience or, for that matter, a 21st century one. My favorite gems are the French and German translations of The Jabberwocky.
This book ranks in my top five favorite books of all time.

The Looking Glass Shows Hidden Humor

I always enjoyed the twisted logic and unique sence of humor that I found in Lewis Carroll's Alice tales, the only problem I encountered was that some of the jokes required information that was no longer common knoledge. For example: when Alice continually misquoted the old English nursery rhymes I found myself wondering what the actual versions were, information that every child in Victorian England could have easily told me but that has since been lost to obscurity. After reading through this book I found the answers to all my original questions as well as many that I never considered asking. At first I thought that the commentary would strip the original work of its character and reduce it to a lifeless shadow. I found that the commentary did exactly the opposite, in a surreal way it made the book even more entertaining to read. The incredible detail of the commentary and the wide range of topics covered made the comments themselves seem part of the insane illogic that pervades the realms of wonderland and looking glass house. This does not mean that the coments themselves are insane or illogical, on the contrary they are all intresting and many offer new insights into the books, what makes the commentary so entertaining is how the story of "exactly 7 and one half" Alice is juxtaposed with comments on how the structure of the plot relates to physic and Robert Oppenheimer. Altogether I found the Annotated Alice to be a wonderful read and a gorgeous book which I recomend to anyone who enjoyed the original tales.

Master of Nonsense

The Annotated Alice provides a treasure chest of information on the two Alice books and on the man, Lewis Carroll who was responsible for their creation.
Martin Gardner provides annotations throughout the texts of both Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There. Gardner's annotations help explain the inside jokes and mathematical and linguistic puzzles that fill the stories.
Reading the Alice books as an adult is quite a different experience than it was as a child. The books' complexity really stands out on a careful reading. In fact, what are generally regarded as children's stories can be amazingly frustrating to read due to the complexity of the language and the almost constant stream of puns that are sometimes lost on modern audiences. One must remember that the stories are told purely for fun. Unlike other Victorian children's literature one gets no morals, plot development, or character development here. Alice is a yound child who stays a young child throughout her adventures. She neither matures or learns anything from her adventures.
This is a very nice volume in its own right. It contains complete authoritative texts of both books and includes the supressed episode "The Wasp in the Wig." The original Tenniel illustrations are crisp and clear. The only difficulty is that the annotations are placed on the same page as the text in a small column that sometimes supplies more information than the text itself. The annotations themselves range from the definitional to the clearly eccentric. One can read all of them or only the ones that he or she is interested in.
On the whole this is an excellent volume well worth the effort to read if one has any interest in the world of nonsense literature.

An Action Adventure Story Of Individualism And Love

"Fugitive From Asteron" is Gen LaGreca's third published novel, but the first that she wrote. I've been looking forward to it since I had an opportunity to see a very early draft. It has been worth the wait.

"A science fiction adventure story for young adults and the forever young," she describes it, but it is much more than that. It is a grand picture of two opposites: a world of totalitarian oppression versus a world of individual freedom.

The picture is in the form of a fast-paced story of mystery, intrigue, and love. The mad ruler of the world of oppression seeks to solve the problems of his world by conquering and taking over the free world—and the free world does not even know it is being threatened. Only one man is able to discover the nature of that threat, but he is from the world of oppression. Only one person is able to help him but she is from the free world and hates anyone or anything from the world of oppression. The inevitable clash of cultures that occurs when they meet furthers the unlikelihood they will be able to prevent the destruction of the free world.

This is a wonderful, fast-paced, science fiction yarn, especially for those who enjoy depictions of individualism and a heroic battle for freedom.

A great story that keeps your attention

This is a science fiction story about the attempt of a dictator of another planet to conquer earth. It starts showing life on the the other planet, which is horrible for everybody except the rulers. The subjects are barely above starving, and if they don't behave, they can be hanged.

The hero of the story is a pilot who escapes from the planet and ends up on earth. There are very strange things happening, and our pilot takes on the job of solving the mysteries, because he suspects they are the result of the dictator.

There is a lot of action as the pilot tries to avoid the dictator's spies, and great scenes of precision flying.

There is also a growing love relationship between the pilot and a young woman he met when he landed on earth. That relationship was interesting because the pilot kept using the words he learned before he came to earth which insults the girl.

