  • The Tempest is a play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in 1610–11, and thought by many critics to be the last play that Shakespeare wrote alone. It is set on a remote island, where Prospero, the rightful Duke of Milan, plots to restore his daughter Miranda to her rightful place using illusion and skilful manipulation. He conjures up a storm, the eponymous tempest, to lure his usurping brother Antonio and the complicit King Alonso of Naples to the island. There, his machinations bring about the revelation of Antonio's lowly nature, the redemption of the King, and the marriage of Miranda to Alonso's son, Ferdinand.

    Review
"David Lindley's Tempest is the best edition on the market. [...] If I were ever again to undertake the editing of a Shakespeare play, I would keep Lindley's edition of The Tempest open beside me."
-Studies in Theatre and Performance (UK)

"[Lindley's] edition meets the high standards of the series in an exemplary manner, offering an especially fine introduction."
    -Studies in English Literature

"David Lindley's edition of The Tempest is easily the most outstanding version of this ostensibly straightforward yet hugely teasing play produced over the last thirty years. Its precise and scrupulous commentary notes are careful to the variety of ways the text can be spoken on stage. Its notes on the music and songs are admirably evocative, and its economical account of the huge range of critical views will send thousands of readers out in fruitful chases after the play's own multitudinous interests.

    Book does what it promises
    By Jim Beam
This is a very simple review to write. The book does what it promises. Left hand page is the text of the play, to the right what each character says is given the literary equivalent of subtitles in colloquial english.

For example, a character says about men in a shipwreck: "Not a hair perished. On their sustaining garments not a blemish, but fresher than before."

Confused? Look to the translation on the opposing page: "Nobody was hurt in the slightest. Even their clothes were unstained, and look fresher than before the storm."

Works better than a mere glossary because it puts the meaning of the characters' statements into 21st century English. And Shakespeare is much more enjoyable and comprehensible when you know what is going on.

Kindle Ed. is not Folger Ed.
    By Dear Reader
First, let me say I'm a great fan of Shakespeare, and there's no reason to offer a review of The Tempest here. If you want to know what The Tempest is about, there's plenty of places to find that out. This is a review of the Kindle edition of this edition of The Tempest.

I bought this edition, paying $4.95 for the Kindle version, because I thought that it would be the Folger Shakespeare Library version of The Tempest. It's not. The Folger editions of Shakespeare's plays are handy study aids. Each right hand page of text is accompanied with a left hand page of annotations, including illustrations contemporary with Shakespeare. The spelling has been updated but the language has not been changed.

This Kindle edition includes the memorial verses to Shakespeare found in the First Folio. These can be found in many places. It does not include the Folger's introductions to Shakespeare, or to this play in particular, nor does it include the essays that accompany the Folger editions of the plays.

I have already loaded my Kindle with the Complete Works, for which I paid, I believe, $0.99--a remarkable price for the greatest literature in the English language. There was no reason at all for me to pay $4.95 for something I already have available on my Kindle.

Buyer beware! The for this edition of The Tempest DOES NOT apply to the Kindle edition. Too bad.

    "...his complexion is perfect gallows"
    By Ralph White
The Folger Shakespeare Library presents the optimal format for reading Shakespeare's single plays. Each book provides the background and context of the play, a brief description of the theater as Shakespeare would have known it, and a brief bio of the writer himself. But the most useful feature is the notation on the page facing the text, explaining Shakespeare's usage of words and phrases. There is a wealth of scholarship embedded in these brief notes. An experienced reader of Shakespeare may skip them, to maintain the momentum of the play, but even we may tarry to ascertain his ken.

The Tempest is the birthplace of "there's nothing ill can dwell in such a temple," "he receives comfort like cold porridge," "what's past is prologue," "misery acquaints a man with strange bedfellows," "Oh, brave new world*," and "his complexion is perfect gallows." It is Shakespeare's farewell to London, and it is imaginative and enlightening. It is also timeless, often giving rise to contemporary settings in its production.

Prospero's supernatural powers, permeating the action of the play, will take an additional effort at the "willing suspension of disbelief" which we always take to the theater. Yet we are not at all reluctant when, in his epilogue, he boldly asks us to applaud his players.

