Would make a really good movie
By Paul Lappen
This is the fifth story about Victoria Custer, who, using the pen name Vic Challenger, is an adventure and travel writer for her hometown newspaper. She happens to have the avatar of a 100,000-year-old cavewoman, named Nat-ul, living inside of her, which gives her the self-confidence to do things that even experienced male adventurers won't do.

Vic, and her friend, Lin Li, travel to the Australian Outback to visit Vic's relatives. During a party with some of the locals to celebrate their arrival, the group is robbed at gunpoint by unknown individuals (The word "treasure" has been used). Vic and Lin Li go after them, after appropriate preparations. A person can't just chase someone who is on horseback in the Outback without carrying food and water, at minimum.

They are not totally sure if they are following the bad guys, or a decoy. Eventually, they catch up to them at an abandoned cattle station. Vic and Lin Li can't just burst in with guns blazing; two of them against several bad guys are not good odds. Before that, they have to deal with some Tasmanian wolves called thylacines that are kept at the station. They are large and carnivorous, and have been beaten and starved into becoming killers.

As the chase continues, dehydration is a major concern for Vic and Lin Li. They manage to find just enough water and edible plants and animals to keep going. The chase leads to a small forest, at night, where unseen, but very carnivorous, creatures mow down the rest of the thylacines like they were nothing like they were nothing, and nearly do the same to Vic and Lin Li.

The "treasure" is found in a grotto, next to a pond that is guarded by a creature that sets new records for carnivorousness. Again, our heroes barely escape, this time with the leather chest. Finally, Vic runs into the leader of the bad guys. Who wins the draw? Is this the end of Vic/Nat-ul's quest to find Nu, her lover from all those centuries ago?

By the time a fiction series reaches Part 5, there is bound to be some lessening, however small, in the quality of the writing. That is not the case here. The writing is still really good, with plenty of action. Any of these novels would make a really good movie.

An Exciting Adventure!
By Believer
"Fast" the fifth installment in the "Vic Challenger" series begins after Victoria Custer (pen name Vic Challenger) a travel writer and her friend Lin Li return to the normalcy of life in Beatrice only to be whisked away to Australia to visit Vic's Aunt Ethel Hudgeons and her Uncle Pete. But life is never simple for the re-incarnated cave girl especially when her aunt, uncle and their guests at a party at their bush station are robbed; personal valuables stolen as well as a piece of an old treasure map. In a fast-paced, action-packed adventure Vic and Lin track the thieves into the wilds suffering the heat, thirst and learning to live on bush tucker until they confront the culprits in a mysterious grotto where a vicious legendary beast guards the family's treasure.

At the heart of the story is Na-tul a mighty huntress and warrior who died in an earthquake 100,00 years before and was reincarnated as Victoria Custer an adventurous journalist who continues to look for her lost love Nu. Following up on clues that have her searching for the artist Stu James, Vic and Lin take a side trip to Australia to visit her Aunt Ethel.

Intensity and suspense begins to escalate when Vic and Lin hunting for Geoffrey Bucknal and his gang of desperados struggle to survive not only in a hostile environment but in a fight for their lives against thylacines (Tasmanian wolves), the Ur (bloodthirsty beasts), and the bad guys. In this captivating page-turner, Jerry Gill touches on themes like survival, intolerance, justice and the defining choices of an individual.

The characters are colourful, complex and unforgettable; like Vic Challenger who's tactful, independent, adventurous and guarded. Skilled with an ax, she's a proficient warrior and tracker like her trusted and loyal friend Lin Li. These two personalities as well as a cast of others including the greedy, cold, heartless Geoffrey Bucknal and his gang of merciless killers fuel the story with excitement, energy and drama.

Short but thoroughly enjoyable "Vic: Fast" is a roller-coaster thrill ride that doesn't let go until the end. I look forward to reading Vic's next adventure.

Good Reading
By LAS Reviewer
Vic is still on the hunt for her lost love. They were both killed in a natural disaster during the days of cavemen, but she’s become reincarnated and believes he may have, too. She’s got her eye on one adventurer but she hasn’t located him yet. In the meantime, she’s improving her survival skills and training for battle. She’s also going to go visit her relatives in Australia.

This series has the flavor of the dime detective novels. They were exciting, fun to read and the characters did outrageous things. So do Vic and her friend, Lin.

