An Old Fashioned Girl is a novel by Louisa May Alcott.It was first serialised in the Merry's Museum magazine between July and August in 1869 and consisted of only six chapters. For the finished product, however, Alcott continued the story from the chapter "Six Years Afterwards" and so it ended up with nineteen chapters in all. The book revolves around Polly Milton, the old-fashioned girl who titles the story. Polly visits her wealthy friend Fanny Shaw in the city and is overwhelmed by the fashionable and urban life they live––but also left out because of her "countrified" manners and outdated clothes.

This book was the safe refuge of my teens

An Old Fashioned girl may not be Alcott's strongest book, but it resonated with me and gave me hope in my teens. It may be preachy, but I was part of the choir - from a religious family that forbid worldly things like dancing and makeup. When sent home from school in the 50's because the teacher thought I was sick because I was so pale, I would retreat to my favorite book and live through feeling different with Polly. My grandchildren would understand me better if they read this book. In my later teens, I discovered Anne of Green Gables and had two places to go when I was feeling alone.

A good role model but a little old-fashioned

I remember reading this book as a young girl and being enthralled by it. Reading it as an adult is another matter. A little too preachy and at times hard to believe. Did fourteen year old girls in Alcott's time really spend time alone without a chaperone and "go out" with them to plays and operas? I find that a bit of a stretch. Still, she usually wrote from real life experience, so I suppose it is possible. And Polly still is an appealing heroine, with her sweet and feisty nature, and the determination to do the "right" thing even when it makes her unpopular and seem old-fashioned. A good role model for today's teens, just not sure they will necessarily find her relevant.

love story.

this is one of favorites!!!!!! I love this story of a 14 year old country girl who goes to visit her city friend. Polly is shocked and a little scared as she learns that her simple sweet ways are out of fashion. As she learns to appreciate her simple ways and simple home she does not notice how much she is doing for the family and friends she meets. About half way through the book its skips to 6 years ahead as we find Polly coming back to the city to teach music lessons. Polly is faced with problems along the way and after finding that one of her friends is falling in love with her Polly is forcesed to let him know she does not love him as much as someone else or marry for money. a wonderful book.

some you love and some you love to hate

This is part 2 of a historical fiction trilogy set in Hong Kong in the 1960s. The characters are vivid and intriguing, some you love and some you love to hate. I have a feeling that unexpected ties between certain players will be revealed in the next volume. The story line is complex, yet it flows easily and weaves together all of the various elements into a suspenseful plot. Now we just have to wait for part 3 to find out what happens next. I have some predictions, but only the author knows for sure!

The Adventures of Robin Hood of Great Renown in Nottinghamshire is an 1883 novel by the American illustrator and writer Howard Pyle. Consisting of a series of episodes in the story of the English outlaw Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men, the novel compiles traditional material into a coherent narrative in a colorful, invented "old English" idiom that preserves some flavor of the ballads, and adapts it for children. The novel is notable for taking the subject of Robin Hood, which had been increasingly popular through the 19th century, in a new direction that influenced later writers, artists, and filmmakers through the next century.

About the Author
Howard Pyle (1853-1911) was an American illustrator and writer, primarily of books for young audiences. A native of Wilmington, Delaware, he spent the last year of his life in Florence, Italy. In 1894 he began teaching illustration at the Drexel Institute of Art, Science and Industry (now Drexel University), and after 1900 he founded his own school of art and illustration called the Howard Pyle School of Illustration Art. The term the Brandywine School was later applied to the illustration artists and Wyeth family artists of the Brandywine region by Pitz (later called the Brandywine School). Some of his more famous students were Olive Rush, N. C. Wyeth, Frank Schoonover, Elenore Abbott, Ellen Bernard Thompson Pyle, Allen Tupper True, and Jessie Willcox Smith. His 1883 classic The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood remains in print to this day, and his other books, frequently with medieval European settings, include a four-volume set on King Arthur that cemented his reputation. He wrote an original work, Otto of the Silver Hand, in 1888. He also illustrated historical and adventure stories for periodicals such as Harper's Weekly and St. Nicholas Magazine. His Men of Iron was made into a movie in 1954, The Black Shield of Falworth. Pyle travelled to Florence, Italy to study mural painting in 1910, and died there in 1911 of sudden kidney infection (Bright's Disease).