    * This phrase, "...brave new world..." was penned in 1611, and should not seem so "new" to our modern ears as it does.

This story focuses on the lives of five men born in the 1970’s. While god may have created them equal, the circumstances of their birth, social environment, parental situation and economic strata set them on very different paths. Over the next forty years their lives are touched by both good and evil as they move toward a destiny in which the lives of each overlap in a series of historical events that form a backdrop for the story.
Born the first of equals the main character Christopher Collins is the son of an IRA member who immigrated to the States to avoid retribution from the British soldiers controlling Northern Ireland. Raised by his father he learns to hate those things that have caused his family heartache and in doing so a good man is irrevocably damaged by prejudice that is all consuming.
Joseph Mills is born the son of a black soldier whose heroism in Vietnam leads to a congressional medal of honor. Joe’s early years are guided by the love and devotion of his father and his Thai mother. Stationed in Fort Benning Georgia, racism was never an issue for young Joe, until one fateful day when he becomes an orphan raised not by black or white but rather by Army green.
William Johnson enters this world the son of a working mother and father who maintain a stable home and good income. By all accounts he is the golden boy whose path is unencumbered and his destiny is undeterred. While only in his teenage years he develops a lifelong interest in politics that sets him on a path with destiny
From the time Michael Murphy JR was a toddler his kind disposition and warming smile were a reflection of his soul. As he grew into manhood he became the perfect son, a loyal friend and a man woman desired. With his good looks, witty personality and genuinely kind demeanor he aspires not for greatness, wealth, or power but rather only for love and happiness.
Terrance Jones was born into a life of hardship, the son of a drug addicted prostitute. He lives with his mother and her abusive pimp where throughout his childhood he is subjected to more degradation than any one person should ever endure. However there comes a turning point where he discovers a skill that will change his life and alter history.
Underlying themes throughout the story include racism, sex, love, hate, greed and power. As the story evolves thhe lives of each of the five men take unexpected twists as their paths cross. Ultimately all five are positioned within a unique political construct designed and manipulated by a man who has been corrupted so completely by power he epitomizes evil.

Patrick Robertson: A Tale Of Adventure, by Brian Hennigan

British novelist Brian Hennigan's drily hilarious antihero Patrick Robertson is a cynical, perpetually sauced master salesman, devoted drinker, and connoisseur of Asia's finest hotels. In Patrick's world, meeting a beautiful stranger for drinks in Bangkok is par for the course. Being kidnapped afterwards by the People's Earth Friendly Liberation Group, mistaken for the Patrick Robertson from the International Monetary Fund, and transported to the jungle (along with several other erroneously-abducted Patrick Robertsons) to meet certain death is decidedly gauche. Patrick must escape his captors, brave the perils of the deadly, Chardonnay-less rainforest and find his way back to civilization. To survive, he must use all his sales training and lust for the good life -- plus a hefty dose of betrayal, murder, theft and identity theft.

Patrick Roberts, you are a DICK!
    By Tracy
An amazing dive into the psyche of a delusional businessman. I knew they were all instruments of the devil. Now I have a sordid back story to support my fears and distrusts. Excellent pool side or beach side read. Might I suggest sun screen.

Hilarious. Deftly lampoons modern life from a unique angle...
    By sonasi
I ordered this book after hearing two separate recommendations from comedians (Maria Bamford and Doug Stanhope) and did not know what to expect, as Hennigan is a first-time author. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it is a great book! The writing is first rate - it's clever, it flow like water, and the style is uniquely sardonic. He has a curiously refreshing way of phrasing things. The story is an absurdly hilarious satire of modern corporate life. And while it was written in '99 and reprinted recently, the humor totally holds up. The main character, being a horrible alcoholic degenerate and liar, is somehow likable and believable. The book lampoons many of the stereotypes one encounters in business and on the road in a way I haven't seen elsewhere.

Since I wouldn't be a good hipster if I didn't compare the book to two other references, I'll say that it is like Confederacy of Dunces meets Kitchen Confidential. Both are written by literary outsiders, and plot-wise, the misadventure of Patrick Robertson are as surreal and funny as Ignatius J Reilly but obviously based on the wily real-world professional experiences of the author as in Bourdain's book.