The story is full of monsters, both human and animal. Some are real animals, some are fantasy. When the reception they are having in Vic and Lin’s honor is interrupted by bandits and they steal everything of value, including a map, Vic has a new quest. She’s going to go find them and recover the goods. They don’t even get away from the house without having a battle to the death.

They almost die from lack of water in the outback. The bandits sic Tasmania Devils on them. They get attacked by lizards. It’s a good thing they practice all the time or they wouldn’t be alive. Vic almost turns into a Tasmanian Devil herself when she is facing terrible odds. She can also do more with an ax than most humans could.

Hang onto your chair when you start this book. It’s a wild ride from beginning to end and you’ll find yourself turning pages faster and faster. Mr. Gill grabs your attention and then commences in his story telling. This would be fun to read around a campfire as long as you aren’t afraid of the dark. You might start hearing things…

Lost Prince, by Gregory Gourlay

Garrick Connolly, young American war veteran, struggling with his experiences from Afghanistan, learns of the "legend of the cave," the final resting place of the Lost Prince, during a visit to Peru. For centuries, sealed up inside a cliff face in one of the deepest canyons on earth, the mummified remains of Yahuar Huaccac, priest of the Incas, young man of noble birth, has stood lonely vigil over the gleaming antiquities from an Incan temple. Through the towering Andes Mountains, Garrick follows the clues left behind by Yahuar Huaccac and unlocks the ancient mystery. Author's note: "There is an actual 'legend of the cave' in an Andean valley I am very familiar with. A cave in a soaring cliff face is sealed up with a black stone. I don't know what is inside."

“Indiana Jones” level of suspense, mystery and adventure! Excellent!
By Dizzydog
This is the second book by Gregory Gourlay that I have read and it equals the African epic masterpiece, Kindred Passage.

Lost Prince opens with a page-turning, intense combat scene set in Afghanistan. In the midst of the action, we meet Garrick Connolly. Conolly’s war experiences are key in the development of his character.

Supporting characters and plot points are masterfully introduced – including the gritty Slade with a “machine gunner’s eyes,” as well as “leading lady” Roxana Carpio – a California transplant with an intriguing back story. As those who have traveled abroad know, an instant friendship can occur when living in a foreign country simply based on the commonality of one’s native language or citizenship. A series of truly believable “chance meetings” act as a springboard for life changing adventure.

Just as the author did with Kindred Passage, Lost Prince transports the reader to another part of the world using vivid details. This time it is South America. The descriptions of the settings, cultures and the authentic dialogue (including “mangled Spanish”) simply would not be possible without an incredible amount of historical research combined with first hand experience of the region. Another similarity is how brilliantly different time periods are portrayed. The sub-plot featuring an impeccable described journey into the lost civilization of the Incas makes Lost Prince a double achievement in storytelling. Reminiscent of Jean M. Auel’s “Clan of the Cave Bear,” this primitive civilization is brought to life in painstaking detail.

Past, present, legend and modern reality are interwoven to create a story with an “Indiana Jones” level of suspense, mystery and adventure. This is an adventure reader’s ticket to experience an Andes adventure complete with Incan history, lost treasure and an ageless theme. Another masterpiece that is brilliantly done. Bravo!

Lost Prince by Gregory Gourlay The Lost Prince is a ...
By Jocko Lee
Lost Prince by Gregory Gourlay
The Lost Prince is a fitful account of the first encounter of the Inca’s and the Spanish explorers, and the death and destruction brought in the name of religion. The story of Ollanta, the big warrior that had to be killed twice and of his half-brother, Yahuar Huaccac, who would become the guardian of sacred temple treasures. It also tell of sometime vast caches of gold and silver hidden by the Inca’s to keep them safe from the Spanish, and the extent some people will go to on the way to find that hoard.
Two Americans, both running from their problems in one war, wonder into another one between themselves. They both find gold and silver but one finds something he can treasure a different way.

Only someone with much research or by putting boots on the ground, or both, could come up with all the local details covered in this story.

The great Peruvian adventure
By Amazon Customer
It has been so long since I read a good adventure story that Lost Prince brought up my nostalgia for stories like Tintin and Indiana Jones movies. This book is impeccably written with vivid descriptions of Peruvian natural escapes which easily transports the reader to a different place and time. The characters are well thought-of and planned and the exchanges between them flow naturally and realistically. It is an excellent read which combines elements of adventure, mystery, thrill and romance.