Exhilarating

Fugitive From Asteron is a science fiction thriller set well into the future in an age of interplanetary travel. Its underlying theme is nothing less than the need for the mind to be free if humans are to survive and thrive. Great heroes, dreadful evil (actually symbolizing the evil seeking to engulf all of us today), a glorious young woman and her mysterious fugitive, both of them space pilots but from radically different worlds—all vividly dramatize the story. Gen LaGreca’s gifted writing goes from sensual (“… the clinking of the glasses in a kiss that K called a toast” to moving (“‘I cannot laugh or cr__’ The burning liquid spilled from my eyes just as I was denying its existence.”)—and to so much else. [The second quote really got to me, with my own sudden reaction reinforcing it.] Fugitive From Asteron - truly exhilarating stuff.

Good (new)old-fashioned hard SF by a brilliant new writer.

Mr. Savage has done it again, a hard-science fiction that focuses on characters. Delightful!

Mr. Savage proposes a realistic extension of modern technology into the next few centuries, creating a place similar enough to for us to understand, and yet as different from our culture, as ours is different from the late 1700s. No miracle 'star trek' universe here, it's all blood, sweat, and pulling ourselves up by our bootstraps. Spacecraft are subject to the physical realities of our universe, which means it takes time to get from planet to planet, which shapes the actions and events in the story. I'll leave the math checking to someone better suited than myself, but the times seem very realistic, creating a plausible, realistic setting for his characters to interact with.

No spoilers here, however, we see many of the characters we have come to know and love, (and loathe) returning in The Phobos Maneuver, Elfrida Goto has a primary role, but not the only one, and Mr. Savage's pacing is great. The story slides easily from viewpoint to viewpoint advancing the plot and story, providing just enough tantalizing hints and foreshadowing of action to come to keep you guessing and wondering without becoming predictable at any point.

I've seen Mr. Savage compared to Asimov - frankly, I feel the comparison does Mr. Savage a disservice, his future-history tells a tale without becoming bogged down in the author's exposition and explanation of 'why' or 'what' - a profound problem with Asimov's later works. Perhaps if we need to compare Mr. Savage to Asimov, we should compare him to the early Asimov - still hopeful, excited with the promise of the future, not jaded and disappointed with life. Not to say that Mr. Savage's future is Utopian - it's not, the characters struggle with knowing their culture and civilization is at serious risk for destruction. But instead of despair, there is hope, and while the future is still uncertain, these characters are not going to go quietly into that long dark night.

I highly recommend this story, and this author to anyone. Reading the other novels will be helpful, but not necessary.

My favorite Sci-Fy series--Frida is Back!!!

I don’t usually like “war” or “military” stories, but I love the “Solarian War” series. I think it is because of the balance of science, science fiction, and human relations that comprise these novels. The science fiction parts seem so plausible it is easy to set aside reality and believe they could really exist.

In the previous books in this series we have read about the challenges of successful human colonization of the Moon, Mars, and Mercury. Things were going pretty good until an enemy suddenly attacked and took over Mars. They refused to communicate with anyone and their goal seems to be total annihilation of humanity. Since all their attacks seem to be on places far from Earth the various government entities were not that concerned about confronting what they called “The PLAN”. Their focus was on protecting Earth and its sources for supplies needed for manufacturing and maintaining the status quo. But now Earth cities have been hit and those in power are getting nervous. They won’t admit it, but they fear there is nothing that can stop the PLAN. War has been declared against the PLAN.

Phobos is a rocky satellite (moon) around Mars. The PLAN has made it into a base for their attack ships and for launching asteroids which can destroy an entire Earth city in a matter of seconds. Several different groups (The UN, Star Force, former human inhabitants of Mars who lost their homes, as well as concerned citizens) have come to the conclusion that Phobos is the place to start the fight against the PLAN’s base on Mars. If one of them doesn’t succeed it will be the end of mankind. Each group thinks they have the best solution but will lie and cover-up to keep their own plans secret since no one can be sure how the PLAN always seems to be a step ahead of the humans.

