Noam Chomsky argues that communication with aliens would be impossible. Stephen Hawking argues that it would be extremely unwise even to try. What if it were absolutely necessary to do so? This question arises with extreme urgency at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863, in this time-travel, alternate-history trilogy, A New Birth of Freedom.

Intriguing alternate history
By Jenna N.
A New Birth of Freedom: The Translator, by Robert G. Pielke is the second installment in an intriguing alternate history trilogy. Edwin Blair has been sent back to the American Civil War to arrange for the eradication of otherworldly invaders from his own 23rd century time. This installment deals with the ramifications of meddling with history, both personal and historical. How much can Edwin safely alter history? What changes can he make that will endure, and what alterations will be erased once he returns to his proper time?

As the novel progresses, Edwin discovers his memory is failing as he affects his changes. The history he once thoroughly knew (it was his specialty as a university professor) has been altered and his mind is having a hard, often physically painful, time sorting it all out. Plagued by frequent headaches, nightmares and mind fog, Edwin must figure out exactly what he needs to do in order to succeed in his mission. He knows there is a limit to how much he can change history.

I enjoyed the immense historical detail in A New Birth of Freedom: The Translator. There is quite a bit of knowledge pertaining to the Civil War that was new to me. I found myself researching the characters, as well as some of the language that was used. Edwin introduces John Hay to a few colloquialisms that gained popularity during the time of the War - a detail that I found refreshing. I also found the relationships between our intrepid time-traveler and his historical friends rather compelling. His friendship with Mr. Hay is crucial to the success of his mission. Without his help, he will likely forget everything from his own time - including his goal.

One aspect of the book that slowed things down a bit for me is that the author spends quite a bit of time trying to explain the multitude of paradoxes that are innate to time-travel. He goes over them several times, trying to get the point across with many analogies. At times it slows the story down.

I highly recommend this series, and particularly this installment. If you are a fan of speculative or alternate histories I think you will find Mr. Pielke's take very captivating. I eagerly await the third installment.

This Book Rips A Good One
By Lynette355
Dear Hubby ripped A New Birth of Freedom: The Translator by Robert G. Pielke' from my hands as soon as it arrived in the mail. No matter how much I scowled at him, the book was not returned to me til this last week. He was ever so gracious to let me finally have my book from Robert G. Pielke. It was about dang time too!

You may remember I raved about Robert's first book, A New Birth of Freedom: The Visitor (Book 1) here before. He has a great way of mish mash a story of history, time jumping and sci-fi that I had not come across til then. Ever since we have been all excited for the new release of A New Birth of Freedom: The Translator. Sure enough we were not let down.

Now if you are new to this line of books I would suggest reading book one first. For it does set up the story line for book two. Now on to A New Birth of Freedom: The Translator (Book 2). We are back in the days of Lincoln and the war between the states along with the Pests being locked up or trapped within their crafts. Here we are now understanding the problems in time jumping. Just not that easy to go back to fix a problem without messing up your own mortality. Not a desired effect. Then you have to learn a communal language between you and the pest. I love the straight forward logic they have. Makes me sorta feel right at home. But I really do wonder how is it that the men of the past are wrapping their heads around extraterrestrial beings are right there in front of them. And really who are the Pest? Us or them? You might want to look into this one yourself. We give it a four thumbs up (Dear Hubby and I).