The Adventures of Robin Hood

I chose to read The Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle for three reasons: 1) because I like to read adventure stories; 2) because my brother recommended it to me; and 3) because I read the back of the book and it sounded like a good story. I thought it would be about outlaws taking from the rich and giving to the poor. I also liked the movie very much and so I assumed I would like the book too.

When I read the book, I liked the adventures in the woods and the way Robin Hood and his men we so good at archery, fighting with the staff, climbing and hiding in the trees and tricking the Sheriff's men. Each chapter was a new adventure and I had no idea what was going to happen next. In many of the chapters, the adventure was to get more men for Robin's Band of Merry Men or to fight the Sheriff's men. They fought the Sheriff of Nottingham's men because to get money and justice for the poor. The Sheriff was always taking the people's money and land unfairly. Robin Hood fought him to prevent him from taking things from the people.

One of the adventures that I liked the most was when Robin Hood went with his men in disguise to the archery contest held by the Sheriff in Nottingham Town. Robin Hood split the arrow in the center of the target on the final round of shooting. He won the contest but the Sheriff would not give him the prize that was a golden arrow. He wouldn't give it to Robin because Robin said "I will not join your service."

I would rate this book as a four out of five stars because it left out some parts to make it a shorter book. I would rather have read the complete adventure of Robin Hood because they tell the whole story, which is so much better. I still thought it was a great book because the writer put some comedy in the story and he added lots of suspense. I recommend it highly. In the end, I thought the book was better than the movie.

Classic Starts: The Adventures of Robin Hood (Classic Starts Series)

I ordered this because my 4 year old was fascinated by Robin Hood. He heard about Robin Hood and asked who is that? I told him some roughly recalled stories but I wanted to find more info for him. However this book is for much older kids. I realized once I received it and started reading. We will save it until he gets older. It is a lengthy book with some gruesome details about killing. My boy is too young for that kind of information. Maybe a boy of 8 or 9 would enjoy it. It is a bit frightening for us right now. No illustrations. It is well written. I think children can benefit from classics and I applaud this series. I am not sure if the information mentioned what age this would be appropriate for. I just took a chance.

I bought this for a 10 year old and ended up enjoying him reading ME a story for once. It's a sort of Reader's Digest Version for Kids.

All of these "Classic Starts" books introduce kids to some of the all time great stories in an interesting way.

The Kama Sutra (Sanskrit: कामसूत्र About this sound pronunciation (help·info), Kāmasūtra) is an ancient Indian Hindu text widely considered to be the standard work on human sexual behavior in Sanskrit literature written by Vātsyāyana. A portion of the work consists of practical advice on sexual intercourse. It is largely in prose, with many inserted anustubh poetry verses. "Kāma" which is one of the four goals of Hindu life, means desire including sexual desire the latter being the subject of the textbook, and "sūtra" literally means a thread or line that holds things together, and more metaphorically refers to an aphorism (or line, rule, formula), or a collection of such aphorisms in the form of a manual. Contrary to popular perception, especially in the western world, Kama sutra is not exclusively a sex manual; it presents itself as a guide to a virtuous and gracious living that discusses the nature of love, family life and other aspects pertaining to pleasure oriented faculties of human life.

Please note the title

As an earlier review failed to note, this is the translation of Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-90). A noted Victorian literary figure, Burton produced a number of translations for middle eastern works with a very specific sense of them AS literature. This means a fine sense of freedom (i.e. the opposite of a 'literal' or scolarly tradition) among other things, as well as various hesitations in what could and could not be published at the time. At his best, Burton ignored these conventions rather shamelessly; this counts for a great deal of the fun in reading the book or any of his other works.