I believe that this story is result of the author's travels and extensive research into the past history of Peru. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to go on a South American adventure right from their living rooms!

But George isn't quite ready to throw in the towel yet. He still has one burning desire left--to drive across America in his old van. So, after telling himself "no" for far too long, he finally loads a mattress in the back the van and hits the road.

When George first sets out his expectations of what he'll find are low. He hasn't liked the changes he believes America and its people have undergone over the years. But not long after leaving home he meets some very interesting people in campgrounds and begins to reevaluate his negative beliefs. He also finds himself agreeing to take an unlikely traveling companion along with him on his journey. And that works out well, too. But then something even more unexpected happens--something George never in his wildest dreams believed was possible--something that would not only change the course of his trip but the course of his life as well.

Aa can't put it down romance by one of the best
By G. Polley
When it comes to writing about finding the bright side of things when life seems to fall apart, Tom Winton has few equals. When George McLast's wife dies of heart failure, he is devastated. What is he going to do? Then, against the strong objections of his son, he refurbishes his '99 Ford Econoline van and takes off on the trip of a lifetime. And there his new life begins, crammed with discoveries and problems and romance. This is a vintage Tom Winton tale, a book that returns in memory.

A Boomer’s Heady Roadtrip
By Tsunami Connecton Reviewer Author
Truly inspired by the lure of the winding road to self-discovery, like so many of America’s greatest writers, Tom Hinton follows a proud tradition, as Steinbeck said, “to join every American’s hunger to move.”
Mr. Winton’s book meanders with the pulse of a man coming unbound from the loss of his soul mate of forty years. He thrusts himself out of a years-long funk and climbs into a turquoise-blue van with home-done carpentry cabinets, a window-fit air conditioner and a heart of gold. From the opening images of a sunrise seen through a heart-shaped cloud to the visiting rights at a young boy’s first glimpse of mortality, the reader experiences a heart-warming, coming-of-age for a lonely boomer.
No spoilers here, but the tale begins when he picks up a stray dog—man after my own heart. Pick it up and while away a few pleasant hours. Highly recommended!

Highly recommend this book
By KJB46
I've read the other review on this book, and I have to say that I disagree completely. The book is not racist or derogatory to women at all. She just didn't get the premise of the book.
The story is about two men who go out hunting in Idaho, and shoot what they think is a bear. One of the men goes back to the truck for some items and when he returns, his partner is gone. He then realizes that what they shot was not a bear, but rather a Sasquatch.

The story of what happens to the man who is abducted by the sasquatch is a wonderful story in itself. Now add to it the story of what his hunting partner goes thru trying to get him rescued, and the real trouble that starts when the neo-nazi movement in N. Idaho gets involved, and you have another great story, within a great story. I think the author's treatment of the neo-nazi movement in N. Idaho that precipitated the Ruby Ridge fiasco is enlightened and informative.

I've read this book twice and each time was left with the desire to read more on the wonderful relationship the hunter creates with the sasquatch family. Where is part 2????

I did not like this book. I felt there were parts that were racist and also derogatory to women. It was fiction and the writing was easy to read but I could not finish it. It was too hard for me to get past some of the things that happened to the characters. I would not reccomend this book

Highly recommend this book

Read the other review on this book and I have to say that I disagree completely. The book is not racist or derogatory to women at all. She just didn't get the premise of the book.
The story is about two men who go out hunting in Idaho, and shoot what they think is a bear. One of the men go back to the truck for some items and when he returns, his partner is gone.

From the Inside Flap
Excerpt:
A shadow moved where the void was, blotting out the stairway as it slithered up towards the monolith's top. Silent and smooth, the humanoid shadow approached with a sliver of metal, like the fang of a star god floating before it.

Vanguard hesitated, caught up in the great looming form as it descended from the sky. The great metal hulk gobbled up the light with sponged absence. Hesitation expired, and he moved in quick to do his job.

Nathan reacted to years of paranoia as he heard the brush of a shoe on the platform behind him. Removed from his enamored view, he ducked and spun narrowly missed by the would-be assassins blade. Pinning empty air, the blade turned in its trajectory as Vanguard's body reacted and moved in towards Nathan's face.

Not a man of finesse, Nathan treated the small dark man with respectful distance.

Adopting a squat tense posture, Nathan screamed at him. "What the hell!"

"Hell indeed." Vanguard cut him off. "That's where you will be heading soon. Stop twitching so much so I can finish the job."