good sequel
By ace717
A New Birth of Freedom: The Translator, by Robert G. Pielke is the sequel to A New Birth of Freedom: The Visitor. The first book is an amazing sci-fi twist on an alternate history surrounding the American Civil War period. At the end of the first book we are left anxiously awaiting if the alien eggs will hatch, and confused on whether the captive aliens are good or evil (as originally presented). In the second book so much of history has been altered, even if it was by the smallest amount, that the main character Edwin is becoming extremely confused to the point of migraines. This series is a wonderful compilation of time travel, the butterfly-effect/time alteration (it reminded me a lot of back to the future when it was explained that seeing yourself and making changes can have indescribable ramifications). Throughout the book Edwin is battling himself and his memory loss to stay on track of his original (now fuzzy) mission.
In the first book I loved the introduction of all the historical characters (which I admit I really knew very little about before this) and very much enjoyed following them throughout the second book. Pielke did a wonderful job of character development and was consistent in The Translator. I don't believe you should read these books alone or out of order because it is critical that you understand what parts characters played in the beginning (when Edwin's memory is clear) such as Mr. Hay.
The characters are all very believable and I loved the complexity of this book (and series so far). It is unique to have two major conflicts occurring at the same time throughout the book; the progression of the civil war and the ramifications of the alien visitors/invaders.
I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys history, sci-fi, and/or time travel. While I was excited about concluding this series with the second book, I am extremely happy it is a trilogy and the adventure didn't end here.

One of the Greatest Book Forgotten and Misunderstood
By T.NAKAJIMA
The front cover of the book might lead you to misunderstanding that "Four Feathers" is a book about war; actually, though it deals with the war in the Sudan in late 19th century, the book consists of superb descriptions of complicated psychology found in the hero, the heroine and their mutual friend. "Four Feathers" as a whole is not a book like "She" or "Beau Geste," but it is rather a special kind of romance which could be found only in this era.
To disprove his disgrace, the hero Harry Feversham, who quit his regiment just before being sent to the Sudan, decides to go to Africa, disguising himself as a Greek, and firmly is determined to give back three white feathers sent to him as a symbol of his being a coward. One clever touch is given here; his fiancee also added one feather to them, and rejected him in the face before their marriage. Now you think Harry must prove that he does not deserve such an act. And probably, you expect the book to draw you into the world full of adventure. No, you're wrong.
There are certainly descriptions of adventure under the sizzling sun of Africa, but you must wait. Before they come, we are introduced to the complex relationship between Harry and other characters that are involved in his action. Various feelings of love, regret, courage, and suspicion, all caused as aftermath of the crucial action of sending white feathers, follow with a surprisingly and deeply psychological insight. Though the story is, as you expect, very melodramatic and sentimental, the characters are well-drawn and convincing, and if not as insightful as Henry James, surely deserves much serious attention.
The adventure scenes come in the last third of the book, but the suspense is a little diminished due to the rather hasty ending of the book. (If you want to read a book full of adventure in Africa, I recommend P. C. Wren's "Beau Geste," which I found a gripping tale, too.) Still, the descriptions of the House of Stone, concentration camp of POW, (where the author himself visited after the war ended) are still realistic and shocking, and will haunt your mind after reading, and as an adeventure story too, you won't be disappointed. In short, "Four Feathers" is one of the greatest forgotten bestsellers in the English literature.

The Real Four Feathers - Different Than the Movie Versions
By Roger Kennedy
This book is full of noble ideas and notions of Victorian honor in the days of the British Empire. Those who come to this book after seeing the 1939 Korda classic, or even the more stark 1979 re-make might be in for a suprise. Even as this review is written yet another cineamtic foray is being planned with a Fall 2002 re-re-make. No doubt 21st century notions of Political Correctness shall be heavy handed on this 19th Century classic.
Still, I think readers will be in for a bit of a disappointment here. Not for the book itself which is a sublime piece of writing, a work typical ot the pathos of the time, but because of the lack of action contained therein. This is a pyschological and emotional work. The main charcters have many inner feelings to deal with. The plot moves slowly at times, building to a gradual crescendo typical of Victorian novels of the day before it resolves itself in rapid sequences.
The film versions convey the general impression of the book, but there are not big clamatic battles of Omdurman or prison breaks which made the Korda movie such a rousing epic. Here Harry Faversham is very much on his own to resolve his fears and inner emotions, as are his friends. Its good to see a book like this revived, but readers who come to it from the movie theater or video are apt to be suprised at what they find here. Lets hope the find the suprise a pleasant and interesting one. I know I did.