Customers complaining about the quality of the translation, the "thrift edition" format favored by Dover Books - really a wonderful institution precisely for making such quality texts available at such low cost - or the lack of illustrations shouldn't blame research so much as simply read the title of the edition offered here. Readers (or perhaps 'customers' works better) seeking a nicer edition of the Burton text in particular should look towards The Kama Sutra of Vatsyayana (Modern Library Classics). Otherwise, there is the Illustrated Kama Sutra of the Burton text as well as scholarly, if still friendly editions like the Kamasutra (Oxford World's Classics). As an insightful customer noted in an earlier comment, the original text was not illustrated; the introduction to Oxford World Classic edition discusses this at length. But for $3.50, this makes for a wonderful starting point nevertheless.

My girlfriend and I are very sexual people and are always looking for new ways to spice up the romance. We purchased the Kama Sutra and ever since the sex is better than ever, I have never helped her achieve climax so often. I definitely recommend it.

About the Author
Kyle Stumpp was born in Lakenheath, Suffolk, a small rural village in the east of England. As an imaginative and introverted kid, Kyle feels trapped and scarcely stimulated by the provincial countryside lifestyle, which will soon bring him to start dreaming about moving to a bigger and better place. While planning his future and discovering his passion for art (particularly films), Kyle is struck by a series of unfortunate events which lead to him being diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety: he eventually resorts to staying indoors, hiding away from a world that he finds at this point overwhelming. Despite his personal struggle with the omnipresent depression, as years pass Kyle discovers that writing can distract him from his inner suffering, this is how a character named Envy finally comes into being. Envy is a shadow who lives within a darkened world of Shadow People, and shares many characteristics of the writer's own person. After a five year struggle, many times almost giving up, Kyle manages to complete his first book and writes a satisfying 'The End' to his long time project. Although he still suffers from depression and anxiety, he copes much better at the moment and is happy to talk about his illness as he believes strongly it is something that no one should hide.

Well-written, engaging story

This book has all the elements that make a great story. Fantastic world building, believable and lovable characters, and plenty of action.
Hubert and Dot are an old couple raising a baby shadow that is believed to be cursed. They didn't ask for this job but it fell to them to keep the baby, who they name Envy, safe from the evil Shadow Council. I fell in love with Hubert and Dot. They playfully banter back and forth which lightens up the story and are realistic in their flaws.
I am disappointed with the ending of the book, but I will not give away any spoilers. If it weren't for the ending, I would absolutely have loved this book. It's still a great story and after a few days, I am able to look past the ending and view the book in a favorable light.
I recommend this book for young adults and adults alike who enjoy original fantasy novels.

These two novellas don't stand alone, so if you haven't read the rest of the Administration, you won't appreciate them. For those of us who have been waiting for more from Manna Francis, it's a very nice treat.

Highly recommend

This is a review for the entire series thus far (8 books), since I somehow devoured them all in less than a week.

Without giving too much away, Francis takes the classic "violently possessive alpha male" cliche and turns it on its head: for one thing, it's a male/male couple. For another, it's all very well thought out--and unexcused, both by the narrative and the other characters. The character development is a slow, slow burn, just like the relationship. It kept me reading long into the night and on breaks at my desk and crammed into an elevator with a dozen other working professionals. They're just that good.

I will say that the first seven books are my favorites. I enjoyed this one, but it lacked the tension of the others. There's an excellent reason for it, however.

Good story, with a little editing it could be great

While I do like the premise of this story I was really torn on my review of it. Don't get me wrong, there is a lot of potential, but the writing sometimes seemed rough, broken, and at times repetitive. Other times it was beautifully descriptive and drew you into the story. I think with a good editor this book could really shine. I did notice on the Authors page that there is a Spanish version of this story so I wonder if it's just a translation issue. If you can get past the broken sentences, and the fact that the main character in the story gets referred as either his first or last name within the story, and even within the same sentence, then you could really enjoy the story. I loved when the author would describe the world.The beautiful untouched valley within the mountains was definitely my favorite. Especially further past the boulder. The story progression was just right. Feeding just the right amount of information, building suspense and keeping you interested in what will happen next. I do like the story, and with a little but of editing, I think we could have a solid one.

