Nice and fast paced space opera

“Doc” Smith was a prolific writer of the Sci-fi genre. Very popular in the fifties and sixties, Lorde Tedric was a “Flash Gordon” type of hero in a mixed Sci-fi – Fantasy setting.

This is still a very entertaining story of a hero from another universe, which fought against sorcery and superstition and was “transported” to our universe for a purpose by the mysterious scientists.

Graduated from an “elite” academy (degenerated through the ages), Lord Tedric’s first mission will involve making contacts and allies, investigate a slav…errr…laborers revolt in a mining operation, face a powerful ancient enemy of Humanity and unveil a mysterious terror. All this while keeping “internal” enemies at bay.

Interesting, fast paced and exciting, it is obviously highly dated specially in the tech department (expected). Even so, it is interesting to check the development of the genre and to meet an interesting character or two.

Beatrix Potter is timeless

Beatrix Potter's stories are all so sweet and simple, and I'm glad my kids get the chance to love them too. I just wish this version included her original illustrations. My 3 and 5 year olds loved it anyway, and their vocabulary has expanded with regular use of words like "mischief" after reading. A must read for all children!

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (originally The Rime of the Ancyent Marinere) is the longest major poem by the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, written in 1797–98 and published in 1798 in the first edition of Lyrical Ballads. Modern editions use a revised version printed in 1817 that featured a gloss. Along with other poems in Lyrical Ballads, it was a signal shift to modern poetry and the beginning of British Romantic literature.

"It is an ancient Mariner, and he stoppeth one of thee...." Although these ominous lines perennially instill fear of final exams and term papers in the minds of high school students and Romantic English majors, they're not often remembered by adults. Mason's reading of Coleridge's 1796 epic poem is at once hypnotic and stirring. The Academy Award-nominated actor reads the chilling tale involving clashes with sea monsters, a boat swarming with zombies and a dice game with Death in an authoritative English accent. Like the ocean surrounding the Mariner's ship, his voice ebbs and flows with the imaginative poem's various heights. He quickly rattles off, "water, water, every where, and all the boards did shrink; Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink" but gently whispers "And I had done an hellish thing, and it would work `em woe: For all averred, I had killed the bird that made the breeze to blow." Coleridge (1772-1834), uses words to make the fantastical believable, and here, Mason brings those words vividly to life. A bonus track features Mason's animated reading of The Hunting of the Snark, an eight-canto poem by Lewis Carroll.

Grade 4 Up-- One of the classic poems of the romantic period of English literature has been illustrated with charcoal drawings and full-color, full-page pastel seascapes by Young. Coleridge's masterpiece has much to recommend it to a modern audience because of its central theme of the importance of ``all things both great and small;'' also, the mysterious supernatural events, the skeleton ship, and the zombie crew are occult touches that will appeal to many young readers. However, Coleridge's 18th-century rhymes and references make difficult reading and, although the marginal asides are helpful, much of the religious structure of the poem and many of the archaic words remain obscure. Although they may admire Young's dramatic pictures and will certainly enjoy the rich format of the book, few 20th-century readers will persevere unaided through all seven parts of this work of penitence. Its primary audience is adults who wish to preserve and use a recognized piece of English literature by reading it aloud to a new generation of young people. --Shirley Wilton, Ocean County College, Toms River, NJ

A prolific illustrator (Caldecott winner for Lon Po Po, 1989) takes on one of the 19th century's most enduring narrative poems, providing six double-spread and two single-page illustrations in glowing, impressionistic pastels plus many vignettes rendered in charcoal. From its elegant jacket--the title, gold on wine, imposed on a bird's-eye view of the ethereal albatross flying up from the ghostly ship on a turquoise and emerald sea--this is a handsome edition. The b&w drawings break the long text, helping modern readers to visualize the action and sometimes reflecting the horror, though the understated style is not intrusive and leaves one free to imagine details. The more dramatic, richly colored pastels may draw new readers to this story of ghostly adventure, terror, retribution, and penance; a few will glory in the magnificent language, and some may even take note of the message for our times: ``He prayeth best, who loveth best/ All things both great and small.'' Exquisite!

This small volume is a treasure. In hardcover, the pages are silver, the dark blue typography is a beautiful old-style Roman, perhaps Garamond or Times, good-sized and leaded out for easy readability. And the illustrations are unsurpassed.

First, the illustrator: Gustave Dore was born in 1832, sixty years after the birth of Coleridge. He died in 1883. Coleridge preceded him in death by 49 years. Coleridge was born in 1772 and died in 1834. Dore was born in Strasbourg, and was a renowned illustrator who was doing lithographs at the age of thirteen.