Wonderful read
By Jenonthetrain
I read this book in anticipation of the Sept. 2002 Shekar Kapur movie of the same title.
I found The Four Feathers to be an engrossing character examination, with a bit of action as the background. The romance at the center was a bonus, as was the detailed glimpse of life in Britain at that time, the expectations that men and women held for one another and themselves.
I was, however, disappointed by the inaccuracy in the synopsis on the book's back cover and repeated on this website which states that Harry Faversham saves the lives of the three men who gave him the white feathers in order to be redemeed.
I'm not sure where the writer of the synopsis came by that idea but it sure doesn't happen like that in the book. Not to spoil the story for you, but Harry proves his bravery in rather more complex ways.
I also was pleasantly surprised that much of the book is told from the perspective of Ethne, Harry's beloved. Her struggle to "do the right thing" is just as compelling as Harry's struggle to make up for the one time he didn't.

AND FROM OUT OF THE PAST.......!
By D. Blankenship
I have recently found myself, for the first time in my life, with excess time on my hands. I also discovered that napping with the dogs, while normally pure delight, can get old after a couple of months. Being a bit of a hoarder I decided to investigate and find just what I have been hoarding all of these years...wow! Boxes and boxes of old SiFi books! I gathered the "nap crew" and we began reading some old, old friends that we had forgotten about.

"The Alien," by Raymond F. Jones was first published in 1951. The book I am reviewing here; the one I have had stashed away, is the 1966 Belmont Productions, Inc. edition and a fine edition it was and is. I must note that in 1966 when I bough this thing it sold for 50 cents but actually cost me 35 cents because I bought it at the PX in Ankara, Turkey. I remember that the .35 cents had a major impact on by budget at the time.

Anyway, Raymond F. Jones was born in 1915 and passed away in Utah in 19994. During his life he published 12 books and at least 76 short stories. The short stories appeared, for the most part, in publications such as Thrilling Wonder Stories, Astounding Stories and Galaxy. These small SiFi monthly or quarterly editions were meat and potatoes for my reading program when I was a kid. Jones published his last novel, "Syn" in 1969. Most of his productive writing was done in the very late 1940s then he hit his peak during the 1950s and went on into the early 1960s. He was a very competent SiFi writer and was one of the pioneers in the field.

"The Alien" is of course a futuristic novel - a "space soap." if you will. About 500,000 years ago there lived on Mars, a race so superior and so much more intelligent than ours that we did not hold a candle to it. (I should be noted that in my opinion, that is not that great a leap and really not all that much to brag about as far as old Martians go). Anyway, this advanced and superior race who knew all the secrets of the universe; of life and death and immortality, chose to have one man come back to life precisely 500,000 years after his death. Oh my! This is the story of the affect the appearance of this man had upon the Galaxy World...it set planet against planet, ideology against ideology and man against man and indeed - life against death.

The Galaxy has been warned as another ancient civilization light years from earth left a cube inscribed:

"Destroy the contents of the protoplasm chamber without mercy. Demarsule is there and he will be the scourge of any civilization in which he arises. HE dreams of conquests and he will not rest until he is master of the Universe. He has destroyed galaxies; he will destroy others if he lives again. Kill him!"

Will mankind listen to this dire warning? Would we listen today? Will the earth and galaxy and mankind be saved?

Sorry...no spoilers here!

This work is quite well written, in particular when you consider it is the author's first published novel. The story moves at a good clip. It is very, very typical 1950s space opera; something I dearly love. Of course when reading this work you MUST remember when it was written and what sort of scientific and social knowledge the author had access to.

This is one you need to add to your list especially if you are interested in the history of the SiFi genre.