About the Author
DR. DAVID C. EDMONDS is a former Marine, Peace Corps Volunteer, academic dean and Senior Fulbright Professor of Economics with long experience in Latin America. He grew up in south Mississippi and Louisiana and studied at L.S.U., Notre Dame, Georgetown and American University in Washington, DC. He has authored, co-authored, edited or ghostwritten eight published books and numerous academic articles. His first book, Yankee Autumn in Acadiana, won the literary award of the Louisiana Library Association. His last book, Lily of Peru, is the recipient of an International Latino Book Award for fiction. the Royal Palm Literary Award of the Florida Writers' Association and the Silver Award of Readers Favorites. Lily of Peru is also won a Latino-Books-Into-Movies Award of Latino Literacy Now. His current book, The Girl in the Glyphs, is also the recipient of a Royal Palm Literary Award of the Florida Writers Association.

MARIA NIEVES EDMONDS was born in Puerto Rico and holds an MS in psychology from Florida State University. She studied at the University of Puerto Rico, University of South Florida, Florida International University, and Florida Atlantic University. She served as Assistant Provost for International Students at St. Petersburg College (SPC) and the Associate Provost at SPC/Tarpon Springs. She is currently the chair for the Hispanic Leadership Council of Pinellas County, Florida, and is a governor-appointed member of the Juvenile Welfare Board.

This book is a very good read.
I enjoy reading interesting things on my kindle and I found Edmonds' first book interesting - so I tried again!
As I sipped my coffee and read my copy I wanted to make fun of that fact that our heroine, the lovely Jennifer, has an awful lot of time for men while she is busy being such a badass and why is that? When! It hit me that all the badasses in all the books have time for such romantic shenanigans. Therefor... this is perfectly believable.
Once again Edmonds' writing has me traveling to places I've never been and feeling as if I am really there, a true task for a writer that he (I can now say) "always nails".

This book is fast paced enough to read while on a treadmill, but I recommend you read it while laying about, sipping something tasty.

Two in a row from David Edmonds!

Hurray! David Edmonds has a new book out!
About a year ago I dropped a few bucks on unknown author (to me, anyway) David Edmonds, based on a short plot description I found on Amazon. Then I was in for few long nights, up to my neck in turmoil, conflict and fisticuffs as I tried to figure out how hero Markus was going to get out of the jungles of Peru, win the girl, and heal the dozen knife and bullet wounds he sustained along the way. Just as we (Markus and I) were finally recovering from the rollicking thrill ride Edmonds titled “Lily of Peru,” I find out he has ANOTHER adventure, featuring a woman in the lead role. Damsel in distress, Jennifer McMullen Cruz, just twenty four years old, has gotten herself in more trouble, in deeper doo doo, and with fewer AK-47s to battle her way out, than Markus!
The plot is complicated, mysterious and packed with unexpected twists, mystery, betrayal, ghosts, caves, pirates, and, uh…well I could tell you the plot, but then I’d have to kill you. It would also be good if you read it with the assistance of a travel agent, as poor Jennifer has to log a lot of miles in an assortment of countries, as she searches for proof of ancient aliens, mysterious cave drawings, buried treasure and, of course, true love. But wait! There’s MORE! She has to do all that while simultaneously fleeing murderous tomb looters, armed bandits, a cheating husband, and ghosts. Along the way she gets to dance naked in front of a fire, find fame as a successful explorer, disguise herself (very successfully), as a hooker, and find out what it feels like to kill in self-defense. Pretty good, I’d bet.
And just when all seems lost, Edmonds takes his final swing at the reader, and…Well, I could tell you what happens, but…

I've read two books by David and Maria Edmonds (the other one was Lily of Peru) - both books are so enthralling. They put the TURN in "page turner." Seriously, if you can put these books down, you are stronger than I am.

The characters are so real they nearly pop up from the pages and ask you what's for dinner. The imagery, scene descriptions, settings are as clear as high density television. The villains are the best brand - well defined sleazeballs who you love to hate; Karma comes to visit in the most delicious ways. The plot is unpredictable, yet moves toward an authentic, exciting conclusion. You don't really read this book so much as experience it.

One thing I especially enjoyed was the imperfection of the lead characters. They were flawed, and their flaws gave them a rich hue of humanity. This texture is enchanting and beguiling. One could easily imagine this story on screen.