It is a hilarious pleasure to read. If you're look for a fun, light read with some dark humor and pungent satire, this is a good choice.

My impression is worse than Doug Stanhope's so it was somewhat distracting
    By J. Keirsey
Let this review serve as a request. Brian, please write another book! This wondrous tale is hilarious, unexpected and irreverent in all the right ways. The only problem I had was constantly hearing Brian's voice in my head while I was reading. My impression is worse than Doug Stanhope's so it was somewhat distracting. Honestly this was one of the better fiction books I have read since "Slaughter House Five". The only way it could have been better is if Johnny Depp had written the forward.

This is a great adventure story and a wonderful what if - what if the America that we know was gone ?- what would you do to have freedom? What would you be willing to sacrifice to protect your family and friends? This story is not a how to, it is fiction . However it combines likable characters, and information that we may need same day to survive interspersed with a intriguing plot line. Well worth the read. And I am looking forward to reading more. .

Well developed story for the start of a rich rewarding series. Next book please?!?
    By WellnessReview
Wow, what a nice Book One for a Lost Nation Series... I hope. Unusual story line with well developed characters. The only flaw, if it can even be called a flaw, is in editing needed for the author's proclivity to mix verb tenses from paragraph to paragraph... Easily overlooked because the story is so rich. Well done. When is the next book????

Hamlet: , by William Shakespeare : Illustrated, by William Shakespeare

One of the greatest plays of all time, the compelling tragedy of the tormented young prince of Denmark continues to capture the imaginations of modern audiences worldwide. Confronted with evidence that his uncle murdered his father, and with his mother’s infidelity, Hamlet must find a means of reconciling his longing for oblivion with his duty as avenger. The ghost, Hamlet’s feigned madness, Ophelia’s death and burial, the play within a play, the “closet scene” in which Hamlet accuses his mother of complicity in murder, and breathtaking swordplay are just some of the elements that make Hamlet an enduring masterpiece of the theater.

    Arden Shakespeare Hamlet
    By Nathan Records
I am currently working on my MFA/Directing. I directed Hamlet and am now writing my defense of it. I have two thoughts on this third edition.

After going through this edition, from a point of view of the script, I'm not sure I understand the need to update Harold Jenkins's 2d edition. The script itself was easier to navigate in the 2d edition and I thought Jenkins's notes were more helpful. I also disagree with some of what Thompson and Taylor have to say in their editorial notes below the script. That said, I am biased because I used the 2d edition as a sort of "Hamlet Bible" as I directed the piece. Jenkins's notes were extremely insightful and useful. I became very comfortable with it.

On the other hand, this third edition has some different insight into the play in performance than does the second edition, as well as information on casting and music that was not included in Jenkins. Obviously there is much written about William Shakespeare in the world, and this 3rd edition of Arden is probably the most up-to-date resource for bibliographic material (as well as some photos of past productions of the play). Jenkins edition is 24 years old, ancient in the scholastic world's "what's new" when it comes to sifting the vast quantity of material written on Shakespeare and Hamlet.

Obviously, the needs of the theatrical world for playing Hamlet are different than that of the scholastic world (of which I am currently stuck in both). I think Jenkins is more user-friendly for the theatrician while Thompson & Taylor suit the needs of the scholastic better. My final thought is that a scholar/student of Shakespeare will want to have both the second and third editions for the differences they have to offer.

Middle aged and finally able to read Shakespeare
    By Gilgamesh
I cannot more highly recommend this particular book, No Fear Shakespeare's Hamlet.

I am approaching 50 years old and my only real experience trying to read Shakespeare was in high school where we were assigned roles in class and made to read, without comprehension, Romeo and Juliet and Julius Cesar. In the interim, I tried watching a few plays and dragged my kids to see the play Taming of the Shrew, which they hated because they couldn't understand the language nor the plot. Rather than becoming a Shakespeare hater, I've always felt inadequate and dumb for this huge hole in my education.

My current inspiration to try Shakespeare again was my desire to try and help my high school aged son become more educated and cultured than I have been.

I tried first with the Folger annotated editions of Shakespeare. They look excellent and define the unfamiliar words, but I still could not make sense of a substantial portion of the dialogue. I guess maybe I'm just dumb, I don't know.