I demand a Libby Logan comic book/graphic novel. A super heroine for the 21st century!
By Jodie
This super heroine makes Batgirl and Wonder Woman look dated. Aussiegirl is a great role model for young girls, proving that you can still have morals and values while living with extraordinary powers. Cannot wait to see what happens when Libby and Lance Boyle meet up and how their methods of power and responsibility will clash. As a woman and super hero fan, I found this selection a highly entertaining page turner. Although, I did hope that Dimitrov would have a bigger role, I like what became of the villain in the end. Keep watching the skies. You never know when you might wake up with powers you only dreamed possible.

This is different from the first Empowered but dare I say better because with great power comes a more responsible super hero or rather heroine! For those of you unaware and not seeking spoilers I'll say this... The book kicks ass, the characters are fleshed out and in the resuegance of super heroes in media this is a he'll of a fresh take and an amazing piece of fiction. If you haven't decided to buy it before this definitely do so now! I mean right ... STOP READING ANF GIVE HIM ALL YOUR MONEY!! you won't regret it!

fun, but one-dimensional
By Amazon Customer
This is supposed to be a spin off of another series, I have not read. But overall it is an enjoyable and fun read.
our mc, has a somewhat conflicting development, on the one hand she is extremely level headed, and yet on the other
still does obvious impulsive moves that really go against the grain, the villain of the story was rather flat.
It's readable and enjoyable but it could have oodles more development and a more complex world building
and a less incidental plot.

  • The Swiss Family Robinson (German: Der Schweizerische Robinson) is a novel by Johann David Wyss, first published in 1812, about a Swiss family shipwrecked in the East Indies en route to Port Jackson, Australia.Written by Swiss pastor Johann David Wyss and edited by his son Johann Rudolf Wyss and illustrated by his son Johann Emmanuel Wyss, the novel was intended to teach his four sons about family values, good husbandry, the uses of the natural world and self-reliance. Wyss' attitude toward education is in line with the teachings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau, and many of the episodes have to do with Christian-oriented moral lessons such as frugality, husbandry, acceptance, cooperation, etc. The adventures are presented as a series of lessons in natural history and the physical sciences, and resemble other, similar educational books for children in this period, such as Charlotte Turner Smith's Rural Walks: in Dialogues intended for the use of Young Persons (1795), Rambles Further: A continuation of Rural Walks (1796), A Natural History of Birds, intended chiefly for young persons (1807). But the novel differs in that it is modeled on Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, a genuine adventure story,[1] and presents a geographically impossible array of large mammals (including tigers, brown bears, leopards, jackals, hyenas, cheetahs, wolves, moose, lions, rhinos, hippos, walruses, elephants, giraffes, monkeys, zebras, and onagers). and plants (including the bamboos, cassavas, cinnamon trees, coconut palm trees, fir trees, flax, Myrica cerifera, rice, rubber plant potatoes, sago palms, and an entirely fictitious kind of sugarcane) that probably could never have existed together on a single island for the children's education, nourishment, clothing and convenience.

    From School Library Journal
Grade 3-5-- It goes without saying that, in the process of condensing and rewriting these books down to a fourth-grade reading level, most of the distinguished aspects of the works--writing style, language, atmosphere, characterization--have been sacrificed for a simple, not to say simplistic, master-plots approach that conveys the incidents but fails to impart the justification for their continuing endurance in the canon of juvenile literature. The books are illustrated with some attention paid to the sense of the plots and characters. For those who persist in the fallacy that knowing what the so-called "classics" of children's literature are about is a satisfactory substitution for actually experiencing them by reading the original, this series is acceptable. For the rest of us, it's as if someone's painted a guppy white and called it Moby Dick. --Christine Behrmann, New York Public Library

