About the Author
Thomas A Farmer grew up in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. His childhood instilled an early love of mountains and exploding space ships, which are only vaguely related to one another. Growing up with parents who were science-fiction geeks, he was immersed in things like the Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, and Babylon 5 early on. All of that explains why he thought writing fiction was a good idea-but here we are nonetheless! When he's not writing, he makes a living teaching fencing.

An Intelligent Introduction to the Apocalypse

Thomas A. Farmer’s The Week the World Ended establishes the premise rather quickly: an ancient race, the Korovega, invade a multitude of capital series throughout the world and reduce them to ruin in an effort to take the planet as their own. The novel focuses on a group of survivors in East Tennessee over the course of a week during the initial incursions by the Korovega.

The trio of main characters – Owen, Sam, and Ben – are well-defined characters, and the dynamics among them are among the best portions of the novel. How they work together and how they interact with others feels real, and in an apocalyptic storyline, if we don’t care about the central characters or at least believe in them, everything else falls apart. The human relationships carry this tale. The trio invite other friends and acquaintances to hide out at Ben’s cabin. Of course, there is also conflict among the humans of this tale, especially in the case of George Sinon, whom I guarantee many readers will hope gets punched in the face repeatedly.

Ben’s cabin is as far removed from civilization as they can get without introducing complete isolation. This allows them to make trips into town for supplies and, later, introduces great conflict, for the Korovega are spreading their influence. Sightings of the Korovega soon occur everywhere, not just in major cities.

Not much is explained about the Korovega’s history, which is wise, because sometimes less is more. What we do know is that the cities they’ve destroyed have been affected by a blight, which effectively pulls moisture out of the air and kills the ecosystem in the immediate vicinity. The military cannot overcome the Korovega; the creatures quickly wipe out any opposition in these initial attacks due to their overwhelming numbers and devastating weapons. Had more been explained about the Korovega, the internal logic of the story might have been compromised. Farmer keeps our knowledge of the enemy at a minimum, thus rendering them more frightening.

The earliest parts of the conflict for our group are slow going. Once the encounters with the Korovega begin, each battle escalates until a climatic showdown that makes you wonder what comes after the first week ends.

My biggest complaints with some of the logic are simply the breakdown of society. Would anyone still be working their menial jobs at the end of the world to allow others to buy goods? Would Amazon and other online retailers still be shipping items? The idea is a logistical nightmare. I almost believe most of the goods online would be a pipe dream when most of the major cities get wiped out. Looting would probably be the name of the game, and the acquisition of goods and materials would soon turn humans against one another. A bit of this idea is briefly explored, but not fully.

Most apocalypse tales collapse under the weight of their ambitions if a solid conclusion isn’t introduced or the resolution is ridiculously flimsy. This is only the first week of the apocalypse, however, and without spoiling the ending itself, it’s good to know that Farmer is trying to establish that the first week itself is hell, but there is more to this conflict. The question is, what comes next?

The Week the World Ended is a great read, with fascinating characters and an intimidating threat. I hope to see a continuation of this novel. The Week After, perhaps? Or The Month the World Ended? The Year the World Ended? There’s plenty more to explore, and Farmer has easily set himself up for more excursions into this conflicted world.

Strong Debut

The book is a solid read. People state that it is slow to start, but the end of the world is a rather arduous set-up, especially when it appears therewill be more to come. If you are from the area, it will definitely bring a novel joy going ro and from the landmarks you know.

Once the action starts, the pace is a thrill ride. Every moment of nigh safety only ratchets up danger.

My major complaints are primarily of the otherworldly enemy, and what I feel is a bit of incongruity between the world (present day) as it is presented. I just feel like the enemy's weakness would have been discovered by others parties, and that the singleminded destruction of humanity would have also included infrastructure that was helping survivors remain.

Other than that, an incredibly strong debut, leaving this guy's curiosity piqued for further work. Definitely give it a read if you are from the volunteer state!

This book was written very well, with very understandable characters and a strong focus on real-life reactions to fictional circumstances. The characters are all excellently created and easy to follow, but quirky enough to have strong individual personalities. The plot line is not in my usual genre, but thrilling none the less, with an apocalyptic war spreading to the little state of Tennessee. When many movies and books feature huge cities, it's refreshing to have characters battle on more familiar turf. Anyone who lives in, has been to, or ought to visit East Tennessee, will enjoy the twisting and turning scenery in this book.

As a librarian, I am proud to have this book in our collection, and gladly encourage others to read it as well.