"What job?" Nathan tried to stall him as potential reactions zipped through his mind.

Nathan feigned a punch that was met with the slick edge of the blade; cutting his knuckles to shreds. He withdrew and cradled his hand, backing off slightly.

"You've pissed off the wrong crowd Archaeologist. Now just hold still so we can." Hardly out of breath, Vanguard swung again, testing his opponent's skill. Vanguard's distractions seemed to be working. Nathan was shuffling backwards, trying to move away, but one foot met empty air, and he spun on instinct to regain balance. Then Vanguard made his final move.

Complex plotting, colorful characters, minor grievance with the editing
By Michael C Ehr
Donaldson's sci-fi/horror epic is well-paced, interspersing nuanced character interaction with fast-paced action and occassionally dense narration. Characters come and go throughout the two-part novel, continuing to add to the expanding tapestry of his futuristic universe. There are plenty of good bits to like within Infinty Children. Lovecraftian undertones support the mystery of the intersection of alien races with humanity in the present and in the past.

As for the review deconstructing the first two sentences, I say that's hyper-critical. At times, Infinity Children reads like stream-of consciousness, a window into Donaldson's fertile (and frequently dark) mind. As it should be! My only small complaint is that instances of clumsy structure should have been edited prior to print, and for that I blame the publisher. This book is lucid, if often abstract, but such is the speculative fiction genre.

The Invisible Enemy: Black Fox (Volume 1), by Anthony R Howard

It starts when reporter Dorian Valentine discovers a horrific secret regarding the Strategic Offensive Reduction Treaty (a critical peace agreement between the former Soviet Union and the United States): One side is cheating, and even worse - the cheating side holds the ultimate trump card. Brutally trained from birth to live, talk, and think like Americans, Russia has constructed the most dangerous network of secret operatives ever known - created for the ultimate trinity: Intelligence, Espionage, and Warfare. This dynamic organization has been planted on U.S. soil long ago by the former KGB to retrieve information at any cost, cause political catastrophe, or kill on moment’s notice. Now they are out of control, striking fear into the heart of the Pentagon. The Central Intelligence Agency assembles a powerful team of agents that “do not exist” in an attempt to terminate an enemy that cannot be caught by any traditional methods. The Invisible Enemy grabs the reader by the arm, and casts them deep into the furious depths of intense warfare, awesome espionage, and unpredictable deceit - where there is a frightful undercover agenda that even the operatives themselves are not aware of. The reader is paralyzed with anticipation as the plot somersaults out of control after the enemy operatives swiftly perform a devastating political strike, and then realize they have been set up. Here the game changes and no one has told them the rules. Betrayed by their own country and thrown into a world they can not trust, they are forced to depend on the most potent weapon they had ever been trained to use: their unnatural minds. In a fast paced novel that spins from one explosive scene to the next, the most high-tech weaponry is used including speed of light weapons, “smart chips”, artificial intelligence, and never before exposed government technology and organizations, thus introducing a new, exciting, untapped level of spycraft where nothing iswhat it seems.

Great page turner!
By NatashiaLAnderson
The Invisible Enemy was a very good book. I normally don't read spy novels but after I read the summary, I thought I would give a try. I wasn't disappointed. The characters were well developed and the storyline kept you intrigued. Lots of action and advanced technology that was described in great detail. It made me wonder if these things really exist in the world. I am definitely telling my friends about this book and am getting the next one. No question about it!

Great Summer Read!!
By K. Gaska
Invisible Enemey is a great summer read. It engages the audience, is unpredictable, and leaves you wanting more. The author brings us into a world of secret spies, assassins, and unimagineable technology and action. As the book opens, we are thrust into the middle of one of the organization's top secret missions. As the plot unfolds the reader learns more about the signififcance of the opening scene and the innerworkings of this elite espionage team. The author also allows the story to unfold from multiple viewpoints so we see the point of view from members of the FBI, CIA, Russian operatives, and a top secret US stealth team. This is something I really enjoyed because it leaves the reader wanting more, peicing the puzzle together slowly from multiple angles. Overall this is a great read, definitely a page-turner to bring with you to the beach, on the plane, train, etc. Even if you don't love spy novels (which I don't), the plot will keep you intrigued and you'll find yourself hooked.