Anyway, I saw good reviews about this No Fear series, and I ordered several. So far I have read the modern English translations of Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello, King Lear, and The Tempest. While I feel a bit like I'm 'cheating', I actually have really enjoyed all the plays and at least now I know the plots and the characters and even some of the more subtle themes. I can't answer the complaints that the translations don't adequately translate Shakespeare's meanings. There are a few side notes that point out double meanings and things like that, though there are not extensive footnotes or sidenotes.

To answer those who rate these books one or two stars, my answer is that they are at least a door into the world of Shakespeare for those of us unable to navigate the originals on our own. And they only take a couple of hours to read. It's not like this is a lifetime commitment or anything. The book only costs five bucks, so why not invest a couple of hours and read it? And, for me, I liked the plays so much that I AM now going to dig out the Folger editions and read the originals, with the No Fear books available in case I get in trouble. These modalities of trying to appreciate Shakespeare are not mutually exclusive.

Well, hopefully that's helpful to someone. I wanted to write this so that people would know that these books are not just for lazy students hoping to avoid reading the originals or somehow 'cheat' in their English classes. I'm not a Shakespeare scholar or teacher and never will be, just an ordinary guy, but for me, these books were the window of opportunity that I had been searching for. Two thumbs up, most definitely.

    Best Shakespeare Edition Available: Arden
    By Drew
The Arden editions of Shakespeare are the best available. While they cost a lot more than the standard cheap editions, they have so much more. The Folger editions (probably the most widely available editions of Shakespeare) have footnotes that are quite general and never do they have enough. In addition, they really don't have that much extra information on the play--only a small essay analyzing the modern issues of the play. The Arden editions are truly the scholarly editions of Shakespeare. Ninety percent of the time that I have a question on the text, a footnote provides more information. In addition, a lengthy introduction is included. Everything is documented. While at this point I don't care that much about how the quarto version of Hamlet said "no", when the folio version said "so", it's nice to know that if I have a specific question, the answers in there. My thoughts on Hamlet: Don't fret about understanding the material, just dive in. Shakespeare offers interesting plots to the beginners and vivid prose to pick over to the advanced scholar.

It Takes You To Another Place
    By hikingShoe
I bought this book after reading about Henry David Thoreau in my high school literature book. He writes about his love of nature and tries to show others how to enjoy it. This book brings out the beauty of all the surroundings that many people pass by every day. It also encouraged me to get out and live up my ocasional stroll around the neighborhood. I took this book to school and it even helped relieve me a little stress. I recommend this book to all nature lovers.

    In defense of wilderness
    By Gary Sprandel
More than any book, this argues for experiencing nature and preserving wilderness. Thoreau himself saw that fewer passenger pigeons were visiting and even then was aware of threats. Though first spoken in lectures on 1851, and 1856-1857, and published in June 1862 Atlantic Monthly, a month after his death, it still speak to us in the 21st century. For example ".. what would become of us, if we walked only in a garden or a mall?", . "In wilderness is the preservation of the world." , "To preserve wild animals implies generally the creation of a forest for them to dwell in or resort to. So it is with man". So lace up your shoes, grab your binoculars, and go for a walk and join the tribe of squirrels!

It stood as the only complete translation of the Macnaghten or Calcutta II edition (Egyptian recension) of the "Arabian Nights" until the Malcolm C. and Ursula Lyons translation in 2008.

    From the Inside Flap
Full of mischief, valor, ribaldry, and romance, The Arabian Nights has enthralled readers for centuries. These are the tales that saved the life of Shahrazad, whose husband, the king, executed each of his wives after a single night of marriage. Beginning an enchanting story each evening, Shahrazad always withheld the ending: A thousand and one nights later, her life was spared forever.
This volume reproduces the 1932 Modern Library edition, for which Bennett A. Cerf chose the most famous and representative stories from Sir Richard F. Burton's multivolume translation, and includes Burton's extensive and acclaimed explanatory notes. These tales, including Alaeddin; or, the Wonderful Lamp, Sinbad the Seaman and Sinbad the Landsman, and Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, have entered into the popular imagination, demonstrating that Shahrazad's spell remains unbroken.