I am an editor and prolific reader. The quality of The Girl in the Glyphs ranks it easily in the top 5% of all books I have read in the last twenty years. Some books of fiction are read once and tossed aside. Others are nuanced and so rich that they conjure new magic with each additional reading. The Girl in the Glyphs is such a novel.

Loved it!

First of all let me just say the author had me loving some characters and hating the others. Ladonna and Souley were meant for each other. She was too trifling for my taste. I felt bad for Kassidy before the book even got to lift off with the rest of this craziness. Kassidy just kept getting the short end of the stick in this game called love.

Strays of Rio is an action packed thriller in which homeless children are targets of a private death squad, and their protector is at risk from an unknown stalker.

Scarred by her own abusive childhood, bookstore owner Lisa Kerry shelters a group of homeless children in fashionable Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, from the private death squad hunting them down. Acting on her vow to protect the street urchins and rid the city of the killers, Lisa is drawn into the terrifying world of drug lords and corrupt officialdom, and she takes us with her.

Lisa is a tortured young woman who resembles Lisbet Salandar, but with a softer side. She finds her purpose in life, but the purpose could destroy her body and soul at the very moment she is discovering love for the first time, awakened in her by a handsome, persistent American. Her determination to avenge the street kids threatens to compromise her integrity and her chance for happiness.

As we ride through the streets of Rio, frozen in fear with Lisa, the author, Edith Parzefall, makes us question our own values. If you've never visited Rio de Janeiro, just open the pages of Edith Parzefall's novel, Strays of Rio. She transports you there and immediately you become part of the exotic scene. From the police on the beaches to the capuchin monkeys in the bars, to the affluent houses within view of the hillside favelas (shanty towns), the setting absorbs you. Drug lords rule the favelas, but these impoverished communities are so dangerous one drug lord insists his young brother must live on the street in a gang with other urchins, for his own safety. The characters have real personalities, real concerns and real agendas and the grubby little thieves have a way of getting under your skin. That's what endeared the street kids to me.

Strays of Rio is a most worthwhile book, timely and topical, especially since the city is being cleaned up in time for the Olympics of 2016. This story needs to be heard if street children everywhere are to be valued, protected and cared for. I highly recommend it.

A heart-stopping adventurous glide over Rio.

What a great story. I think a man would enjoy this just as much as a woman. The down-to-earth writing style of this novel makes reading a pleasure. No stopping to work out what something means--just let the story whisk you away to Rio de Janeiro.

More or less at peace with her life, Lisa Kerry runs a bookshop. When a group of street kids slip into an old workshop at the back of her bookstore, their plight forces her to take a fresh look. Locals don't want the strays around their properties and killers take pot-shots at them for sport. Amongst the tourists, a rugged American wanders into the shop. She agrees to guide Tony around the city and takes him to the top of Sugar Loaf for a spectacular view.

Memories of past abuse rise to haunt her while she battles her attraction to Tony. When the corrupt police show no interest in preventing the death of the street kids, Lisa takes up arms to protect the youngsters. She faces a choice: stop the killers at gun point or let the annoyingly determined American heal her troubled mind.

This adventure carried me through the beauty and degradation of Rio de Janeiro in a wild ride akin to Lisa's jump off the cliff with Tony to paraglide in the uplift beneath the stretched arms of the Christo Redentor statue.
The ending is fantastic. My chest is still tight from tension.

An Author to Watch. Strays of Rio is Exceptional

Strays of Rio is one of the best written suspense novels I've picked up in a long time. It flows seamlessly, the pace is excellent and I can't get the characters out of my head. The realism is frightening, the love shown for others as wonderful as the horror of those who kill and torture so easily is gut wrenchingly factual.
The author throws wide open the curtain to show the darkest parts of humanity without a single misstep into lecture or spelling out things the reader gets by the tight dialogue and heart pounding action. Every line, every word pushes the plot forward so the reader follows along while flipping pages frantically to see what happens.
The evil side of those who prey on children forced to live on their own, in poverty and neglect in such a corrupt society, is shown with such realistic setting you can't help but hate this world, but then the good shines through taking the story to the level of an unforgettable romance that has a genuine heroine who gets the job done the best she can without hesitation, making Lisa stand out as a character I find tops the list of one of the best female characters I've read.