  • Robinson Crusoe /ˌrɒbɪnsən ˈkruːsoʊ/ is a novel by Daniel Defoe, first published on 25 April 1719. The first edition credited the work's protagonist Robinson Crusoe as its author, leading many readers to believe he was a real person and the book a travelogue of true incidents.[2] It was published under the full title The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, Of York, Mariner: Who lived Eight and Twenty Years, all alone in an un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having been cast on Shore by Shipwreck, wherein all the Men perished but himself. With An Account how he was at last as strangely deliver'd by Pyrates.

Grade 3-6-As with any abridged version, the story is spare, but what it loses in prose, it gains in readability. The easy-to-understand text keeps some of the flavor of the original, but in condensing 27 chapters and more than 300 pages of narrative to 50-plus pages with half as many chapters, much of the long-winded description has been eliminated. However, the modernized spelling, added dialogue, shortened expository passages, large type, and emphasis on fast-paced storytelling will make this classic accessible to a younger audience. The story ends abruptly with Robinson Crusoe's return to England. None of the adventures after his arrival in his homeland-the discovery of riches at his Brazilian plantation, Friday's encounter with the bear, or the attack by ravenous wolves on the trek to France-are included. Nevertheless, the bare-bones telling, combined with more than a dozen of Wyeth's lavish oil paintings (which originally graced the 1920 edition), makes this a worthwhile purchase.

    From Booklist
One of the first novels ever written, Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe (1719), the classic adventure story of a man marooned on an island for nearly 30 years, is part of our culture. From Scott O'Dell's Island of the Blue Dolphins (1960) to the recent movie Castaway, the elemental situation of the person suddenly alone, who must make a life in a dangerous environment, continues to enthrall all ages. Yet few adults, never mind young people, can wade through Defoe's lengthy tome with its convoluted eighteenth-century prose. So here's a shortened storybook version--retold by Timothy Meis in accessible style, yet true to the spirit of the original and the time when it was first published--in a large picture-book format with clear type, high-quality paper, and more than a dozen unforgettable narrative paintings by Wyeth, first published in 1920 and newly reproduced here in glowing color.

The story begins with the universal quest: the young man in Britain, torn between his safe home and his hunger for adventure, breaks away from his loving father and sails away into the unknown. After a series of harrowing escapes, he's shipwrecked on a desert island. His lively first-person account shows how his intelligence and education help him survive for many years, and how he uses technology, including guns and tools salvaged from the ship. He sets up home, reads the Bible, finds a parrot as a pet, and even devises a calendar to keep track of time. Then one day he finds a human footprint: "Was it someone who could save me and take me back to civilization? Or was it a savage who landed here?" When some "savages" arrive in several canoes, he uses his guns to get rid of them, and he rescues one of their captives, a handsome fellow with very dark skin. Delighted to have a companion at last, Crusoe names the newcomer Friday (since Crusoe found him on Friday). Crusoe teaches "my man Friday" to speak English, fire a gun, carve a canoe, and clothe his nakedness, and they live happily together. Later they rescue a white man and Friday's father from a group of "savages," and, eventually, they all return to their homes.

Defoe is said to have based his novel on the true adventures of Alexander Selkirk (who spent four or five years on an island in the South Pacific) and on accounts of other castaways of the time. The survival adventure is still enthralling. But what about the racism? This is clearly the classic colonialist story, but whose history is it? And how will young people read it today? Is it just boring, politically correct nitpicking to object to the use of the word "savages" throughout the book and even on the book flap? Yes, there are some bad guys among the whites, but even they are called "men"; the dark-skinned people are always known as "savages." How do we talk about this story today? The guns and tools make Crusoe boss, but wouldn't Friday have been able to teach the newcomer some survival skills? Does it never occur to Crusoe to learn Friday's own name and language? Who discovered whom? Wyeth's clear, action-packed illustrations are magnificent. But there's one shockingly jarring scene of Friday groveling in gratitude at Crusoe's feet. When the whites say thanks, they embrace each other.

So, no, the objections are not just P. C. sermonizing. The racism is highly offensive. But the fact that the story is so widely known and has such elemental appeal makes this an excellent book for discussion, especially in classes studying the history of exploration and discovery. Louise Erdrich addressed a similar problem [BKL Ap 1 99] when she commented that although she had loved the Little House books as a child, in rereading them as an adult, she was shocked to recognize that "not only was there no consciousness about the displaced people whose land the newcomers were taking, but also that there was a fair amount of racism." Still, she disagrees with censorship of any kind: "The best way is for good teachers and parents to install racism radar detectors so that kids can make their own judgments, because they're going to have to."