A magic carpet ride like no other
    By JLind555
Richard Burton's translation of "The Arabian Nights" is one of the oldest in existence and some people have a problem with this version; it's too old, antiquated, etc.; but for this reviewer, the very fact that it's an early translation lends the tales much of their charm; it underscores the fact that "The Arabian Nights" go back for hundreds of years, all the way back to "once upon a time". Richard Burton introduces us to Sharazad, that seductive storyteller who took the bull by the horns and dared to marry the sultan Shariyar who had been driven mad by the infidelity of his former wife and tried to exorcise the demons of her adultery by marrying a new wife every morning and slaying her that same night. Sharazad knows that a good tale can tame the savage beast much in the way music can, and she keeps the Sultan enchanted night after night with the tales that still enchant us in our own time. We all know about Aladdin and his magic lamp, and Ali Baba and the forty thieves, but there are loads of other treasures in this collection; my personal favorites, aside from Ali Baba, are the story of Ali the Persian (short, succinct, and very funny), and The Lady and Her Five Suitors, a hilarious tale of a woman who lures five men into a trap and then runs off with her boyfriend. And Sharazad, smart lady that she is, took care to insure her own future; not only does she regale her sultan with a thousand and one tales in as many nights, she also presents him with three children during that time, wins the heart of the sultan, and, we suppose, lives happily ever after.

No one knows where the tales originated. Burton suggests that the earliest may date from the 8th century A.D., and the latest may have been as recent as the 16th century, only 200 years before Antoine de Galland translated the tales into French and unfolded them like a magic carpet before the astonished and delighted eyes of his European readers. Burton translated them into English in 1885 and they have been weaving their own spell of enchantment for us ever since. When we open "The Arabian Nights" we step onto our own magic carpet and we're off on a ride of fun and fantasy that lasts until the last page when we close the book and come back down, reluctantly, to earth.

Burton, the Scholar and Adventurer, & The Arabian Nights
    By jf
This is a phenomenal selection of the intricate web of fantasy commonly known as the "Arabian Nights."
Captain Burton's translation remains contested amongst scholars for its subjective indulgement and commentary (among other things). Nevertheless, his was a critical and monumental 16-volume endeavor that brought to the English world the legendary tales Shahrazad told King Shahryar--who exectued his mistresses after one night so as to preserve fidelity--in order to remain alive. It proved the most comprhensive and entertaining, and stands as the definitive translation for many.
But why should you bother with Burton, when you could go with Lane or Galland? As a reader, if your desire is to fully experience these tales as closely as possible in capturing that sense of adventure, excitement, of magic and morality that has fascinated imaginations for centuries, Burton's "plain literal translation" certainly dazzles and entertains, vividly, powerfully, without disappointment. You shall be drawn into the world of the thousand nights and a night, of Islam and Jinns, through Burton's archaic though eloquent diction--a part of the veil of fantasy--and his ample knowledge of Middle Eastern culture.
The present edition offers a vital, "representative" selection of these neatly woven and intertwining tales in one volume.
    * Note: This can be fun, very enjoyable reading with patience, but the lack of paragraph breaks and the language may prove challenging for some.
Also: the hardcover is definitely a better choice, as it has placed the selected footnotes on the bottom of the page they appear on rather than the back of the book - like the paperback.

Wonderful tales and an excellent look at Arabic culture
    By bixodoido
We are all familiar with the stories of Ali Baba, Aladdin, and Sinbad. But where did these tales come from? The answer lies in this wonderful (condensed) volume known as the 'Arabian Nights.'
The story is of a woman, Scheherazade, who marries a king. The king's custom is to spend one night with a woman and execute her in the morning. To avoid this, Scheherazade tells him a tale, but leaves part of it unfinished, thus gaining the king's interest and insuring her survival for another day so she can finish the tale. Being clever, she never finishes it, but keeps it continuously going, until the king finally spares her life.
The stories presented here, though often somewhat crude, have great moral lessons to be learned. The serve as a sort of moral reminder as to how a good person should act.
When Richard Burton translated the Nights, he collected as many manuscripts as possible and pieced together the tales. Many had been created centuries earlier, and were often told during gatherings among friends. Burton, through his unparalelled knack for translation, managed to capture all the magic and mystery that are the Arabian Nights.
Besides the delightful stories and good lessons to be learned, the Nights serve another purpose--they provide an intimate look at the culture of the time. By examining their legends, one can gain a basic understanding of how Arabic culture functions. There is as much to be learned about the people who tell these stories as there is from the stories themselves.
I read this book for historical and cultural value, and found it to be abundant in both. Besides that, though, I encountered a mesmerizing set of tales which will be entertaining to any audience, even (after some revision and editing) children.