About the Author
The author is a 75-year-old retiree that winters in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. His wife’s subtle suggestions resulted in his first novel, Among the Tin Cans and Broken Glass. This book is based on his personal experiences as a police officer in Detroit during the 1960s. The author’s life-long love of bird dogs led to a work of non-fiction, Good Ones and Scallywags. This is not a dog training book, but a collection of short stories about dogs, birds and people he’s encountered across the country, thus the thought-provoking title.

Outstanding!

Having lived in the Detroit area during the riots, and being very familar with the locations that the author discusses, I found the book fascinating. Additionally, having worked for Dow Corning for over 30 years myself, the people and events in Midland brought back many memories.
But regardless of whether you are familar with these locations I believe anyone with an interest in understanding what it is really like inside a big city police force would find this book interesting.

Well written, concise, and written somewhat like a series of short stories, but they are all tied together nicely.

Great read, recommended!

A great book for those interested in law enforcement

Mr Novak's novel from his time spent as a Detroit police officer in the 1960s depicts well what an officer goes through on the job. The author does not soft-peddle the rough language that occurs on the streets and does a great job describing people and events. Written in diary style it is easy to follow his life journey during those years. Anyone intrigued by the real life of a law officer will enjoy this book.

Gripping Insight into Turbulent Detroit of the 1960s

This book is a well written, extremely readable account of the adventures of a Detroit policeman in the 1960s including the 67 riots. It depicts accurately the racial tension of that era. The main character's morality comes through loud and clear as well as the immorality of many of his flawed fellow officers. But morality aside, this book can be read a series of breath taking adventures. Well done!

Sally is twenty-six years old, working on a doctorate in biology, and is frustrated with the responsibility of raising her brother. David is eighteen and emotionally scarred by the death of their parents. He lives in a near trance and seeks escape in video game worlds. The two are in the Amazon with a team from the University of North Alabama to investigate ways to reinvigorate the rainforest. The task becomes impossible when strange creatures appear after a cataclysmic event and begin harvesting the rainforest on a massive scale. Before long, the situation turns into full scale war as the nations of Earth, led by the United States and Brazil, struggle to respond the threat in one of the most remote places on the planet.
There are several other key characters. One of which is Josh O'Brian, an ex-CIA mercenary who gets swept up during the harvest. Another is Major Marcus Antinaiso, a Brazilian officer who leads a company of soldiers charged with investigating the mysterious and overpowering radio transmissions coming from the depths of the rainforest. The transmissions are so powerful they interfere with communications up to 300 miles away.
As planes fall from the sky in central Brazil, the world is changed forever with the realization that unknown and dangerous forces are stirring in the heart of the worlds mightiest forest.

Phenomenal Read

What a gripping read. John Berry wrote an amazing book.
How the main characters overcome their fears and persevere in their journey will keep you reading. I was fully immersed.
Highly recommended read for avid science-fiction readers.

Great New Sci-Fi Author!

Berry goes beyond the typical expectations of science fiction by developing characters whose transitions in the face of tragedy indicate the author's grasp on the human condition. A dynamic cast is portrayed to dismiss their unique personal weaknesses in order to benefit a greater cause. The dangers of the Amazon (in the absence of the book's monsters) are well-articulated and demonstrate that significant research was performed on the region. Perhaps the most impressive attribute of Amazon Harvest, though, is the morbidity of the story's antagonists: the creatures from an unknown domain are completely oblivious that humans are the Earth's reigning food chain champions. Their irreverence to our significance as a species made for plenty of spine-chilling scenarios. The ambiguity of their origin and the fate of the characters will leave readers in high anticipation of the sequel. Excellent read!

A new take on the "Alien Invader" theme.

Who is going to engross the next 6 hours of your life? John Flippin' Berry. This book has two things that are rarely seen together, explosions and complex character development. Mr. Berry takes you on a horrific tour of the Amazon as Lovecraftian monsters and piranha wait around every turn. This book has plenty of action and adventure. The best part? The Harvesters. Leviathan invaders and their spider tick brethren that are out to do one thing, mess stuff up. Did I mention scantily clad women? Tapirs? Musical numbers? Two of those things are in the book you wont be putting down today.