Robinson Crusoe is part of the fine Scribner Storybook Classic series that includes The Last of the Mohicans and Robin Hood, all of which bring readers to Wyeth's paintings. Treasure Island will be out later this year. Hazel Rochman

    Review
(in full The Life and Strange Surprizing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, of York, Mariner: Who Lived Eight and Twenty Years, All Alone in an Un-inhabited Island on the Coast of America, Near the Mouth of the Great River of Oroonoque; Having Been Cast on Shore by Shipwreck, Wherein All the Men Perished but Himself. With an Account how he was at last as Strangely Deliver'd by Pyrates. Written by Himself.) Novel by Daniel Defoe, published in 1719. The book is a unique fictional blending of the traditions of Puritan spiritual autobiography with an insistent scrutiny of the nature of men and women as social creatures, and it reveals an extraordinary ability to invent a sustaining modern myth. The title character leaves his comfortable middle-class home in England to go to sea. Surviving shipwreck, he lives on an island for 28 years, alone for most of the time until he saves the life of a savage, whom he names Friday. The two men eventually leave the island for England. Defoe probably based part of Crusoe's tale on the real-life experiences of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish sailor who at his own request was put ashore on an uninhabited island in 1704 after a quarrel with his captain. He stayed there until 1709. The book was an immediate success in England and on the European continent, and Defoe wrote a sequel (The Farther Adventures of Robinson Crusoe) that was also published in 1719. Many stage and film adaptations have been made of Robinson Crusoe's life, and the book has spawned many imitations, including Johann Wyss's Swiss Family Robinson. --< /">The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

WARNING: This is NOT the original text
    By Joshua Q
Defoe helped to define the modern fictional novel when he wrote about the tales of Robinson Crusoe. The book has a strong religious theme, as was Defoe's intention. However, this version of the text censors out some of the language against what Defoe called the Papist Church (or the Roman Catholic Church) as well as some items which would be considered racially insensitive today (but leaving in much of it as well). I don't understand why this version leaves out some of those parts, as they completely change the story that Defoe intended. I'm not sure that Amazon knows these texts are censored (not the original) as there is no allusion to it in the book's description.

Superior and inspirational reading for adults and teens
    By B.C. Scribe
After reading Glyn Williams' trenchant 'The Prize Of All The Oceans' I had an overwhelming desire to read this classic once again. I first read it when I was a mere 10 year old and it completely mesmerized me; I find that it still held the same power over me thirty years later. It is difficult to put this tale down once the title character becomes a castaway on the "island of despair" (as Crusoe refers to it) and he begins the battle against the odds to survive. Facing extreme tropical heat, torrential storms, a dreadful loneliness and the struggle to master some of the simplest of skills we take for granted Crusoe wages his one-man crusade for survival. Beginning his desolate existence steeped in woeful self-pity he slowly realizes through a series of trying circumstances, devotional reading of the Bible and finally relief from his isolated state that the experience proves to be one of reverie. In the process Crusoe becomes quite possibly the most inspirational figure to spring forth from the pages of literature.
Though it is annually listed by literature scholars as one of the 100 finest works of fiction, today primarily adolescents read Defoe's enduring tale as part of their required reading for school; very few others rarely bother with this nearly three century old tale. 'Robinson Crusoe' it seems is a classic awaiting a renaissance of rediscovery by adults who regularly read for either leisure or as a part of continuing education. While the novel's approach to morality may seem a bit old fashioned by today's contemporary standards, the character's awakening to wisdom, inner strength and faith will inspire any reader of any age. Crusoe's ability to steel himself against the onslaught of natural elements, his own self doubts and finally a band of savages who discover his "island empire" should win over even the most jaded of us. This Norton Critical Edition is the perfect package to gain a deep appreciation for this masterpiece of the English language. So do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of this book today and transport yourself back to your youth and also to a time long past. It's a journey you won't regret taking.

An adventure, but different than you might expect
    By frumiousb
The author of Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe, is generally credited with being one of the first novel writers in the English language. The book is surely an influential one-- spawning countless imitations, derivations, and (in our era) reality-based television shows.

It is billed, quite fairly, as an adventure story. However, it is a very different kind of adventure than the modern action-sequence laden book which readers today may expect. It is an adventure story, but one which centers primarily on mastery and morality.