The story begins with several friends we have met in previous books. They are spread from Earth to the asteroids. When the centralized government on Earth declares war on the PLAN they all have their own reasons for responding (or not) to the call. Alicia Petruzzelli is piloting a garbage hauler and this might be her chance to be a real Star Force pilot; Kioyshi Yonezawa and his brother, Jun, have an idea they have been working on that they think could destroy the PLAN; and Star Force members such as Elfrida Goto are sworn to secrecy about the part they will play in the planned Star Force attack. “Frida” becomes part of the story about 40% into the book and that is when the action really takes off.

Will they be able to attack and take over Phobos or will they die before they even get there? How many Star Force soldiers will survive a landing on Mars if they can even get through the PLAN’s extensive defenses on Phobos? Will the different groups of government, military, and colonists kill each other before they can destroy the enemy? Who is lying about what? And, whose plan will be the successful one? Each group has an understanding of part of the puzzle but since they selfishly guard their own secrets how can anyone conquer what they don’t understand? Thank goodness several of the groups trust Frida enough that she and her friends can work together to bring a winning conclusion to the story. The story has enough complexity so that there are always a few questions left unanswered so they can be dealt with in the next book. I can hardly wait. (Did Mikey really die? I really liked him and he was too good a character to “waste” so I think he will return. But I could be wrong…)

Pros: 1. The author does an incredible job of world building. He includes details to make you believe these strange places (and some strange people) are really possible.
2. Fieda’s friends are great. They work together really well even though they don’t always agree with each other.
3. One group of friends are very religious and often rely of faith without getting at all preachy. And one of them isn’t even human anymore. Non-religious readers shouldn’t be bothered by this as it shows the motivation for their actions. (But I like it.)
4. Each book has a satisfying ending so they can be read alone but I think most people would enjoy reading them in order.
5. Sometimes a series of more than a couple books become boring because there was never enough plot to keep more than one or two books interesting and they start repeating themselves. But each of the books in this series has been different enough to make enjoyable reading. The story line continues and each book adds more information to fill in the back story.
6. A little romance but no overt sex. Very little rough language and it fits into the story. Lots of violence and gore because the PLAN is ruthless.
7. Very well edited, no grammatical errors I found.

Cons: 1. This is both a pro and a con. The author includes a lot of technical details about how things work in space. It reminds me of the details in some of Tom Clancy’s books about how war machines/weapons operate. It is a little too much information for me, but if the reader is at all a little geeky I bet they love it. Sometimes I feel like I understand what is going on, but I generally prefer characterization over mechanics and let the mechanical details go in one ear and out the other; or should that be “go in one eye and out the other”—sounds kind of gross ;)
2. The action didn’t really pick up until near the second half of the book, but it wouldn’t have made any sense without the first half so don’t give up if you think it starts a little slow. It will all come together as the story continues.

The Solarian Saga just keeps getting better!

I started reading the Felix Savage "Solarian War" Series after finding it in some "Bargain Book" ad... Since I am a voracious Sci-Fi reader, I am constantly after new stories and new authors. With that book I was hooked and eagerly sought out every other book in the series (including the prequels and a side story).

I have waited rather impatiently for this latest entry in the "Solarian War" saga and I was not disappointed! WHile this book can be read on it's own, I *highly* encourage you to get the others in the series as well. Knowing some of the background just makes the story all that much to the better! The pacing is rapid yet steady and his compelling writing style makes it hard to put the book down! The characters are richly portrayed and varied and the near future universe is satisfyingly realistic. Felix Savage has obviously taken the time to integrate the sciences in many fields without making it overbearing. It supports the story with realism and gives the whole thing that "plausibility" factor while still being highly entertaining.

I am not usually one to do comparison to other science fiction legends but with the great (and improving) stories coming from this maestro's pen, I would not be surprised to see Felix Savage taking his place in their august company. You can see the growth and refinement with every story and I can't wait to see what comes next!

A Roller Coaster Nail-Bitingly Good Read

If John Beckman's first Captain Jack Stevens adventure "Tropical Knights" could be considered an appetizer, then his follow up novel "Tropical Daze" is the main course.

Beckman sets us up perfectly in "Tropical Knights" and leaves the reader hungry for more.

The first adventure was an easy fun read - just what I was looking for. But with "Tropical Daze" Beckman's style and skill as a writer took a big leap forward and cemented his status as one of my "favorite authors".