The Divine Comedy (Italian: Divina Commedia [diˈviːna komˈmɛːdja]) is an epic poem by Dante Alighieri, begun c. 1308 and completed 1320, a year before his death in 1321. It is widely considered the preeminent work of Italian literature and is seen as one of the greatest works of world literature.The poem's imaginative vision of the afterlife is representative of the medieval world-view as it had developed in the Western Church by the 14th century. It helped establish the Tuscan language, in which it is written, as the standardized Italian language. It is divided into three parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. On the surface, the poem describes Dante's travels through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise or Heaven; but at a deeper level, it represents, allegorically, the soul's journey towards God. At this deeper level, Dante draws on medieval Christian theology and philosophy, especially Thomistic philosophy and the Summa Theologica of Thomas Aquinas. Consequently, the Divine Comedy has been called "the Summa in verse". The work was originally simply titled Comedìa and the word Divina was added by Giovanni Boccaccio. The first printed edition to add the word divina to the title was that of the Venetian humanist Lodovico Dolce,[8] published in 1555 by Gabriele Giolito de' Ferrari.

Long narrative poem originally titled Commedia (about 1555 printed as La divina commedia) written about 1310-14 by Dante. The work is divided into three major sections--Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso--which trace the journey of a man from darkness and error to the revelation of the divine light, culminating in the beatific vision of God. It is usually held to be one of the world's greatest works of literature. The plot of The Divine Comedy is simple: a man is miraculously enabled to visit the souls in Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise. He has two guides: Virgil, who leads him through the Inferno and Purgatorio, and Beatrice, who introduces him to Paradiso. Through these fictional encounters taking place from Good Friday evening in 1300 through Easter Sunday and slightly beyond, Dante the character learns of the exile that is awaiting him (an actual exile that had already occurred at the time of writing). This device allowed Dante not only to create a story out of his exile but also to explain how he came to cope with personal calamity and to offer suggestions for the resolution of Italy's troubles as well. Thus, Dante's story is historically specific as well as paradigmatic; his exile serves as a microcosm of the problems of a country, and it also becomes representative of the Fall of Man. The basic structural component of The Divine Comedy is the canto. The poem consists of 100 cantos, which are grouped into the three major sections, or canticles. Technically there are 33 cantos in each canticle and one additional canto, contained in the Inferno, that serves as an introduction to the entire poem. For the most part the cantos range from 136 to 151 lines. The poem's rhyme scheme is the terza rima (aba, bcb, cdc, etc.) Thus, the divine number three is present in every part of the work. Dante adopts the classical convention of a visit to the land of the dead, but he adapts it to a Christian worldview by beginning his journey there. The Inferno represents a false start during which Dante, the character, must be disabused of harmful values that somehow prevent him from rising above his fallen world. Despite the regressive nature of the Inferno, Dante's meetings with the damned are among the most memorable moments of the poem: the Neutrals, the virtuous pagans, Francesca da Rimini, Filipo Argenti, Farinata degli Uberti, Piero delle Vigne, Brunetto Latini, the simoniacal popes, Ulysses, and Ugolino impose themselves upon the reader's imagination with tremendous force. Nonetheless, the journey through the Inferno primarily signifies a process of separation and thus is only the initial step in a fuller development. In the Purgatorio the protagonist's spiritual rehabilitation commences. There Dante subdues his own personality so that he will be able to ascend. He comes to accept the essential Christian image of life as a pilgrimage, and he joins the other penitents on the road of life. At the summit of Purgatory, where repentant sinners are purged of their sins, Virgil departs, having led Dante as far as human knowledge is able--to the threshold of Paradise. Beatrice, who embodies the knowledge of divine mysteries bestowed by Grace, continues Dante's tour. In the Paradiso true heroic fulfillment is achieved. Dante's poem gives expression to those figures from the past who seem to defy death and who inspire in their followers a feeling of exaltation and a desire for identification. About the Author
John Ciardi was a distinguished poet and professor, having taught at Harvard and Rutgers universities, and a poetry editor of The Saturday Review. He was a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the National Institute of Arts and Letters. In 1955 he won the Harriet Monroe Memorial Award, and in 1956, the Prix de Rome. He died in 1986.

Excellent for the first time reader...I should know

I always felt it a crime that I made it through high school and college without reading this. I recently read The Dante Club which re-ignited my interest in finally reading The Divine Comedy. I looked at all the versions out there and decided on this one. I am so glad I did.

Each Canto begins with a synopsis. If all you wanted to know was the plot of the Divine Comedy you could just read all of these half page summaries (but you'd really miss out.)

Then the canto in beautiful verse.

Then copious notes that explain the minute details about whom you meet in the Canto and relevant events in history. The notes are as interesting as the Cantos themselves.