    Operator #5 #10 January 1935, by RadioArchives.com, Curtis Steele

A happy crowd, inspired by the spirit of Christmas, was milling joyously in Times Square, New York. Suddenly, cutting through the sounds of gaiety, came a shrill whine. It became louder, and at the very second of midnight, a gigantic shell exploded, killing, maiming, and destroying! At 12-hour intervals thereafter - no man knew in advance where - another shell burst devastatingly. Two great powers were openly accused in the newspapers. War - savage and bloody - was imminent, and Operator #5 realized that he had encountered his most cunning foe: the clever woman spy Radi Havara!

Jimmy Christopher was the star of the most audacious pulp magazine ever conceived. With the rise of European fascism in the form of Benito Mussolini of Italy, Adolf Hitler of Nazi Germany, and General Francisco Franco of Spain - not to mention myriad lesser despots and dictators - Americans began to fear for their future. The dread of being drawn into a second world war became a topic of grave concern in that Depression year of 1934.

At pulp magazine publisher Popular Publications, they took note of this isolationist trend and commissioned writer Frederick C. Davis to help develop a hero for their new monthly magazine, entitled Secret Service Operator #5.

"The Red Invader" is read with stirring intensity by Milton Bagby. Originally published in the January 1935 issue of Operator #5 magazine.

Tense, well-plotted, nicely detailed and intense pulp storytelling
By S. Craig Zahler (Crime, Western, Sci-Fi Author)
(Note: I read the original pulp issue from 1935.)
After reading a few issues of Operator #5, all of which I like, The Red Invader stands out as the best. Frederick C. Davis is very well liked in pulp circles, and I definitely like a ton of what he does here (and in the Op #5 books Green Death Mists and Blood Reign of the Dictator, which are almost as good).
My one complaint with his writing (here and elsewhere) is that his action sequences are written like sloppy book reports--there is information, but no flow, and he regularly substitutes the word "as" for the word "and" as if they are wholly interchangeable. His action lacks the sense of timing and spatial orientation that exist in the works of Max Brand, Robert E. Howard, and the #1 master of action, Norvell W. Page, and even second tier guys like Paul Chadwick (Secret Agent X) and Emile C. Tepperman (the second Op #5 writer) provide clearer action.

Regardless of that criticism, I am a big fan of Frederick C. Davis, who in this adventure (and others) exceeds most if not all of his hero pulp contemporaries in three big ways:
    1. Intelligent tactics. The bad guys have good plans, not just "consolidate the bad guys" or "poison gas guns." And thus, the plans of the good guys must be similarly smart.
    2. Expert escalation of tension. The Red Invader should be taught in a course entitled, "How to Gradually Build Tension from Page 1 until The End." The plotting is sharp, purposeful, and suffocating in this tale.
    3. An abundance of believable details. The weaponry and foes described in this adventure feel authentic, and the main weapon is a truly harrowing threat.
I can honestly say that I am not sure which of the historical footnotes about weapons and politics are fact and which are fiction. This blurry line also helps sell the story's big ideas.

Do you want to read a tense, paranoia-inducing, grandly explosive, xenophobic, expertly-plotted war fever dream? Read this.

    Loved it
    By herb
I am always reluctant to enthuse over a book written by good friends who have not been novelists for very long, but this book was a hoot! It had lots of plot and action, and kept my attention right to the end. As a SCUBA diver, it had the added fun of plenty of really good underwater action. And I am a sucker for good endings. The writing is just fine, and the interweaving of events is not muddled or confusing.

I especially liked that I could read a few chapters first before downloading it to my Kindle. Thanks for that.

Well done, Jack and Sue!! --from Cathy Church and Herb Rafael