    Original translation
    By Stephen Balbach
The Swiss Family Robinson was initially written in German by Swiss author Johann Wyss in 1812, and then soon after an accurate English translation was completed by William Godwin in 1816. The Godwin translation remained the standard in English for a generation or two, but by the mid-19th century the number and variety of English translations began to multiply - there were no enforceable copyright laws and translators freely added episodes, changed names (and even genders) of some of the characters and cut portions of the text to conform to changing views on education and aesthetic tastes. There are probably over a dozen such variations and most who read the novel today are not reading the original (the 2007 Penguin Classics edition, edited by John Seelye, is the 1816 Godwin translation, which is the closest to the original). I have now read two: William Kingston's 1879 adaptation (one of the more common adaptations) and Godwin, and I believe the original translation of Wyss by Godwin is better. It's not abridged like most later versions so certain scenes just make more sense - for example some of the characters are more dynamic, like Ernest shows himself to be a capable bloodthirsty killer like his brothers (a scene cut from later editions to maintain his "bookish" nature) - and the theories on education are classic Rousseauian (he is mentioned twice in the narrative).

This isn't your childhood Swiss family. Godwin's 1816 translation has rarely been in print until recently - most versions floating around are some variation of Isabelle de Montolieu's 1824 French adaptation (William H. G. Kingston's 1879 English translation of Montolieu's French adaption is probably the most common). In Montolieu/Kingston's version, the original ~400 page that Wyss wrote has been abridged to about 150 pages, with an additional 150 pages or so of new material added to the end (with an entirely different ending, new characters, etc). So if you've read Swiss family as a child, and are looking for an "unabridged" version, you may find Godwin's 1816 translation missing a lot of material - simply because Wyss never wrote it in the first place.

What version to read? I would say Montolieu/Kingston's version (and others) are more "kid friendly" mainly because the Godwin translation is from 1816 and as such uses some language that is dated and has passages that would probably be boring or not make sense without historical context. So in a way there is no "right" version since most readers for the past 150 years have not been reading the "original" anyway. I would probably recommend the Montolieu/Kingston version for juvenile readers and the Godwin version for adults - or even better, read all of Godwin plus the second half of Montolieu/Kingston which is all new material, the first half just being an abridged version of Godwin.

In the end I enjoyed the novel for what it is - a great adventure and inspiring family story. Many classic stories are challenging and interesting but not always "fun" - this one is just a great story and fun to read. It's even more fun knowing there are is a whole world of alternative versions available, with more adventures and different endings, but I'm glad to have read the original as it was written by Wyss (and his sons).

Check the publisher very carefully before you buy "Swiss Family Robinson."

Check the publisher very carefully before you buy "Swiss Family Robinson." One of the versions available, published by General Books LLC, has reviews associated with completely different imprints of the book from genuine publishers.

Be warned that the contents of the version of Swiss Family Robinson published by General Books LLC is completely unedited garbage. Also be warned that when you do the "Look Inside," you're not looking at the General Books LLC version, you're looking at an image of the book from a genuine publisher that actually edits and checks their work. And the reason is....

General Books LLC puts together books using an OCR automated scanning device which misses complete pages. There are numerous Typos and there's no table of contents. There is ABSOLUTELY NO EDITING of any kind done to the book, and the scanning is done by a robot (which the publishers website says can miss pages).

This is all stated on the publishers web site (google them and read - you'll be as stunned as I was when you get all the details). The Almost every review of books published by General Books LLC (around 500,000 of them from one imprint or another now listed on Amazon) by buyers is negative, many are extremely so.

If you have bought the version from General Books LLC by mistake, you can return to Amazon within 30 days(but check Amazon's Return Policy for the details) .

Personally, I always liked Swiss Family Robinson, my one star review is for the General Books LLC version.

    Incomplete translation / conversion
    By Robert L. Huggins
The story is, of course, a classic! I doubt many would finish reading it in these days given how dated the language and story line feel. My one-star rating is solely due to the fact that this particular version is incomplete. The missing pages have a profound impact on enjoying / gaining a full understanding of the story. I feel the version description should mention the missing text!

    Great to see pulp back
    By JSweet
This is the first book I've picked up from Airship 27 from their series of new pulp adventures. Very nice job on the whole staying true to the pulp spirit.

I'd agree with the previous reviewer that "The Music of Murder" was a swing and a miss. The other three, though, are great additions to the Dan Fowler adventures. I eagerly await volume 2!