I am so glad I picked this copy up. I have now read and ENJOYED Dante's Divine Comedy. I highly recommend this as a starting point. It is extremely accessible.

Superb and accessable translation of Dante's masterpiece

Those of us not fortunate enough to be able to read Italian and thus savor Dante's masterpiece in its original language have the next best thing--the comprehensively noted translation by another great poet, the late John Ciardi. This superb and handsome hardbound edition of Ciardi's translation of Dante's Divine Comedy is not simply the collected, earlier translations of The Inferno, The Purgatorio, and The Paradiso, which in past years appeared in separate paperback editions: This edition is the final Ciardi translation from earlier forms which were "a work in progress." In this magnificent final translation, the non-Italian-speaking reader can savor Dante's extrodinary fusion of morality with the metaphorical architecture of Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven, explored with pathos and sympathy for the human condition which, in the mind of Dante, constantly yearns for The All in All. A volume that should be required reading for anyone who aspires to understand man's place in the universe.

One of the best literary masterpieces of all time!

To be well read means that you have read the Comedy (at least once). At once haunting, dark and yet grotesquely beautiful, Dante has written for us the definitive Catholic epic poem of hell, purgatory and heaven. Mark Musa is one of the foremost Dante scholars in the world & teaches at the university of Indiana. His footnotes & commentaries are exceptional, a trademark that is not only a luxury but is, in fact, a necessity when it comes to Dante. I would recommend everyone read not just the Inferno, but all three canticles of the Comedy as a whole. One cannot truly understand everything in Inferno without reading thru the entire poem (including Purgatory and Paradise). Would also admonish that anyone interested in this work begin with Virgil's Aeneid and also read some Homer, Plato & Aristotle as well as some Roman history for a rough background of the work. Be advised that the bard expects you to have read everything he has so that you will catch all of his allusions. Once again, this is where Musa's footnotes come in handy, but there is still no substitute for actually reading thru the primary texts that serve as the foundation of this work. Also, would advise that one read the short work, La Vita Nuova (The New Life) before reading the Comedy, as it is basically a prologue to his epic. It will also help make more sense re: the pilgrim's near-obsessive love that he has for Beatrice. This is truly one of the great epic poems ever written and it positions Dante right up there with Homer, Goethe & Virgil.

Candide, ou l'Optimisme (/ˌkænˈdiːd/; French: [kɑ̃did]) is a French satire first published in 1759 by Voltaire, a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment. The novella has been widely translated, with English versions titled Candide: or, All for the Best (1759); Candide: or, The Optimist (1762); and Candide: or, Optimism (1947). It begins with a young man, Candide, who is living a sheltered life in an Edenic paradise and being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism (or simply "optimism") by his mentor, Professor Pangloss. The work describes the abrupt cessation of this lifestyle, followed by Candide's slow, painful disillusionment as he witnesses and experiences great hardships in the world. Voltaire concludes with Candide, if not rejecting optimism outright, advocating a deeply practical precept, "we must cultivate our garden", in lieu of the Leibnizian mantra of Pangloss, "all is for the best" in the "best of all possible worlds". Candide is characterised by its sarcastic tone as well as by its erratic, fantastical and fast-moving plot. Political satire doesn't age well, but occasionally a diatribe contains enough art and universal mirth to survive long after its timeliness has passed. Candide is such a book. Penned by that Renaissance man of the Enlightenment, Voltaire, Candide is steeped in the political and philosophical controversies of the 1750s. But for the general reader, the novel's driving principle is clear enough: the idea (endemic in Voltaire's day) that we live in the best of all possible worlds, and apparent folly, misery and strife are actually harbingers of a greater good we cannot perceive, is hogwash.

Telling the tale of the good-natured but star-crossed Candide (think Mr. Magoo armed with deadly force), as he travels the world struggling to be reunited with his love, Lady Cunegonde, the novel smashes such ill-conceived optimism to splinters. Candide's tutor, Dr. Pangloss, is steadfast in his philosophical good cheer, in the face of more and more fantastic misfortune; Candide's other companions always supply good sense in the nick of time. Still, as he demolishes optimism, Voltaire pays tribute to human resilience, and in doing so gives the book a pleasant indomitability common to farce. Says one character, a princess turned one-buttocked hag by unkind Fate: "I have wanted to kill myself a hundred times, but somehow I am still in love with life. Delicious Irony Amidst Swift-Like Satire