There is a little flavor of Nelson DeMille and Randy Wayne White in Beckman's style and approach and I like that. Beckman's style is easy to read, but don't let that fool you. With "Tropical Daze", Beckman solidifies his place as a skilled story-teller.

I literally was laughing one moment and then cursing Beckman the next. How could he be so cruel to his protagonist Captain Jack Stevens? The action in "Tropical Daze" is fast paced, heart pounding and riveting. Sometimes I had to stop reading and take a "commercial break" just to clear my mental palette before moving onto the next beat.

Tantalizingly frustrating, Beckman slams the reader smack dab into Captain Jack's shoes and we feel his every emotion in this roller coaster ride.

The story moves through its paces effortlessly and simply, which is a testament to Beckman's burgeoning skill as an author. He has packed enough surprises, twists and turns into "Tropical Daze" to keep even a jaded reader like me chomping at the bit.

"Tropical Daze" is a nail-biting good time and I recommend it highly.

"Tropical Daze" Dazzles

In Tropical Daze, John Beckman performs some literary legerdemain, creating another stand-alone adventure with his strong leading characters, Jack and Amy, who also happen to have an entire first-novel devoted to them in Tropical Knights. Daze is complete in itself -- with an even larger cast than Knights. John continues the adventure/romance, taking up precisely where the first novel leaves off.

Jack Stevens is back, but Amy Larkin is missing, and much of the story revolves around his search for her, while trying to stay alive. Jack, now captaining his new Moon Maiden II, faces a monster storm, and later plans to steal an airplane to try to save Amy.

No doubt about it: You can't take anyone at face value in this story, from the lovely Mel and her two extremely dubious henchmen; to Marty Karr, the fellow assigned to "handle" Jack, with orders from no less than the CIA.

Just when you thought it was safe for Jack and Amy to stop worrying about the CIA... the good news, as I write this review in December 2012, is that there is a third novel in the series coming up with our heroes ready for action again.

Tropical Daze

Remember the way Ian Fleming always took such fine advantage in his James Bond adventures by lightly weaving details into the stories that could have been lifted from the best travel logs? In his Jack Stevens series John Beckman uses this distinctly pleasant and very informative device even more effectively than did Fleming, particularly with this book, since "Tropical Daze" is set in a series of the most dazzlingly beautiful locales imaginable. Our hero, seeking only peace and quiet in his tropical paradise, lightly driven his search for his lost love Amy Larkin, once again finds himself embroiled in a web of compelling intrigue made even more interesting by a fascinating cadre of well developed surrounding characters. Additionally, Beckman's intimate knowledge of sailing and flying add the credibility of a certain technical depth to the story. This tale, moved along by a high level of danger and excitement, is a guaranteed page-turner!

The title is from the name of a valley there called Tai Pi Vai. Typee was Melville's most popular work during his lifetime; it made him notorious as the "man who lived among the cannibals".

Typee, one of Melville's first works, is still worth reading

Typee was the first work by Herman Melville to actually make him a known writer. It it a quasi-fictional account of his actual experience living among a group of canibals on a South Seas near- paradise. Melville's central character, Tommo, is Melville, and his experiences are broadened to four months instead of Melville's actual four weeks. Melville uses the work to comment freely on the conflict between civilization's growing encroachment upon an unspoiled paradise and the evils that civilization wrought. He also launches into repetitive descriptions of the island of Nukuheva which Melville feels is typical of the lush verdant beauty of all of the Polynesian islands. I taught this book for two years back in the 70's with a group of American literature students. I decided to revive it this year (1998)with a group of honors juniors (American Literature)at my high school. Oddly enough, the book seemed to be more favorably received this year than a couple of decades ago. Some students complained of its repetitive nature, particularly the descriptions, but most found it enjoyable and thought-provoking. The book must be considered in light of the Romantic Era from which it emerged. Accounts of far-off exotic isles and high order adventure were the order of the day. In addition, the blind love of Nature and the admiration of the Rousseau's "noble savage" are hallmarks of the book. One must also think what readers in the 1800's thought of the sensual side of the book. Exotic descriptions of naked island girls, in particular Tommo's lovely Fayaway, left a lot up to the imagination of nineteenth century readers. Whether Tommo's relationship with Fayaway is merely platonic or highly physical is left to the reader to decide though it hints at the latter. Also of interest is Melville's condemnation of missionary work. Though at one point he concedes that the principle of bringing Christianity is good, he admonishes that the islanders should be civilized with benefits not crimes as was then more often the case. I found the book very enjoyable the second time around and would recommend it to teachers as an alternative to Moby Dick or Billy Budd as a representative work of Melville or Amercian Romanticism.