    Dan Fowler G-Man
    By Virginia E. Johnson
Production of book is nice, though the spine is slightly off center. Cover art is okay, but might have worked better if the coloring was toned down. The b&w interior art was well done. This is the first new Fowler volume since 1953, and it's good to see the G-Man back in action. There are four stories, each approximately 15,000 words.

"The Dungeon Of Death" by Gregory Bastianelli leads off the volume with a mad scientist (professor of theology), dying of cancer. Worried about life after death, he has two stooges kidnap bums and hobos from the streets. By killing them, but he hopes to find what lies beyond death. The F.B.I. is called into the case when they kill a sailor. No crime solving techniques. Fowler goes under cover to set himself up as a victim, is captured with Larry Kendal and Sally Vane, then subjected to torture. The author tells us about a venomous Madagascar Millipede (he calls an insect), though I've never heard of one. Madagascar Millipedes are poisonous if you eat them. They aren't venomous. Centipedes are venomous, and their bite is nasty. Nor are they insects. Writing is awkward and could have been tightened.

"Harvest of Crime" by B.C. Bell is a gem of a tale involving a manhunt. A bank robbery leads a team of F.B.I. and law enforcement to a farm where the crooks are holed up. The leader escapes after a shoot out, killing an F.B.I. agent, and Dan Fowler is assigned the case with his partner, Larry Kendal. Well written, and entertaining. This is a nice tribute to the original series.

"The Music Of Murder" by Aaron Smith. Uh, let's see, musicians hypnotize an audience with their music, and while they are under mind control, the band robs them. Then a senator is killed by this technique, which brings in the F.B.I. Sally Vane and her cousin - who is deaf - are flown in to help uncover the deeds. Fowler beats the bandleader in the police cell until he divulges information about his boss. Fowler sends Sally and her cousin back to Washington, then he and Larry Kendal head to Chicago to get the boss. He is captured, tempted by a Chinese pleasure girl, then has to fight a big Chinaman, and all the time the mastermind is holding Sally Van and her cousin (when and how did he get them?) on a platform above a shark pool! This is poorly written, and a bad plot.

"The League of Dead Patriots" by Andrew Salmon is a well-written story, but really goes nowhere. Fowler and Kendal are after black marketers with a military connection, which leads to a Japanese Internment Camp in northern California. The Domino Lady and a mysterious man named Joe McGoohan, who appears to be aiding the mastermind, balk them at every turn.

There were some typos throughout the book, but not enough to be distracting. I really wanted to give this book a 4-Star Rating on the strength of the stories; "Harvest of Crime" stood out as the gem, while "The League of Dead Patriots" and "The Dungeon of Death" were interesting, neither worked well. "The Music of Murder" was the stinker of the lot. I felt readers expecting a 4-Star read would be cheated.

  • The Aeneid (/ɨˈniːɪd/; Latin: Aenēis [ae̯ˈneːɪs]) is a Latin epic poem, written by Virgil between 29 and 19 BC, that tells the legendary story of Aeneas, a Trojan who travelled to Italy, where he became the ancestor of the Romans. It comprises 9,896 lines in dactylic hexameter. The first six of the poem's twelve books tell the story of Aeneas's wanderings from Troy to Italy, and the poem's second half tells of the Trojans' ultimately victorious war upon the Latins, under whose name Aeneas and his Trojan followers are destined to be subsumed. The hero Aeneas was already known to Greco-Roman legend and myth, having been a character in the Iliad, composed in the 8th century BC. Virgil took the disconnected tales of Aeneas's wanderings, his vague association with the foundation of Rome and a personage of no fixed characteristics other than a scrupulous pietas, and fashioned this into a compelling founding myth or national epic that at once tied Rome to the legends of Troy, explained the Punic wars, glorified traditional Roman virtues and legitimized the Julio-Claudian dynasty as descendants of the founders, heroes and gods of Rome and Troy.