Ever since philosophers began thinking about the meaning of life, a favorite question has been "Why do bad things happen to good people?". In Voltaire's day, this issue was primarily pursued either from the perspective of faith (everything that happens is God's will and must be for Divine purpose) or of reason (What do these events mean to you, as you interpret them subjectively?). Infuriated by the reaction by some members of the church to a horrible loss of life from an earthquake in Lisbon, Voltaire wrote this hard-biting satire of the human condition to explore these questions.
Before reading further, let me share a word of caution. This book is filled with human atrocities of the most gruesome sort. Anything that you can imagine could occur in war, an Inquisition, or during piracy happens in this book. If you find such matters distressing (as many will, and more should), this book will be unpleasant reading. You should find another book to read.
The book begins as Candide is raised in the household of a minor noble family in Westphalia, where he is educated by Dr. Pangloss, a student of metaphysical questions. Pangloss believes that this is the best of all possible worlds and deeply ingrains that view into his pupil. Candide is buoyed by that thought as he encounters many setbacks in the course of the book as he travels through many parts of Europe, Turkey, and South America.
All is well for Candide until he falls in love with the Baron's daughter and is caught kissing her hand by the Baron. The Baron immediately kicks Candide out of the castle (literally on the backside), and Candide's wanderings begin. Think of this as being like expulsion from the Garden of Eden for Adam. Soon the penniless Candide finds himself in the Bulgarian army, and receiving lots of beatings while he learns to drill.
The story grows more far-fetched with each subsequent incident. To the casual reader, this exaggeration can seem unnecessary and annoying. It will remind you of the most extreme parts of Swift in Gulliver's Travels and Rabelais in Gargantua and Pantagruel. But subtly, Voltaire is using the exaggeration to lure the reader into making complacent judgments about complacency itself that Voltaire wants to challenge. The result is a deliciously ironical work that undermines complacency at a more fundamental level than I have seen done elsewhere. Basically, Candide challenges any view you have about complacency that is defined in terms of the world-view of those who are complacent.
Significant changes of circumstances (good and ill) occur to all of the members of the Baron's household over the course of the story. Throughout, there is much comparing of who has had the worst luck, with much feeling sorry for oneself.
That is the surface story. Voltaire is, however, a master of misdirection. Beneath the surface, Voltaire has another purpose for the book. He also wants to expose the reader to questioning the many bad habits that people have that make matters worse for everyone. The major themes of these undercurrents are (1) competing rather than to cooperating, (2) employing inhumane means to accomplish worldly (and many spiritual) ends, (3) following expected rules of behavior to show one's superiority over others that harm and degrade others, (4) focusing on money and power rather than creating rich human relationships, (5) hypocritical behavior, and (6) pursuing ends that society approves of rather than ends that please oneself.
By the end of the story, the focus shifts again to a totally different question: How can humans achieve happiness? Then, you have to reassess what you thought about the book and what was going on in Voltaire's story. Many readers will choose to reread the book to better capture Voltaire's perspective on that final question, having been surprised by it.
Candide is one of my favorite books because it treats important philosophical questions in such an unusual way. Such unaccustomed matching of treatment and subject matters leaves an indelible impression that normal philosophical arguments can never match. Voltaire also has an amazing imagination. Few could concoct such a story (even by using illegal substances to stimulate the subconscious mind). I constantly find myself wondering what he will come up with next. The story is so absurd that it penetrates the consciousness at a very fundamental level, almost like doing improvisation. In so doing, Voltaire taps into that feeling of "what else can happen?" that overcomes us when we are at our most pessimistic. So, gradually you will find yourself identifying with the story -- even though nothing like this could ever happen to you. Like a good horror story, you are also relieved that you can read about others' troubles and can put your own into perspective. This last point is the fundamental humanity of the story. You see what a wonderful thing a kind word, a meal, or a helping hand can be. That will probably inspire you to offer those empathic actions more often.
After you have finished Candide, I suggest that you ask yourself where complacency about your life and circumstances is costing you and those you care about the potential for more health, happiness, peace, and prosperity. Then take Voltaire's solution, and look around you for those who enjoy the most of those four wonderful attributes. What do those people think and do differently from you?

Very funny, very dark classic...a must read!