The fact that Dore was a near contemporary of Coleridge is important because we can be assured that the characters' costumes in his illustrations reflect the actual dress of the time Coleridge was describing. The ships also are correctly drawn and beautifully detailed.

To say that his illustrations complement this classic epic poem is an understatement.

As to the poet, some wag said once of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, that "a half-great poet had a wholly great day." I have also heard that Coleridge is supposed to have written his epic in one sitting, in a great burst of inspiration. I can't vouch for that, but it is truly a masterpiece--of that there can be no doubt.

I recall trying to memorize it when I was in high school, about sixty years ago. I loved it then, and I still do now.

For the price, this book is an absolute steal. No library is complete without this poem, and of all the renditions I've seen of it, this is by far the most beautiful.

Gustave Dore's Engravings offer Mesmerizing Images

I read and memorized portions of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner as a school boy. I thoroughly enjoyed my first reading and I still like it today. I only wish I had encountered these Dore illustrations years ago.
This oversized edition by Dover Publications reproduces all 42 Dore engravings in their original size. Gustave Dore's illustrations are absolutely mesmerizing. I enjoy slowly turning the pages and examining the phenomenal detail in these famous Dore engravings.
Every aspect of this edition is great. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is an imaginative, haunting, and captivating narrative poem that has no parallel in the English language. The engravings by Gustave Dore - the open and endless sea, the vast icy reaches of Antarctica, the calm tropical sea with monsters swirling about, and the dead seamen sprawled on the ship's deck all translate the evocative words of Coleridge into unforgettable images. And the introduction by Millicent Rose is excellent.

This review is just to point out that this edition is basically the same as the The Dover Edition with the following exceptions:

1. This edition is hardcover.
2. The Dore engravings are very slightly reduced in size in this edition.
3. This edition's introduction focuses mostly on Coleridge and the Dover edition's is all about Dore.
4. This edition has a few additional selections of Coleridge poetry at the end. These are nice and have engravings by a different artist.

I bought this version just so I would have a hardcover copy but appreciate the additional material.

Fantasy, Reality, Paranormal?

I chose to read The Vagabond because it was set in Ecuador and Costa Rica, the jewel of Central America. When I got to the Amazon site, it was priced $0.00. I gladly would have paid $2.99, but whatever. Right away, I noticed something funny going on; it seemed like a straight-forward narrative and then it didn't. An agenda filled the pages, some sort of philosophy of transience, death being a transfer. I thought OK, anything's possible, why not? From Rafael in a tobacco growing region in Ecuador (tobacco plays a big part in this novel) we switch characters and follow Leonardo, a backpacking traveler in Costa Rica (with access, whenever he seems to need it, to an ATM). Then we go to Panama, the San Blas Islands, Columbia, Ecuador, and back to Costa Rica. Prophecies and oracles link the action; we're in a dream world. Or are we? The central philosophy is ongoing; it seemed profound and at the same time silly. Things happen; and the resolution drops out of the sky. Throughout, I found myself reading enthusiastically. Why? Because it was different. You can tell the author was sincere and that sincerity won the day. So if you want a story and a way of looking at life that is off the beaten path, then this book is for you.

A MUST READ for EVERYONE

Karakai has written a deeply thought provoking, beautiful, poetic and raw story about humans as spiritual beings living in a human world; a human world that has come to place restrictions on our divine selves, suffocating our souls, spirits and transcendent energies. VAGABOND explores perennial themes of the ages: happiness, following the heart, and destiny.

What should be a compulsory read for all, VAGABOND is something you will want to shout out loud and share with the world. Not only is the story a magical and engaging journey of the characters, VAGABOND has the qualities of a book that transcends time, generations, races, religions - it speaks to a place beyond the mind and heart: the soul, if you will.

VAGABOND's undercurrent theme of courage to live life commands the reader to be still, quiet, and to listen to that voice inside all of us that we so often shut out and disconnect from, and to listen for its answer to our questions about what we want in life and what makes us most happy. VAGABOND offers that those with the courage to listen to, trust, and most importantly - act upon this inner drive and energy for life is what may separate greatness, peace, contentment and the purest happiness in life. VAGABOND may well be the vessel to propel anyone who reads it to live a life of their own greatness - not merely existing or living as we think we should and have been educated to live, but to live powerfully.

The only bad thing about Karakai's book is that it had to end. You will not want to put this one down!

Captures the Traveler in All of Us!

I was provided with a reader's copy of this book.