The morality is placed centrally in the book when Crusoe rejects the advice of his father to accept the happiness of the middle class life to which he was born. Against the wishes of his family, he runs off to sea to find adventure. It is not until Crusoe literally recreates a primitive approximation of that middle class life for himself on his island that he is freed.

Crusoe is also a story about the ability of mankind to master his surroundings through hard work, patience, and Christianity. The combination of these three supports are what allow him to escape captivity in Africa, overcome the deadly obstacles on the island, and finally leave the island itself. His physical prowess and combat skills are significantly less important to his journey than the message of trust and persistance that the decades he spends on the island convey. While this message might need tempering for the modern reader, it is also inspirational and important to read.

If the potential reader is not used to the diction of the time, the book itself may take some patience and persistance. It pays off, in the end, and should be an excellent book for the young teenager (or the not-so-young grown-up) interested in stories of adventure. The child who reads and enjoys My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George would probably be a good potential audience for Robinson Crusoe. For a good life-at-sea duo, you might consider pairing it with Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana.

FOURTEEN DAYS IN THE YUKON With hellacious marriages over, sisters Betty and Anne plan a trip to Alaska. Just what they need to fill their lives with a little excitement. The story takes place in the summer of 1968. In a used van, camping their way from Mississippi into Canada, things begin to go awry with the vehicle the second day on the road. Limping from one garage to another a mechanic in Jasper, Canada assures them he has it ‘purring like a kitten’. However, miles from nowhere the van decides to give up the ghost completely. A mountain man named ‘Doc’ appears from the forest on a hand made contraption he calls a ‘three wheeler’. He offers them the use of his hunting shack in the woods until he can get some needed parts and someone out to fix the van. The quaint little shack is more smack dab in the woods than the ditch where the van landed. Lulled into a tranquil sense of security in the roughly hewn shack, they never think once about man nor beast, deciding to relax in a place one usually only find in dreams. These daydreams are ripped away with the ferocity of a tornado in the flatlands of MS when scumbag Clyde attacks Betty. Terrified beyond anything they've ever experienced...the act, the buried perpetrator under an old tree, jail in a foreign land, and the fact they may never see their kids again, they take the only way out available. Follow the river. Easy for a time, thinking around every bend of the water, that is getting deeper and more turbulent, the nightmare is somewhat replaced with bruises, hunger and a fatigue they've never known. Mile after mile with no food left from the rations they took from the shack, they’re fully aware of the fact that they may never see their families again. One disaster follows another; food poisoning from unknown berries, a sprained ankle, the worst a light earthquake that erases all thoughts of 4-legged beasts from their mind!

    Better than the adult novel
    By J. Johnston
Last winter I took my 8-year-old daughter to see The Force Awakens in theaters. Both of us decided to read the respective novelizations of The Force Awakens -- she read this novel, I read the "adult" one by Alan Dean Foster.

    This one is much better.

Foster's book is a dull, poorly written mire. The pacing is terrible, with some of the best action scenes victims to lifeless, roundabout writing. I've read some of Foster's other books and they are much better, so I don't know what happened there.

After I read that book I took a look at this one, and I was astonished at the difference. The junior novel is lucidly written, well-paced, and the action scenes -- dare I say it? --- feel like real action scenes. There are even some extra moments that weren't in the film that flesh out the story a little. I don't recall seeing any of those with the adult version.

One caveat: the book is listed as being for grades 3-7, and while my 2nd grade daughter enjoyed it, it definitely challenged her, so bear that in mind as you decide whether or not to get this for your child.

No spoilers in my review, great book
    By C's Mom
Almost word for word matches the movie. However, this book also translates what BB8 is saying, and what other characters are thinking, whereas in the movie, you have to decipher all those thoughts in just long stares. A little more insight into Finn than you might get from the movie. If you can't get to the movie, this can get you caught up on the twists and surprises.

    Wow! Love this book
    By Marschal A. Fazio
Okay, while I haven't read the whole book yet because I didn't want to spoil anything before I saw the movie. The prologue and the first chapter are amazing. Michael's prologue encapsulates the history of the Star Wars Saga and the back story to the Force Awakens in a way only a true star wars fan could. It brings feelings of nostalgia and hope for the pages to come. (Okay, I have read a little ahead, I can't stop myself). This is definitely a page turner. Great Job!