    Amazon.com Review
Arma virumque cano: "I sing of warfare and a man at war." Long the bane of second-year Latin students thrust into a rhetoric of sweeping, seemingly endless sentences full of difficult verb forms and obscure words, Virgil's Aeneid finds a helpful translator in Robert Fitzgerald, who turns the lines into beautiful, accessible American English. Full of betrayal, heartache, seduction, elation, and violence, the Aeneid is the great founding epic of the Roman empire. Its pages sing of the Roman vision of self, the Roman ideal of what it meant to be a citizen of the world's greatest power. The epic's force carries across the centuries, and remains essential reading.

    From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Princeton scholar Fagles follows up his celebrated Iliad and Odyssey with a new, fast-moving, readable rendition of the national epic of ancient Rome. Virgil's long-renowned narrative follows the Trojan warrior Aeneas as he carries his family from his besieged, fallen home, stops in Carthage for a doomed love affair, visits the underworld and founds in Italy, through difficult combat, the settlements that will become, first the Roman republic, and then the empire Virgil knew. Recent translators (such as Allen Mandelbaum) put Virgil's meters into English blank verse. Fagles chooses to forgo meter entirely, which lets him stay literal when he wishes, and grow eloquent when he wants: "Aeneas flies ahead, spurring his dark ranks on and storming/ over the open fields like a cloudburst wiping out the sun." A substantial preface from the eminent classicist Bernard Knox discusses Virgil's place in history, while Fagles himself appends a postscript and notes. Scholars still debate whether Virgil supported or critiqued the empire's expansion; Aeneas' story might prompt new reflection now, when Americans are already thinking about international conflict and the unexpected costs of war. From The New Yorker
Fagles's new version of Virgil's epic delicately melds the stately rhythms of the original to a contemporary cadence. Having previously produced well-received translations of the Iliad and the Odyssey, he illuminates the poem's Homeric echoes while remaining faithful to Virgil's distinctive voice. Pious Aeneas, passionate Dido, and raging Turnus are driven by the desires and rivalries of the gods-but even the gods recognize their obeisance to fate, and to the foretold Roman Empire that will produce Augustus, Virgil's patron. The excellent introduction, by Bernard Knox, gives historical and literary context, and both Knox and Fagles convincingly argue the epic's continuing relevance. Fagles, writing of Virgil's sense of "the price of empire," notes that "it seems to be a price we keep on paying, in the loss of blood and treasure, time-worn faith and hard-won hope, down to the present day."

    Very readable
    By SkookumPete
There is no such thing as a "best" translation, only translations that suit one's purpose. If you want to read the Aeneid as a gripping story, Fagles's version does very well. I have just finished reading book 4, and Dido's fury, as set against the implacable higher purpose of Aeneas, has perhaps never been as vividly, even scarily, portrayed.

On the other hand, it could be argued that Fagles's verse does not convey the stately or epic quality of the Latin in the way that, for instance, Fitzgerald's does. A short comparison may suffice:

"sed nullis ille mouetur / fletibus aut uoces ullas tractabilis audit; / fata obstant placidasque uiri deus obstruit auris." (Vergil)

"But no tears move Aeneas now. / He is deaf to all appeals. He won't relent. / The Fates bar the way / and heaven blocks his gentle, human ears." (Fagles)

"But no tears moved him, no one's voice would he / Attend to tractably. The fates opposed it; / God's will blocked the man's once kindly ears." (Fitzgerald)

Fitzgerald's version is closer to the Latin (other than not using the present tense), better reflects its formal nature, and achieves a Vergilian metrical effect with the three successive beats of "God's will blocked." But Fagles's free and fluid rendition is undoubtedly more engaging to the modern reader.

Occasionally Fagles does introduce a modern idiom that is trite or jarring. For instance, when the sea-nymph speeds Aeneas's ship on its way in Book 10, she does so skillfully ("haud ignara modi") because she "knows the ropes".