Rafael is an old soul. It isn't a term he's given himself--rather, a title that fellow villagers and travelers have bestowed upon the young man. His wisdom exceeds the parameters of someone of his younger age and lesser experience. Yet, the tobacco farmer seems to have an ability to guide others in the matters of heart and life. He realizes early on that his life has a greater meaning--that producing tobacco and rolling handmade cigarettes is beneath his calling. But sometimes, duty leads us to forgo those more liberal ideas involving helping mankind with little to no recognition or compensation. When Rafael fails to heed the call, he discovers that his gift, much like the tobacco that grows abundantly in his village, is a part of a greater plan by a greater force.

Leonardo maintains a lifestyle similar to most young men of his age. He drinks, parties, and sexes all with no contributions to society. He recognizes this, and decides to venture to Costa Rica for more than adventure. He wants to discover a greater purpose in life. Along the way, Leo meets other expats who have thrown away their previous lives to find a more meaningful path. After a friend reads his palm, the neo-cosmopolitan is convinced to go south, and embark on a journey that brings him to Rafael's prosperous village in Ecuador. There, he makes discoveries that affect not only him, but those most precious to him. The two men become connected in a way that is saddening, yet inspiring.

Vagabond spoke to me in a way that was honest and eerie. I've styled myself as a cosmopolitan thanks to my international travels in my military career. During that time, I gained more responsibility with promotions and parenthood, decreasing my ability to romp around the World freely. Regardless of life's changes, I've never given up the nomad in me that maintains this desire to live happier and simpler abroad. How did this novel know exactly how I felt?

This story was very profound in that it addresses many emotions that I feel towards modern ideas of success. Mostly, I relate to Rafael, who became torn between sharing his gift of wisdom, and providing for his family. He chose the latter. Most would agree that was the right decision, but this calls into question the idea that if you're bestowed a certain gift from God (or some other higher power), He will provide for all your needs while you use His gift. Tell that to a 10 year old who is sprouting at an exponential rate, loves snacks, and already has a Christmas list written for this year. So, I think this story plants the seeds for finding the right path while recognizing there might be compromises.

I want to live in Central America. In the meantime, I'm putting off my ex-pat trek to Costa Rica until my man cub graduates from high school. And, I'm attempting to make gallo pinto with lizano salsa to familiarize myself with local cuisine (and eat delicious food, because why wait for that). When the time comes, I, too, will become a vagabond. If you've ever questioned your purpose in life, read this novel. It is beautifully poetic--rich in philosophy, thought, and culture.

A serious sci-fo novel with a terrific sense of humor

Bill Parker's latest science fiction novel, Five Moons, brings you into the fold of the story through it's well developed characters. A serious sci-fo novel with a terrific sense of humor. The main character, Dallas Blake, reminds me so much of my own father, always hungry and love of eating. A real joy to read. I am looking forward to the next book in the series and would highly recommend this book.

Awesome sci-fi! Great read. Couldn't put it down. Lmao. Very funny. This book is a fun read. Loved the characters, especially Mariah. Lots of action. I like that the story moves right along. No long meaningless descriptions. Heart pounding ending! Book 1? When is book 2? Can hardly wait!

Buckle up folks...

This is my first foray into reviewing a serial novel, but it is not the first time I've read one. Back in the day, I read Stephen King's serialized THE GREEN MILE, and I had a hard time waiting for each new installment. When it comes to reading a story, I have been known to wait for an entire series to be published before reading book one. After which, I proceed as if I am reading one very long book... case in point, John Jakes (ancient - 1975) Kent Family Chronicles (the series that started with THE BASTARD). Yes, you may surmise from this that I like my fiction long, and detailed, and hard to put down, and after more than a thousand pages, I still want more.

I also make it a practice to not retell the story of what I have just read. I would much rather tantalize than summarize. After all, it's a review, not a book report.

So, I've literally read the first 42 pages of a thriller, and now it's time to review it.

CUTLASS SUPREME is a book about bad guys, several of whom are introduced in Episode 1. Each is a distinct personality, and as a reader of thrillers, I hope to get to know them all better. There is just enough mayhem, and criminal stupidity to make me want to read more. When I came across the post by Phillippe Diederich, on Goodreads, in the Creative Reviews group, his description of his book put me in mind of an old movie, "Gumball Rally," a movie that I really enjoyed. So buckle up folks, and hop in the CUTLASS SUPREME for
"a cross-country chase among a group of criminals after one of them steals a vintage car." Diederich promises five more episodes in season one.

Me? I never could resist the call of the open road.