Surface an earthly paradise, dread and horror underneath.

"Typee" is based on Melville's experiences when, as a young man of 22, he "jumped ship" from an American whaling vessel on the island of Nukuheva in the Marquesas Islands of the South Pacific. It is written in a straightforward narrative manner, but it is a work of fiction, NOT a journalistic report, something that is often overlooked. While, like "Moby Dick", it contains lots of factual details, mostly quite accurate as confirmed by subsequent research, it is a much more complex tale than it appears to be on the surface.

For a first novel, written when Melville was only 27 years old, the narrative power is quite impressive, as for example in his description of the escape from the ship over the mountains to the Valley of the Typee. In the early chapters, themes of peace, beauty, and sensuality are combined with Melville's righteous indignation at the activities of Western military and religious intruders to create the illusion of an earthly paradise. Gradually dread, loneliness, horror, and fear of annihilation come to the fore, as "Tommo", the protagonist, becomes convinced that he is being kept for eventual eating at a ritual cannibal feast. He is finally rescued almost by chance, and because of conflict among the Typees.

I read the Oxford World's Classics paperback edition, which has an introduction by Ruth Blair, an Australian professor of English. It was very helpful with Melville's historical and literary sources and the geographical and cultural context. The chapter on "Typee" in "Studies in Classic American Literature" by D.H. Lawrence adds a further depth of understanding. Newton Arvin's biography of Melville helps to place "Typee" in the development of Melville as a writer.

Highly recommended in its own right as a superb example of 19th century American romanticism, with hints of the impending metaphysical explosion of "Moby Dick".

Contaminating contact with the white man

1841. A young man of 23 is looking for adventure, he signs a contract on a New England whaler and travels to the South Pacific. Life on the ship is not what he expected, the captain is a tyrant, the life is a bore, food is terrible. The ship reaches the Marquesas after 15 months, with no commercial success so far and the prospect of another few years of the same. The islands have just been occupied and claimed by the French. What one knows of the locals is full of horror: cannibals! But also of delight: the women! On arrival in the harbour, a fantastic party with the best orgy since 15 months is happening. But nothing can distract our hero from his plan: jump ship, wait for its departure, then look for another way home. He finds a companion for the desertion and does it. Then follows an account of 4 months among the cannibals -- while in reality it lasted only 1 month. This is a fictionally embellished travel and adventure story. 5 years later, a book is published. It will be Melville's first and most successful book during his lifetime. From here on, it went down for him.
The book lets us observe one of the great American writers in his initiation phase. A future ancestor of Conrad and O'Brian, two of my addictions. I wonder why I bypassed him for so long, with the exception of the Whale, which I read 30 years ago. And loved.
Typee gives you an adventure account in exotic surroundings, told in often surprisingly fresh language, but totally free of any scientific pretension: few observations on flora, fauna or geology, but a lot of romantic landscaping. Young Melville was no Maturin.
There is a lot of ethnology, the description of the people, their village and life takes a lot of space, so does the process of miscommunicating between the two white runaways and the tribe. As a matter of fact, not much verbal communication happened, the hero spent most of his time in a kind of fog: what was his status? was he a guest? a captive? a friend? was he destined for BBQ? Only half way through the story does he meet briefly a man who speaks some English, and it becomes clear that he is indeed a captive, but to what purpose is not clear.
He does reflect on the religion of the tribe, as observed by him in the practices of rituals, and concludes that the information spread by missionaries in the US is exaggerating wildly as far as the practices of paganism are concerned. Self-serving, obviously.
He takes a strong position against the morality of our civilization as opposed to the noble naked savages that he gets to know: the white civilized man is the most ferocious animal on the face of the earth, he concludes.
He was a bit in love with fair Fayaway, no doubt.