The book has a useful introduction, a few notes, and a pronouncing glossary. Fagles's postscript is, however, a tedious pastiche of quotations from previous critics and could have been omitted.

The "other" side of the Trojan war
    By D. Roberts
Publius Vergilius Maro was commisioned by Caesar Augustus to author a national epic for Rome. The work which Virgil composed for this purpose was the Aeneid. It is an epic poem that tells the story of a minor character from Homer's Iliad who leads a rag-tag band from the smouldering ruins of Troy in order to found a "New Troy" to the west: Rome. It is in the Aeneid, not the Iliad (as most people who have not read the works tend to believe) that we see the spectacle of the Trojan Horse & the famous line "I do not trust Greeks bearing gifts." The Iliad ends with the death of Hektor - before the plan of the Trojan Horse is devised by Odysseus. The Odyssey picks up after the sack of Troy. The Aeneid fills in the gaps & narrates the story of the few Trojans who escape the wrath of the Greeks. According to legend, Romulus & Remes (the two brothers who eventually founded the city itself) were descendents of Aeneas. As is usual, Fitzgerald's translation is top notch. I have read Mandelbaum's rendition as well & much prefer Mr. Fitzgerald. The book also contains a useful glossary & postscript which help elucidate the allusions to Hannibal & Cleopatra which the Romans of Virgil's day would have picked up right away, but which might be unfamiliar to modern day readers. Also, it is HIGHLY recommended that one read the Iliad & the Odyssey before embarking on Virgil's work. [...] But, for a quick answer: the reason that Juno (Hera in the Greek) has a vendetta against Aeneas is due to the fact that he is Trojan. This all derives from the judgment of Paris when Juno was "jilted" by the bribe that Aphrodite offered Paris (also a Trojan). To offer any more info at this point would be too great of a digression, but what I will say is that this work is NOT (I repeat NOT) for someone to merely pick up & dive into w/out doing his or her pre-requisite reading. Do your homework, become familiar with the myths & tales of what has gone on before, then read the Aeneid. You will be glad you did, for this is an extraordinary epic. Also, for those who harbor the ambition, the university of Oxford professor Peter Levi has recently written a wonderful, succinct biography of Virgil. "The Death Of Virgil" by Hermann Broch is a mind-blowing masterpiece as well. Indeed, one can never get enough Virgil.

imagine that he almost burned it
    By M. H. Bayliss
Although Virgil spent years writing the Aeneid, by his death, he felt that it was imperfect and asked that it be burned. Luckily for all concerned, his request was denied or we'd never have this epic. If you are new to Greek and Roman epics, I'd recommend starting with the Iliad and the Odyssey first. Not only will most novices find them more readable (especially the Odyssey), any reader will pick up important background information that will help immeasurably in following the Aeneid. Although I'm a huge fan of the Aeneid and have read many of the books in the original Latin, I'd suggest to most readers just to read books 1,2,4 and 6 unless you are really drawn in. It's not that the other books are not great (they are), it's just that unless you are a specialist, you won't want to read all about the battles and extra stuff -- book 4 is the love story of Dido and Aeneus and for many is the highlight of the poem. Book 6 is the trip to to the underworld which is so important to later writers and poets like Dante, TS Eliot, etc.... The fall of Troy is contained in books 1 and 2. I enjoy Fitzgerald's translation, but as an amateur Latinist, I prefer Allan Mandelbaum's translation with Moser's illustrations. When I was translating from the Latin, only Mandelbaum was so close to the original that he could help a student. I think Mandelbaum is a genius for rendering the poem so close to the original. It's unfair to call him wooden -- Virgil wrote the whole thing in Dacytlic hexameter which is hardly wooden in Latin, although it can be repetitive at times. Not to worry -- he used a lot of spondaic substititions (altering a long, short short with a long, long) to vary the meter.
So, if you just want a taste, read books 1,2,4 and 6 and if you love it, by all means read the whole epic.