It is probably fair to say that there is no book that is quite like Voltaire's 'Candide'. This is a venomous satire of the 'Optimistic' philosophy and outlook of enlightenment thinkers such as Leibniz and Alexander Pope. As such, it is served well by the unique combination of repeated brutality and a deft, light touch. If that last comment doesn't make sense, then you'll just have to READ THE BOOK.
At a mere 144 pages (in this edition), this is a classic that is a breeze to read. As to the charge that this book is too "violent" or "in bad taste", I would only ask you to remember that Voltaire was furious that learned members of a "civilized" society (like Leibniz, Pope, and even Rousseau)could claim that the apparent senseless violence and mayhem wrought by disasters, war, disease, man's cruelty, etc. was actually only a part of some 'greater good' - after all, God (being perfect) could not 'logically' created anything but the 'best of all possible' universes.
Voltaire's touch is so light and understated that I defy anyone to write anything that contains a third of the violence in 'Candide' and still manages to read as breezily and somehow be genuinely funny.
But dark satire must be funny - otherwise it lapses into pedantry.
Read it - even if you do not like it, I guarantee you that it will disturb you and make you think.
And for that, we can thank Voltaire.

No the story doesn't change from edition to edition, but the supplementary material provided does change. Candide isn't just some hectic adventure story. It really fails as literature in this regard, and certainly Voltaire's purpose was not to make you chuckle while you whiled away a few empty hours. He would weep to think that you missed out on what he was really trying to tell you. Rest easy. I am not going to launch into a stuffy monologue on Leibnitz and 18th century French Catholicism, but in essence you should know that this is the essence of the story. The philosopher Leibnitz (who with Isaac Newton independently invented Calculus) explained the existence of evil in the world thusly: God, in his infinite wisdom, thought of all possible worlds that he could create, and he chose this one; therefore this must be the best of all possible worlds. Voltaire was also continually chastising the Catholic Church for it's lack of tolerance of other beliefs, and for its aristocratic pomp.
Enter now the Norton Critical Edition of Candide. This book presents the 75 page story along with 130 additional pages of various articles and essays on the times in which it was written; commentary by Voltaire and by his contemporaries; and critiques of the story by modern writers. Sure there are always a few dull, academic essays making their mandatory appearance in a book like this, but my suggestion is just to skip them. After all there are a lot of them to choose from.
Learn the story behind the story so to speak. After all it is the background of Candide that makes Candide the forceful satire that it is.

About the Author

Hard Boiled Block

SMAD is an early Block work. In it, the development of his sparse writing style, quick turning plots, and complex alienated protagonist is already well formed. The plot seems a bit far-fetched but he has great fun with it it as the ball starts rolling.

This is a work for fans who want to see the early Block in action. His later works are vastly better developed and more sophisticated. That said, it is interesting to see what he was like in his early days. If you like reading some of Ed McBain's early 87th Precinct novels and seeing how his work developed, you'll get the same sort of kick here.

If you're new to Block, go pick up 'Like a Lamb to the Slaughter', 'Eight Million Ways to Die', or 'When the Sacred Ginmill Closes'. These are all works of true refinement in the crime genre.

The Best of Block's early novels

Easily the best of Block's early novels, far better than the very routine stuff Hard Case has been unearthing (LUCKY AT CARDS, GRIFTER'S GAME, GIRL WITH THE LONG GREEN HEART). A relatively straightforward -- though interestingly presented -- heist novel, it really rises above due to it's protagonist, a genuine psychotic who yet, in a strange way, is not unsympathetic.

Military noir provides character study

Lawrence Block wrote this military noir early in his writing career about Paul Kavanagh, an ex-Green Beret who retires from the trade. What's interesting is that Paul falls in love with his solitary, Crusoe-like life on a deserted Florida Keys island. George Dattner hunts up Paul and they plot to steal a shipment of nuclear weapons from the military in the Dakotas. Paul tells their caper in a low-keyed, conversational manner. He gets so far in, you're left wondering if he'll ever get back to his island paradise a million dollars richer. This novel is a brisk read, and one of the better retired-from-the-trade crime books. Don't expect flashy descriptions and over-the-top plotlines. Mr. Block is interested in his protagonist first.

First read this book while stuck at sea in the bowels of an LPD. I was never a fan of fantasy. After reading the trilogy, I had to own them. After many moves, my first copies were lost. I had to replace them so that I could read them again.

Fun, interesting read - Couldn't put it down

I finished this book a few minutes ago. I suppose you can guess how much I liked it by the fact that I'm now searching Amazon for more titles by Mr. Hughs. It was entirely readable--Hughs has a natural voice, one that speaks on the level of the reader. He kept the action going, made me really love the characters, and intrigued me with the world he created. Hope you give the book a try!
